Pixar Fest 2024 begins
“It’s better than Pixar Nite was, and it didn’t cost an extra $150.” That’s how one reader summed up their experience at the updated Pixar Fest, which opened last Friday, April 25 at the Disneyland Resort. Pixar Fest is an updated version of a 2018 promotion by the same name, and Disney took the opportunity to include characters from five recent Pixar releases in the mix. The event also ties into the recent rededication of the Paradise Pier Hotel as the Pixar Place Hotel.
The summertime promotion is a celebration of all things Pixar, and takes place at both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. Like the 2020 Disney After Dark: Pixar Nite event held at Disney California Adventure, Pixar Fest has special food, merchandise, live entertainment, dance parties, character meet-and-greets and more. Unlike that event, Pixar Fest is included with theme park admission, and runs daily through August 4, 2024.
As this is a resort-wide effort, you’ll find Pixar Fest decorations starting from the arrival at the parking lots, throughout Downtown Disney, in the esplande between the parks and inside Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. The esplanade decorations originally included an overhead canopy of hanging streamers, but those were abruptly taken down Wednesday afternoon.
MousePlanet was among a group of media invited for a preview of the Pixar Fest offerings last week. Keep reading for an overview of the event.
Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration
This parade at Disney California Adventure incorporates several units from the 2018 version of the Pixar Play Parade, and introduces three new units from recent Pixar films – “Soul” (2020), “Luca” (2021) and “Turning Red” (2022). Show director Robin Trowbridge says the parade has a message, taken from the stories represented – When we have friends we are better together. He says that we’ve learned from our Pixar pals that friends will accept us and will help lift us up, no matter what we’re going through. It’s worth noting that the three new floats are based on films released on Disney+ during the COVID pandemic, and which didn’t have theatrical release until earlier this year.
Music can make or break a parade, and the arrangements for this parade will have most Pixar fans dancing and singing along. The infectious “Better Together” theme song is woven around themes from the movies represented, and of course the “Turning Red” float had to incorporate “Nobody Like U” from the fictional group 4*Town. This is sure to be the most popular of the new floats because it’s the first appearance of Mei in her red panda form, but I found it hard to get a good look at any of the performers because of the design of the float.
The “Soul” float would have been much more dynamic if the “music students” actually played their instruments. Instead, they pantomime their performance, and it just looks awkward. Not since “Mr. Holland’s Opus” has a high-school music teacher been so celebrated by his students.
For the “Luca” unit, the designers wanted to show Luca and Alberto in both their human and sea monster forms by having them “swim” in semi-transparent float. It may have been the lighting, but it was really hard to see their tails and differently-colored legs as intended.
The parade brings back the lead Luxo, Jr. lamp, as well as the floats from “Up” and “Inside Out.” The Incredibles make an appearance with Frozone on their hovercraft devices, and the parade wraps with the “Toy Story” dump truck and a float featuring character pairs from “Coco”, “Monster’s, Inc”. and “Toy Story”. Trowbridge says that Better Together features the most Pixar characters of any parade ever.
You can get reserved viewing along the parade route for this parade by purchasing the “Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration!” parade viewing dining package. Seating is offered at the Sonoma Terrace and at tables placed along the parade route outside the restaurant.
Better Together is a cute parade, but it doesn’t hold up when compared to the original Pixar Play Parade, with its towering floats and kinetic energy. The parade seems short and oddly-timed, with long gaps between the units during the performance we saw. However, the dancers in this parade are absolutely delightful, as they bring the movement and energy that the static floats don’t have. Each one, from the roller bladers at the start of the parade to the dancers who sign “better together” as the floats roll off-stage at the end, were a joy to watch.
You can watch the first performance on our MousePlanet YouTube channel.
Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular
Introduced in 2018 for Pixar Fest, the Together Forever fireworks have also been updated to include characters and music fro Pixar films released since that time, including “Soul,” “Luca,” “Elemental,” “Turning Red” and “Onward.” (Sharp-eyed viewers may also glimpse characters from the upcoming “Inside Out 2.”)
KC Wilkerson, show director for the return of Together Forever, said the team wanted to bring back all of the moments that guests enjoyed from the previous version of the show. As before, the show opens with Buzz Lightyear taking flight over Sleeping Beauty Castle, and the house from “Up” makes a repeat appearance as well.
Wilkerson said the original plan was to just add the new characters to the old show, but the team instead decided they needed to break the show apart and add the new characters into the appopriate chapters. “Remember, Together Forever is a story,” Wilkeson said. “It’s about meeting new friends, taking those friends and setting out on adventures, and overcoming adversity together.”
The updated show includes key moments from these stories, and makes use of advances in projector technology to project the animation in greater detail and with richer colors. New pyrotechnic shells were designed just for the show, and fireworks will be presented most nights of the run.
