Measles at Disneyland
An outbreak of measles that began at the Disneyland Resort has state health officials urging parents with unvaccinated children to stay away from large public places like airports, shopping malls—and the Happiest Place on Earth.
The California Department of Public Health links 68 cases—including five Disney workers—to exposure at the Resort in December, 2104. An additional 14 people in seven Western states and in Mexico are believed to have contracted the highly contagious disease either directly during visits between December 15 and December 20, or from exposure to people who had visited the parks during that period.
Disney says that three of the workers have recovered fully and returned to work. An Orange County Register article quotes Dr. Pamela Hymel, Disney's chief medical officer: “Cast members who may have come in contact with those who were positive are being tested for the virus. While awaiting results, they have been put on paid leave until medically cleared.”
Last week, Dr. Gil Chavez, deputy director of the California state health department, said it is “absolutely safe” for people who have been immunized against measles to visit the Disneyland Resort, but added, “If you have a minor that cannot be vaccinated—under the age of 12 months, I would recommend that those children are not taken to places like Disneyland today.” While Chavez clarified that his comments cover, “any place where large numbers of people congregate,” his warning may have parents of young children second-guessing their Disneyland vacation.
The Centers for Disease Control recommends that children get their first dose of the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine after their first birthday, and get their second dose when they enter kindergarten, though the second dose can be given as soon as 28 days after the first dose if deemed appropriate. Children 6 months and older can receive the vaccination early if they are traveling internationally. State officials have even suggested that previously immunized adults may benefit from a booster vaccination. According to the CDC, it can take four to five weeks for a patient to develop immunity after they receive the vaccine.
Without getting on a bandwagon either way, parents need to consult with their health care provider to make the best decision before changing or cancelling their Disney vacation.
Refurbishment photo tour
Disney California Adventure
The popularity of the Frozen Fun promotion seems to be enough to overcome the fact that two of DCA's eight themed areas are closed for refurbishment. Some visitors are waiting almost as long to spend 12 minutes playing in Olaf's Snow Fest as they would to ride Radiator Springs Racers.
The Bakery Tour should reopen today, giving us a first look at the post-Rosie-and-Colin show. There are now two signed entrances for the tour, on opposite ends of the building, so we suspect it's more of a free-flowing walkthrough now.

Though all of the attractions in Grizzly Peak and Condor Flats are closed, the walkway to and from the Grand Californian Hotel remains open for hotel guests to use, and Rushin' River Outfitters is open for their shopping convenience. Cast members along the corridor have set up games for visitors to play, and the UP meet-and-greet has relocated to the entrance to Grizzly Peak.

The renovation of World of Color has apparently extended to the viewing area, and the sightline-blocking trellises were finally removed.

Disneyland
With preparations underway for the park's 60th anniversary, construction walls are the norm inside Disneyland, and more ride closures are scheduled to begin in the coming days. Still, it's a good time for passholders to catch the new Frozen show inside Fantasy Faire, or check out the new art of Frozen exhibit at the Disney Gallery.

Downtown Disney
When Starbucks opened in Downtown Disney in late 2013, Disney said the location was one of two planned for Downtown Disney District. Rumor had it that the former cupcake stand near the AMC Theaters would be the home of the Starbucks kiosk, but nothing panned out. Now Apricot Lane has closed, leaving a very attractive opening on the west end of Downtown Disney. Perhaps Starbucks scrapped the idea of building just a kiosk, and held out for the chance to build a second full-size store? We also note that the Downtown Disney West Side location in Orlando is one of the locations offering the Starbucks Evenings menu, featuring beer, wine and “savory small plates.” Perhaps a second Anaheim location will offer this extended menu?

This and that…
…MousePlanet staffer Stephanie Wien shares:
The Disney Parks/Starbucks partnership has finally yielded a line of branded drinkware. Ceramic mugs have been developed for each of the US theme parks, and will only be available in their respective park locations. Each mug is $14.95. There is also a reusable acrylic tumbler with straw for cold drinks and a ceramic cup with lid for hot drinks, both with the same design that is seen on the Starbucks Disney Park location paper cups.
The Starbucks “You Are Here” mug collection now includes version for Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
The Disney drinkware arrived at the Disneyland Resort last week, and proved to be every bit as popular as you can probably imagine. The acrylic tumbler and ceramic cup both sold out by the weekend, though additional shipments are expected. The You Are Here collection mugs are available inside Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, but don't look for them in the Downtown Disney location – they are only sold inside the theme parks. There is a limit of five of each item per person, per location, per day. You can see all eight designs on our MousePad discussion forum.
…This one slipped past our radar, but Storyteller's Cafe at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel is closed through February 6 for refurbishment. While the restaurant is closed, a neighboring Napa Rose restaurant is offering a character breakfast from 7:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Lunch is available at Whitewater Snacks as usual, and an expanded lunch menu is offered at the Hearthstone Lounge during the refurbishment. At dinner, the restaurant's buffet is served in the Trillium Banquet Room of the Grand Californian Hotel from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Call (714) 781-3463 to make reservations for these alternate breakfast and dinner offerings.
…Screamscape.com reported last week that height balloons were spotted flying over Disneyland before park hours. These types of balloons are used to check sight lines of possible new construction from other areas of the park. According to the report, the balloons were spotted over Toontown, the Autopia and Submarine Lagoon complex, and above Circle-D Ranch (the backstage housing for Disneyland's animals). The site wonders if these balloons were related to the coming Star Wars expansion at the Disneyland Resort.
…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We'll also include a fun MouseAdventure bonus, such as an Eye Spy or a trivia question. To subscribe to our free newsletter, just enter your e-mail in the box below.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of May 2014.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

The ticket is $139 for ages 3 and up, a $10 jump from the 2014 offer. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper for an additional $39, which allows entry to both parks on both days, a savings of up to $39 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket.

2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132) |
A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out March 30 through April 4, 2015 . Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |

Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. Discounts for Southern California residents |
Spring 2015 ticket discount for Southern California residentsSouthern California residents can visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks multiple days before May 21 for as little as $139 using a new discounted ticket that went on sale last week. There are four different tickets available, offering two or three days of admission, with or without park-hopping privileges. The 2-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 21. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. For 2015, there is also a 3-Day 1-Park per Day option ($169) and a 3-Day Park Hopper ticket ($208) in the promotion. If you can use all three admissions and don't care about park hopping, the 3-day, 1-park per day ticket is the best deal, and represents a savings of up to $57 per person.
You can purchase tickets either online at Disneyland.com and print them at home, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If you purchase at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May 21 to use the second (or third) admission. All four versions of this discounted ticket are blocked out March 20 through April 4, and expire May 21. While Disney states that proof of residency is required for purchase and admission, MousePlanet readers who have purchased similar tickets from off-property retailers during past resident discount promotions consistently reported that they were not required to provide proof of residency at the time of purchase. However, be aware that Disneyland Resort Main Gate cast members can—and may—require proof of residency when you first use the tickets. Whether such residency checks occur is an oft-debated topic on our MousePad discussion boards, but it is your responsibility to know the official policy, regardless of what the park's actual practice may be. Now for the official fine print:

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
