Tips for the Tinker Bell half marathon Weekend
The 2015 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend events begin this Thursday, May 7, and continue through Mother's Day Sunday, May 10. The event is expected to draw tens of thousands of runners, walkers, friends, and family to the Disneyland Resort, and includes road closures and operational changes that could impact anyone visiting during this weekend. Here's what runners, tourists and spectators should know as we head into this busy weekend.
Non-runners
The Disneyland Resort is going to be very busy this weekend due to the race, a condition further complicated by the Tomorrowland movie premiere on Saturday, and the Mother's Day holiday on Sunday. The good news is that runners tend not to stay up late the night before races, so you should see lighter evening crowds than you might expect.
Staying at the Disneyland Hotel? The race expo takes place in that hotel's convention center, so expect extra crowds at the shops and restaurants. If you are staying at any of the three Disneyland Resort hotels, expect to race-related noise Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings, beginning in predawn hours, especially if your hotel room faces Disneyland Drive. If you are staying at the Grand Californian Hotel in a room overlooking Downtown Disney, expect to hear cheering from spectators starting around 6:00 a.m. Sunday morning, as the course runs right through Downtown Disney.
While all of the races take place before park opening or outside the parks, you may still experience traffic delays and extra crowds. Give yourself plenty of time if driving to the resort in the morning; race-related road closures are scheduled from 12:01 to 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, and from 12:01 to to 10:00 a.m. on Sunday. For detailed road closure information, see pages 12-13 of the event guidebook.
Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure open at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Early entry for hotel guests and eligible ticket holders is at 8:00 a.m. at Disney California Adventure on Friday, at Disneyland on Saturday, and back at DCA on Sunday.
Spectators
Disney does not allow you to view the half-marathon race course from inside either Disneyland or Disney's California Adventure unless you purchased a silver ($45), gold ($65) or platinum ($99) ChEAR Squad package. Online registration is now closed, but you may be able to purchase packages at the Expo.
There is no theme park viewing for the 10K event, but Disney will allow spectators into the finish line area inside Disney California Adventure for the 5K event.
If you want to come cheer on the runners without purchasing a spectator package, or plan to cheer at the 5K or 10K events, Disney recommends specific viewing areas on property. All of these viewing areas are accessible only by foot; so walk from either the Mickey and Friends parking structure, or from your hotel if staying nearby.
Event | Time | Recommended viewing areas |
---|---|---|
5K | 5:15 to 6:45 | Paradise Pier, inside Disney California Adventure |
10K | 5:30 to 6:00 | Start line at Disneyland Drive to Ball Road Avenue |
5:40 to 6:40 | Mile 2.7 at Esplanade between Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure | |
6:00 to 8:00 | Finish Line, Simba parking lot behind Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel. | |
Half Marathon | 5:30 to 6:00 | Start line at Disneyland Drive to Ball Road Avenue |
5:45 to 7:00 | Mile 3.1 at Esplanade between Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure | |
6:00 to 7:30 | Mile 5.5 through Downtown Disney | |
6:30 to 9:45 | Finish Line, Simba parking lot behind Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel. |
View the race courses on pages 30-35 of the Tinker Bell Half Marathon guidebook.
Detailed information for runners
Because the Expo remains open until 8:00 p.m. each night, Thursday and Friday afternoons may be the best time to attend the expo if all you want to do is get your race packet and get out. If you're running the half marathon, you can visit the Expo between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday to get your race gear. However, be aware that the Downtown Disney parking lot will be closed on Saturday due to the Tomorrowland movie premiere, so we recommend avoiding that day if possible.

