Another word on World of Color

As we reported last week, Disney is still keeping mum about next month’s World of Color premiere, frustrating day guests and annual passholders alike who are trying to make plans see the new show in its opening days and weeks. Though the June 11 debut date is now official and Disney issued media invitations for a June 10 press event last week (quashing rumors that the show has been delayed), little details such as how to get a seat or what time to show up are yet to be released.

Shortly after last week’s Update was published, a MousePlanet reader (whose name we were asked to withhold from publication) sent us a little more information about the possible implementation of the Showpass concept we discussed in that article:

“The pass would be available at park opening, from the machines near Grizzly River Rapids. There will be four colored areas of viewing and four Showpass machines, one to match each color. People will be warned that if they want their family to be together in one area, then they all need to get the same color pass. Once these passes are gone for the first show, that’s it for Showpass. Viewers for the second and third show will be corralled out near the entrance to the park on a first-come first-served basis. So if you don’t want to get up early and get your Showpass, you’ll still have the opportunity to line up and see either the second or third show. Time will tell, of course, how early you’ll have to line up to get into either one of these shows.”

Also after the Update was published, Disney changed the park hours for Disney’s California Adventure once again. According to the latest schedule posted to the Disneyland.com site, DCA now closes at 10:00 on most nights starting June 11, instead of the 11:00 closing that was listed as recently as last Monday. We’re now hearing that World of Color has been cut back to just two shows per night. Based on sunset times and the posted schedules of Fantasmic and the Disneyland fireworks, we believe the first World of Color show will likely start around 8:30, with the second show starting at or just before DCA closes for the night (MousePlanet reader cstephens notes that the countdown clock posting inside the Blue Sky Cellar indicates that the first World of Color show will be at 9 p.m.).

[Update: a reader tells us that World of Color shows are currently planned for 9pm and 10:15pm each night, with the second show starting 15 minutes after Disney’s California Adventure closes for the evening.]

While Disney is tweaking the park operations schedule, fans are still clamoring for information about premium viewing packages for the show. We’re now inside the 30-day window that Disney has established for making premium viewing reservations, but Disney Dine Line cast members and the premium viewing reservations cast members still have no firm details to share. A cast member in the reservation office told MousePlanet reader dismom that the packages would be booked online once they’re finally announced, but all mention of the dining packages was removed from the official Disneyland site last week, which leads us to speculate that the packages may not be announced or offered until the show actual debuts.

For those trying to make plans to see the show in its opening days,  the cast member blockout dates offers a hint of which days Disney expects to be exceptionally crowded after World of Color opens. For Disneyland Resort cast members Monday, June 14, Tuesday, June 15, Monday, June 21 and Tuesday, June 22 are blockout dates for their pass, meaning they can not sign in friends and family on those dates. This is probably due to the Summer blockout schedule for the SoCal and SoCal Select Disneyland Resort Annual Passports. Based on the Annual Passport Blockout calendar, Premium and Deluxe passholders can see World of Color on opening night, Premium passholders can see it on June 12, Premium, and Deluxe and SoCal passholders on June 13. It’s not until June 14, however, that SoCal Select passholders can see it for the first time. Further, SoCal Select passholders only have four dates—June 14, 15, 21, and 22—to see World of Color before their passes are blocked out through Monday, August 23. SoCal passholders have a few additional days—June 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, and 22, and June 27 through July 2—to see the show before they are blocked out until Sunday, August 22.

Star Tours prepares for last flight to Endor

We broke the news last Wednesday that Disneyland’s Star Tours is closing on Monday, July 26 for the “reimagining” that was first announced by Disney at last year’s D23 Expo. The next day, Disney officially confirmed this date in a Disney Parks Blog post (link), where the date for the closure of the Walt Disney World version—Thursday, September 8—was also announced. While WDW is hosting a “Last Flight to Endor” party as part of the “Star Wars Celebration V” event in Orlando, Disneyland has announced no plans for a similar event in California. Our source tells us that the ride is scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, May 10, 2011. As with any project of this nature, expect the end date to slip a few days in either direction.

