Halloween parties move to Disney California Adventure in 2019
Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge opens next month at Disneyland, and the popularity of the new land has already impacted all areas of park operations, from the brand-new parking structure now under construction to the way Fastpass tickets are issued and redeemed. Now Disney has confirmed a change many expected the company to make this year—the after-hours Halloween parties are heading back to Disney California Adventure for 2019.
The Disneyland Resort announced last week that both parks will celebrate Halloween Time September 6 through October 31, and an all-new Oogie Boogie Bash will take place at Disney California Adventure. This after-hours event replaces Mickey's Halloween Party previously hosted at Disneyland. Tickets go on sale this week, about a month earlier than last year, so you can begin making your fall plans now.

Oogie Boogie Bash
This after-hours event takes place on 20 nights in September and October, and requires a separate event ticket to attend.
Like Mickey's Halloween Party, Oogie Boogie Bash offers Disney fans young and old the opportunity to dress up and experience trick-or-treat stations, themed entertainment, the debut of the Frightfully Fun Parade and Ride of the Headless Horseman at Disney California Adventure, and meet Disney characters in their Halloween finery.
New for the 2019 event is an all-new World of Color show called “Villainous!,” which is exclusive to Oogie Boogie Bash. From the show description, “Oogie Boogie weaves a Halloween tale about a young girl (and all-new character) named Shelley Marie. In “Villainous!,” Shelley has a decision to make about her Halloween costume for this year, and finds herself wondering if she could really be as strong and unique as some of her favorite Disney characters. This twisted tale carries Shelley on an unforgettable journey, exploring the villainous side of Disney characters through fountains, lights, lasers, projections and special effects. “Villainous!” shows guests that, deep down, there’s a little villain in all of us.”
Also new is a world of Disney Villains at the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail. A Disney press release says, “Redwood Creek will be completely transformed with lighting, projections, sounds and special effects, creating a dreamlike environment.”
There is quite a bit of new entertainment planned for Oogie Boogie Bash, including Mickey's Trick and Treat show in Hollywood Land, designed for younger visitors, and a DescenDance DJ dance party in Hollywood Land, aimed at 'tween fans of the Descendants franchise from the Disney Channel.
Disney's announcement also speaks of enhancements to the Oogie Boogie decor on Buena Vista Street, with new projected show effects on the Carthay Circle Theater.
Tickets for Oogie Boogie Bash start at $110, with Halloween night tickets up $15 from 2018 to $145 per person. Annual Passport discounts apply to only four of the parties, all on weeknights (see the price calendar below).
Tickets to Oogie Boogie Bash include a three-hour early-admission period before the party kicks off to visit Disney California Adventure before the main event begins. The 2018 event included PhotoPass downloads of souvenir photos taken during the event, but this perk is not mentioned for 2019 and has likely been discontinued.
Advance purchase tickets for the Halloween Party go on sale to Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders on Tuesday, April 23. Passholders can purchase tickets online by logging into their account on the Disneyland website, by by calling (714) 781-4636, or in person at a Disneyland Resort ticket booth.

This announcement made no mention of Disneyland's Halloween Screams fireworks show, which in recent years was shown only during Mickey's Halloween Party. There's no word whether Disney plans to present the show at Disneyland during Halloween Time, or if the show has been retired.
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway coming to Disneyland
The Disney rumor mill has been churning about a new attraction for Disneyland, and the speculation recently kicked up a notch due to a stack of permits for relocation and demolition work on buildings behind Mickey's Toontown.
Last week Disney confirmed that Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will open in 2022 at Disneyland. The ride is also currently under construction at Disney's Hollywood Studios, where it replaces The Great Movie Ride. The Walt Disney World version was scheduled to open in Fall 2019, but last Friday's announcement slipped in a mention that the Florida opening is now slated for Spring 2020. The ride will be an addition to Mickey's Toontown, and will not replace any current attractions.

