And the band played on | Registration opens Tuesday for 2016 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend events | Cinderella Enchanted Window debuts | New regulation sinks Disney's future “cruises to nowhere.” | This and that… | Crowd Forecast
And the band played on
We reported in April that the Disneyland Resort issued a formal “end of run” notice to current members of the Disneyland Band, telling members that the “creative offering and configuration” would be disbanded as of July 16, 2015. The members of the band were given the opportunity to audition for the new group, which sources told us would include two additional performers per set, and include “high-energy choreography.”

Current performers who were not chosen to continue with the new Disneyland Band will continue to perform in smaller breakout groups starting July 17. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
Current band members were told that those who chose not to audition for the new group, or who did not pass the audition, would continue to have full-time employment in one of the smaller “breakout” groups that perform throughout the day. The Orange County Register reports that only two members of the original band will be part of the new group that debuts on July 17, the day Disneyland marks its 60th anniversary. A KCET article claims that a majority of the current band chose not to even audition for the new group.

The Facebook group “I Support Walt Disney's Disneyland Band” claims that the changes will begin even earlier, and that some members of the current band will begin to rotate out of the group as soon as this week. The group is hosting a series of meet-ups today, Monday, June 15, at Disneyland for what they call the last day of performances for the full current Disneyland band. The show times are:
- Castle Show with Band and Characters at 11:25 a.m.
- Town Square Concert at 12:15 p.m.
- Flag Retreat at 5:15 p.m.
Registration opens Tuesday for 2016 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend events
Registration opens at 9 a.m. Pacific time Tuesday, June 16 for the 2016 Star Wars Half Marathon weekend events. In anticipation of strong demand for this event, runDisney published a list of tips to help runners prepare to register as quickly as possible:
- Create an active.com profile prior to registration opening.
- Be ready to register at Noon ET (9 a.m. Pacific time). Follow rundisney.com and the runDisney social media channels for the registration link.
- Once you're in the queue, you have 15 minutes to complete the registration process. After 15 minutes, your spot is no longer guaranteed.
- If you receive an “on hold” message this means the queue is currently full. Continue to check back.
- Have everyone in your party register only themselves for a faster registration process.
- Look to travel providers and charity groups for additional registration opportunities.
These tips are good advice, but #5 poses a challenge for parents who need to register themselves and their minor children for the events. Based entirely on the rate at which the events filled during the Annual Passholder presale two weeks ago, here is our suggestion as to how to prioritize your registrations if you are hoping to register more than one person or for more than one event:
- Star Wars Rebel Challenge
- runDisney Kids Races
- Star Wars 10K (if you're not running or couldn't get into the Rebel Challenge)
- Star Wars 5K
- Star Wars Half Marathon (if you're not running or couldn't get into the Rebel Challenge)
It looks like runDisney has added merchandise bundles to registration this year. If you're only registering for one race, you should have time during your 15-minute window to add those to your registration. Be warned, one reader reported that Active.com added a $22.25 “processing fee” to her registration that included merchandise, compared to a $7.65 processing fee for a second race-only registration. She thinks Active charges a fee for each item in the registration, be it a race entry fee or a jacket. Double-check your total before you hit “submit,” and decide if you really want to pay that much of a service fee to reserve your merchandise in advance.
After you register for your event(s), come add your name to the Team MousePlanet race roster to connect with other runners and share training tips.

Cinderella Enchanted Window debuts
Disney has drawn back the curtain on the second of the new Enchanted Windows planned for Main Street, U.S.A. The Cinderella window is on a large turntable, and rotates between two scenes. On one side, the Fairy Godmother transforms Cinderella's torn dress into a beautiful ball gown. On the other side, Cinderella dances with Prince Charming as mice Gus and Jaq frolic on a railing.

As with the Peter Pan window, which debuted in May and has worked only sporadically since, it appears there is a minor technical glitch with this new window. It appears that a curtain intended to drop down between the two sides of the display is stuck in the “up” position, allowing viewers to see special effects probably not intended to be shown. Even so, this enchanting new window is drawing crowds, and is a nice addition to Main Street. There are four more windows set to open this summer as part of Disneyland's 60th anniversary promotion.