Tomorrowland security incident and social media

Perhaps you’ve encountered this scene at Disneyland sometime in the past few years: Someone reports a suspicious package, someone sets a bag down and forgets about it, or someone leaves stroller unattended for a long period of time. While Disney security checks out the parcel (often with the help of the park’s resident K-9 unit) other cast members surround the site and politely divert guests around the area. Although this is a fairly routine situation at Disneyland, when a soft-sided cooler found outside Captain EO Wednesday afternoon, it prompted the full evacuation of Tomorrowland for over an hour, and provided Disney with a case study in social media.

The closure itself was first mentioned on Twitter by user @dbeckner at 4:25 p.m., and was followed by hundreds of Tweets from people in the park who reported being evacuated from or denied entrance to the land. A visitor who was in Tomorrowland at the time of the evacuation told MousePlanet that cast members were very firm in clearing people from the area, yelling, “Everybody out!” Visitors were given various excuses for the evacuation, the most common being power failure. Several people reported seeing what they thought were bomb-sniffing dogs in Tomorrowland. Once the area was cleared of guests, rows of cast members blocked every entrance to Tomorrowland. The closure also impacted the Disneyland Railroad, though the Fantasyland side of the Matterhorn attraction remained in operation.

At 4:59, more than 30 minutes after the evacuation began, the official @Disneyland Twitter account posted, “News Update: Unattended bag discovered in Tomorrowland. The area has been cleared, and we are working with Anaheim PD.” Though Disneyland took the unusual step of admitting online what was going on as the incident unfolded, cast members and managers in the park continued to tell visitors that the closure was due to a power outage, or simply stated that they didn’t know.

At 5:42, the official Disneyland Twitter account posted that the Resort was operating as normal—an announcement that came as a surprise to those who were still waiting for Tomorrowland to reopen. In fact, it was another 10 minutes before visitors were allowed back into Tomorrowland, and even then most rides and attractions had not yet reopened. As some visitors lined up outside Space Mountain, Star Tours, and Finding Nemo, others searched Tomorrowland for the strollers they’d been forced to leave behind when the evacuation started.

While it is completely understandable that Disney would not want to risk panicking park visitors by announcing the discovery of a suspicious package or that bomb-sniffing dogs were called in, it’s probably better to provide a consistent message than to have in-park managers passing along information that conflicted with official corporate statements posted on the Internet. Cast members working during the evacuation were surprised to later learn that Disney had made any public statement during the incident, saying that normal policy is not to discuss an incident until after it is resolved.

Toy Story delayed; Aladdin extended

Last December, Disney announced that Disney Cruise Line’s Toy Story – The Musical would come to the Hyperion Theater in Disney’s California Adventure in early 2011, replacing the long-running Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular. Based on comments made to the official Disney Parks Blog (link), this announcement was not well-received, with many people asking if DCA really needed to replace the very popular Aladdin show with yet another Pixar-based offering. Now Disney has reversed its decision, announcing last week in its blog (link) that “Buzz, Woody and their pals will stay focused on the new additions in Toy Story Mania…for now,” and, “by popular demand, “Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular” will remain at Disney’s California Adventure park.”

We’ll probably never know for sure if the delay (assuming that the Toy Story idea hasn’t been canceled entirely) is really due to “popular demand,” or because of problems reworking a Disney Cruise Line production to play in the Broadway-quality Hyperion Theater, or if the poor reviews of the cruise line version of the show made Disneyland’s entertainment department think twice about bringing the production to California.

Grad Nights begin

The 2010 Grad Night season begins this week, with the first event scheduled for Thursday night. Disneyland will open one hour later than usual on Friday due to the event. The after-hours parties for high school seniors do not have much of an impact on the theme parks, but it is worth noting that middle school groups also visit the resort at this time of year to celebrate their own commencements.

DCA construction update

As DCA readies for the debut of World of Color and the return of the Silly Symphony Swings, work continues on the Little Mermaid and Cars Land attractions. These photos were taken on Thursday, and significant progress has happened since then, with most of the tarps around the Silly Symphony Swings coming down Friday.

