Last call for the Mad T Party
This Sunday, November 30 is the final day to experience the Mad T Party at Disney California Adventure, Disney announced last week. The nighttime dance party debuted in 2012 as a replacement for ElecTRONica, and featured two stages and several large set pieces.

Disney has not officially announced what is next for the Hollywood Pictures Backlot area, but Muppet*Vision 3D is currently closed through December 19 for what is rumored to be installation of a new Frozen-themed entertainment offering. An announcement is likely before the holiday media event on December 6.
Fantasmic Fastpass: First Test
Disneyland used last week's Annual Passholder Anniversary party as a test of the new Fantasmic Fastpass system, and we shared notes from my experience on our MousePad discussion forum the following morning. It is safe to assume everything will change before this rolls out to the public in 3 weeks, but here's what we saw:
There were three viewing areas last night, Red (which we were told was the “best” area), Gold (on the east / Frontierland side of center) and Blue (on the west / Haunted Mansion side of center).
I used Google Maps to create a rough map of the seating areas. As far as I could tell, the colors corresponded to which of the three water screens you could see, but had no bearing on how close to the water you were.
The good news is that the standard “sitting” areas were all still sitting during last night's show. I was a little worried when we got there and saw a LOT of people standing against the front rail, but as I walked around during the show I saw they were indeed sitting.

The note in the AP event flyer said 5000 tickets were available last night. To ensure there were people in all 3 sections, cast members told me that distribution was not first-come, first-served, but a random assignment of one of the three areas. We got red tickets. I heard that they did not run out of tickets before distribution ended, but I do not know that for sure. I'd love to hear from someone who knows for certain one way or the other.
The tickets said to return between 9:30 and 10:15 for the 10:30 show. Since the only performance of the parade was scheduled for 9:30, we decided to watch the parade from Main Street, and then head to Fantasmic.
The tickets did not have a return location printed on them. We were told by the cast member who gave us the tickets to line up by Pirates of the Caribbean. By the time we got to the show, there was no line, and cast members were giving completely different and conflicting instructions about where the red section ticket holders were supposed to enter the viewing area.
When we finally got into the correct viewing section, the only area open was the upper terrace in front of Cafe Orleans. We initially had a great view of a tree, but moved to one side of the area to get a better sight line on the center water screen.
Once my group got situated in our assigned area, I left them to go see what was going on in the other areas. The cast member managing our section gave me a Fastpass ticket when I left the area so I could get back in. Someone who was just entering was upset that she had to surrender her ticket, because she wanted to save it as a souvenir. The cast member told her that they had to collect them, and could not give them back after the show, because managers would be counting the tickets so they'd know how many people had been in each area.
I walked down to the old keel boat dock, which was standby viewing last night, and there was absolutely NO crowd. There were about 20 people on the keel boat dock itself, which is now a smoking area. If you were willing to put up with chain-smoking neighbors, you could get a great view of the show from there. I admit, it annoys me that this is a smoking area during the show, and I hope that changes once Fantasmic Fastpass rolls out.
I kept walking towards the edge of the blue standing area, and got a perfect spot between the raft dock and the keel boat dock, right on the water. When people saw me standing there and realized the cast member wasn't telling me to move, about a dozen ducked under the rope marking the edge of the blue section and came to stand around me.
Before the show started, cast members said the bridge over Pirates was being held for overflow Fastpass (in case a section ran out of room before it ran out of tickets), *or* standby – they didn't know which yet, and weren't letting people stand there. I asked after the show, and it turned out they used it for standby viewing.
So, that's what we saw. Here's what we don't know:
- How many viewing sections there will really be once this rolls out. As I detailed in the Fantasmic Fastpass Guide when this news first broke, there are at least 6 different ways to see the show now. Last night's 3 viewing areas will certainly be broken into smaller chunks to accommodate the various dinner packages.
- How to guarantee a spot in the “sitting” area, other than by purchasing the Blue Bayou package.
- The difference in viewing areas for River Belle vs. Aladdin's Oasis vs. Hungry Bear dining packages. Disney has said the Hungry Bear dessert package comes with a separate viewing area. I suspect it will be on or near the keel boat dock, in the area that was all standby last night.