The team worked with Pixar artists to create brand-new character animation. If you watch from one of the projection viewing areas, you’ll see Mei transform from her red panda form back into a girl in animation drawn just for Together Forever.
Like all of the recent nighttime shows which combine fireworks and projections, you’ll have a different experience at each of the viewing areas. If you happen to watch from “it’s a small world” area, pay close attention and try to find six Hidden Mickeys incorporated into the animation there.
Pixar Pals Playtime Party
Disneyland’s Fantasyland Theater is home to this new family offering, and Pixar fans should set aside a chunk of time to experience the whole thing. Dancers and Pixar characters appear on the main stage, and even visit the theater floor for a dance party. There is something quite charming about watching Sadness from “Inside Out” try to get into the dancing spirit. In between sets, Pixar Shorts play on the giant LED screen.
The theater floor is surrounded with photo opportunities, where you can meet characters from “Onward” and “Up.” There are also backdrops with props from “Monsters, Inc.,” “Cars” and “A Bug’s Life.” The floor can get crowded and a bit overwhelming for young children, but there is plenty of seating where you can view the stage show from a more comfortable distance.
There are more photo opponities on the upper level, including a “Luca” meet-and-greet, and a craft area. Outside, Troubador Tavern serves up Pixar-themed food and drink during Pixar Fest.
The posted hours are currently 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and individual characters appear throughout the day.
Club Pixar
Club Pixar is the latest evening dance party concept at Disney California Adventure. Open nightly from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., this is a family-friendly event with colorful neon decoations, a live DJ and dancers. The Hollywood Lounge offers a variety of adult beverages, while the nearby Studio Catering Company truck serves snacks and sodas.
Disneyland regulars have longed for a worthy sucessor to the beloved Mad T Party, and this event is not it. I don’t see it drawing large crowds, but it’s a good spot to hang out while you’re waiting for World of Color, or your return time for Guardians of the Galaxy. Children probably won’t be interested in the interpretive dance segments, but will be drawn to the drive in theater showing Pixar Shorts. There are also cute and silly carnival games with a Pixar twist, with nothing but bragging rights to be won.
Dug visits Disney California Adventure
If you take a stroll outside the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail this summer, you might run into Dug from Pixar’s “Up.” If you do, you’re in for a treat, as this good boy has found his translator collar and is ready to chat. Disney offered us a sneak preview of the meet-and-greet last week, and we hope you agree this is absolutely charming.
Critter Country closing Wednesday
Most of Critter Country is scheduled to close this Wednesday, May 1, including The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh attraction, The Briar Patch shop, and Pooh Corner. The work is related to the construction of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and the re-theme of the Critter Country stores. Disney has not said when the area will reopen.
The Hungry Bear restaurant will remain open during this work, as will the pathway to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
Downtown Disney soft opening
While the three new Downtown Disney restaurants – Paseo, Centrico and Tiendita – are not scheduled to open until May, Centrico appears to have opened early. Employees were spotted in a meeting at the location Wednesday morning, and on Wednesday night the outdoor bar and restaurant was serving walk-up guests. On Friday, employees were seen testing Tiendita’s self-ordering kiosks, but we have not had word if the restaurant soft-opened over the weekend.
We’re very much looking forward to these three new eateries, and will share reviews once they’ve been up and running for a few weeks.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of October 11, 2023.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

SoCal Resident Ticket Offer
The Southern California Resident Ticket offers residents admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure up to three weekdays between January 2 and June 2, 2024 for $225, or up to any three days between January 2 and June 2, 2024 for $275.
You can use every day of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit different parks on different days, but you can’t use it to enter both parks on the same day. For an additional $70, you can upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day.
You can also add Disney Genie+ service for an additional $90 for the three days when purchased in advance. Remember that you can also upgrade to Disney Genie+ after you enter the theme park (subject to availability) and pay the then-current daily fee. We recommend going with the latter option for your first experience with Disney Genie+, just to make sure the service provides a value for you. If you love it, you can always add the Genie+ to your remaining days.
Tickets are available through the Disneyland website, or through MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.
There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means that you can use the first admission on January 2 and wait until June 2 to use the remaining admission. However, remember that you must make a theme park reservation for each day that you want to use the ticket. Disney also warns that ticket sales may be paused or ended at any time, so it’s probably best to purchase early so you’re ready to make reservations as soon as they open for your desired travel dates. Reservations can now be made up to 180 days in advance, which as of press time includes the entire duration of this offer.
Disney states that proof of residency is required for purchase and admission, and each resident can purchase up to five tickets per day.

Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (833) 618-0536 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30% to 40% off, based on room category. Concierge rooms, Signature or Premium suites, or 2-or 3-Bedroom Villas are excluded from the offer, and this offer can not be combined with any other discount.
Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member, provided the spouse stays in one of the rooms booked.
