Refurbishment season comes to the Disneyland Resort
The fall refurbishment season has come to the Disneyland Resort, and the summer crowds have been replaced with stands of construction walls.

A collection of projects in New Orleans Square means that everything from the French Market to the Haunted Mansion is behind construction walls, and the New Orleans Square train station is out of service. Though earlier reports indicated that the “it’s a small world” flume would be refilled starting August 20, but as of this weekend the flume was dry.

Disney’s California Adventure
The Hyperion Theater closed for renovations last week, and the Golden Dreams theater closed for good Sunday. The Sun Wheel closes Thursday for a long refurbishment project, during which the new Mickey Mouse face is expected to be installed.

Disneyland College Program Now Casting

Students who want to participate in the 2009 Spring Program session of the Disneyland Resort College Program can now apply. To apply, you must:
- Be currently enrolled as a full-time or part-time student in a college or university within the United States and have completed at least one semester.
- Meet your school’s requirements for participation (G.P.A., grade level, credit hours earned, etc.). This varies by school, so please check with a faculty member to see if you are eligible to participate in the program.
- Be at least 18 years old by the time the program begins.
- Have unrestricted work authorization in the United States.
The E-Presentation is available online 24/7 to students who are not able to attend a live presentation on campus due to distance, scheduling conflict, or who wish to start the application process immediately (link). Go to the site and click Disneyland.
Halloween Time Tour Returns to Disneyland

I just got the scoop on the new Halloween-themed tour being offered September 26 through October 31 at the Disneyland Resort. The tour:
- Operates twice daily at 5:15 and 5:30 p.m. for up to 20 people per tour, unlike last year when it was only run during the week
- Lasts three hours and includes rides on Snow White’s Scary Adventures, which is new for this year, as well as the Tower of Terror, Haunted Mansion Holiday, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
- Includes a souvenir and a Halloween treat for each guest.
- Costs $59 per person ($47.50 with the AP discount) and does not include park admission.
- Can be booked up to 30 days in advance by calling (714) 481-4400
On a personal note, this tour was really fun last year—more light than fright—and we had an amazing “ghost host.”
What’s Next for the Skyway Chalet

My last article, “Broken Bridges,” unveiling Team Disney Anaheim’s plans to prostitute one of the sweetest, most intimate corners in all of Disneyland, New Orleans Square’s Court of Angels, by turning it into an extension of the adjacent Christmas shop, has sparked a firestorm in the online community.
The uproar evidently wasn’t loud enough to dissuade management. “Your article exposing TDA’s plans has really ticked off the suits, as well as guests,” a cast member wrote. The overlay remains on track for October, even if it lasts only for the holidays.
But there’s another charming, out-of-the-way spot, visibly unchanged since 1956, that park watchers would love to see given new life: the old Fantasyland Skyway station. The winding paths leading to and from the beautiful chalet have been roped off since the aerial tram ride was closed 14 years ago. That hasn’t stopped fans from dreaming that one day the building will be humming again, if not with aerial tramways, at least with some new attraction or meet-and-greet. Whenever someone spots a faint light peeking out of the hill-top chalet, rumors begin flying that Disney is finally ready to revive this under-utilized real estate.
So it was with great excitement that guests noticed the construction walls go up around the site earlier this week. Whatever was going on behind the fences appeared to be more substantial than the standard repaving now underway in parts of Tomorrowland and New Orleans Square. Alas, it’s just underground repair work. Workmen had to dig up the pavement to repair the electrical lines running to the ODV lemonade stand, which stood between the entrance and exit stairways.

Let’s just hope that Disney decides in the near future to at least maintain the venerable structure, before it’s too late—and it meets the same fate as the fort on Tom Sawyer Island. “The building is slowly dying,” said one insider. “If left unused and neglected, it will reach the point that it will have to torn down. That would be a pity. Because it is really a very pretty building. Made entirely of wood, the intricate carvings on the outside made it a joy to look at in its heyday. The building is in usable condition, but I am afraid that by the time something is put there, it will be so forlorn that there will be no choice but to tear it down.”
(To their credit, Facilities has maintained the old PeopleMover track and pylons sufficiently over the years, in hopes that they can one day be reused.)
Currently, the insider said, “Imagineers I have talked to have nothing on the drawing boards for [the Skyway station]. One of the biggest stumbling blocks is the flight of stairs to get to the chalet. You know, that thing called ADA, and there is very little room behind it to expand.”

…Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort this fall should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates, as Disney is adjusting the refurbishment schedule as the new fiscal year budgets are finalized. Disney released the December refurbishment schedule after last week’s Update went to press. The Mark Twain refurbishment is now November 3-5, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will be closed December 1-5, and the Harbor Galley is now scheduled to reopen on December 16th. Disney’s Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular will reopen on December 12 at DCA. Be sure to check the most recent Park Update for the latest changes, as MousePlanet does not edit past Park Updates to reflect changes.
…Disney announced after the 2008 Disneyland Half Marathon ended that registration for the 2009 race would open on Monday, September 1, 2008, but several MousePlanet readers wrote to alert us that they could not find the registration link on the event Web site. A Disneyland Resort spokesperson told MousePlanet that the the original statement was incorrect, and said “the link for registration won’t be operating until later this month.” We will post registration details as soon as they are available at the event Web site (link).

Other Discounts
Disney Visa Free-Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers for free at either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental locations at each park.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Membership in the Rainforest Cafe gets you a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. It also gets you priority seating if available, which can make a huge difference on busy days. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link)
AAA Restaurant Discounts – AAA (American Automobile Association) members can receive a 10% discount (excluding alcohol) at Plaza Inn, Wine Country Trattoria Ariel’s Grotto, PCH Grill, and Goofy’s Kitchen.
Downtown Disney Patina Restuarant Discounts – Three Downtown Disney restaurants operated by the Patina Group are currently offering lunch and/or dinner specials. Check at the restaurant for menu and price details.
