More Frozen Fun for California Adventure | New Year's week toolkit | 2015 Refurbishment Update | This and that… | Crowd Forecast
More Frozen Fun for California Adventure
Disney California Adventure continued “soft opening” previews of the Frozen Fun event last week, with Olaf's Snow Fest and For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration opening ahead of their official Wednesday, January 7 debut. More set decoration was also added to Hollywood Land, which has become quite the destination for Frozen fans. I spent Sunday morning checking out the new additions with a Frozen-obsessed 4-year-old, and he loved every inch of the place.
Olaf's Snow Fest
I will be the first to admit that your opinion of Olaf's Snow Fest will be greatly influenced by whether you think of “snow” as a normal weather forecast or as a tourist attraction. If you're in the first camp and have more than a passing familiarity with a snow shovel, then you can safely skip Stage 17 and continue on your Disney day.
On the other hand, if you're like me and grew up in Southern Califoria waiting for a winter storm to blanket the local mountains enough to warrant a snow day pilgrimage, then you'll understand the appeal of this charming little snow play area.
Stage 17 has been completely transformed into what appears to be the courtyard of Arendelle Castle. The interior walls are decorated with wooden awnings that appear to be dripping with icicles, and designers made good use of dramatic lighting and projected snow effects to set the mood.
Snow play
About half of the space is filled with a snow play area, complete with a short snow slide. In the center stands the familiar frozen fountain from the movie, and frosty trees are bunched around the area. Plastic snow toys are scattered around the area, and children are encouraged to build snow castles or snowmen. There is also a collection of premade flags, accents, and facial features to help decorate the frosty creations.

The snow slide is admittedly very short, but fun all the same for young sledders. While there are four lanes on the slide, cast members were only running two at a time during our visit. Children under 7 years old must be accompanied by an adult. I was pleased to see that there is a wheelchair lift on the back of the slide, allowing access for those who need asisstance to get to the top of the hill.

The snow play area can accommodate about 50 people (including parents) at a time, and sessions seem to be based on how many people are waiting to play. We arrived fairly early in the day and spent about 15 minutes playing in the snow. When we returned later in the day, the sessions were cut to about 10 minutes. Every hour or so, workers close the entire area and break up the compacted snow to provide a better playing surface.

Disney's PhotoPass photographers are on hand to snap photos of kids as they play in the snow, which is a welcome option for parents who don't want to try to juggle a camera and an anxious child while walking across the slippery icy floor.
Disney “snow” floats down about every 15 minutes, adding a bit more enchantment to the area. A more snow-savvy kid might yawn at this offering, but my young companion, who had never seen snow before, wanted to get right back in line when our session ended.

Having just recently visited the Frozen snow attraction at Walt Disney World, I was struck by how much better the California version is. Not only is the snow play area larger and have a slide, but the overall theming and decor of Stage 17 is vastly superior to the Florida version. Even if you never step foot on the snow, it's worth taking a peek inside the building just to admire the set dressing.
Food and merchandise
On either side of the entrance to Olaf's Snow Fest are food and merchandise stalls. The tiny store sells the requisite assortment of Frozen merchandise, although there's nothing you won't find right outside at Wandering Oaken's Trading Post. The food “stalls”—really a row of counters ending at a pair of cash registers—offer an assortment of hot and cold snacks and beverages. Looking over the menu, I was again struck by how much better the offerings are compared to the Walt Disney World version. While corn dog nuggets and Swedish meatballs aren't high cuisine, it's nice to have a hot snack option that Florida lacks. The cold offerings are compelling, too, including a nice cheese-and-fruit plate, and a cup of sliced vegetables arranged to look like a snowman.

Fans of gingerbread shingles will be pleased to know that there is an Olaf version offered here, along with an Olaf cupcake, or “decorate your own” Olaf cookie kit. You can wash the baked Olafs down with a cup of hot cocoa, served with house-made mint marshmallows.
Entertainment
A group called the Wandering Fjords—fronted by Henry Fjord and Harrison Fjord—perform at intervals throughout the day. Their set does not include the well-known songs from Frozen, but instead feature new tunes based on the various characters. It's a nice bit of atmosphere entertainment to watch while standing in line for the next snow play session.

