Soft Frozen | Christmas week toolkit | Rose Bowl teams to visit Disneyland | 2015 Refurbishment Update | This and that… | Crowd Forecast
Soft Frozen
Disney California Adventure began “soft opening” previews of the Frozen Fun event this weekend, with the reopening of Hollywood Land and availability of some of the Frozen additions. The two big attractions, Olaf's Snow Fest and the Frozen sing-along, are set to soft-open by New Year's Eve.
Anna and Elsa's Royal Welcome
The Frozen sisters have moved to Disney California Adventure, with a new meet-and-greet location inside the Animation Building. Fastpass tickets are required for this new offering, and are distributed outside the Animation Building via more of the portable Fastpass dispensers introduced over at Disneyland for Fantasmic.

The new meet-and-greet area is more private than the Disneyland location, with the sisters receiving visitors in a “ballroom” set constructed inside the Character Close-Up area. One definite advantage to the new location is that it doubled the capacity of the meet-and-greet, allowing twice as many Frozen fans to spend some quality time with the sisters from Arendelle. I'll leave it to the reader to work out how that happened.

The Animation Academy has also gone completely Frozen, with a new entrance sign featuring Olaf.

Olaf's Snow Fest
Located inside Stage 17, Olaf's Snow Fest will feature a snow play area, snow slide, and live entertainment. The area is not yet open, so the Olaf meet-and-greet is currently being hosted in a temporary location outside of Stage 17.

Fastpass tickets are also required for this offering, and were “sold out” much faster than those for Anna and Elsa on the first soft-opening day. If you're hoping to meet all of the Frozen characters, we recommend that you get your Fastpass for Olaf first, then head over to collect one for Anna and Elsa.

Wandering Oaken's Trading Post
Rizzo's Pawn Shop was renovated to create Wandering Oaken's Trading Post, and this overlay is actually quite nice compared to some of the other Frozen Fun decor. The small shop sells all variety of Frozen merchandise and souvenirs. The Hollywood Land face painters have also switched to an all-Frozen offering, with designs starting at $14.

Freeze the Night! A Family Dance Party
The Mad T Party closed less than three weeks ago, which left very little time for Disney to strike that set and construct a new infrastructure for the new Frozen dance party. In fact, it appears that Disney did little more than redecorate the Mad T Party props to set the stage for Freeze the Night.

Almost everything is the same, from the entrance archway to the stage, just with coats of paint or sheets of printed vinyl to change the theme. It looks very rough in the daylight, and even cast members working on the first soft-opening day said they hope things are touched up before the grand opening on Wednesday, January 7.

The dance party features three main entertainment areas:
- The main stage with a live DJ and periodic performances by a troupe of dancers known as the Ice Breakers
- Asecondary stage with an ice carving demonstration
- A play area for the younger fans, featuring an interactive dance floor.
Two bars serve Frozen-themed snacks as well as a variety of pricey themed beverages, in both kid-friendly and adult versions.

A surprise addition to Freeze the Night is a photo opportunity with Marshmallow, Elsa's icy guardian. Marshmallow is an impressive figure, operated by two human puppeteers. There is no Fastpass to meet Marshmallow, so be prepared to stand in a long line for your chance to snap a photo with the towering creature.