If you haven't heard much about Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, I've included an excerpt from this Walt Disney World Update, where Alan S. Dalinka shares his notes from the Destination D panel devoted to the new attraction. The presentation was given by members of the Walt Disney Imagineering team, led by show writer and creative director Kevin Rafferty:
As Kevin Rafferty explained, the new attraction's home inside the Chinese Theatre is a natural fit for Mickey and Minnie, as they have had many premieres there, dating back to some of their early shorts. The attraction itself, however, takes its artistic direction from the new Mickey Shorts that appear on Disney Channel and created by the TV Animation team. Various speakers during all of Destination D referred to the style of the new Mickey Shorts as “inspired by” Mickey's appearance in the 1930's and “interpreted” for modern times and audiences.
The overall storyline of the attraction has guests actually entering into a new Mickey short. A newly created Mickey short, named “Mickey Mouse in Perfect Picnic” is introduced in the pre-show area, and it also establishes the new theme song which was composed by Chris Willis who has been (according to his clarifying Tweet directed to us) the composer for all of the new Mickey shorts.
When faced with the honor (or task) of creating a memorable song for the attraction, Chris Willis relied on advice from Disney Legend Richard Sherman (which he, in turn, says he learned from his music-composing father)—use the three esses of songwriting: make it “Singable,” “Simple,” and “Sincere.” The theme music itself is being recorded by a 65-piece orchestra.
Among the details shared by the panel of the new attraction's ties to Mickey's history is its connection with Jimmy MacDonald, the second voice of Mickey Mouse (after Walt Disney, himself when he got too busy) and longtime sound effects guy for many of Disney's earliest cartoons. The “soundscape” of the attraction is being created “old school” using some of the very props and devices Jimmy MacDonald had used and Imagineering was able to locate and restore.
The ride vehicle is a train, of course, with Goofy at the controls of the locomotive. Following that “old school” approach to creating the train sounds, even the train's whistle sounds are being created using the very same whistle that was used when Steamboat Willie was made, the first cartoon to use synchronized sound and, of course, the first Mickey Short released in theaters.
The Imagineers say that the attraction uses “every trick we know” and that, like the animated shorts, makes a lot of use of “cartoon logic” and surprises that you would not expect. The only trick the Imagineers disclosed was employing unique paint to the train locomotive itself so that it has a unique look under white light and black light.
Disney says the California version will have, “special details that promise to make this amazing attraction unique for Disneyland park guests.”
A new welcome to Adventureland
Disneyland visitors got their first look at the widened Adventureland entrance last week, as Disney removed the arch and sign and removed an alcove from the walkway. While the Adventureland entrance arch is refurbished to fit the wider walkway, Disney has installed a vintage Adventureland sign outside the land. In a past life, this sign perched atop the Tahitian Terrace entry spire and greeted passengers when they returned from their trip around the World Famous Jungle Cruise.

Disney managers said they hoped to have the new Adventureland entrance installed by June.
Pop-Up Disney opens Friday
“Pop-Up Disney! A Mickey Celebration” opens this Friday, April 26 in the former ESPN Zone space in Downtown Disney.

As part of Disney's 90th anniversary, “World's Biggest Mouse Party,” this made-for-Instagram installation, will provide a series of picture-perfect themed rooms inspired by Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Disney says the experience will take about 90 minutes, after which you can browse the Pop-Up Disney! gift shop, or head to Marceline’s Confectionery for themed snacks.
Tickets are $30 for weekdays (Monday through Thursday) before 4:00 p.m., or $35 per person all other times. The venue is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. When you order your tickets, you pick the date and time you wish to visit, with tickets sold in 10-minute intervals. The final reservation is for 8:50 p.m. each night. The retail store remains open until 11:00 p.m. You can purchase tickets through the event website, but note that opening day, April 26, is completely sold out.

The ticket includes an unexpected perk: up to five hours complementary parking on Downtown Disney.
Two important notes:
- Pop-Up Disney! guidelines differ from those for the Disney theme parks: Food, drink, strollers, tripods, and selfie sticks are not allowed inside the attraction.
- Missing your time slot invalidates your ticket. Disney asks you to arrive on time, but no earlier than 15 minutes before your ticketed slot, to allow for parking and security screening.
Disney Channel Fan Fest this Saturday at DCA
The Disneyland Resort will host the Disney Channel Fan Fest at Disney California Adventure on Saturday, April 27. This one-day event features presentations, previews, panel discussions, musical performances and sessquestion-and-answer sessions with stars of Disney Channel series and movies.
Productions to be featured during the Fan Fest include Descendants 3, Zombies, Kim Possible, Andi Mack, Raven’s Home, Sydney to the Max, Coop & Cami Ask the World, BUNK’D, Bizaardvark, and the upcoming Just Roll With It.
The day kicks off with the Disney Channel Cavalcade at Disney California Adventure, then continues with a series of six main stage presentations:
- 11:00 a.m. – Cavalcade at Disney California Adventure
- Noon – Main Stage session: Just Roll With It
- 1:00 p.m. – Main Stage session: Coop & Cami Ask the World, Sydney to the Max, BUNK'd
- 2:00 p.m. – Main Stage session: Raven's Home, Andi Mack
- 3:00 p.m. – Main Stage session: Disney Channel Animation Celebration
- 5:00 p.m. – Main Stage session: Disney Channel Voices Showcase
- 6:00 p.m. – Main Stage session: Descendants 3
The Disney Channel will live-stream the opening cavalcade and all of the Main Stage sessions on the DisneyNOW Disney Channel YouTube channel and the Disney Channel Facebook page.
Some of the performers will welcome fans during meet-and-greet opportunities throughout the day. You must obtain a wristband to participate in a meet-and-greet. Disney will distribute wristbands on a first-come, first-serve basis starting at the 8:00 a.m. park opening on Saturday, April 27. Valid theme park admission is required to enter the park.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Disneyland Resort Annual Passports

