Haunted Mansion: Hatbox Ghost in, original pet cemetery out
One of the original Happy Haunts has reappeared at Disneyland's Haunted Mansion. The Hatbox Ghost debuted Saturday morning, with large crowds in attendance to see the return of a figure some considered to be an urban legend. Disney was clearly expecting strong interest in the new ghost, and opened Fastpass service for the weekend. Once the Fastpass tickets were gone, the wait time swelled to as much as 75 minutes.

ThemeParkHD posted a good video of the elusive specter (see below). For those who want information without spoilers, the Hatbox Ghost is located after the bride, on the right as you transition from the attic to the graveyard scene. This is a new space created where there was previously no show scene. It's impossible to miss him. and you should be able to see the effect in the time your buggy is in front of his location.

MousePlanet columnist David Koenig writes that even as the Hatbox Ghost has reappeared at the mansion, another longtime feature might be disappearing:
The scuttlebutt among cast members is that Walt Disney Imagineering has been eyeing the attraction's original pet cemetery, which is located on the north backstage side of the building.
The cemetery is the final resting place of Stripey the skunk, Bully the bullfrog, Big Jake the dog, and Miss Kitty the cat.
Most guests, apart from those who are “backdoored” around the side of the building, don't even know it exists.
Team Disney Anaheim considers the area “dead space.” So, WDI is considering demolishing the cemetery in order to make it a parking lot for guest ECVs.
The pet graveyard, admitted one cast member, “is not much, but it is something guests often ask about and request to see,” adding that “it is part of the Mansion's history.”
The area was originally built about 35 years ago. In 1993, a larger pet cemetery was added on-stage, in front of the Mansion.
Frozen Fever melts away, but Olaf and friends to stick around
Frozen fans can still get their fix in the “For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration” in the Crown Jewel Theatre. The show remains on the entertainment schedule after the official end of Frozen Fun, and Disney has made no announcement about an end of the show.
You can still meet Olaf in Hollywood Land after Frozen Fun officially ends. The meet-and-greet is scheduled from park opening until 5:00 p.m. daily through Saturday, June 13, the last date for which detailed entertainment schedules were available as of press time. Likewise, Anna & Elsa's Royal Welcome continues in the Animation Building. Fastpass is used for both meet-and-greet experiences, so be sure to grab one before you start your day.
Diamond Anniversary photo ops and the Word of the Day?
Last month, Disneyland announced the Diamond Days Sweepstakes, a promotion tied to the park's 60th anniversary celebration. The contest offers daily and weekly prizes, including: VIP tours; a replica Cinderella slipper topped with a diamond and topaz pendant; invitations to private events like a tailgate party in Cars Land; or even a 1-carat, custom-engraved diamond gemstone, along with an overnight stay in the Disneyland Dream Suite.

Disney provided no details about how to enter the contest, but we think we have an inkling. Disney is set to install “word of the day” signs at each of the theme park entrance locations:
- One in Downtown Disney (where the Monorail provides entrance to Disneyland)
- One at the Grand Californian Hotel (which has an entrance gate to Disney California Adventure)
- One in the Esplanade between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure

When the contest website was first published, it read that visitors “must be present on the Disneyland Resort premises” to enter or win the prizes. That language has since been removed, but we're guessing that Disney will use this “word of the day” as part of the entry process. You may be required to submit the word via email, text message, or tweet (Twitter message) to enter, and will be notified if you are randomly selected as the winner. Or maybe a new version of the Dream Squad will approach random visitors in the parks or hotels and award prizes if they can produce the word of the day on request. Either way, the “on the Disneyland Resort premises” requirement prevents people from entering the contest from their home in the other side of the country as soon as the word of the day is shared via social media.

Disney says that all details and official rules will be announced on Friday, May 22, but also that “specific prizes to be awarded in the weekly sweepstakes will be announced online the preceding week,” so we may know more by this Friday (May 15). One thing that hasn't changed is the eligibility requirements—the contest is open to legal residents of the 50 U.S. states, D.C., Mexico, and Canada (excluding Quebec) who are the age of majority as of date of entry.