On Thursday the World of Color show techs lowered one section of the show platform from “maintenance” to “show,” and then to “hidden” level, offering a glimpse of what Paradise Bay might look like once the World of Color stage is hidden underwater during the day between shows. All of the projector towers were open and most of the lighting towers were raised from their storage crates, offering an up-close look at more of the show’s technology.

Disneyland Cast Members reportedly got to see and practice getting into and out of the ride vehicle for Luigi’s Flying Tires last week when the prototype ride vehicle was put on display outside the Team Disney Anahaim building. Sadly, no cameras, cell phones or other recording devices were allowed, so we haven’t yet seen a photo of the vehicle. Over in DCA, the test vehicle for the Radiator Springs Racers attraction was spotted sitting under a canopy over the attraction’s track.

This and That

…Disneyland has released the 55th Anniversary Limited Edition Mickey Mouse Club Ear Hat, first announced in January (link). According to Disney, the hat “replicates the shape, logo and fabrication of the original Mickey Mouse Club ear hat that was featured on the show in 1955.” The hat is packaged in a collectible hat box, and retails for $89.95 plus tax. Though Disney stated on its official Facebook page Thursday that “all 1,955 limited edition Mickey Mouse Ear Hats created for the 55th Anniversary hit shelves at the Disneyland Resort,” most stores only received a small shipment and were sold out by Thursday night. On Friday, the Disney Showcase shop received a small shipment, but the World of Disney store—mentioned in the Blog post as one of the locations that carried the hat—received none at all. If the stores are sold out when you visit, ask them to check with another location, or call Disney’s merchandise guest services number (800-362-4533) to order by phone (shipping fees apply). MousePlanet reader disneyfn said that a pair was located at the Mad Hatter store in Fantasyland on Saturday. disneyfn said, “One note: You won’t see the ears on display anywhere so you will have to ask a CM to check for you.” This was definitely true at the Showcase Shop, where the hats were kept in a cubbyhole behind the cash registers.

…Jamba Juice has reopened in Downtown Disney, following a month-long refurbishment.

…Five collections from the previously park-exclusive Dooney & Bourke co-branded line of handbags and accessories are now available online from DisneyParks.com (link). The Disney Cruise Line collection remains exclusive to the Disney Magic and Wonder.

…The Spring/Summer 2010 issue of the Backstage Pass magazine for Disneyland Resort annual passholders started arriving in homes last week, though the Disneyland AP Web site has not yet been updated with the new issue. MousePlanet reader olegc noted that he received his copy, which contains an article about the replacement of the Aladdin show with the Toy Story – the Musical, on the very day that Disney announced that Aladdin would not be ending, and wonders if it isn’t time for Disney to retire the quickly-outdated print magazine.

…The refurbishment of the Mark Twain has been extended until Thursday, May 20. The Sailing Ship Columbia is now making nighttime voyages around the Rivers of America, which is an unusual treat for Disneyland guests offered only when Fantasmic is in hiatus.

…Registration for the May 22-23 MouseAdventure Anniversary event is now closed, and we can’t wait to see all of the teams this weekend!   World of Color Media Preview – Thursday, June 10. DCA’s new water-and-light show debuts to a group of invited media and celebrities. DCA closes at 5pm this night due to the media event and a previously-scheduled Grad Night event.
• World of Color Premiere – Friday, June 11. DCA’s new water-and-light show debuts to the public.
• Summer Nightastic! at the Disneyland Resort – Daily, June 11 through Aug. 29. The summer promotion includes Fantasmic and the “Magical” fireworks show in Disneyland, plus the new World of Color show.

• 4th Annual Not Back to School Days Rally and Conference (unofficial event) – September 8–11. Event includes education and social opportunities for home educators (link).
• 13th annual Gays Days at the Disneyland Resort (unofficial event) – October 1–3, 2010. Event attendance will be higher at Disneyland on Saturday, DCA on Sunday (link).
• Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 14–15, 2009. (Link). Expect unusually large attendance levels October 14-17 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school’s participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.

