Miley Cyrus to celebrate Sweet 16 at Disneyland
TV show Entertainment Tonight reported last week that Disneyland is hosting the Sweet 16 birthday party for Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus. The ET Web site broke the news Friday morning, and has a video clip from Cyrus talking about some of the events planned for her party (link). “Miley’s Sweet 16 – Share The Celebration” is scheduled from 6:00 to 11:00 pm on Sunday, October 5. “Party Zones” will be established throughout the park, and a selection of the star’s favorite rides will be open. Cyrus will perform a few songs at her party, which will conclude with a special fireworks presentation.

Up to 5,000 fans of the teen star can attend the party. Tickets go on sale on August 30 at 9am PDT, but at $250 each, it will probably be out of reach for most budgets for her fans (parents, expect to turn over your credit card). Additional event details are available on a special event Web site (link). ET reports that the event will honor participants in the Youth Service America program, and Disney announced that the Parks division will make a “significant contribution” to Youth Service America.
The event adds to what already promises to be a very busy weekend at the Disneyland Resort. The resort will be in the second weekend of the HalloweenTime promotion, and Friday, October 3 is the first of the Mickey’s Trick-or-Treat parties at Disney’s California Adventure. Disneyland closes at 5:00 pm Sunday in preparation for the birthday party, and the Disneyland Web site now shows that the park will open at 6:30 a.m. Welcoming the displaced is Disney’s California Adventure, which will remain open until 11:00 p.m. This is similar to the park hours adjustments made when Disneyland hosted the premieres of the Pirates of the Caribbean films.
To add to the crowds, the 11th annual Gays Days are scheduled for Friday, Oct 3 – Sunday, October 5 at the Disneyland Resort. This unofficial event draws several thousand participants, with gatherings at Disneyland on Saturday and DCA on Sunday (link).
Cyrus’ Sweet 16 party will likely serve to kick off the Disneyland Resort’s as-yet-unnanounced “What Will You Celebrate” promotion that will carry the resort through 2009 and into the 55th Anniversary of Disneyland.
Summer comes to an end
The week leading into the Labor Day holiday is traditionally considered the final weekend of summer at the Disneyland Resort. After the Labor Day weekend crowds depart, the theme parks return to “off season” operating hours, and construction walls sprout up around the fall refurbishment projects.
Labor Day is the last chance to catch Fantasmic! and Disney’s Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular before the two shows go “dark” for refurbishment. Disneyland’s Indiana Jones Summer of Hidden Mysteries promotion ends September 1, and the final performance of Indiana Jones and the Secret of the Stone Tiger show is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.

French Market, Harbour Galley, Conestoga Fries and Burger Invasion are all scheduled to close for renovation starting September 2, as are the Haunted Mansion and Sailing Ship Columbia.
The Disneyland Resort will host the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend Friday, August 29 through Sunday, August 31, with the 2008 Disneyland Half Marathon on Sunday, August 31 (link). Disney’s California Adventure will open at 10:30 on Sunday due to the marathon; Disneyland will open at 9:00am, but Magic Morning may not be offered due to the race.
Halloween comes early
Disneyland’s HalloweenTime promotion does not officially begin until Friday, September 26, but the Disneyland Resort shops has already staged much of their Halloween merchandise. The World of Disney store has transformed the Mickey Mouse Club House and Treehouse props into a Halloween display complete with costumed characters. The store also offers the largest collection of Halloween costumes, and it is worth mentioning that the most popular costumes sell out very well before Halloween. If your selection is already sold out, you may be able to locate it at costume displays at the Showcase shop in Disneyland or Gone Hollywood in DCA.

Jack Skellington features prominently in this year’s collection, and cast members say that an orange “Jack”-o-Lantern candle holder and a new Jack Skellington ear hat have been popular. The annual Halloween antenna topper is a multi-eyed spider, and a giant Minnie witch hat is available at several shops.

Artist Dave Avanzino has created two Halloween-themed pieces for Disneyland. The “HalloweenTime at Disneyland” paper sculpture shows the Fab 5 posing in their Halloween costumes in front of the Haunted Mansion Holiday attraction. Avanzino says that each character is made from between eight to 18 individually hand-cut pieces, and the dimensional scene is surrounded by a custom printed mat. The piece is a limited edition of 10, and is available at Disneyland for $750.00.

The Disneyland HalloweenTime Icon Letters is a holiday version of Dave’s very popular shadowbox collection, and is an open edition piece that will be available this year and next at Disneyland. The piece retails for $75, and is currently in stock at the Disneyana shop on Main Street.
Disneyland Hotel unveils Character Quarters
The Disneyland Hotel is now accepting reservations for “Character Quarters,” specially decorated rooms designed for children. Disney says that Character Quarters are standard, smaller guest rooms that have a connecting door adjacent to a standard guest room. The rooms are available with a Mickey Mouse or Disney Princess theme, and have twin beds, television and separate bathroom.

Visitors can guarantee connecting rooms by booking a Character Quarters room along with a standard room, creating a 2-bedroom suite. The rooms cannot be booked without a connecting standard guest room.

…Thomas Kinkade will be at Disney’s California Adventure this morning (Monday, August 25) for the product release and signing of his new “Snow White Discovers the Cottage” painting (link). …Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort this fall should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates, as Disney is adjusting the refurbishment schedule as the new fiscal year budgets are finalized. This week’s changes include extensions to the conversions of the three former McDonald’s locations. The Flik’s Flyers refubishment previously scheduled for September is now off the calendar.
…We reported last week that the Disneyland Resort will release the Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas Collector’s Edition DVD at a product release and signing on Tuesday, August 26. The Resort had previously said that a gift-with-purchase would be offered with copies sold at the event, but that offering has now been removed from the event listing. Steve Davison, Brian D. Sandahl and Tim Wollweber will still be on hand to sign DVDs purchased Tuesday morning (link).

… The 50th Anniversary Platinum Edition of Sleeping Beauty will be released on Blu-ray Hi-Def and DVD October 7th. A digital restoration of the film will be screened at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood from August 29th through September 18th. An opening night panel discussion will be held at 7:00pm on Friday, Aug, 28. This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. Costco Travel Packages – Many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.com. When purchasing a Costco Disneyland travel package, extras that will be included are: Mickey’s Toontown Madness admission (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), a character breakfast per person, a $20 Disneyland Resort gift card, a collectible pin and lanyard, and a Costco luggage tag.

Other Discounts
Disney Visa Free-Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers for free at either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental locations at each park.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Membership in the Rainforest Cafe gets you a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. It also gets you priority seating if available, which can make a huge difference on busy days. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link)
AAA Restaurant Discounts – AAA (American Automobile Association) members can receive a 10% discount (excluding alcohol) at Plaza Inn, Wine Country Trattoria Ariel’s Grotto, PCH Grill, and Goofy’s Kitchen.
Downtown Disney Patina Restuarant Discounts – Three Downtown Disney restaurants operated by the Patina Group are currently offering lunch and/or dinner specials. Check at the restaurant for menu and price details.
