Looking ahead to Halloween Time
Disney last week confirmed that the Paradise Gardens area of Disney California Adventure will once again be home to the Plaza de la Familia, a Día de los Muertos-themed offering featuring food, entertainment and activities.
Returning this year is “A Musical Celebration of Coco,” featuring the Grammy Award-winning Mariachi Divas. The show is led by Mateo, a “singing host,” and features performances of three songs from the 2017 Disney-Pixar film Coco. New this year, a figure of Miguel will join the procession.
Plaza de la Familia will also feature a holiday menu at the Paradise Garden Grill, a Tree of Life photo opportunity, and additional performances by the Mariachi Divas, and will run from Friday, September 7 to Friday, November 2.
Disney also released a preview of the collectible food and beverage containers for Halloween 2018, including new popcorn buckets and mugs. Check out the announcement about seasonal celebration here, and about the collection here, both at the Disney Parks Blog.
Happiest Haunts tour
We have dates and details of the 2018 Happiest Haunts Tour of Disneyland.
The “Ghost Relations” tour guides are back again to lead you on the Happiest Haunts tour of the Disneyland Resort. From Disney:
“This year, the guided tour is going back to the roots of Halloween, sharing ghost stories around Disneyland Park, searching for treats, encountering tricks—and even visiting a character from the Haunted Mansion!
You’ll learn about pranksters, spirits, characters—and their creators—from The Haunted Mansion and films throughout the years. It’s frightful fun you’ll never forget!”
The tour is $85 per person for guests age 3 and older. Annual Passholders and Disney Vacation Club Members receive a 15 percent discount. Cast members save on select dates only—check with Cast Activities for details.
The tour is offered daily between September 7 and October 31, and begins at 5:00 p.m. Theme park admission is not included. If you book a tour on the same day as that evening's Mickey’s Halloween Party, you will be escorted out of the park at the conclusion of the tour.
You can make reservations for Disney's Happiest Haunts 30 days in advance by calling the Guided Tour office at (714) 781-8687, or in person at Disneyland. Tour size is capped at 15 people per tour. Foreign language or sign language interpretation is available with advance notice.
Tickets available for CHOC Walk Ambassador Luau
Tickets are on sale for the CHOC Walk Ambassadors’ Rock’N Luau on Saturday, August 25 at Splitsville Luxury Lanes in Downtown Disney. The event is a fundraiser for CHOC Children’s Hospital, and takes place the evening before the 2018 CHOC Walk in the Park at the Disneyland Resort.
The CHOC Walk Ambassadors’ Rock’N Luau is a fun filled afternoon for the entire family. This “1950s Polynesian” themed event will feature activities for kids (and kids at heart), a Rock’N raffle, bowlin’ buffet, mini-bowling tournament and authentic Polynesian entertainment—all to help raise awareness and funds to support CHOC Children’s Hospital. Guests are encouraged to rock their favorite vintage Hawaiian shirts or fabulous '50s gear.
The CHOC Walk Ambassadors’ Rock’N Luau is hosted by the CHOC Walk Ambassadors, grateful CHOC patients and their families who coordinate this incredible fundraiser! These courageous kids represent the children we “Luau” for, past, present, and future.
Tickets are $85 per person, or $110 if entering the bowling tournament. The event is from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m., which gives walkers plenty of time for a good night sleep before the CHOC Walk Sunday morning. Purchase tickets from the event website.
UEA canceled, but the crowds may come anyway
Several readers have asked for the dates in which the Disneyland Resort will be more crowded due to the Utah Education Association (UEA) convention, typically held in October. The annual event creates a long weekend for participating school districts, with many families planning a fall visit during what has become known as “Utah Escapes to Anaheim” weekend.
As it happens, the UEA convention was canceled for 2018, but many Utah public and charter schools had already finalized their academic calendars with a “Fall Break” scheduled October 18–19, 2018. A handful of Utah schools observe Fall Break the following week. If past years are an indication, look for related crowding October 18–23, with holiday-level crowds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 19–21.
Mickey's Halloween Party sales tracking
Mickey's Halloween Party is Disneyland's very popular after-hours event, and some nights have already sold out.
- Sold out – October 5, 12, 26
- Available – September 19, 21, 24, 26, 28; October 2, 9, 16, 19, 23, 29, 31.
In 2017, all event nights sold out by September 15, so you should buy your tickets as soon as you can commit to a night. Tickets are available via Disneyland.com, at Disneyland ticket booths, or by phoning (714) 781-4636.
But what happens if you had your heart (and vacation plans) set on attending a specific, sold-out night? Before you turn to Craigslist, StubHub, or eBay (all of which bring with them the very high risk of being defrauded), here are official ways you may still be able to buy legitimate party tickets directly from Disney:
- Call Disneyland and order tickets by phone – a limited number of tickets may be available by phone for events that are sold out on line. Call (714) 781-4636 to purchase by phone. Expect to wait on hold for at least 10 minutes.
- Visit Disneyland and purchase tickets in person – a limited number of tickets may be available at the Disneyland ticket booths for events that are sold out on line. However, if you tried to purchase tickets by phone and the night you wanted was sold out, they will not be available at the ticket booths.
- Disneyland Resort Hotels – if you are a guest staying at one of the three Disney-owned hotels (Disneyland Hotel, Paradise Pier Hotel, or Grand Californian Hotel), check with your hotel desk the morning of the event to see if they have tickets available for purchase. Last year, MousePlanet Community Leader Angela told us that a small number of tickets were reserved for Disneyland Resort Hotel guests, and were released for sale at 5:30 a.m. the morning of each party. Officially these tickets are intended only for concierge-level guests, but we've heard conflicting stories about that, and it seems some guests in standard rooms have been allowed to buy the tickets as well. If you're already staying on property, it does not hurt to ask. Angela warns that these tickets sell out very quickly, so don't wait until the party starts to try to make your purchase.
- Friends or family –if friends/family already have tickets, they may be able to purchase additional tickets the day of the party. Again, a small number of tickets are reserved for same-day sales to help accommodate ticket holders who may have miscounted how many they need, or who had friends/family unexpectedly join them. As with the tickets reserved for hotel guests, these are very limited, and go on sale as soon as the ticket booths open in the morning. If at all possible, get there first thing in the morning to increase your chance of getting tickets. You must have the other event tickets with you the cast member needs to see them, and cannot just trust your word that “so-and-so already has tickets.”