For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration
The first official performance of this new stage show, set in the renovated Muppet*Vision 3D theater, is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on New Year's Eve, though cast members say the show may begin previews as early as next week. The Disneyland website doesn't list all performances each day, but it appears the show is presented every 60 to 90 minutes starting an hour after park opening.
Christmas week toolkit
Long-time readers and regular Disneyland visitors can be excused for jumping to the next item in this week's Update, but the time has come for our annual reminder about handling the holidays at Disneyland Resort. The next two weeks are traditionally the busiest time of the year at the Disneyland Resort, and we want you to be prepared as you face maximum-capacity crowds.
Purchasing tickets
Most importantly, we strongly urge you to purchase your tickets before you ever approach the main entrance. There is absolutely no reason to wait until you reach the resort to buy your tickets, and buying before you arrive saves you a lot of time and headache, and leaves you with more options than those who show up without a ticket. On the busiest days, Disneyland implements a series of crowd-control measures, including restricting the sales of certain types of tickets, or even stopping selling tickets—so by purchasing tickets in advance, you can avoid standing in a long line just to buy tickets, as well as avoid being shut out from purchasing tickets altogether.
Tickets (and even annual passports) are available at many local grocery store chains, and be sure to check with your credit union or company benefit program. You can also purchase tickets at the Disneyland website and print them at home before you leave, saving you a long wait in the ticket booth lines.
If you still manage to get to Disneyland without a ticket, the resort has set up temporary ticket carts next to the Disneyland main entrance. These are full-service ticket desks, and can sell every type of ticket and passport. In addition, if you are staying at a Disneyland Resort hotel or Good Neighbor hotel, you can purchase tickets from the front desk before you head to the parks.
Take advantage of Extra Magic Hour and Magic Mornings if you can. Both programs offer an extra hour in the theme parks before they open to the general public, and are a great way to get the must-do rides out of the way before crowds arrive. Available at both parks everyday (excluding New Year's Day), now through Sunday, January 4:
- Extra Magic Hours – available to those who are staying at one of the three on-property resort hotels (Disney's Grand California Hotel, Disneyland Hotel, and the Paradise Pier Hotel). Gives you access to Disneyland one hour before scheduled park opening time. Valid theme park ticket and active hotel room key card are required for entry.
- Magic Mornings – included with advance-purchase 3-day+ tickets and the Southern California CityPass. Gives you access to Disneyland one hour before scheduled park opening time. Each person must have an eligible ticket to enter.
Shopping discounts
If you plan to do some shopping this week and you don't have an annual pass or cast member discount, purchase a snack before you make any major purchases. Many Disneyland Resort quick-serve restaurants receipts include a 20-percent-off merchandise discount coupon on the bottom. The coupons are only valid at participating stores, and usually only before noon, but check the expiration date—the coupons do not have to be used the same day you receive it.
Food
Plan your meals. Table service restaurants fill quickly, so you risk eating hot dogs from a vending cart or waiting in long lines at the counter service locations if you don't make reservations where possible. The new online dining reservation system introduced last year makes it easy to search for available tables without waiting on hold for hours with the Disneyland Dine Line.
If you're in the parks and need help finding an open restaurant, stop by City Hall (Disneyland) or the Chamber of Commerce (DCA) and look for the marked “dining reservations” phones to contact the Dine Line—we've found that calls made from Disney phones tend to be answered more promptly. If all else fails, call the Dine Line at (714) 781-3463 from your home or cell phone to see what they have available.
Rose Bowl teams to visit Disneyland
The two teams competing in the 2015 Rose Bowl college football game are scheduled to visit Disneyland on Saturday, December 27 to participate in the Disney Media Day. Expect the coaches and key players from the #3 ranked University of Oregon and #2 ranked Florida State University to appear in a very brief ceremony in front of Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle at 2:15 p.m.
We do not yet have a formal schedule for the ceremony, and the move from the normal weekday media day to a weekend event may prompt some changes to the normal schedule. Based on past years, expect the event to impact operations around Main Street, with the Castle forecourt roped off starting around 11:30 a.m. to set up a seating area, and the Main Street vehicles to close for the day at noon. The seating area is reserved for invited guests only, but you can watch from the sidelines if you're willing to wait an hour or more.
Immediately after the ceremony, the coaches and players generally participate in interview sessions. Again, we don't have an official schedule, but keep an eye out for some of the players posing for media photos around the resort starting around 3:00—the Matterhorn Bobsleds and Mad Tea Party are two likely spots to catch a glimpse of the players.
We also expect the marching bands from the two teams to appear at Disneyland after Christmas, but no details are yet available.
The Rose Bowl airs on New Year's Day on ESPN, and starts at 5:00 p.m.
2015 Refurbishment Update
Even more rides, shops, and restaurants were added to the refurbishment calendar this week. Expect everything west of the Haunted Mansion to be behind a work wall starting Monday, January 12, as all of Critter Country closes for refurbishment. Over at Disney California Adventure, work begins on Monday, January 26 to complete the retheming of the shops of the Boardwalk, as Boardwalk Bazaar, Sideshow Shirts, and Point Magu Tattoo shutter.
Drought-conscious Disney fans will be pleased to know that Disney is again partnering with the Orange County Water District to treat and store nearly 16 million gallons of water from Paradise Bay during the upcoming World of Color refurbishment, rather than releasing the water into storm drains. Disney used the same method to conserve water during the initial construction of the World of Color infrastructure, and also during the refurbishment of Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of May 2014.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132) |
A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out December 24–31, 2014; and March 30 through April 4, 2015 . Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |

Discounts for everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