Event merchandise
You do not need to collect your race packet – or even be registered to run in one of the events – before you enter the expo to shop. If you want the best merchandise selection, your best bet is to head straight for the sales floor Thursday morning. You can get your gear bag after you shop.
Runner tracking
You can register to receive runner tracking updates via e-mail, text message or Twitter. It appears that Disney no longer offers updates via Facebook. Sign up via the runDisney webform. If you know your runner's bib number, you can text “DLTINK [bib number]” to 72147 to receive updates via text message.
Tomorrowland movie premiere in Downtown Disney
The Disneyland Resort hosts the world premiere of Tomorrowland starring George Clooney, this Saturday, May 9. The screening will be held in Downtown Disney, with an after party inside Tomorrowland in Disneyland.
Though Disney likes to keep mum about the details of these private events, we have some information for those who want to try to catch a glimpse of the stars as they walk the blue carpet, as well as for those who would like to minimize the impact this event will have on their Disneyland visit.
The premiere screening takes place at the AMC Theater in Downtown Disney. The theater will be closed all day on Saturday, May 9 due to the event. The Downtown Disney parking lot will also be closed until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, with all traffic diverted to the Mickey and Friends parking structure.
Disneyland is open from 9 a.m. to midnight on Saturday, but Tomorrowland closes at 5:00 p.m. due to the Tomorrowland after party. This closure also includes the Disneyland Monorail, which will be used to transport movie guests into the after party following the premiere. The schedule for the Jedi Training Academy is changed due to the event, with all shows one hour earlier than normal.
A blue carpet will run from the Downtown Disney valet loop to the AMC theater. A bus and a car from the movie will be placed along the blue carpet, and available for people to take photos in front of until the celebrity arrivals begin at 4:00 p.m. The screening begins at 6:00 p.m., and is scheduled to conclude by 8:00 p.m. Following the screening, the event guests will be transported into Tomorrowland for the after party, which runs until 11:00 p.m.
Disney has scheduled a third performance of World of Color at Disney California Adventure at 11:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Disney strongly (though unofficially, as always), recommends that those who wish to view the celebrity arrivals along the blue carpet “arrive early,” though how early is anyone's guess. The carpet won't even be installed until 2 a.m., and there is the little matter of the Tinker Bell 10K taking place that same morning. If you feel like waiting all day to get a possible glimpse at George Clooney, be prepared with an umbrella or some other form of portable shade. Disney says that “special performances will be visible to guests along the blue carpet,” so be sure to bring extra batteries for your camera.
Refurbishment update
There have been some changes to the refurbishment schedule this week, with the Haunted Mansion definitely opening this Saturday with the new Hatbox Ghost figure in place, but Peter Pan's takeoff delayed until June 1. The reopening of the Matterhorn is now slated for May 22, where some official Disney calenders previously had it reopening on May 15.
Fly 'n' Buy has a new name, and reopens on May 15 as Humphrey's Service & Supplies.

Disney buys Carousel Inn
The Orange County Register last week reported that The Walt Disney Company – through a holding corporation – purchased the Carousel Inn & Suites on Harbor Blvd., across the street from the Disneyland Resort. A Disney spokesperson confirmed the purchase to the paper, but said the current management will continue to operate the hotel.
While the $32 million acquisition has set off a fresh round of speculation about Disney's Anaheim expansion plans, this is not an isolated incident. Disney also owns the Candy Cane Inn property on the Resort side of Harbor, and many additional parcels around Anaheim. The company is currently developing one 11-acre parcel at Ball and Harbor into a new 1400-space cast member parking lot.
New operating plan for Grad Nite
Reader Steven T. wrote to tell me about some changes to the Grad Nite operating plan for 2015:
My wife and I are 5 year veterans of chaperoning Disneyland Grad Nites. I've noticed that the 2015 Chaperone Guide has some new procedures in place. We've been to several different iterations of Grad Nite, from the original midnight to 6am DL version to the 12am to 6am DCA version to the recent park hopper version
.2015 guide has the grads entering DL from a back stage entry point going thru an extensive security check instead of entering with our park hopper with the general populace thru the esplanade. Also schools cannot have more than 2 chaperones enter the Ariel's Grotto chaperone HQs at the same time, so no more group meals together or chaps spending the whole night sleeping instead of watching the grads.
Did DL experience any problems lately at Grad Nites? Did they notice how many chaps just slack around and not take the job of being a chaperone seriously? We've never seen any problems,we stay awake the whole night and love every minute of Grad Nites!
As I replied to Steven, the additional bag check makes little sense to me when you consider the teens can easily leave the park and even the Resort once they've cleared the check. I'd love to hear from other repeat Grad Nite chaperones about their experiences, and thoughts on the changes to this year's event.
This and that…
…Disneyland closes at 7:30 p.m. several nights between now and the May 22th kickoff of the 60th anniversary celebration. If you're visiting in the next two weeks, be sure to keep an eye on the schedule to maximize your park time.
…Tickets are now on sale for the Disneyland Alumni Club's Gala Celebration in honor of the park's 60th anniversary. The event is on Saturday, August 1st, and features guests including Disney Legend Tony Baxter; Bill Farmer, the voice of Goofy and Pluto; retired Coke Corner pianist Rod Miller; and a special appearance by Mickey Mouse. Tickets are $140 per person, and a portion of the proceeds benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Fullerton. Visit the Disneyland Alumni Club website for details.