- Disney Signature Pass ($1,149) – includes discounts and parking. Digital PhotoPass downloads are included only for renewing passholders who had the benefit on their original pass; new purchases do not include this benefit. Some blockout dates, including December holidays and other peak days.
- Disney Deluxe Pass ($799) – includes some discounts. Some blockout dates, including December holidays and other peak days. Park-specific blockout dates apply to all passes purchased, renewed or activated after June 2, 2018.
- Southern California Annual Passport ($599) – includes some discounts. Many blockout dates, including Saturdays, December holidays and other peak days. Everyone
Purchase with purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced-price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.
Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.
Character dining vouchers – Disneyland is no longer offering tickets or vouchers to be pre-purchased for Character Dining. You may still make reservations 60 days in advance with payment due at the restaurant.
Annual Passholders

Character meet-and-greet at Disney California Adventure – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free image download per visit.
Star Wars Imperial meet-and-greet at Disneyland – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity in the Star Tours Launch Bay in Tomorrowland. Offered daily from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Darth Vader is once again the character featured at this location.

Service Members
Disneyland Resort Military Discounts
Ticket discounts
Through December 18, 2019, active and retired U.S. military personnel (including active and retired members of the United States Coast Guard, National Guard and Reservists) or their spouses can purchase:
- Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $178 each (an increase of $10 from the 2018 offer)
- Disney Military Promotional 4-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $198 each (an increase of $10 from the 2018 offer)
Disneyland tickets may be used through December 18, 2019, excluding the spring break blockout of April 14–22, 2019.
Active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets for themselves and up to five additional family members or friends. No more than six Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or spouse) pursuant to this offer. All tickets and options are non-transferable and must be used by December 18, 2019.
Hotel discounts
Military discounts are valid for stays most nights from January 1 through December 19, 2019. Travel must be completed by December 20, 2019.
Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (714) 520-7088 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30% to 40% off, based on room category.
Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member.
Photopass Discount
Eligible service members can purchase the Photopass Collection for $49 plus tax through December 21, 2019. The package includes digital downloads of all PhotoPass photos in the user's account when they redeem the voucher; a voucher for a dining print package, and a Disneyland photo disc with 350 stock photos from around the Disneyland Resort.

Here are some other details you should know about regarding the offers:
- Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased at participating U.S. military sales outlets ONLY by Eligible Service Members (defined below) or their spouses (but not both), for use by themselves and other family members and friends, as provided herein. These Tickets may not be otherwise transferred, distributed or resold.
- Eligible Service Members are active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service (PHS), and the Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
- The actual prices charged at the individual U.S. military base ticket offices for Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be less than the prices set forth above.
- Participating military sales outlets must require that Eligible Service Members (or their spouses) present valid military identification to purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets.
- Disney 3-Day or 4-Day Military Promotional Tickets for admission to the Disneyland Resort expire and may not be used after December 19, 2019. Valid military identification will be required for purchase and use.
- No more than six (6) Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased and (if applicable) activated by any Eligible Service Member or spouse (regardless of the place of purchase and whether purchased by that person or that person’s spouse). In addition, one of the six (6) tickets purchased must be used by the Eligible Service Member or his/her spouse.
- Each Disney Military Promotional Ticket must be used by the same person on any and all days.
- The Photopass Collection can be purchased only in person at Kingswell Camera Shop in Disney California Adventure, or at Main Street Photo Supply in Disneyland.

Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.
Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – these package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants.
