The Most Wonderful Week of the Year
When close friends and family ask me for the best time to visit Disneyland during the holidays, I always recommend the week after Thanksgiving. The majority of decorations are in place, the holiday parade and fireworks are on the schedule, and fresh candy canes are in the Candy Palace, but the peak holiday crowds are still a week or two away. This is also the only weekend to see the Candlelight Processional without a trip to Florida.
A much-needed storm may dampen a bit of the holiday cheer this week, but don't let some rain deter you from taking advantage of the lighter crowds to enjoy the most wonderful week of the year.
Finally Frozen?
Disneyland will hold their holiday media event this Friday, and we're hoping to finally have official confirmation of the rumors that have been spiraling in frozen fractals all around the Internet in recent weeks. One late-breaking bit of news was a comment made during the supposed final Mad T Party at Disney California Adventure. As we previously reported, the nighttime show closed last evening, November 30, supposedly to make room for some Frozen fun in DCA. Before he left the stage Sunday night, the Mad Hatter told the crowd, “We'll be back in May!”
Disney has not officially confirmed that the show will indeed return next Spring, but this adds another twist to the story.
A reader asked about the closure of Character Close-Up inside the Animation Building, and if this meant the Toy Story Zoetrope is gone. Cast members confirm that the display was indeed removed, and that the room is slated to be part of the rumored Frozen overlay in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot.
While that is complete speculation, this might be a good place to install an augmented reality photo backdrop, like the one currently in use at Walt Disney World. There, visitors take photos against the backdrop using their smartphone and the Using the Aurasma app, and Frozen characters “appear” in the photo.

It will also be interesting to see how Storybookland Canal Boats play into the Frozen fun. The ride—along with the adjacent Casey Jr. Circus Train—close today for refurbishment, and are scheduled to reopen on December 20, the same day the Muppet*Vision theater and Character Close-Up reopen.
Candlelight Tips
The Candlelight Processional takes place this Saturday and Sunday, December 6 and 7 at Disneyland. Started by Walt Disney in 1958 as a community appreciation event, the show features a Candlelight choir made up of cast members and community choir members, who perform music provided by the Disneyland orchestra. Guest narrators are invited to read the Christmas story in between songs.

After trying a few times to make this a larger public offering, with dining packages and reserved viewing, Disney has returned to the practice of treating Candlelight as a private event that just happens to take place in the middle of an operating theme park. Invited guests include community and civic leaders, as well as media and Club 33 members. Run as a private function, official details about the event are hard to come by. We hope this unofficial guide will help you navigate the park during these events, whether you wish to attend or merely access the attractions in other lands.
Event schedule
There are two performances on each day. The following is the schedule for Saturday and Sunday:
- 4:45 p.m. – Invited guest seating begins for the first performance.
- 5:20 p.m. – The processional begins when the choir walks from the gate near the Mad Hatter shop to their performance location at the Main Street Train Station.
- 5:30 p.m. – The first ceremony begins at Town Square.
- 7:15 p.m. – Invited guest seating begins for the second performance.
- 7:50 p.m. – The second processional begins.
- 8:00 p.m. – The second ceremony begins at Town Square.
Standby viewing
You have some options if you want to view the ceremony. Standby viewing is very limited, and on a first-come, first-served basis. Bench seating is available near the Christmas tree on the west side of Town Square; standing-room-only locations are located near City Hall, the Opera House, and any open spaces behind the seating area in Town Square. Viewing for the 5:30 p.m. performance opens at park opening (8 a.m. each day, with Extra Magic Hour and Magic Morning at 7 a.m. on Saturday), but viewing on the east side of Main Street does not become available until after the 3:30 p.m. “A Christmas Fantasy” parade passes that location.
All guests must leave the viewing area after the first performance has concluded. The line for the 8:00 p.m. performance then forms at the south end of Main Street, as soon as the 5:20 p.m. Processional has passed.
Guests with disabilities may sit in any of these viewing areas. A special assistance viewing area will also be provided on the east side of the viewing area, outside of the Opera House.
Operational effects
The performances on Saturday and Sunday affect numerous stores and attractions in the Town Square area. Based on last year's schedule, expect these attraction, food, and store closures to be in effect both days:
- Disneyland Railroad – 4:00 to 9:45 p.m.
- Main Street Vehicles – 12:30 p.m. to midnight
- Main Street Opera House – 3:00 to 10:00 p.m.
- Magic Eye Theater – 1:00 to 8:00 p.m.
- The Mad Hatter on Main Street – 4:00 to 9:00 p.m.
- The Disney Gallery – 4:45 to 9:00 p.m.
- Town Square popcorn and churro carts – all day
Traffic flow
Expect this event to be the first real test of Disneyland's new backstage passageway along the east side of Main Street, U.S.A. If you don't need to be on Main Street between 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., take advantage of lighter crowds throughout the rest of the park.
This and that…
…Disneyland is seeking Star Wars “costumers” to volunteer to cheer during the Star Wars Half Marathon weekend in January, 2015. Full details are in the Disney event website, but here is a quick summary:
- Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.
- In order to participate, individuals must register for the event and submit a photo of their costume.
- Participants must come dressed as Star Wars characters only.
- Costumes must be as true to the original costume as possible
- The time commitment is from approximately 04:30 am through 09:30 am. [Sunday, January 18, 2015]
- Those Costumers who meet the eligibility requirements and are registered for the 2015 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend may receive a Disneyland® Resort Theme Park ticket.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132) |
A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out November 27–29, 2014; December 24–31, 2014; and March 30 through April 4, 2015 . Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Disneyland Resort merchandise – Disneyland extended the 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders through December 31, 2014. 30% off rooms at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawaii – Disneyland Resort annual passholders can take 30% off select rooms at Aulani, now through December 19. You can choose between a standard hotel room, which offers traditional hotel amenities, or Disney Vacation Club villas with kitchens and in-room laundry. Standard rooms start around $300 per night after discount, with upgrades to better views and larger villas available. A 2-bedroom villa with an ocean view can run more than $1000 per night, but includes a full kitchen and sleeps up to 9 people.
