Counting to 60
As Disneyland counts down the weeks to its 60th anniversary celebration, the Resort Enhancement team is busy covering Sleeping Beauty Castle with sparking accents. The fabric pennants in front of the castle were replaced last week with silver and blue banners that match the bunting festooned across the towers and parapets. New toppers have appeared on several towers, including two large diamond prisms on the front.

The first of what are sure to be many merchandise events for the 60th anniversary was announced last week, and has already sold out. The Diamond Celebration Merchandise Event was offered at $100 per person, and included the first opportunity to purchase commemorative merchandise from a 53-page catalog of items designed for the anniversary. Some items were one-of-a-kind editions created for the event, but the majority of products may be available at Disneyland Resort shops after the event.

More details of the 60th anniversary celebration are expected on the week of April 14, during a media update at the Disneyland Resort.
Fantasmic Dessert Party at Hungry Bear cancelled
When the Hungry Bear Restaurant reopens in Critter Country next week, one major offering leaves the menu. Last week, Disneyland informed cast members that the Fantasmic Dessert Party will no longer be offered.
The $30 dessert package included a plated dessert assortment, live entertainment, and a separate reserved viewing area for Fantasmic on the dock of the former Keel Boat attraction.
The Fantasmic dining package at the Blue Bayou restaurant and the River Belle Terrace restaurant, as well as the Fantasmic On the Go meal at Aladdin's Oasis are all still available. You can read about these other offerings in the Fantasmic Fastpass article on MousePlanet.
Disney Cruise Line launches new placeholder booking policy
Mary Kraemer from Escapade Adventures just shared one of the most welcome policy changes I've seen come from Disney Cruise Line in a while. Effective immediately, passengers on Disney Cruise Line trips can take advantage of the then-current onboard rebooking offer without having to select a sailing date at the time of rebooking.
In the past, to take advantage of the onboard rebooking offers, passengers had to select an actual ship and sailing date right then and there. Many, many people just chose a random date as far in the future as allowed to book a “placeholder” cruise, then moved the reservation to their actual sail date once they decided when and where they really wanted to go.
This wrecked absolute havoc with Disney inventory, and artificially altered the pricing of some cruises for passengers who really wanted to sail. According to travel agents I've spoken with, the final few sailings of each booking window often looked almost completely full, because so many people had parked their placeholder on those dates to leave themselves the most flexibility. Disney's demand-based pricing would then bump fares on those “popular” cruises, resulting in higher fares for people who really wanted to book those sailings. As people moved their placeholders out of those sailings, previously “full” cruises suddenly had excess capacity, and no good way to fill it at the prevailing rate.
Now passengers can just make a deposit for a future cruise without choosing an actual date, which should dramatically reduce the amount of reservation changes and related inventory and pricing issues caused by the old process. A deposit of $200 per person is required to make a no-date placeholder.
Mary notes that there are no other changes to the current onboard offer policies, including the number of bookings allowed or the need to complete travel within 24 months from the date the reservation is booked. It's still not the “voucher” system used by other cruise lines, but it's a major step forward for Disney.
Passengers can still tell the Disney Cruise Line onboard sales manager that they would like the booking to go through their own travel agent, allowing that agent to coordinate that cruise. If you do not do so at the time you make the placeholder, Disney considers it to be an “in-house” or direct reservation, and your travel agent has no access to your reservation information and cannot help with cruise-related issues. You can move the reservation to your personal travel agent within 30 days by filing a request with Disney Cruise Line, but it can be a hassle do do so. Be sure to check with your travel agent for the information needed to make a future cruise reservation while on board, so you don't have to jump through additional hoops after your vacation.
The Egg-stravaganza experience
The 2015 Egg-stravaganza opened at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure this weekend. A dozen oversized eggs decorated with images of Disney characters are hidden throughout each theme park, and egg hunters are challenged to find them all, using a special map sold at selected locations.

The maps are $4.95 plus tax, and no discounts apply. Maps are sold in Disney California Adventure at the Disney Jr. kiosk, Elias & Co., Oswald’s, Radiator Springs Curios, and Treasures in Paradise. Disneyland locations include Disneyana, Disney Showcase, Fairy Tale Treasures, Little Green Men Store Command, Pieces of Eight, Pioneer Mercantile, and Stromboli’s cart.

Each map comes with 12 coordinating stickers to place in the corresponding spots on the map as the eggs are located. Once complete, participants return the map to a redemption location to claim their prize—one of a dozen different two-inch-tall “eggs,” featuring all-new characters for the 2015 promotion. Redemption centers are located at Elias & Company at Disney California Adventure and Disney Showcase in Disneyland.

If you are only in it for the eggs, you need not complete the egg hunt to claim your prize—just buy your map at a redemption center and receive one egg. To complete set of the six egg designs, just purchase six maps, and the cast members will give you a bag containing one of each egg.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132) |
A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out March 30 through April 4, 2015 . Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. 2015 Southern California CityPASS $334/$291

2015 Southern California CityPASS ($334/$291) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and a one-day admission to Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by June 2, 2015. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $36/$28; and/or a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California for $59/$55. Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

If you can use all three admissions and don't care about park hopping, the 3-day, 1-park per day ticket is the best deal, and represents a savings of up to $57 per person.
You can purchase tickets either online at Disneyland.com and print them at home, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If you purchase at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May 21 to use the second (or third) admission. All four versions of this discounted ticket are blocked out March 20 through April 4, and expire May 21. While Disney states that proof of residency is required for purchase and admission, MousePlanet readers who have purchased similar tickets from off-property retailers during past resident discount promotions consistently reported that they were not required to provide proof of residency at the time of purchase. However, be aware that Disneyland Resort Main Gate cast members can—and may—require proof of residency when you first use the tickets. Whether such residency checks occur is an oft-debated topic on our MousePad discussion boards, but it is your responsibility to know the official policy, regardless of what the park's actual practice may be.