Resort Events
Check here to see if a large convention, competition, or park event might fall during your next trip to the Disneyland Resort. If you know of any in-park events, official or unofficial, that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2015
- 2015 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 7–10 (Mother's Day weekend). All events are sold out. Details at the runDisney website.
- Frozen Fun – closes on May 15.
- Grad Nite events – This party for high school seniors graduating in 2015 will be held on these dates: May 13, 15, 16, 18, 26, 27, 29, 30; June 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 12, 13, 17, 19. The 2015 event includes admission to Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disney California Adventure park from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
- 2015 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – September 3–6. All events are sold out. Details at the runDisney website.
- Dapper Day Fall Soiree (unofficial event) – September 18. Details at the Dapper Day website.
- Gay Days at Disneyland – October 2–4. (Unofficial event) More information on the event website.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 15-16. Expect unusually large attendance levels October 16–20 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- 2015 Avengers Half Marathon Weekend – November 12–15. All events are sold out. Details on the runDisney website.
2016
- 2016 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend – January 14–17. Registration opens June 16.
- 2016 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 5–8. Registration opens August 11.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 20–21.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 2015.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

No discounts currently available to the general public. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them. Spring 2015 SoCal Resident Discount Ticket The 2-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 21. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $139 for ages 3 and up, a $10 jump from the 2014 offer. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper for an additional $39, which allows entry to both parks on both days, a savings of up to $39 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May 21 to use the second admission. The ticket is blocked out March 20 through April 4, and expires May 21. |
|
Three Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $235/$224 Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $275/$264 |
No discounts currently available to the general public. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them. Spring 2015 SoCal Resident Discount Ticket The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then two additional visits to either park on or before May 21. You can use all three days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $169 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day. The three-day park hopper ticket is $208. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and have until May 21 to use the second and third admission. The ticket is blocked out March 20 through April 4, and expires May 21. |

2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132) |
A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out March 30 through April 4, 2015 . Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |

Discounts for everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

For 2015, there is also a 3-Day 1-Park per Day option ($169) and a 3-Day Park Hopper ticket ($208) in the promotion. If you can use all three admissions and don't care about park hopping, the 3-day, 1-park per day ticket is the best deal, and represents a savings of up to $57 per person.
You can purchase tickets either online at Disneyland.com and print them at home, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If you purchase at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May 21 to use the second (or third) admission. All four versions of this discounted ticket are blocked out March 20 through April 4, and expire May 21. While Disney states that proof of residency is required for purchase and admission, MousePlanet readers who have purchased similar tickets from off-property retailers during past resident discount promotions consistently reported that they were not required to provide proof of residency at the time of purchase. However, be aware that Disneyland Resort Main Gate cast members can—and may—require proof of residency when you first use the tickets. Whether such residency checks occur is an oft-debated topic on our MousePad discussion boards, but it is your responsibility to know the official policy, regardless of what the park's actual practice may be. Now for the official fine print:

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
