Disneyland surveys customers about demand-based ticket prices
Surveys sent out to Disneyland and Walt Disney World visitors last week have vacation planners wondering if the Disney theme parks are about to completely restructure their ticket pricing model, or just simply raise prices once again.
As Disneyland celebrates its 60th anniversary, park managers may be looking to change the way tickets are sold. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
Twitter member James Feeney (@CoasterStorm) posted photos of calendars included in the surveys. One calendar offers two ticket types, with Silver tickets valid Monday through Thursday, and Gold tickets valid Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. In this version, a Silver one-day, one-park ticket is $105 (up from the current $99). The Gold ticket is an additional $10, or $115 per person. One-day park-hopper tickets would be $160/170, with a 10 percent discount for children ages 3–9.

The second model proposes three ticket types: Bronze, Silver and Gold—and the associated calendar resembles the Annual Passport blockout calendar. Bronze tickets would be valid during off-season weekdays, like the Southern California annual pass. Silver tickets would be valid for all but 90 days a year, with peak summer and holiday periods blocked out, as is the case with the Deluxe annual pass. Gold tickets could be used 365 days a year, just like a Premium annual pass.
Pricing for this three-tier system starts at $99 for a one-day, one-park Bronze ticket, with Silver and Gold tickets priced at $105 and $115, respectively. One-day park-hopper tickets would be $155, $160, and $170 under this model.
What stands out on this second option is the way multi-day tickets are priced. Visitors staying for three days might find themselves needing one Gold ticket, one Silver ticket, and one Bronze ticket to cover their stay, a situation the current pricing model has never needed to accommodate. Rather than create an extremely complicated chart to cover every possible combination of multi-day tickets a visitor might need, Disney instead proposed a flat discount for longer stays. Customers would purchase the number of one-day tickets needed to cover their stay, and take 5 to 20 percent off the total depending on their length of stay.
This actually seems to roll back a trend from the last several years that applied the smallest price increases to the longest tickets. At $275, a five-day one-park-per-day ticket is currently a little more than half the cost ($495) of five one-day tickets. The chart included in Disney's survey shows a maximum discount of 20 percent for multi-day tickets, a substantial price hike. Under this proposed plan, a five-day, one-park-per-day Bronze ticket would jump to $396, a 44 percent increase from the current price. A five-day, one-park-per-day Gold ticket would be $460, an increase of 67 percent.
Demand-based pricing is a fact of life in almost every aspect of the vacation experience, from airplane tickets to hotel rooms. Disney even raises prices on the popular character meals during the holiday season, and some are wondering why it has taken the company this long to apply the same logic to admission tickets.
Tiered pricing might also somewhat help address complaints of off-season visitors, who currently pay the same admission fees, but experience shorter park hours, fewer entertainment offerings, and more attraction refurbishments during their visits. It's hard to know if a $10 or $15 discount will help convince people to alter their travel plans, but it might make a dent in peak season crowding.
This survey has sparked a number of questions from readers, who are asking if we are to expect Disneyland to raise ticket prices again so soon after raising prices in March. We've suspected that 2015 may be another double-increase year, but we have not heard anything to indicate a price hike is looming in the next month. If it happens, we would expect to see another increase around Labor Day.

Early registration opens Tuesday for 2016 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend events
Early registration opens at 9 a.m. Pacific time Tuesday, June 2 for the 2016 Star Wars Half Marathon weekend events, and eligible runners should definitely take advantage of the change to secure a spot in these popular events.
While early registration officially lasts until June 15, in reality there are a very limited number of spots available during early registration period, and these often sell out in mere moments. Links are posted on the Disneyland passholder site, Walt Disney World passholder site, and Disney Vacation Club member site the morning registration begins. Disney Visa cardholders no longer receive access to early registration offer for runDisney events.
Disney Vacation Club members were basically shut out of the early registration opportunity for the Disneyland Half Marathon events earlier this year, because the DVC website did not post the link until most events were already full. Readers who have both annual passholder and DVC eligibility should first check the applicable AP website for the link.
General registration opens Tuesday, June 16 at 9:00 a.m. (Pacific), for those who missed or are not eligible for early registration.
After you register for your event, come add your name to the Team MousePlanet race roster to connect with other runners and share training tips.

Red Car Trolley News Boys carry a new tune
Disneyland is changing up a number of the live entertainment offerings for the 60th Anniversary, and the Red Car Trolley News Boys have added a new song to their popular show. Called “If You Can Dream It, You Can Do It,” the new song has Mickey telling the skeptical news boys about his dreams of Hollywood stardom. The new song begins around the 9:15 mark of the video below, if you're already familiar with the show and want to skip to the new part.
The “Seize the Day” section of the show was shortened to add the new song, but there is still a small tag of the “Newsies” standard at the end. As mentioned last week, Minnie Mouse makes a brief appearance in this new version of the show, and also participates in meet-and-greets on Buena Vista Street.

