Disney says “Ciao” to Luigi's Flying Tires

It would seem that a Cars Land attraction championed by none other than John Lasseter himself would be fairly safe from demolition, but last week, Disney officially confirmed that Luigi's Flying Tires is closing permanently next Monday, on February 16.

Disney plans to rotate Luigi's Flying Tires out for a new attraction, coming in 2016. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

The Disney Parks Blog says the ride will be gutted and replaced with an as-yet-unknown new ride system. The new attraction is slated to open in early 2016.

Luigi's Flying Tires has been a “love it or hate it” experience since it opened in 2012, and the difference seems to be in how well individuals could control the ride vehicle. It took some finesse to get the tire floating in the right direction, and those who mastered the trick really enjoyed the ride. Those who didn't were understandably frustrated, and were reluctant to try again. In recent months, wait times for the ride rarely exceeded 20 minutes, even on the weekend after Disney announced that the ride would close.

Ready, Set, Register for the Disneyland Half Marathon

General registration opens tomorrow, February 10, for the 2015 Disneyland Half Marathon, and interested runners should prepare to register the moment the website goes live, or risk missing out.

Last year, the Dumbo Double Dare, a back-to-back 10K and half-marathon challenge, sold out in under an hour, as did the standalone 10K event. The runDisney kids races were the next to sell out, in just over three hours, and the half-marathon sold out in nine hours. All events, including the 5K and the Pasta in the Park Party, sold out within 24 hours.

With statistics like this, it was no surprise that the limited spots allocated for Annual Passholder early registration sold out in mere minutes this year. Worse, Disney Vacation Club members were basically shut out of the early registration opportunity because the DVC website did not post the link until most events were already full.

Disney Visa cardholders no longer receive access to early registration offer for runDisney events. While Disney Visa has previously issued discount codes for the events, don't wait to register—the events had sold out by the time Disney Visa posted the codes last year.

With all of the early registration spots already taken, Passholders and DVC members who missed out will need to sign up during general registration tomorrow. Registration opens at 9:00 a.m. (Pacific) Tuesday morning. If the runDisney website crashes, as it often does on registration days, you can go to Active.com directly and search for the Disneyland Half Marathon.

While the pricing list for all the events includes the various price increases based on when you register, we suspect that these events will sell out too quickly for the higher price tiers to kick in.

The 2015 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend follows the same schedule as last year, with the health and fitness expo starting on Thursday, the 5K race on Friday, and the 10K run on Saturday, the day before the half-marathon.

After you register for your event, come add your name to the Team MousePlanet race roster to connect with other runners and share training tips.

Celebrate Lunar New Year at Disney California Adventure

Disney California Adventure is commemorating Lunar New Year with a three-day celebration next weekend, February 19 through 22. Paradise Gardens is the headquarters for this traditional Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese New Year celebration, which marks the Year of the Sheep.

Mushu and Mulan greet guests during the 2013 Lunar New Year celebration at Disney California Adventure park. MousePlanet photo.

Several times a day, Mulan and Mushu will lead Mulan's Chinese New Year Procession along the parade route in front of Paradise Gardens, accompanied by umbrella dancers. Mulan and Mushu will be on hand for a meet-and-greet after each procession. You can also meet Mickey and Minnie at the photo location inside the Paradise Gardens gazebo.

The Paradise Gardens stage will feature community performing groups, and special food and merchandise will be available for sale.

Pandora shop opens in New Orleans Square

La Mascarade d'Orleans, the French-inspired shop in New Orleans, returned this weekend as a Pandora concept store. The official grand opening will not take place until March, but this weekend's soft opening came at a perfect time for buyers seeking Valentine's Day gifts.

The shop is located in the back of New Orleans Square, directly across from the new entrance to Club 33. Bright white cabinets and brilliant lighting fixtures help keep the small shop from feeling claustrophbic, but it takes a bit of cooperation with other shoppers to see into every case. The centerpiece of the store is the harlequin bust behind the register, which is enhanced with special light and sound effects.

