Celebrating July Fourth at the Disneyland Resort
Disneyland's Independence Day celebration is a one-night-only affair this year, breaking with recent tradition of presenting the holiday fireworks on several nights to help spread out the crowds. Based on a Disney Parks Blog posting last week, and with the exception of two military bands scheduled for a multi-day run this week, it appears that the 4th of July nighttime entertainment will consist of patriotic “tags” added to the Disneyland Forever fireworks and World of Color – Celebrate.
At Disneyland, the Disneyland Forever fireworks are scheduled at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, the 4th of July. That performance will conclude with a “a patriotic, pyrotechnic grand finale” that night only.
At Disney California Adventure, all three performances of World of Color – Celebrate will begin with a “special pyrotechnic water display.” Shows are at 9 p.m., 10:15 p.m. and 11:15 p.m.
There are two performances of the Paint the Night parade scheduled for Independence Day, at 8:50 p.m. and 11:59 p.m.
Fantasmic is on the summer schedule, with performances at 9:00 p.m. and 10:45 p.m.. Disneyland has not officially scheduled a third performance for that day, but park managers may add another performance if park attendance reaches a certain threshold.
Disneyland's flag retreat ceremony begins at 5:15 p.m., and features the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band and the United States Air Force Honor Guard. The ceremony is especially well-attended on the Fourth of July holiday, so be sure to arrive early for the best view.
The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band has three additional appearances at the Disneyland Resort on July 4th.
- 11:30 a.m. – Downtown Disney stage (near ESPN Zone)
- 4:10 p.m. – Disneyland parade route, before Mickey's Soundsational parade
- 7:00 p.m. – Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree concert
The United States Air Force Honor Guard will perform several times a day July 2 through July 5.
- 11:30 a.m. – Paradise Park in Disney California Adventure (World of Color viewing area)
- 12:30 p.m. – Paradise Park in Disney California Adventure (World of Color viewing area)
- 1:30 p.m. – Paradise Park in Disney California Adventure (World of Color viewing area)
- 3:15 p.m. – Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland
- 4:05 p.m. – Disneyland parade route, before Mickey's Soundsational parade
- 6:45 p.m. – Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree concert in Disneyland (July 4th only)
The United States Air Force Band of the Golden West will also perform at the Main Stage in Downtown Disney July 5 and 6 at 6:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.
Parking is often a problem during the Independence Day holiday, and it is not uncommon for the Mickey and Friends parking structure to close during the morning rush, and open in the afternoon after the other parking lots have reached capacity. We suggest you first try the Toy Story lot south of Katella Avenue on Harbor Boulevard, which offers bus service to the Disneyland Resort and is generally easier to get into, especially for people arriving from south of the resort.
In past years, the Downtown Disney parking lot suspended the standard three-hour grace period and imposed a flat $15 up front for vehicles entering after 6:00 p.m., to discourage people from parking in Downtown Disney to watch the Disneyland fireworks for free from the esplanade between Disneyland and DCA. We have yet to hear whether the resort plans to do this again this year, but we expect a similar policy to apply. If you have to pay the fee, you should be able to get a refund with a table-service restaurant or AMC movie theater validation.
Disney theme parks ban selfie sticks
Just days after the California Screamin' roller coster at Disney California Adventure was halted mid-ride when a rider pulled out a “selfie stick,” the Walt Disney Company announced a ban on the devices (expanding monopods attached to cameras or smartphones for individuals to take self-portraits with) at all Disney-operated theme parks in the United States, France, and Hong Kong.
Starting this week, the ban on selfie sticks applies park wide at all Disney-operated theme parks. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
The ban goes into effect at Disneyland and Walt Disney World starting June 30, and at Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland starting July 1. The guest screening (bag check) process will be expanded to include selfie sticks. Guests found to have one will be given the option to return the device to their car or hotel room, or to check the device in at a designated location near the front entrance. At the Disneyland Resort, this will be at Lost & Found outside Disney California Adventure. Guests receive a claim tag, and can pick up their device after leaving the theme parks.
Guests found to be using a selfie stick inside the park will be escorted to Lost & Found to check their device, or given the option to return it to their car or hotel room.
The ban does not extend to Downtown Disney or the Resort Hotel areas, and does not change the existing policy regarding tripods (folding tripod stands that can fit inside a standard backpack are permitted.).
Disney says the ban is necessary because, despite signs posted at some attractions, and verbal instructions given at others, guests continue to use selfie sticks in an unsafe manner. “We strive to provide a great experience for the entire family, and unfortunately selfie sticks have become a growing safety concern for both our guests and cast,” said Disneyland Resort spokeswoman Suzi Brown, echoing a statement from Walt Disney World's public relations department.