Along with the three word of the day signs, Disney is also set to install a handful of 60th Anniversary photo spots around the resort. So far, we know of these locations for photo spots:
- California Screamin'
- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
- Matterhorn Bobsleds
- Grizzly River Run
Lenore Moreno sets new course record at 2015 Tinker Bell Half Marathon
With a finish time of 1:15:55, Southern Californian Lenore Moreno (from West Covina) not only won yesterday's 13.1-mile Tinker Bell Half Marathon in Disneyland, but she also shattered the course record (of 1:24:11) by over 8 minutes. [This comes out to a pace of roughly 5:47 per mile.]
“Just being inside Disneyland, I think that's what gave me that push and helped me to forget about how long this half marathon was and just to enjoy the moment,” Moreno said. “I couldn't have done it anywhere else. Passing under that castle was just magical.”
Topping the field of 13,000 runners was second-place finisher Ann Mazur of Charlottesville, Virginia, who finished in 1:24:10. Right at her heels was Anne-Marie Nuno of Irvine, California, who came in third at 1:24:21.

Although individual male runners are not eligible for prizes in the women-focused event, Michael Long (34) of London, England, was the fastest male finisher, crossing in 1:21:27.
Kellie Nickerson (29) of Albuquerque, New Mexico, won the 6.2-mile Tinker Bell 10K, finishing in 39:37. Nickerson took first place in the inaugural half-marathon event in 2012. Staci Foster (26) also of Albuquerque, took second place in 41:55. Edith Martinez (47) of Brea, California, took third place with a time of 42:34.
For the men, Kris Przeor (36) of Chandler, Arizona was first in the Tinker Bell 10K with a time of 38:01. Bryant Larson (14) finished in second place with a time of 38:08. Third place went to Brandon Shuck (16) of Mountain View, California.

The 2015 Tinker Bell Half Marathon weekend also featured the Inaugural Pixie Dust Challenge, which combined the 10K and Half Marathon events. Disney has released the results of that challenge, but there was not a separate prize in that category. An estimated 32,000 runners competed in the weekend events, which also included a (3.1-mile) Never Land Family Fun Run 5K and runDisney Kids Races.

Expect unusually large attendance levels October 16–20 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- 2015 Avengers Half Marathon Weekend – November 12–15. Most events are sold out, but space remains in the half marathon race. Details on the runDisney website.
2016
- 2016 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend – January 14–17. Registration opens June 16.
- 2016 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 5–8. Registration opens August 11.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 20–21.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132) |
A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out March 30 through April 4, 2015 . Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. 2015 Southern California CityPASS ($334/$291) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and a one-day admission to Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by June 2, 2015. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $36/$28; and/or a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California for $59/$55. Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

| Discounts for Southern California residents | Spring 2015 ticket discount for Southern California residents
Southern California residents can visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks multiple days before May 21 for as little as $139 using a new discounted ticket that went on sale last week. There are four different tickets available, offering two or three days of admission, with or without park-hopping privileges. The 2-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 21. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $139 for ages 3 and up, a $10 jump from the 2014 offer. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper for an additional $39, which allows entry to both parks on both days, a savings of up to $39 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket. For 2015, there is also a 3-Day 1-Park per Day option ($169) and a 3-Day Park Hopper ticket ($208) in the promotion. If you can use all three admissions and don't care about park hopping, the 3-day, 1-park per day ticket is the best deal, and represents a savings of up to $57 per person.
You can purchase tickets either online at Disneyland.com and print them at home, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If you purchase at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May 21 to use the second (or third) admission. All four versions of this discounted ticket are blocked out March 20 through April 4, and expire May 21. While Disney states that proof of residency is required for purchase and admission, MousePlanet readers who have purchased similar tickets from off-property retailers during past resident discount promotions consistently reported that they were not required to provide proof of residency at the time of purchase. However, be aware that Disneyland Resort Main Gate cast members can—and may—require proof of residency when you first use the tickets. Whether such residency checks occur is an oft-debated topic on our MousePad discussion boards, but it is your responsibility to know the official policy, regardless of what the park's actual practice may be.
