Give a Day, get a server error

Disney’s ambitious “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day” promotion kicked off last Friday, only to be fraught with numerous problems of various types. Many would-be volunteers reported that Disney’s computer system was not prepared to handle the thousands of people who logged on to find a volunteer opportunity in their area. Frustrated readers said that even if they could get onto the event Web page, they were not able to sign up for the event they selected. Several readers reported getting error messages when they tried to register on the site, and MousePad member quackinup said “It was fun watching my 3 choices dwindle from a total of 30 slots to 0 slots as I got frozen screens and error messages through the evening.” By midday, the event Web site was updated with a message apologizing for the server issues caused by the unexpected demand, and asking interested volunteers to check back later.

MousePlanet reader Mary Kraemer was trying to set up a volunteer opportunity for other readers in Northern California, but couldn’t get through the registration process on Friday. By the time she finally registered the next day, the event she selected was full and could not accommodate any additional MousePlanet volunteers.

Other readers have reported challenges with specific volunteer opportunities. MousePlanet Community Leader Drince88 found an interesting event in her area, an event which required advance coordination via e-mail with the event hosts, but was scheduled for the very next day. Community Leader bennette applied for what was billed as a two-hour shift as a “cat cuddler” with a local pet welfare group, but was informed that the organization was only accepting applicants who were willing to sign up for a long-term volunteer commitment.

It also turns out that the “Give a Day” part of the promotion is a misnomer. Many of the volunteer opportunities require a commitment of less than three hours, and a Florida blood bank is giving credit to donors who give blood at designated events.

For those who were concerned that they could not participate in physically demanding events like coastal clean-ups or house painting, you can sign up to be an after-school tutor or to help with crafts projects. Opportunities vary by area, and new listings are posted every day. Right now, the Web site only lists events that occur in the next 60 days, so check back as new events are added. We did a quick scan of Southern California events, and it looks like the majority of scheduled events (those with a specific date/time listed, as opposed to the “scheduling to be arranged” events) have filled to capacity. If you weren’t able to register for an event this weekend, check back in a few days as a new batch of events is added (link).

We’ve had several questions from readers about using and upgrading their ticket. Once you’ve completed your volunteer service and the host organization has verified your participation, you will need to log back onto the event Web site to print out a redemption certificate. You will exchange that certificate at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths to receive your one-day, one-park ticket. Just as with the “free on your birthday” promotion, guests age 18 and older will need to present a government ID to redeem their certificate, and guests under age 18 will need to present a copy of their birth certificate. The ticket is valid only on the date it is issued, so don’t redeem it before you’re ready to use it. You can upgrade this ticket to a parkhopper or multi-day parkhopper ticket or to an Annual Passport. You can also apply the value of the ticket towards the renewal of an annual passport, provided that you renew your AP before December 15, 2010.

The holidays are history, but the crowds remain

The holiday season has officially ended at the Disneyland Resort, but the crowds aren’t quite ready to leave. Many local school districts are closed for one more week, which means school-break crowds through January 10th. The BCS National Championship Game will be held January 7th at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, which will mean even more visitors to the Resort as visiting football fans look for something to do in the days before the game.

Some weekends in January and February don’t look much better for crowds. The International Music Products Association (NAMM) convention in in town January 8-19, bringing an estimated 89,000 attendees (plus their families) to the Anaheim Resort for one of the largest conventions of the year. The NFFC–Disneyana Fan Club Show and Sale is January 17, so expect an extra dose of Disney fans in the area that weekend. The Disneyland Resort is seemingly expecting a double-dose of President’s Day crowds, and has extended park hours February 5 to 8 and 12 to 15. Some schools observe Lincoln’s birthday and Washington’s birthday as two separate, three-day weekends; other schools celebrate President’s Day with a single four-day weekend.

New Year, New Prices, New Promotions

This is the week when Disneyland frequently raises some admission prices, and launches the winter/spring Resident Salute offer. We did not have details of these new prices and promotions at press time, but we expect an announcement this week and will post the updated information in this article when we have it.

It’s 2Fer Time

Disneyland launched the 2010 “2Fer” offer this morning, and also quietly raised the prices of all levels of Disneyland Annual Passports.

The Spring 2010 2Fer ticket offers Southern California / Northern Baja California residents* admission to either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to the other park on another day within 30 days of the first visit. Ticket ticket is $72.00 for adults (ages 10 and older) and $62.00 for children (ages 3-9) The first use must occur by April 12, 2010.

The 2fer ticket can be purchased online at Disneyland.com/2fer, and printed from home for immediate use. You can also purchase the ticket at participating Disney Stores; Vons, Pavilions, Albertsons, Ralphs, Stater Bros, Gelson’s or Food 4 Less grocery stores; Toys R Us; Dearden’s; Korea Daily; the Disney Desk at the Irvine Spectrum and other participating locations.

As with past promotions, the 2Fer ticket can be upgraded during or prior to the second use to a multi-day park hopper ticket, or to an Annual Passport. If you prefer to visit both parks on both visits, you can also purchase the Southern California 2-Day Park Hopper Ticket for $97.00 (adults) or $87.00 (children 3-9).