MousePlanet reader wins daily prize in Diamond Days sweepstakes
A few days after Disneyland's Diamond Days sweepstakes began, a reader asked via our Facebook page if there was any way to know who was winning the prizes. As it happens, that very day a MousePlanet reader won the daily prize, and shared a brief report of his family's experience on our MousePad discussion forum. We're looking forward to an expanded trip report once they return from vacation.
The dual nature of the contest has some readers confused, so we wanted to clarify the entry process. Once again, it's easiest to consider this to be two different contests:
1) Daily contest – follow these steps if you will be on Disneyland Resort property around 11 a.m. that day:
- Look for the Word of the Day – It's posted on signs outside each of the four bag check areas (both sides of the Esplanade; Disneyland Monorail entrance; Grand Californian Hotel entrance). It's also posted on the official contest website each morning.
- Text to enter – Use your phone to correctly text the Word of the Day to 347639 between 7:00 a.m. and 10:59 a.m.
- If you don't have a phone – Visit the Guest Relations window outside DCA and enter via the provided tablet. However, be aware that you'll need to return to that window between 11 .m. and Noon to see if you've won and claim your prize.
No need to enter twice – If you submit your text entry between 7:00 a.m. and 10:59 a.m., you are automatically entered into both the daily and weekly drawings.
Check your phone around 11 am. – Disney will notify the winners via reply text or phone call around 11:00 a.m. that same day. Winners have 60 minutes to claim the prize at the Disneyland Resort, or forfeit the prize.
2) Weekly contest – follow these steps if you won't be on Disneyland Resort property that day:
- Look for the Word of the Day – It's posted on the official contest website.
- Enter online – Complete the form at the official contest website anytime between 7:00 a.m. and 10:59 a.m.
– or –
- Text to enter – Use your phone to correctly text the Word of the Day to 347639 anytime between 11:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m.
Winners are announced every Tuesday – Disney will notify the winners via phone, text or e-mail, using the information provided in the entry form. Winners have two days to claim the prize, or forfeit the prize.
Disneyland debuts new Enchanted Windows
Disneyland announced in early May that six new “Enchanted Windows” would be installed outside the Main Street Emporium as part of the 60th Anniversary celebration. These windows harken back to the animated windows that were once created to support new Disney animated features.

The first window to debut is Peter Pan. Imagineers were working on the window right up until the moment visitors entered Disneyland for the 24-hour party on May 22, and many stayed to watch the reactions of the first tourists to spot the new addition. The window first shows the nursery, where Peter has just taught the Darling children how to fly, and then transforms into the skies above London as the group heads for Neverland.

You can see the effect in the brief MousePlanet Instagram video below. Unfortunately, the window became stuck in mid-transformation over the weekend, and is currently fixed on the nursery scene. We've also shared the Disney Parks video, where John Gritz, Creative Designer at Walt Disney Imagineering describes all six windows scheduled to debut this summer.

This and that…
…One of the gifts distributed to media and invited guests during the 60th Anniversary premiere events at Disneyland was a specially designed Coca-Cola bottle featuring the anniversary logo. MousePlanet has listed the bottle we received eBay, with all proceeds to benefit Children's Hospital Orange County via the Giving Works program. If you or someone you know are looking for a most unusual souvenir of Disneyland's 60th anniversary, or are a collector of Coca-Cola memorabilia, be sure to check out this auction. The auction closes Sunday, June 7 at 8:12 p.m. Pacific.

…With the Innoventions building now closed for an as-yet-unannounced-project, the meet-and-greet with Captain America and Thor has relocated across the way. The duo now greet visitors in front of a makeshift photo backdrop that is a far cry from their elaborate areas inside Innoventions. The new setting has one advantage, allowing visitors to stand in just one line to meet both Avengers. Be forewarned that the line is mostly unshaded, and the wait can exceed 30 minutes on busy days.

…The smoking location along Big Thunder Trail at Disneyland is closing on June 3 to make room for one of the new Diamond Celebration photo spots. This leaves just two smoking areas inside Disneyland: one between the Matterhorn and Autopia, and one at the former keel boat dock along the Rivers of America. Note: This second location closes at 6 p.m. on nights when Fantasmic is scheduled. Smoking is also allowed outside the Disneyland gates, in the esplanade between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. Thanks to reader Alan for the tip.

…New souvenir sipper cups have replaced the sipper cones in Cars Land. These new cups are made to look like oil cans, and come in three colors. The cups are $11.01 (including tax) at Cozy Cones 1, 2, 3 and 5, and include a fountain drink. The cans are not available at cone #4, and are not available with the frozen Cars Land drinks.

Expect unusually large attendance levels October 16–20 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- 2015 Avengers Half Marathon Weekend – November 12–15. Most events are sold out, but space remains in the half marathon race. Details on the runDisney website.
2016
- 2016 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend – January 14–17. Registration opens June 16.
- 2016 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 5–8. Registration opens August 11.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 20–21.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 2015.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132) |
A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out March 30 through April 4, 2015 . Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |

Discounts for everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:

This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
