A new beat for Disneyland's band? | Registration opens Tuesday for Avengers Half Marathon Weekend events | Sparkling additions to Sleeping Beauty Castle | This and that… | Crowd Forecast
A new beat for Disneyland's band?
Amid the equine-interest stories about Disneyland's new horses and the seemingly endless stream of posts about all things Frozen, Disney leaders occasionally post a story on the Disney Parks Blog in an effort to put a positive Disney spin on news that may not go over well with fans. Last week's post by Shawn Slater, communications manager for Walt Disney Creative Entertainment, is one such post.
Members of the Disneyland Band perform at the daily flag retreat ceremony. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
On the surface, the post contained news about new entertainment offerings for the 60th Anniversary celebration, with more performances by popular musical acts during the day, and “new musical arrangements and themed performances” from the “iconic Disneyland Band.” When you note that the post was published just as the Disneyland Resort issued a formal “end of run” notice to the members of the Disneyland Band, the announcement takes on a new light.
A reader provided MousePlanet with a copy of the notice given to members, which read in part:
The Disneyland Band current creative offering and configuration is approaching the end of its run. The last day of performance will be July 16th, 2015. As required by our Collective Bargaining Agreement, this memorandum shall serve as notice to each member of the cast. On behalf of the Disneyland Resort we thank you for your many fine performances, your continued support and professionalism.
Members of the band will have the opportunity to audition for the new group, whose performances will include “high-energy choreography” and two more performers per set. Members who do not audition for the new group, or who do not pass the audition, will continue to have full-time employment in one of the smaller “breakout” groups that perform throughout the day. In a posting on their Facebook page, the American Federation of Musicians noted that some of the current band members have been with the group as long as 42 years.
As word spread through social media about the “end of run” notice, the tone of the comments to the Parks Blog article changed from positive notes like “What a great announcement!” and “This will be a great addition for the Diamond Celebration!,” to “This is very sad and disheartening,” and “As much as I appreciate new entertainment, I can’t imagine Disneyland without its current band.”
The Disneyland Band is absolutely an iconic group, and the timing of this change—the day before the park's 60th anniversary—is certainly attracting more attention than it might had Disney made the transition after the milestone. While it's hard to argue that more performers, more performances and more live music is a bad thing for Disneyland visitors, we are certainly mindful of the legacy of the current band members, and hope that Disney works with each one to keep the band together.
In other entertainment news, Disneyland posted an audition call seeking hand-and-rod puppeteers for a “new exciting and high-energy parade that winds its way through the heart of the Disneyland Park.” There were no specifics offered about the position, but the audition comes the same day as Disney auditions male and female parade dancers. Disney has already announced the new Paint the Night parade will debut in May as part of the 60th anniversary celebration, but the version of that parade currently performing in Hong Kong does not use puppetry. It's possible that Disneyland's version of the parade will have an additional unit, possibly featuring the Muppets.
Registration opens Tuesday for Avengers Half Marathon Weekend events
General registration opens tomorrow, Tuesday, April 7 at 9:00 a.m. (Pacific), for the 2015 Avengers Half Marathon weekend events. Annual passholders and Disney Vacation Club members were quick to snap up the spaces allocated for those groups during early registration two weeks ago, especially in the new Captain America 10K and the Infinity Gauntlet Challenge races.
We expect the events to fill up extremely quickly, and strongly encourage everyone who wants to register, to start the process as soon as registration opens.
After you register for your event, come add your name to the Team MousePlanet race roster to connect with other runners and share training tips.

Sparkling additions to Sleeping Beauty Castle
It's been interesting to watch the transformation of Sleeping Beauty Castle in preparation for the 60th Anniversary celebration, and it seems that new decorations are added daily. This week, strands of gemstones were draped around the towers, and finishing details were added to the fabric banners and swags.

This and that…
…Disneyland closes at 7:30 p.m. on April 28 and 30; May 4, 6, and 12. These are not Grad Nite dates, so we wonder if perhaps these early closures are for preview events related to Disneyland's 60th anniversary celebration.
…As we noted in a past Update, the Downtown Disney space formerly leased by Apricot Lane has been subdivided into two spaces. The larger of the two will be a Disney Vacation Club office and showroom. This will be a much more convenient location for prospective DVC members to learn about the timeshare program. There is no indication what will occupy the smaller space, but it's always worth noting that a second Starbucks location was announced to be coming to Downtown Disney.

…Critter Country reopened last week after a lengthy closure. There were no major changes to the land or attractions inside, but Splash Mountain looks to have received a thorough refurbishment.

…A new Olaf sipper cup is now available at Disney California Adventure.
…The dates for the 2015 Grad Nite events are May 13, 15, 16, 18, 26, 27, 29, 30; June 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 12, 13, 17, 19. The 2015 event includes admission to Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disney California Adventure park from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We'll also include a fun MouseAdventure bonus, such as an Eye Spy or a trivia question. To subscribe to our free newsletter, just enter your e-mail in the box below.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 2015.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.
One Day, One Park Ticket – Regularly $99/$93
One Day Park Hopper – Regularly $155/$149 |
No discounts currently available to the general public. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them. |
|

Two Day Park Hopper – Regularly $225/$212 |
No discounts currently available to the general public. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them. Spring 2015 SoCal Resident Discount Ticket The 2-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 21. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $139 for ages 3 and up, a $10 jump from the 2014 offer. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper for an additional $39, which allows entry to both parks on both days, a savings of up to $39 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May 21 to use the second admission. The ticket is blocked out March 20 through April 4, and expires May 21. |
|
Three Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $235/$224 Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $275/$264 |
No discounts currently available to the general public. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them. Spring 2015 SoCal Resident Discount Ticket The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then two additional visits to either park on or before May 21. You can use all three days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $169 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day. The three-day park hopper ticket is $208. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and have until May 21 to use the second and third admission. The ticket is blocked out March 20 through April 4, and expires May 21. |

2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132) |
A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out March 30 through April 4, 2015 . Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |

Other Discounts
Did we miss an offer? If you know of an authorized discount on Disneyland Resort tickets, standing offers for Annual Passholders from non-Disney vendors, or other promotions which might interest our readers, please drop us a note!
Discounts for everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Discounts for Southern California residents | Spring 2015 ticket discount for Southern California residents
Southern California residents can visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks multiple days before May 21 for as little as $139 using a new discounted ticket that went on sale last week. There are four different tickets available, offering two or three days of admission, with or without park-hopping privileges. The 2-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 21. For 2015, there is also a 3-Day 1-Park per Day option ($169) and a 3-Day Park Hopper ticket ($208) in the promotion. If you can use all three admissions and don't care about park hopping, the 3-day, 1-park per day ticket is the best deal, and represents a savings of up to $57 per person.
You can purchase tickets either online at Disneyland.com and print them at home, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If you purchase at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May 21 to use the second (or third) admission. All four versions of this discounted ticket are blocked out March 20 through April 4, and expire May 21. While Disney states that proof of residency is required for purchase and admission, MousePlanet readers who have purchased similar tickets from off-property retailers during past resident discount promotions consistently reported that they were not required to provide proof of residency at the time of purchase. However, be aware that Disneyland Resort Main Gate cast members can—and may—require proof of residency when you first use the tickets. Whether such residency checks occur is an oft-debated topic on our MousePad discussion boards, but it is your responsibility to know the official policy, regardless of what the park's actual practice may be. Now for the official fine print:

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