Meet Olaf
With the Snow Fest finally open, the Olaf meet-and-greet has moved inside Stage 17. Olaf greets visitors in a nice photo area behind the snow play floor, with cast members there to capture the moment for you using your camera or onto a PhotoPass, as you prefer. Disney was using the Fastpass system for the Olaf meet-and-greet when it first opened, but has since switched to a pager system. To get a pager, at least one member of your party must wait in a line outside Stage 17. When we visited, the line just to get the pager was about 30 minutes long. Once you have the pager, expect to wait an hour more to be paged to return to the check-in counter.

The pager works inside Stage 17 and throughout the Hollywood Land area, but you cannot take it much beyond there and expect it to work. Once you return, you are directed to join a line inside Stage 17 to wait for Olaf. We were told the line would be about 10 minutes; in reality it was a bit more than 20 minutes before we met the snowman himself. We overheard cast members saying that the meet-and-greet was running slower than expected that day, so hopefully they can adjust return times in the coming days.
During our visit on Sunday, we had no problem entering and exiting several times before noon, but the building reached capacity shortly thereafter. By 1:00 p.m., cast members were directing new arrivals to a standby line that reached almost an hour long. This attraction has only been open a few days, and won't be heavily marketed by Disney until January, but word of the soft-opening will certainly spread, so the lines will only get longer.
So our strongest advice for those planning to check out the Snow Fest? Get there early. Plan to get your snow play in early in the day, and then thaw out in the California sunshine in the afternoon.
“For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration“
While this show uses the same basic visuals as the Frozen sing-along in Walt Disney World, the new production has a new script that thankfully frees Princess Anna from the awkward comedic foil roll she performs in Florida. This slightly more stately production is hosted by the Royal Storyteller and her apprentice, Eric.

Together, they recount the history of Arendelle—or at least the part covered by the film itself—illustrated with clips taken directly from the movie. The audience is invited to join in singing the “Anthems of Arendelle,” and the words are displayed right on the screen for those who haven't yet memorized them from repeated viewings of the movie.

The sing-along includes the most popular songs from the film, including two versions of “Let It Go.” Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
Anna, Kristoff, and finally Queen Elsa, all make brief appearances in the show, with Elsa leading a second round of “Let It Go” for the big finale.
The former Muppet*Vision 3D theater has been overhauled so thoroughly that it's difficult to imagine that the Muppets will ever return to Disney California Adventure in this attraction. The unique elements of the venue are well-used in this production, with the scrims around the theater used to display digital effects that really enhance the production.

Left to right: Eric, the Royal Storyteller, Queen Elsa, Princess Anna, and Kristoff take the stage during the finale of the “Frozen Sing-Along Celebration.” Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
Though I find this script to be much better than the Florida version, don't expect high art from this show. It's a sing-along with a very thin plot, and it's best not to question why the soon-to-be Royal Storyteller didn't know before now what happened to the former King and Queen, or to ask what anniversary Anna and Kristoff are celebrating.
Be sure to get a Fastpass if the Frozen Sing-Along Celebration is on your must-do list during the holiday rush. Even with up to 14 performances a day, many shows are at capacity, so it's best to have a Fastpass to avoid being shut out in the standby line.

2015 Refurbishment Update
Longtime MousePlanet contributor Mary Kraemer, a travel agent with Escapade Adventures, sent some updated refurbishment information to help fill in the schedule for 2015. Note: Disney last updated its travel agent website on December 16, and there have been several changes since then, including an extension of the Winnie the Pooh refurbishment (now through at least February 8), plus the addition of the Luigi's refurbishment renovation.
As always with refurbishment dates, everything is “subject to change without notice,” but for now, this is the best information we have to date:

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of May 2014.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132) |
A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out December 24–31, 2014; and March 30 through April 4, 2015 . Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |

Discounts for everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
