Dumbo flies again above Fantasyland
Disneyland's Dumbo the Flying Elephant reopened at Disneyland last week, following a refurbishment that included enlarging and covering most of the ride's outdoor queue, as well as redesigning the loading area and boarding process to speed up ride times. While the result is a more comfortable wait for the popular but low-capacity ride, it comes at the cost of one of the few relatively quiet spots in Fantasyland.

The new queue occupies most of the space that once provided a walkway around and behind Dumbo, and incorporates the awnings around the band organ behind the ride. Althugh tband organ building itself was spared, the only way to reach it now is through the queue for the ride. This little nook of Fantasyland was a great spot to relax and indulge in some people-watching, and it will be missed by those who once enjoyed it.

New shade structures cover most of the queue, with strings of light providing illumination at night. There are new frames mounted on the walls of the queue, inset with very temporary-looking printed posters. These frames look similar to those for the digital signs present at some attractions at Walt Disney World, which display animated, interactive, and sometimes even personalized graphics and messages to entertain people waiting in line.

Dumbo's new queue is completely wheelchair-accessible, which is good news for many visitors with disabilities. For those who use Disney's Disability Access Service for non-ambulatory issues, you can obtain a return time for Dumbo.

A new boarding process is designed to increase the speed and safety of the loading cycle by assigning riders to specific Dumbo elephants. As cast members group riders, they assign each party to stand on a specific number in the loading area. This number and color corresponds to a specific Dumbo elephant on the ride. Ideally, this ensures that riders know exactly where they should board, and eliminates pushing and running as riders race to claim a favorite color elephant. It also eliminates the use of the “magic feather” boarding passes, another bit of nostalgia for some Disneyland fans. Now, if you have your heart set on riding in a particular purple Dumbo, just talk to the cast members, who have a color-coded chart and can match you with the purple Dumbo you really wanted.
Grad Nites begin this week
The first Grad Nite of the 2018 season is this Friday, May 4. If you're planning a visit during this period, be sure to consult the schedule of Grad Nite dates so you can plan appropriately. For 2018, Grad Nite is held on May 4, 5, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 22, 23, 29, and 30; and June 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, and 9.
For 2018, the event includes park-hopper access to both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disney California Adventure from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. after that park closes to “day guests.”
Schools can choose to arrive whenever they wish during their Grad Nite event. Some arrive right at park opening to maximize their time, while others arrive later due to travel time or other activities. With the Mickey and Friends parking structure now closed to oversize vehicles like school buses, look for heavier arrival traffic in the Toy Story parking lot.
Based on reports since the event switched to this format in 2014, the parks grow increasingly crowded as the day goes on and more students arrive. Grad Nites are often a good excuse to leave the theme parks early to enjoy a nice dinner in Downtown Disney.
Beware: Formal Grad Nites are not the only times that the Disneyland Resort is crowded with student groups. The last weeks of school are popular times for class trips, something that Disney actively encourages through special pricing and activities for school groups. Those visits won't appear on any calendar, but are a fact of Disney life during this season, and have already begun making a noticeable impact on park attendance in recent weeks.
With so many schools on year-round calendars now, you should consider the period between March and mid-June as one big, hazy spring-break-into-graduation season. So while the Grad Nite calendar can give you an idea of when the most high school seniors will be on property, there is no way to know when a school district from Central California is sending its ninth graders for their own promotion celebration.
Pixar Pal-a-Round
Disney last week continued its slow-trickle media campaign leading up to the June 23 reopening of Pixar Pier by releasing the new name and an additional image for the former Mickey's Fun Wheel. Although Mickey's face will still be the main icon, the ride will now be known as the Pixar Pal-a-Round, with each of the attraction's 24 gondolas sporting new artwork featuring pairs of characters from Pixar films. The new concept art shows EVE paired with Wall-E, Mater paired with Lightning McQueen from CarsInside OutCoco.
With Pixar Pal-a-Round apparently being the winning name in the redesign process, we can only wonder what the runners-up were.
Downtown Disney notes
Ice cream lovers got a scoop of good news last week when Portland-based Salt & Straw announced that a new location will open in Downtown Disney later this year. Salt & Straw is known for small-batch ice creams and sorbets, made with locally sourced organic ingredients. Flavors vary by region, with a menu of year-round flavors joined by seasonal creations.
Salt & Straw will replace Haagen-Dazs, which is slated to close by the end of May.
Several other Downtown Disney businesses will close by the end of June as Disney begins construction of a fourth hotel on the west side of Downtown Disney. Here are the updated dates for each location.
- ESPN Zone – expected to close June 2.
- Rainforest Cafe – expected to close June 17
- Starbucks (West Side) – expected to close June 23.
- AMC Theaters – scheduled to close by June 30; exact date unconfirmed.
- Earl of Sandwich – scheduled to close by June 30; exact date unconfirmed.
- Alamo Rent-a-Car – scheduled to close by June 30; exact date unconfirmed.
Anaheim's Garden Walk shopping center has announced that AMC Theaters will open a new location there in early 2019. The press release did not state how many screens the new theater will have, but MousePlanet reader Promo-Man says six screens remain from the former Garden Walk UltraLuxe movie theater, which closed in 2015. The House of Blues used a portion of the former theater in its relocation to Garden Walk, and this AMC Theater project will use the rest of the space.
Second chance to celebrate Star Wars during Disneyland After Dark
Citing “overwhelming response” to the first event, Disneyland is hosting another Disneyland After Dark Star Wars Celebration event, this time on Wednesday, May 9. Tickets for the first event on Thursday, May 3 sold out in just hours, and Disney added a second evening to give even more fans a chance to plunk down $95 for an evening of exclusive Star Wars-themed entertainment.
Although these offerings will have already debuted in Disneyland by the time of the second party, attendees at the May 9 event will be able to ride Hyperspace Mountain, see the March of the First Order (new to Disneyland), get some face time with Rey at new (to Disneyland) meet-and-greet, and enjoy a galactic dance party.
There will also be themed entertainment at locations around the park, meet-and-greets and “character encounters,” and possibly a second chance to purchase event merchandise remaining from the May 3 event. Disney's PhotoPass department will again be a key player in the event, and admission includes free digital downloads of the PhotoPass photos taken during the event. Attendees are encouraged to wear costumes, though the same guidelines apply to this event as they do for the Halloween parties.
The event runs from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., though ticket holders can enter Disneyland as early as 6:00 p.m. if they choose. In addition to Hyperspace Mountain, select Disneyland rides—including Star Tours – The Adventures Continue, “it's a small world,” Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Matterhorn Bobsleds, and Jungle Cruise—will open for the event.
Tickets to this after-hours event are $95 per person, ages 3 and up, and do not include parking. No discounts apply. Tickets go on sale Tuesday, May 1 via the event website.

