The Pixar Fest edition
Disney's much-hyped Pixar Fest debuted last week, kicking off a resort-wide promotion that will provide a foundation for a whole summer's worth of marketing efforts. This weekend's festivities included the return of two park-hopping parades, the Pixar Play Parade (now in Disneyland), and the Paint the Night Parade (now in Disney California Adventure). Completely new for Pixar Fest is the “Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular.”

In many respects, Pixar Fest is the largest resort-wide promotion since its 60th anniversary. Unlike the Summer of Heroes, which focused on Disney California Adventure, or Disneyland's Fantasmic Summer campaign, Pixar Fest promotes both parks, and involves everything from park decorations and entertainment to foods and merchandise. There is even a Pixar Fest presence in Downtown Disney, where plastic garland-covered topiary characters are now planted throughout the district.

When The Incredibles 2 opens on June 15, Pixar Fest will get another mention, as a new float based on The Incredibles joins the Paint the Night parade. A week later, Disney California Adventure will be in the spotlight once again as Pixar Pier opens, featuring the Incredicoaster makeover of the California Screamin' coaster.

If you followed our Pixar Fest coverage on social media this weekend, you've seen many of the entertainment, food, and merchandise offerings. We've added a handful of new videos to our YouTube channel, and share opinions and highlights of the event below. Entertainment
Pixar Play Parade
In announcing its summer schedule of reruns, a television network proclaimed, “If you haven't seen it, it's new to you!” In some ways, it feels Disney is trying the same tactic with the decade-old Pixar Play Parade— “if you haven't seen it on Main Street, it's new to you!”
The parade has not received a major update since 2013 and its addition of Monsters University elements. The Pixar Fest edition of the parade has three new small parade units, with a new Luxo Jr. float leading the parade. Joy, Sadness, and Bing-Bong ride on a new unit from Inside Out, and Carl Fredricksen, Russell, and Kevin appear in a new Up unit.

As welcome as new additions are, these new floats do not match the size, scale, or look of the original Pixar Play Parade units, and most notably, lack the kinetic elements that make the parade so inviting. The walkabout figure of Russell riding Kevin is truly worth seeing, but the tiny Paradise Falls unit is completely out of proportion.

Paint the Night
The fan-favorite Paint the Night parade is back, this time at Disney California Adventure where some felt it belonged from the beginning. The move to DCA meant scrapping the Frozen float, which was too tall to pass underneath the Red Car Trolley wires above Buena Vista Street. The King Triton float was also modified to fit under the new height requirement.
On June 15, the parade will step off with a new unit inspired by The Incredibles 2.

Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular
If you have not seen a Disneyland fireworks show in the past decade, then “Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular” will thrill you with its use of lasers, projection mapping, fire effects, flying characters, and dimensional elements in addition to traditional fireworks shells.

However, if you've been fortunate enough to have seen any of the Disneyland fireworks of the past 10 years—”Magical…,” “Believe…,” “Remember…,” or “Imagine…,” then this “multimedia fireworks spectacular” will seem formulaic and familiar. While “Together Forever” is a perfectly entertaining 12 minutes, there's very little here that Disneyland fans haven't seen before. Of course, Disney has set the bar so high, creating a show that will truly stun the most cynical of Disney fans might be impossible.

The show has one great new element during the Coco scene, but you'll need to be on Main Street to fully appreciate it. Parents should be warned that the show's obligatory “peril” sequence is based around the incinerator scene from Toy Story 3, which may be too intense for young children, especially if you're on Main Street and surrounded by the projected images.

One bonus for regular visitors: The show's creative team worked to create additional viewing areas for the show, and incorporated new effects into the Rivers of America viewing location. With Main Street, Sleeping Beauty Castle, the Rivers of America, and “it's a small world” all offering a different viewing experience, you can try a new location each time you visit.

Atmosphere entertainment
Along with the three big productions, many of the smaller performing groups around Disneyland and Disney California Adventure have one or two new songs in their rotation for Pixar Fest, and there is a brand-new performing group in DCA. Todd Pickering spent this past Sunday checking out all of the new acts, and will share his thoughts in an upcoming article.
Pixar Shorts Film Festival

Piper, For the Birds, and Lava are the three selections currently showcased at the Pixar Shorts Film Festival in Disney California Adventure. The festival is held in the Sunset Showcase Theater, formerly known as the Muppet Theater in the Hollywood Backlot area. Shows start every 20 minutes, and all three shorts are shown each time. While Disney says the films will rotate, cast members said they do not know when the line-up might change.
Foods and the Alien Pizza Planet
A half-dozen Pixar properties provide inspiration for the Disneyland Resort chefs and pastry teams to create new dishes resort-wide, and there is so much on offer it would take a week to try it all. Along with new food, there are a dozen or more new food collectibles, including mugs, tumblers, sippers, popcorn buckets, straws and light-up clips.

