Hotel workers prepare for hunger strike | Food & Wine Festival discounts and pre-sale for Passholders | Save the Date: MouseAdventure Anniversary Event | DCA construction update | This and That

Hotel workers prepare for hunger strike

Ten demonstrators will participate in a hunger strike at the Disneyland Resort beginning Tuesday evening, the latest in a series of protests organized by Unite HERE Local 11, the union representing workers at the three Disneyland Resort hotels. According to a union press release, the group of protestors—including eight hotel cast members, the adult son of a cast member and two food service employees from Los Angeles International Airport who also belong to Local 11—will sleep in tents outside Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel, surrounded by a “large shrine to injured workers.” The demonstrators will consume only water during this protest. Local 11 did not respond to repeated requests for comment about this protest, and the published statements do not indicate how many days the hunger strike is expected to last.

Asked about the protest, Disneyland Resort spokesperson Suzi Brown issued a prepared statement:

We issued a letter to Local 11 on January 29, once again asking them to agree to meet with an independent federal mediator to help us come to an agreement. (Release attached.) To date we have not received a response.

This is just another tactic from Local 11 leadership to distract from the fact that after two years their members are still without a contract. This calls into question their commitment to meeting with an independent federal mediator in the hopes of making progress on our negotiations.

It also concerns to us that they would jeopardize the health and safety of their members in this manner.

The union’s protest announcement comes just days after the Disneyland Resort renewed their call for Local 11 to meet with a independent federal mediator to resolve the two-year-old labor dispute. Food service, restaurant, housekeeping and bell services workers at the three Disneyland Resort hotels have been working without a contract since early 2008, and the dispute has been marked by a series of protests and demonstrations by the union, most notably a protest in August 2008 that resulted in the arrest of 30 people who blocked an intersection outside of the Disneyland Resort (read our coverage of that event). The main sticking point continues to be healthcare. Under the terms of the expired contract, most Local 11 members who worked an average of just under 18 hours per week received “free” health insurance, paid for by Disney through contributions to the union’s insurance trust fund. Local 11 members are the only Disney cast members who have a separate health plan. Under Disney’s proposed agreement, all cast members would transition to the same Disney’s Signature Health Care plan that covers all other eligible Disneyland Resort cast members.

Disney’s proposal offers cast members free coverage for the remainder of 2010. Starting in 2011, cast members will begin paying about 25% of of the weekly premium for the Disney Signature plan, and by 2013 will be paying the same weekly premium as other covered cast members. Disney’s contract offer also provides for annual raises for non-tipped employees; retroactive raises for cast members who were hired in at the lower tier of the former two-tier pay structure and increases in some “additional pay” categories including training shifts, 3rd shifts and split-shifts. Disney’s proposal would also restore the sick pay benefit to covered employees, a benefit Local 11 suspended in June citing a lack of funding from Disney to pay sick leave.

Local 11 members voted overwhelmingly to reject Disney’s “last, best and final” offer last summer, and the union has reportedly declined to meet with Disney negotiators since. In December, Disney hotel workers staged a pair of “walkouts” to protest what they claim are unreasonable workloads and unsafe working conditions in the newly remodeled rooms at the Grand Californian Hotel. According to a union press release, “Longer sheets, thicker mattresses, duvet covers, bigger pillows, and longer pillowcases have created more work for housekeepers to complete in the same amount of time.”

The Disneyland Resort is offering annual passholders a discount on select Signature Events for the 2010 Food & Wine Festival, and opened registration for these three events last Thursday. DCA construction update

A quick update this week—we’ll have a more extensive photo update next week, for those who just can’t get their fill of bulldozers and dirt lots. There is little visible progress in Hollywood, though it seems that new directional signs appear on the massive construction wall several times a week. The April refurbishment schedule has been updated, and the temporary connector path between Bug’s Land and the Tower of Terror will be closed April 19 through August 15 to allow construction of a more permanent route between the two lands. During this period, Fastpass service for the Tower of Terror will not be offered.

The Silly Symphony Swings have been installed and the refurbished attraction is currently undergoing testing with water dummies. The ride is scheduled to reopen in late April, and it looks like there is a lot of work left to do around the foundation.