2011

• D23 Expo – August 19-21, 2011 at the Anaheim Convention Center (link). Tickets for the D23 Expo 2011 will go on sale August 19, 2010.

Current Discounts & Promotions

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

One Day, One Park Ticket – Regularly $72/$62 One Day Park Hopper – Regularly $97/$87	No discounts currently available to the general public. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them.
Two Day Park Hopper – Regularly $151/$131	AOCVCB 2-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($149/$129) – The discount (from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau) is $2 off the box-office price for both adults and children. You can now print these tickets at home, though a $1 per-ticket convenience fee applies. If the $1 per ticket net savings isn’t enough of an incentive to pre-purchase your tickets, think of all the time you’ll save by not having to stand in line at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths (link). These tickets are now valid through January 3, 2011.
Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $204/$174	Advance Purchase 3-day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($184/$154) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. Available at the Disneyland Web site (link) where shipping is included if you order more than 10 days prior to your travel date. Also available from AAA offices in Northern California, Nevada, and Utah (not currently listed at the AAA Web site, you may need to call your local office). Disney Stores (California), Safeway supermarkets (California and Arizona), and certain travel agents may also sell these tickets. It is best to call and confirm before visiting a location, however. “Bonus Tickets” include one early admission day (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). If purchased from AAA, the tickets come with free parking at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (an $11/day value) AOCVCB 3-Day Bonus Ticket ($179/$149) – The discount (from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau) is $5 off the advance purchase price for both adults and children. You can now print these tickets at home, though a $1 per-ticket convenience fee applies. Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $229/$199	Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($159.95) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California (link). Unlike some recent offers, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until August 23, 2010 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket has no further blockout days in 2010, and can be upgraded to any Annual Passport except the SoCal Select pass. The Costco Web site states in three different places—including a bold, bright red headline—that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We’ve been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (ie, you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. Advance Purchase 4-Day Park Hopper Bonus tickets ($199/$169) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. Available at the Disneyland Web site (link) where shipping is included if you order more than 10 days prior to your travel date. Also available from AAA offices in Northern California, Nevada, and Utah (not currently listed at the AAA Web site, you may need to call your local office). 2010 Southern California CityPass $269/$229	2010 Southern California CityPass ($269/$229)– This pass includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by January 3, 2011. Purchase CityPass through the Disneyland Web site (link) or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPass Web site (link) though this has a minimum $7.50 shipping charge (no shipping charge from the Disney Web site if purchased more than 10 days in advance). You can also purchase the Southern California City Pass online from Costco at a cost of $239.99/$204.99 (link), which includes free UPS shipping. A 5% surcharge for non-members, and shipping fees to members in Alaska and Hawaii may also apply to your purchase. Booklets may be available for sale in some stores but varies widely. If you want to buy in person it would be best to call ahead and confirm availability. If you do buy at Costco, you will initially purchase a large plastic container that you must trade for ticket books prior to leaving Costco!

Disneyland Resort Two More Days & Nights Free offer –This latest deal offers a five-night, five-day Disneyland Resort vacation package for the price of a three-night, three-day package, giving you two “free” hotel nights and two additional days of theme park admission. The offer is valid for arrivals May 1 and Sept. 26, 2010, and you must book by September 1, 2010 to receive this discount. Disneyland Resort Summer hotel discounts–If you are a Disneyland Resort annual passholder or already have valid admission for your next visit, you can take advantage of a second promotion that offers discounts at the three Disneyland Resort hotels with a minimum 2-night stay. Costco Travel Packages – Many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.com. When purchasing a Costco Disneyland travel package, extras that will be included are: Mickey’s Toontown Madness admission (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), a character breakfast collectible pin and lanyard, and a Costco luggage tag per person, plus a $20 Disneyland Resort gift card per package.

Disney Visa Discounted Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers at a discount of 50% at either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental location between Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure.

Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