The shop features Pandora's line of rings, necklaces and earrings, along with their signature charm bracelet collection. The inventory centers on the Disney collection of charms, including a few Disney Parks-exclusive designs available only at this location, or at the Pandora pop-up location in Walt Disney World.A Pandora salesperson said the store is not yet fully stocked, and more items will arrive in the coming weeks.

The store operates with a combination of Pandora and Disney employees—the salespeople clad in black come from Pandora, while Disney cast members staff the register. Annual passholders recieve a 10 or 20 percent (depending on level) discount through this Thursday, February 12 only. After that, no AP discounts will apply.

This and that…

…While Sleeping Beauty Castle is under wraps in preparation for the 60th anniversary, Disney has covered the scaffolding surrounding the structure with a scrim printed with the Herb Ryman iconic concept art of the castle, one of the very first designs created for Disneyland. Of course, Ryman only sketched the front of the castle, so the back of Disneyland's castle is currently covered with a photo scrim during the refurbishment.

…The Innoventions Dream Home has closed for good in Tomorrowland, and the fictitious Elias family appears to have mostly moved out. The entire lower level of the Innoventions building is currently closed, and the portions of the Dream Home visible from the upper level have been stripped of most furnishings. The visible remaining items are marked with large inventory tags, and some construction walls are in place.

…As work continues to transform Condor Flats into the Grizzly Peak Airfield in Disney California Adventure, some guests at the Grand Californian Hotel may have an unwelcome surprise when they check into their room. MousePlanet reader Sharon booked a room at the Grand Californian Hotel this weekend using Disney Vacation Club points, and opted for a “Premium View,” which require 20% more points to book than a “Standard View” room. A Premium View room is supposed to have a view of Downtown Disney, the pool area or a theme park. As advertised, Sharon's room had a view into Disney California Adventure, overlooking the Condor Flats construction zone.

She tells us that since her family was only staying one night it wasn't a big deal, but she might have asked to be moved if they were staying longer. We think Disney should downgrade the rooms that overlook the construction zone until the work is complete, and charge them as Standard View rooms. Grand Californian hotel rooms are already the priciest available to DVC members – more expensive even than Aulani in Hawaii, or the new Polynesian Villas in Walt Disney World – and members should get full value for their points.

…Vinylmation collectors can no longer trade their unwanted figures with Disneyland cast members. The Resort put an end to official Vinylmation trading on February 6. Customers can still purchase and trade with other guests, but not with cast members. Walt Disney World also ended their Vinylmation trading program this weekend.

…Nearly 1,000 pieces of Disney and Disneyland memorabilia will be sold at auction the weekend of February 28 and March 1, and the collection is now on display in Sherman Oaks. Van Eaton Galleries in Sherman Oaks is hosting the auction for the annoymous collector, and owner Mike Van Eaton told the Orange County Register that the collection may sell for over a million dollars. Disney Legend Bob Gurr helped authenticate the collection, and the Register posted a video of Gurr describing some of the items going on auction.

The exhibit is open until February 27, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. There is no charge to preview the collection, and printed souvenir catalogues are available for $30 to $95. The auction catalogue will also be posted online starting today, and online bidding also starts today. Visit the Van Eaton Galleries website for more information.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts & Promotions

Disneyland prices as of May 2014.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

One Day, One Park Ticket – Regularly $96/$90

One Day Park Hopper – Regularly $150/$144

No discounts currently available to the general public. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them.

Two Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $178/$165

Two Day Park Hopper – Regularly $217/$204

No discounts currently available to the general public. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them.

Spring 2015 SoCal Resident Discount Ticket

The 2-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 21. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $139 for ages 3 and up, a $10 jump from the 2014 offer.

You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper for an additional $39, which allows entry to both parks on both days, a savings of up to $39 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket.

There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May 21 to use the second admission. The ticket is blocked out March 20 through April 4, and expires May 21.