…The finished dimensional figurine of Bing Bong is still not in place in Pixar Pier, but the sheet which had been covering the future display area has been replaced with a colorful temporary wall featuring an image from the concept art.
…Disney California Adventure will close at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 13 for the annual cast member service awards.
…Main Street Cinema closes for refurbishment this Tuesday, August 14. The reopening date is unknown, but after September 23.
…The Disneyland Resort will host a Culinary Job Fair on Wednesday, September 19 at the Paradise Pier Hotel. The Disneyland Resort is currently hiring full-time and part-time positions across its two theme parks, three hotels and the Downtown Disney District.
Job fair attendees will have the chance to meet with recruiters and department leaders to ask questions and find out what it’s like to be a part of these dedicated teams. Qualified candidates can even apply, interview and accept an offer on site. This event is open to the public and candidates are encouraged to apply on line. in advance to reserve an appointment. Walk-in appointments will also be available the day of the job fair, and computers will be available to complete applications.

- Golden Zephyr – closes for refurbishment September 10–16.
- King Triton's Carousel – becomes Jessie's Critter Carousel, opening in 2019.
The following attractions will close by the end of summer to make room for Super Heroes land.
- “It's Tough to be a Bug” – closed permanently.
- Flik's Flyers – closes September 4. The ride will move to Pixar Pier, with a new Inside Out theme, in 2019.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Southern California CityPASS |
Southern California CityPASS ($353/$324) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2018. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $44/$36. This upgraded pass is only available for purchase directly from the CityPASS website. You can also upgrade your CityPASS to add more days at participating locations:

Bring-a-Friend ticket discount – Now through September 3, Disneyland Resort annual passholders can purchase one-day park-hopper tickets for friends and family at a savings of up to 40% off the ticket booth price. This new Bring-a-Friend offer is similar to a promotion announced last week for Walt Disney World, though the terms are a bit different. Passholders can purchase these discounted tickets in person at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or at the Disney Desks at local Good Neighbor Hotels. Passholders can only purchase these tickets for days their own pass is valid, and the offer is not valid on blockout dates. The tickets are only good for admission on the date they are purchased. There is a limit of two discounted tickets per day, per passholder, and the passholder must enter the parks with their guests. The prices are as follows:

Disneyland Resort Military Discounts Ticket discounts Through December 16, 2018, active and retired U.S. military personnel (including active and retired members of the United States Coast Guard, National Guard and Reservists) or their spouses can purchase:
Disneyland tickets may be used through December 19, 2018. There are no remaining blockout dates for 2018. Active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets for themselves and up to five additional family members or friends. No more than six Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or spouse) pursuant to this offer. All tickets and options are non-transferable and must be used by December 19, 2018. Hotel discounts This offer is valid most nights from January 1 through December 19, 2018. There are no further blockout dates in 2018. Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (714) 520-7088 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30-40% off, based on room category. Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member. Photopass Discount Eligible service members can purchase the Photopass Collection for $49 plus tax through December 19, 2018.