Tickets valid for Southern California residents within ZIP Codes 90000–93599 and Northern Baja California residents within ZIP Codes 21000–22999. Proof of residency required for admission. Admission valid for one day at Disneyland® Park, and another day at Disney’s California Adventure® Park, but not for both Parks on the same day. Tickets are valid 30 days from first use. Annual Passport price increase

The Disneyland Resort also raised the price of all four levels of Annual Passport $10-25 effective this morning. The new rates are as follows:

Premium Annual Passport: $439 ($10 increase)
Deluxe Annual Passport: $299 ($10 increase)
Southern California Annual Passport: $219 ($25 increase)
SoCal Select Annual Passport: $169 ($25 increase)

2010 City Pass

The 2010 Southern California CityPass ($269/$229) includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by January 3, 2011. Purchase CityPass through the Disneyland Web site (link) or onsite at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPass Web site (link) though this has a minimum $7.50 shipping charge (no shipping charge from the Disney Web site if purchased more than 10 days in advance). You can also purchase the Southern California City Pass online from Costco at a cost of $279/$239 (link), but note that the Costco price is $10 higher than the published price.

…Honey, I Shrunk the Audience closes today so that Captain EO can return to the Magic Eye Theater. Disneyland has still not given a specific opening date for EO, but it’s likely to return before President’s Day Weekend.

…The Disneyland Resort has extended the Annual Passholder appreciation discount through February 2, 2010. All Passholders receive a 10% discount on qualifying merchandise; Premium Annual Passholders receive a 20% discount.

…A new Annual Passport processing center opened this weekend in DCA’s Studio 12, the former Hollywood and Dine food court. The center in Disneyland’s Plaza Pavilion is still open.

…Disney’s California Food and Wine Festival will be hosted daily, April 16 to May 31. The scheduled of signature and complimentary events has not yet been released.

…According to a cast member publication, the refurbishment scheduled for the Tomorrowland Terrace has been rescheduled, and the restaurant will now be closed January 25 through July 2. No word on if or where the Jedi Training Academy will be presented during the refurbishment. The Disneyland Web site does not currently list this closure

…Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. • Redwood Creek Challenge Trail – closed January 11 to February 19 for refurbishment.
• Francis’ Lady Bug Boogie – closed January 25 to February 4 for refurbishment.
• Golden Zephyr – closed February 10 to April 2 for refurbishment.

Construction-related closures:

• The Vineyard Room – closed. No announcement has been made about a potential replacement for this restaurant, though work to expand the venue will reportedly begin shortly.
• Golden Dreams – closed. The building that once house this film-based attraction has been demolished, and will eventually be replaced with the new Little Mermaid ride.
• Burger Invasion – closed. No announcement has been made about a potential replacement for this former McDonald’s location, but an employee publication lists May 24, 2011 as the return date.
• Paradise Pier Lagoon – work continues on the World of Color installation.
• Golden State Amphitheater – area closed for construction of new viewing area for Disney’s World of Color water show. The area is now scheduled to reopen in Spring 2010.
• Corn Dog Castle – closed due to construction in the area. An employee publication lists March 24, 2011 as its return date. During the renovation, corn dogs are available at Bountiful Valley Farmer’s Market.
• Souvenir 66 – closed due to construction in the area. An employee publication lists March 24, 2011 as its return date, and “Seaside Souvenirs” as the new name of the store.
• Orange Stinger – closed through April 28, 2010 for refurbishment and renovation into the Silly Symphonies Swings.

Expect unusually large attendance levels October 14-17 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school’s participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $229/$199	Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($159.95) &endash; A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California (link). Unlike some recent offers, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have almost a full year to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires on August 23, 2010. The ticket is blocked out the week between Christmas and New Years (inclusive of both holidays), and for the week of March 26 to April 4, which gives you an idea of what Disneyland expects to be the peak Spring Break period. The ticket is not blocked out on any other holidays – including Labor Day, Thanksgiving or even the 4th of July – and can be upgraded to any Annual Passport except the SoCal Select pass. The Costco Web site states in three different places—including a bold, bright red headline—that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We’ve been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (ie, you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. If you do buy at Costco, you will initially purchase a large plastic container that you must trade for ticket books prior to leaving Costco!

Hotel/Travel Packages

Save $400 on a 4-Day/4-Night Disneyland Resort vacation package. The offer is valid for arrivals August 23 through December 20, 2009, and starts at $87 per person, per day with accommodations at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel and a four-day park hopper ticket. The offer is not valid November 25–27, 2009. Annual passholders can book the same package—without the ticket requirement—through Costco travel or directly through the Walt Disney Travel Company, though the Costco version of the offer also includes the perks listed below.

Alaska Airlines Kids Fly Free – Alaska Airlines is repeating the popular “Kids Fly Free” promotion for travel to the Disneyland Resort. If you book an Alaska Airlines Southern California Vacations package for travel between January 5 and April 30, 2010, one child (age 2-11) can fly free with each paid adult (18 and older) ticket. Character Dining Vouchers – Discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through MousePlanet sponsor Get Away Travel (link).

Disney Visa Discounted Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers at a discount of 50% at either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental locations at each park.

Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).

AAA Restaurant Discounts – AAA (American Automobile Association) members can receive a 10% discount (excluding alcohol) at Plaza Inn, Wine Country Trattoria Ariel’s Grotto, PCH Grill, and Goofy’s Kitchen.