The new system officially begins December 12, but it's highly likely that Disneyland will conduct additional tests with the Fastpass seating before then. Holidays at Disneyland and Downtown Disney

Something's baking at the Grand Californian Hotel
500 pounds of gingerbread, 200 pounds of sugar, and over 60 gallons of frosting and icing went into making the “grand” gingerbread house now on display in the lobby of Disney's Grand Californian Hotel. The team responsible for the Haunted Mansion Holiday gingerbread house created the 7.5 foot tall, 12 foot wide model, crafted in the same Arts and Crafts style as the hotel. An information card near the display says the wooden infrastructure took over 1200 hours to build, and the edible portions of the house took over 1400 to bake or prepare.

Jingle Cruise is back
When the Jungle Cruise holiday overlay debuted at Disneyland in 2013, I wrote that the decorations were much more subtle than I expected, but noted, “ironically, some have complained that Disney didn't go far enough in creating this overlay, though it's hard to see how much more designers could have pushed the theme without putting Santa hats on the sleeping zebra, or hanging stockings from the “mother in law's” trunk.”

Those who wanted more Jingle in their Cruise are certain to adore the 2014 edition. Signs at the entrance of the attraction explain that the skippers' “holiday shipment” has gone missing, and ask passengers to keep their eyes out for the missing cargo. You won't be on the cruise for more than a moment before you spot the first of the missing cargo. The crates appear to have burst on impact, dripping huge swags of metallic garland from the trees on both sides of the boat. The further you get into the ride, the more over-the-top the decorations become. And while you won't see a Santa hat on the sleeping zebra, that's only because the unlucky fellow has been replaced by a plastic reindeer from a gaudy Santa's Sleigh lawn set.
Likewise, the skipper's spiel was revised to fully embrace the campy wonder of the overlay, and most seem to be making the most of the opportunity to work with the new material. Make this an early stop in your day, to avoid the 45+ minute lines which form by midday.
Jingle Jangle Jamboree
The holidays have returned to Big Thunder Ranch, in the form of the Jingle Jangle Jamboree. As in past years, this is a good place for families to take a break from the park and let kids run around a bit. Mickey and friends are on hand for informal meet-and-greet opportunities, but the star of the show is Santa. PhotoPass photographers are available to take portraits of the meeting, and will also use your personal camera if you wish.

Several times a day, the Frontierland players present The Plight Before Christmas, a holiday melodrama that includes audience sing along moments. Other activities in the area include Reindeer Games (free, carnival-style games); cookie decorating; and a craft area where visitors can decorate paper ornaments, or create holiday cards to send to troops overseas. Jingle Jangle Jamboree is open daily from 10:30a.m. to 5:30p.m.

Downtown Disney Winter Village
Olaf and the Frozen Ice Rink are back for 2014, along with an expanded Winter Village in the space between ESPN Zone and the Earl of Sandwich. The booths in the Village open around Noon for your shopping convenience, with ice skating from 3:00 to 10:30 or 11:00p.m. each night.

The 90-minute skating sessions are $17 for adults, $15 for children 9 and under. Members of the military, with proper ID, skate for $10. There are four sessions each night. On Friday and Saturday nights, the 3:00 p.m. session lasts 2 hours.

…The first candy canes of the 2014 season will be sold at Disneyland this Friday, November 28. Disneyland opens at 8 a.m., and wristbands will be distributed at park opening.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132) |
A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out November 27–29, 2014; December 24–31, 2014; and March 30 through April 4, 2015 . Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. 2014 Southern California CityPASS ($328/$284) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and a one-day admission to Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2014. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. 2014 Southern California CityPASS ($362/$309) – is the same as the CityPASS—a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and a one-day admission to Universal Studios Hollywood—with the addition of one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park. Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Disneyland Resort merchandise – Disneyland extended the 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders through December 31, 2014. 30% off rooms at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawaii – Disneyland Resort annual passholders can take 30% off select rooms at Aulani, now through December 19. You can choose between a standard hotel room, which offers traditional hotel amenities, or Disney Vacation Club villas with kitchens and in-room laundry. Standard rooms start around $300 per night after discount, with upgrades to better views and larger villas available. A 2-bedroom villa with an ocean view can run more than $1000 per night, but includes a full kitchen and sleeps up to 9 people. Discounts for US Military |
2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day.