Three Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $226/$215

Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $265/$254

No discounts currently available to the general public. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them.

Spring 2015 SoCal Resident Discount Ticket

The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then two additional visits to either park on or before May 21. You can use all three days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $169 for ages 3 and up.

You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day. The three-day park hopper ticket is $208.

There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and have until May 21 to use the second and third admission. The ticket is blocked out March 20 through April 4, and expires May 21.

2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132)

A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses.

The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each.

For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present.

Tickets are blocked out March 30 through April 4, 2015 . Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day.

For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices.

Five Day Park Hopper – Regularly $305/$289

Six Day or longer tickets No longer offered by Disneyland – some travel providers may offer tickets for 6 days or longer as part of a package to international customers; residents of Canada, Australia, or the U.K. should check with local travel agencies to see what options may be available.

Other Discounts

Did we miss an offer? If you know of an authorized discount on Disneyland Resort tickets, standing offers for Annual Passholders from non-Disney vendors, or other promotions which might interest our readers, please drop us a note!

Discounts for everyone

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.

Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:

  • Disneyland Mickey Mouse Blanket for $19.95 with a purchase of $40 or more.
  • Disneyland Mickey Mouse Tote Bag for $19.95 with a purchase of $25 or more.

Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit.

ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).

Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.

Discounts for Annual Passholders

Discounts for Southern California residents

Spring 2015 ticket discount for Southern California residents

Southern California residents can visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks multiple days before May 21 for as little as $139 using a new discounted ticket that went on sale last week. There are four different tickets available, offering two or three days of admission, with or without park-hopping privileges.

For 2015, there is also a 3-Day 1-Park per Day option ($169) and a 3-Day Park Hopper ticket ($208) in the promotion. If you can use all three admissions and don't care about park hopping, the 3-day, 1-park per day ticket is the best deal, and represents a savings of up to $57 per person.

  • 2-day, 1-park per day – $139
  • 2-day Park Hopper – $178
  • 3-day, 1-park per day – $169
  • 3-day Park Hopper – $208

You can purchase tickets either online at Disneyland.com and print them at home, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores.

If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If you purchase at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature.

There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May 21 to use the second (or third) admission.

All four versions of this discounted ticket are blocked out March 20 through April 4, and expire May 21.

While Disney states that proof of residency is required for purchase and admission, MousePlanet readers who have purchased similar tickets from off-property retailers during past resident discount promotions consistently reported that they were not required to provide proof of residency at the time of purchase. However, be aware that Disneyland Resort Main Gate cast members can—and may—require proof of residency when you first use the tickets. Whether such residency checks occur is an oft-debated topic on our MousePad discussion boards, but it is your responsibility to know the official policy, regardless of what the park's actual practice may be.

Now for the official fine print:

  • Valid only for Southern California residents within ZIP codes 90000-93599 and Northern Baja California residents within ZIP codes 21000-22999; proof of residency is required for purchase and admission.
  • Tickets expire May 21, 2015.
  • 2-Day, 1-Park Per Day ticket is valid for admission for two (2) days to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure park, but not to both parks on the same day.
  • 3-Day, 1-Park Per Day ticket with Magic Morning is valid for admission for three (3) days to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure park, but not to both parks on the same day.
  • 2-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper ticket is valid for admission for two (2) days to both Disneyland and Disney California Adventurepark on the same day.
  • 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper ticket with Magic Morning is valid for admission for three (3) days to both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure park on the same day.
  • Each day of use constitutes one full day of use.
  • Last day of use is May 21, 2015.
  • Blockout days of March 20, 2015 through April 4, 2015 apply.
  • May purchase up to 5 tickets per person per day with valid ID.
  • Tickets may not be sold or transferred for commercial use.
  • Offer may not be combined with other ticket discounts or promotions.
  • Tickets not valid before January 7, 2015.
  • Subject to capacity, restrictions and change without notice.

  • Each Guest must have valid, eligible theme park admission.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
