Details of Disneyland's Diamond Celebration entertainment
Disneyland celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, with a big Diamond Celebration kick-off happening on May 22 at the Disneyland Resort to mark the milestone.

If last week's Diamond Celebration announcement was not as thorough as the invited fans and media could have wished, we did leave with details about three entertainment options planned for the event: the return of an electrical parade to Main Street, U.S.A.; new multimedia fireworks show by Steven Davison, and; a rework of the World of Color show at Disney California Adventure. You can read about these new offerings in detail in our First Look: Disneyland's Diamond Celebration on MousePlanet.
Watch this video for a look at what's in store from the entertainment division, and read First Look: Disneyland's Diamond Celebration for more details about the three new shows.
During the event, Disney officials had nothing to say about any other aspect of the celebration, such as attractions, special events, food, or merchandise. When asked when the Resort planned to make additional announcements about the anniversary, one park spokesman just advised that reporters keep an eye on the Disney Parks Blog everyday for updates.
Sure enough the very next day, the Disney Parks Blog posted a photo of a new collectible popcorn bucket to be released for the 60th anniversary, followed by another post debuting artwork for the three collections of merchandise planned for the diamond celebration.
On Friday, the official blog posted a teaser about a new addition to the Haunted Mansion. Last week, readers noted that a construction wall had been placed inside the mansion, at the transition between the attic and the graveyard scenes. There has been a lot of speculation that the Hatbox Ghost would return to the Haunted Mansion for the anniversary, fueled in part by Walt Disney Imagineering's display of the animatronic figure's skeleton at the 2013 D23 Expo.

To this writer, it feels that Disney is deliberately dragging out the announcements, not only to prolong the “buzz” factor about the anniversary, but also to reach a different demographic. There are certain groups of fans who will be at Disneyland on May 22 and on July 17 no matter what. My personal Facebook and Twitter feeds were filled with “I know where I'll be on May 22!” posts as soon as Paint the Night was announced. Disney probably already knows to a frightening degree of accuracy who those people are, and even how much they'll spend—as low-hanging fruit, they are a sure bet.

But what about Mr. and Mrs. Midwest, who may not yet be thinking about a Disneyland trip this year? Those folks won't be knocking down the gates on July 17, and Disney doesn't really need or even want them to. Where a single major announcement may not be enough to get them on the phone with their travel agent, a months-long marketing campaign of “news” and “announcements” from Disneyland may finally get them to thibk about coming out in October, or even next year, to see all the additions.
MousePlanet reader Chris Metzger attended the event, and her daughter shared this additional video of the test:

Disney did not give an end date for the 60th anniversary events, and a spokesman quipped, “It's going to be a looong celebration.” These types of marketing campaigns usually last 15 to 18 months, but it won't be a surprise if Disney keeps the party going two years or even longer to bridge the gap until a major new attraction or addition is announced. Disneyland is quite likely counting on the Diamond Celebration to dominate their internal news cycle for the next year, which means we can all expect these announcements to be strung out like… well, like diamonds on a chain.
Passholder Anniversary events continue in 2015
It looks like Disneyland will continue the passholder anniversary events that debuted last year as part of a program to improve passholder renewal and retention rates. Passholders who are set to renew between March 8 and May 23, 2015 are invited to attend an after-hours event on Monday, February 23 from 8:00 p.m. to midnight.
Eligible passholders can invite up to five annual passholder guests, regardless of whether the guests' passes expire during the same window.
The event includes a passholder-only performance of Fantasmic and character meet-and-greet opportunities, with free photos from PhotoPass.
Register via the Annual Passholder website on February 3 starting at 10:00 a.m. (Pacific). Be prepared with the names and pass numbers of your guests, as you must provide those while registering. Registration closes February 21, or when the event fills up, whichever comes first. Note: The last event reached capacity just eight hours after registration opened, so it's best to register as early as possible.
Preview Cinderella at Disney California Adventure
It's Tough to be a Bug was scheduled to be closed through January 29 for refurbishment, but now it looks like the insect actors have a longer hiatus. The show is now dark through March 26 so that Walt Disney Pictures can use the theater to show an exclusive preview of the new live action Cinderella movie that opens in theaters March 13.
This and that…
…New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman and cornerback Malcolm Butler are scheduled to appear at Disneyland today to celebrate their team's victory in Super Bowl XLIX. The Disney Parks Blog did not give a time for the processional featuring the Super Bowl stars.
…It looks like the conversion of La Mascarade d'Orleans into a Pandora jewelry store will take place in just a few days. The New Orleans Square shop closes today, and is scheduled to reopen on Friday, February 6, just in time for Valentine's Day.
…The Orange County Business Journal reported last week that the Disneyland Resort will close a costuming workshop in Fullerton that makes character costumes, laying off 85 workers as of May 29. According to the report, the work will move to Florida's character costuming department. Disney is reportedly assisting the cast members find other jobs.
…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We'll also include a fun MouseAdventure bonus, such as an Eye Spy or a trivia question. To subscribe to our free newsletter, just enter your e-mail in the box below.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of May 2014.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Spring 2015 SoCal Resident Discount Ticket The 2-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 21. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $139 for ages 3 and up, a $10 jump from the 2014 offer. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper for an additional $39, which allows entry to both parks on both days, a savings of up to $39 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket.
There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May 21 to use the second admission. The ticket is blocked out March 20 through April 4, and expires May 21. |
|
Three Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $226/$215 Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $265/$254 |
No discounts currently available to the general public. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them. Spring 2015 SoCal Resident Discount Ticket The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then two additional visits to either park on or before May 21. You can use all three days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $169 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day. The three-day park hopper ticket is $208. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and have until May 21 to use the second and third admission. The ticket is blocked out March 20 through April 4, and expires May 21. |

2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132) |
A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out March 30 through April 4, 2015 . Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |

Discounts for everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Discounts for Southern California residents |
Spring 2015 ticket discount for Southern California residentsSouthern California residents can visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks multiple days before May 21 for as little as $139 using a new discounted ticket that went on sale last week. There are four different tickets available, offering two or three days of admission, with or without park-hopping privileges. The 2-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 21. For 2015, there is also a 3-Day 1-Park per Day option ($169) and a 3-Day Park Hopper ticket ($208) in the promotion. If you can use all three admissions and don't care about park hopping, the 3-day, 1-park per day ticket is the best deal, and represents a savings of up to $57 per person.
You can purchase tickets either online at Disneyland.com and print them at home, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If you purchase at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May 21 to use the second (or third) admission. All four versions of this discounted ticket are blocked out March 20 through April 4, and expire May 21. While Disney states that proof of residency is required for purchase and admission, MousePlanet readers who have purchased similar tickets from off-property retailers during past resident discount promotions consistently reported that they were not required to provide proof of residency at the time of purchase. However, be aware that Disneyland Resort Main Gate cast members can—and may—require proof of residency when you first use the tickets. Whether such residency checks occur is an oft-debated topic on our MousePad discussion boards, but it is your responsibility to know the official policy, regardless of what the park's actual practice may be. Now for the official fine print:

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