Non-Disney retailers in Downtown Disney have already discontinued sales of selfie sticks.
Peter Pan's Flight reopens this week; passholder previews begin Monday
Peter Pan's Flight in Fantasyland officially reopens to the public this Wednesday, July 1, following a lengthy refurbishment that went over schedule. Disneyland Resort annual passholders can see the new ride effects starting Monday morning, thanks to a just-announced preview opportunity.
The preview is open Monday, June 29 and Tuesday, June 30 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. To ride, passholders must show their annual pass and (possibly) photo ID at the attraction entrance. Every member of the party must be a passholder to ride, so passholders cannot bring non-passholder friends and family with them.
Both preview days are blockout dates for Southern California and Southern California Select passholders, but Deluxe, Premium, and Premier passholders are eligible.
As always, Disney warns that there may be long lines and unscheduled ride closures during the preview period.
Disney puts $1 Billion expansion up against gate tax exemption
If anyone is going to make a day at Disneyland more expensive, it's going to be the Disney company, thank you very much. At least that's one way to read Disney's continued opposition to a tax on theme park tickets at the California resort. As the city of Anaheim considers whether to extend the current ticket tax exemption when it expires in 2016, Disney is hoping to bring council members around to their side of the issue by floating a potential $1 billion expansion of the Disneyland Resort.
The current exemption began in 1996, and was negotiated as part of the Disneyland Resort expansion that eventually saw the construction of Disney California Adventure, Downtown Disney, the Mickey and Friends parking lot, and Disney's Grand Californian Hotel.
The proposed 30-year exemption would be linked to another expansion of Disneyland and/or Disney California Adventure, although a Disney representative told MousePlanet that there are no firm plans yet on the table. As reported by the Orange County Register, a study commissioned by Disney from auditing company KPMG estimates that the proposed $1 billion expansion would mean 1,400 new jobs and an additional $15 million in annual tax revenue for the city of Anaheim.
Anaheim mayor Tom Tait supported the 1996 agreement, but told the Register that he opposes this new plan.
Disney lost the gate tax battle in Florida, where a 6.5 percent sales tax applies to theme park tickets.
Regardless of Disney's official position that the proposed expansion is tied directly to and contingent upon the extention of the ticket tax ban, it's hard to believe that the company would refuse to make any additions to the Disneyland Resort even if the tax is approved. Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that an expansion was in the works during the 2015 annual shareholder's meeting in March, and frankly, the company doesn't have much choice. With Universal Studios Hollywood set to open the Wizarding World of Harry Potter next year, Disney needs something to draw focus back to Anaheim.
Update: Disneyland Resort spokeswoman Suzi Brown responded to this story, noting that the Florida tax on admission tickets is part of that state's sales tax law, and not specifically aimed at theme parks. Ms. Brown also stated that while Disney would continue to update and refresh the Disneyland Resort if the tax exemption ended, that work would not be on the scale of the $1 Billion proposal currently under discussion.
The first public hearing on the matter takes place at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7 at the Anaheim City Council Chambers.

November penciled in for ComicbookLand
David Koening reports:
Disneyland is targeting a November completion for its makeover of the former Innoventions building, featuring Marvel exhibits on the upper floor and the Star Wars Universe on the lower floor.
More than 40 Entertainment cast members will be trained to work the location.
Plans for incorporating a 60th anniversary Disneyland historical exhibit apparently have been scrapped.

- D23 Expo – August 14–16 at the Anaheim Convention Center. Tickets available on the event website.

- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 15-16. Expect unusually large attendance levels October 16–20 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- 2015 Avengers Half Marathon Weekend – November 12–15. Most events are sold out, but space remains in the half marathon race. Details on the runDisney website.
2016
- 2016 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend – January 14–17. Registration opens June 16.
- 2016 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 5–8. Registration opens August 11.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 20–21.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 2015.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

One Day Park Hopper – Regularly $155/$149 |

CHOC has not yet announced the end date of the CHOC-tober promotion, but we will share details as soon as we know them. For this 25th Anniversary event, CHOC has raised the minimum fund-raising commitment. There is no charge to register for the walk, but walkers (ages 3 and up) must commit to raise $65 before the event. 2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132) |
A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |

Discounts for everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