Redd Rockett's Pizza Port transformed overnight into Alien Pizza Planet for Pixar Fest. The signature item is a cheeseburger pizza, which a few people described as tasting like “In-and-Out on a crust.” The fan-favorite chicken fusilli pasta is still on the menu, and is joined by a new pesto carbonara dish. Another new mushroom, pepperoni and bell pepper pizza is based on the Pizza Planet logo. Two new desserts are based on the Little Green Aliens, include a macaron with a blackberry and Meyer lemon filling.
For some reason, the renovation of this restaurant really irks me. This project feels like it was rushed into production, and did not have the budget—or champions—needed to do it right. Workers were still adding decor elements to the restaurant in the days after Pixar Fest began, and it still feels incomplete. I have a mind to go check the nearby Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin to see if any Little Green Alien figures were “borrowed” to add some character to the restaurant.
Disney's earlier restaurant overlay, the Red Rose Tavern in Fantasyland, was a big success, but they weren't trying to create or recreate a place that Disney fans have already seen. With Pizza Planet, we've not only seen it, but we know that the design of the movie restaurant was inspired by this actual building in Disneyland. The question isn't really “why” did Disney decide to do this overlay, the question is why did it take more than 20 years, and then why was it done so haphazardly?
If this is truly just an overlay and will be gone by fall, then I'll put my soap box away and enjoy the new pasta dish. But if this “temporary overlay” hangs around much past Labor Day, I'm going to expect a working claw machine and a permanent sign. And maybe some themed Pizza Planet boxes for those pricey family-size pizzas.

Paradise Pier preview

The Blue Sky Cellar in Disney California Adventure reopened last week with a preview of Pixar Pier. Inside is a model of the former Paradise Pier, showing the overlay of Pixar elements onto the existing buildings.
Also inside is a collection of concept art for the new shops and food stands, including the first look at “Jack Jack's Cookie Num Nums,” a new vending cart near The Incredicoaster.

The Paradise Gardens area has been rethemed to the Pixar Pals during Pixar Fest, with the gazebo serving as a meet-and-greet area for a rotating pair of Pixar characters. As with past festival events, the area has a craft activity for younger children, and houses the AP Corner.

This and that…
…Disneyland will soon begin work on a project to convert the upper level of the former Starcade into an air-conditioned queue for Space Mountain. There is no word if the entrance to the attraction will relocate, or if this is simply an extension of the existing second-level outdoor queue.
…The Matterhorn Bobsleds are closed this April 16–19 for refurbishment.
…The Dapper Day Spring Outing to Disneyland is scheduled for this Sunday, April 22. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend. More information at the event website.

- Matterhorn Bobsleds – closed April 16–19 for refurbishment.
- Dumbo the Flying Elephant – closed through April 26 for refurbishment.
- Pirates of the Caribbean – closes for refurbishment April 23. No reopening date is available at this time, but at least through May 27.
- Space Mountain – closed for one day, May 3, to install the Hyperspace Mountain overlay. The ride will reopen that evening for the Disneyland After Dark private event, and then open to the public on May the 4th.
Disney California Adventure
- World of Color – closes for refurbishment on April 13. No reopening date is available at this time, but at least through May 27.
- Cove Bar – location reopened for Spring Break, and will close again at the end of May as part of the Pixar Pier retheme.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Southern California CityPASS |
Southern California CityPASS ($353/$324) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2018. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $44/$36. This upgraded pass is only available for purchase directly from the CityPASS website. You can also upgrade your CityPASS to add more days at participating locations:

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you pre-purchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Star Wars Imperial Meet-and-Greet at Disneyland – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity in the Star Tours Launch Bay in Tomorrowland. Offered daily from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Darth Vader is once again the character featured at this location. Disneyland Resort merchandise – Cardholders also receive 10 percent off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney-operated retail stores. Southern California residents can visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks multiple days before May 24, 2018 for as little as $159 with the 2018 So Cal Resident ticket. The 2-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 24. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $159 for ages 3 and up, a discount of 20% compared to box office prices and a $10 increase from the 2017 promotion. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $45, a savings of up to $40 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket. If you want an extra day to visit the parks, there is also a 3-Day 1-Park per Day option ($199) and a 3-Day Park Hopper ticket ($244) in the promotion. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them by calling (714) 781-4636. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 21, 2018. Tickets expire May 24, 2018, and are blocked out March 23 through April 8, 2018. |

Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – These package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants.