New regulation sinks Disney's future “cruises to nowhere.”
According to Cruise Critic, a new US customs regulation prohibits so-called “cruises to nowhere” starting in 2016, putting an end to an infrequent but popular offering by the Disney Cruise Line.
A cruise to nowhere departs from a US port, spends a day or two at sea, then returns to the same US port without a stop in a foreign country. Disney Cruise Line has two such sailings, which they call Getaway cruises, scheduled from San Diego in October this year. The cruise line infrequently schedules the short no-stop cruises to fill holes in their normal schedule due to ship repositioning, such as moving the Disney Wonder from Florida to Canada for the Alaska cruise season, and also for “shakedown” cruises following major renovations to their ships.
This new rule won't impact any of Disney's already-announced cruises—there were no true cruises-to-nowhere on the 2016 itinerary. The 3-day Getaway cruises scheduled for next year include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico.
This and that…
…This is the final week of the 2015 Grad Nite season at the Disneyland Resort. The last two events take place Wednesday, June 17, and Friday, June 19.
…Pet owners may want to check out the new Disney Tails line of accessories released at the Disneyland Resort. The collection includes collars, leashes, costumes, chew toys, and food bowls for dogs.

…Reader Scott Suamaya writes, “There will be an All-American College Band Reunion performance at Disneyland on August 1st at 3:45 stepping off from Town Square and ending (presumably) at the Castle. The performance will include alumni of the CA and FL AACB programs spanning decades.”
…The Disneyland Alumni Club is offering a set of four exclusive prints by popular artist SHAG (Josh Agle) to commemorate Disneyland's 60th Anniversary. Here are the details from the group's website:
This Barbershop Quartet print is one of four exclusive images created by artist SHAG for the Disneyland Alumni Club. Image courtesy Disneyland Alumni Club.
If you'd like original art with a distinctly magical Disneyland feel, then the Disneyland Alumni Club has just the art for you. Josh Agle, better known as SHAG, created a series of four special pieces for the club.
The club is pleased to announce that it can offer a set of the four special autographed prints for sale to its members. Each piece is 8.5” by 11” and is a representation of the live entertainment, current and past, as only Shag can create them. Each of the limited run prints are numbered and autographed by SHAG. There is also a certificate of authenticity accompanying the prints signed by SHAG.
The four Disneyland entertainment groups represented are: the Pearly Band, the Pirate Band, the Dapper Dans, and Billy Hill & The Hillbillies.
The cost? $190.00 plus shipping at $15.00 and sales tax of $16.40 for a total of $221.40. This is a limited edition, and will not be reprinted.
To order, send a check or money order made out to the Disneyland Alumni Club in the amount of $221.40, along with a note on where to ship the art (home or business addresses only, no P.O. Boxes) to: Disneyland Alumni Club, P.O. Box 17280, Anaheim, CA. 92817.
Any pieces not sold will be offered for sale at the club’s booth at the Disneyana Fan Club Show and Sale on Sunday, July 19, 2016, at the Wyndham Anaheim Garden Grove Hotel.

- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 15-16. Expect unusually large attendance levels October 16–20 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- 2015 Avengers Half Marathon Weekend – November 12–15. Most events are sold out, but space remains in the half marathon race. Details on the runDisney website.
2016
- 2016 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend – January 14–17. Registration opens June 16.
- 2016 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 5–8. Registration opens August 11.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 20–21.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 2015.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.
One Day, One Park Ticket – Regularly $99/$93
One Day Park Hopper – Regularly $155/$149 |
CHOC-tober one-day, one-park ticket – $50 A discounted price available to participants in the 2015 CHOC Walk, an annual fund raiser for Children's Hospital Orange County. The 2015 event is Sunday, October 11. Each walker who raises at least $65 can purchase up to five discounted tickets following the event. The tickets are valid starting October 11, 2015. CHOC has not yet announced the end date of the CHOC-tober promotion, but we will share details as soon as we know them. For this 25th Anniversary event, CHOC has raised the minimum fund-raising commitment. There is no charge to register for the walk, but walkers (ages 3 and up) must commit to raise $65 before the event. We invite MousePlanet readers, friends and family members to join our team for the event. No discounts currently available to the general public. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them. |

2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132) |
A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |

Discounts for everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