This and that…
…Pirates of the Caribbean is scheduled to reopen on Saturday, June 9, following the refurbishment to update the auction scene.
…Many Disneyland annual passholders were disappointed after the Little Green Alien popcorn bucket, the current offering in the refillable popcorn bucket promotion, sold out just days after being released for sale last week. Though passholders were limited to one bucket per purchase, there was no limit to the number of times a single passholder could get back in line and make a purchase. Naturally, some of the buckets showed up in online auctions, selling for as much as $75. Cast members say they do not know if the buckets will be restocked prior to the end of the promotion.
…This item is a few months delayed, but was prompted by a question from reader Chris Silva via Twitter. Chris wanted to know when Disneyland's Rancho del Zocalo discontinued breakfast service. The chance happened in early February, when breakfast service debuted at the Red Rose Taverne (formerly Pinocchio Village Haus) in Fantasyland. The Red Rose Taverne menu includes an open-face Croque Madame, a garden vegetable hash with baked egg, and a breakfast flatbread. More traditional items are also on the menu, including pancakes – Mickey shaped or regular – and a plate with scrambled eggs, bacon and potatoes.

- Pirates of the Caribbean – closed for refurbishment as of April 23. Reopens Saturday, June 9.
- Space Mountain – closed for one day, May 3, to install the Hyperspace Mountain overlay. The ride will reopen that evening for the Disneyland After Dark private event, and then open to the public on May the 4th.
Disney California Adventure
- World of Color – closes for refurbishment on April 13. No reopening date is available at this time, but Disney says the show will reopen in “late June.”
- Cove Bar – location reopened for Spring Break, and will close again on May 29 as part of the Pixar Pier retheme.
The following attractions closed January 8 as part of the Pixar Pier retheme. Pixar Pier reopens June 23, and most of the locations will have new names when they return:

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Southern California CityPASS |
Southern California CityPASS ($353/$324) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2018. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $44/$36. This upgraded pass is only available for purchase directly from the CityPASS website. You can also upgrade your CityPASS to add more days at participating locations:

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you pre-purchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Southern California residents can visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks multiple days before May 24, 2018 for as little as $159 with the 2018 So Cal Resident ticket. The 2-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 24. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $159 for ages 3 and up, a discount of 20% compared to box office prices and a $10 increase from the 2017 promotion. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $45, a savings of up to $40 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket. If you want an extra day to visit the parks, there is also a 3-Day 1-Park per Day option ($199) and a 3-Day Park Hopper ticket ($244) in the promotion. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them by calling (714) 781-4636. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature.