Workers, including at least two teams of divers, are busy in and around the World of Color platform, but it does not appear that the platform has yet been submerged for testing. A wooden “boardwalk” surface was applied to the lower ramp of the World of Color viewing area this week.

This and That

…It looks like Disney’s Electrical Parade is returning for the Spring Break season a little earlier than expected. The Disneyland.com entertainment schedule shows an 8:45 performance of the parade on March 19. The schedule had not been updated beyond March 19 as of this writing, so it’s unknown how long the parade will stick around.

…A new atmosphere show called Tiana’s Mardi Gras Celebration has debuted in New Orleans Square. Princess Tiana, the Jambalaya Jazz band and several dancers parade from the Court of Angels to the upper terrace in front of French Market, where they stop to perform several songs from The Princess and the Frog. The show is performed several times each day, check the printed entertainment schedule when you arrive for that day’s showtimes. The show is weather-sensitive, so don’t expect performances on rainy days. Tiana’s Mardi Gras Celebration is scheduled to perform through Labor Day, Sept. 6.

…If you don’t follow the official Disneyland Twitter account (@Disneyland), you missed out on last week’s SoCal 2fer Sweepstakes. The Resort’s first Twitter contest offered US residents the chance to win a ticket to the Disneyland Resort. Winning Southern California residents will receive a SoCal 2fer tickets, all other winners will receive a one-day, one-park ticket valid anytime through April 12, 2010.

…The Disneyland Resort shops are transitioning to a new point of sale and inventory control system, and cast members are already unhappy about a proposed change to stock procedures. Under the new system, each store is “allocated” a certain quantity of inventory to replenish items sold the prior day. Each morning, the computer is supposed to tell the cast member how many units to restock to maintain optimum sales levels based on recent sales trends. The problem is, once the stores are restocked for the day, cast members are no longer to bring out additional stock to meet customer requests. If you’ve shopped at the Resort recently, your cashier probably asked if you found everything you were looking for as they totaled your purchases. If you said “no,” the cashier should have asked what you were looking for, and, if appropriate, offered to call the stockroom to located that item for you. Under the new program, you’ll still be asked if you found everything you wanted, but the cast member is directed to try and find a substitute from the inventory already on display. The program is supposed to reduce labor costs by making the restocking process faster and more automated, but for customers, it may mean you’ll have to come back tomorrow to buy today’s hot item.

…Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. This week’s changes include new refurbishment dates for the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail, Disneyland Monorail, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and more. Be sure to check the most recent Park Update (link) for the latest changes, as MousePlanet does not edit past Park Updates to reflect changes.

The Year to Volunteer

To assist MousePlanet readers who want to participate in The Year to Volunteer, we’re looking for readers to act as MousePlanet hosts at qualifying volunteer opportunities across the country. To help facilitate these activities, we’ve created a new MousePlanet Volunteers section of our MousePad discussion board devoted entirely to the Year to Volunteer events.

If you would like to coordinate and host a group volunteer event in your area, please visit our MousePad discussion board for more information on how to list your event (link). Hosts will be responsible for selecting a volunteer opportunity from the HandsOn Network site (which means you get to choose a program or organization that’s important to you!), and coordinating with local MousePlanet readers who want to volunteer for your activity. To give readers the most time to use their tickets, we encourage hosts to schedule their activities early in the year.

Hosts from across the country have already started discussions for their area, and are looking for local readers to join their activities. If you live in one of these areas and want more information about local events, please visit MousePad and join the discussion (link).

Current Discounts & Promotions

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line (link).

These tickets are now valid through January 3, 2011.

Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($159.95) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California (link). Unlike some recent offers, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have almost a full year to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires on August 23, 2010. The ticket is blocked out the week between Christmas and New Years (inclusive of both holidays), and for the week of March 26 to April 4, which gives you an idea of what Disneyland expects to be the peak Spring Break period. The ticket is not blocked out on any other holidays – including Labor Day, Thanksgiving or even the 4th of July – and can be upgraded to any Annual Passport except the SoCal Select pass.

The Costco Web site states in three different places—including a bold, bright red headline—that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We’ve been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (ie, you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney’s information is correct.
