Disneyland Resort Update for August 19–25, 2019
Writer's note: Disneyland Resort Update continues to be fairly brief as I am embarked on an end-of-summer vacation with family and friends. Todd Pickering is helping out on today's Update, and he and Alan Dalinka continue to keep you current on Disney news via MousePlanet's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts, and, of course, the Walt Disney World Update.
As you probably know, the 2019 D23 Expo gets underway at Anaheim Convention Center this weekend, Friday, August 23, through Sunday, August 25. Last week, it sold out all ticket categories for all days. If you are not going to Expo and are planning a trip to Disneyland this weekend, be aware that there will be a whole lot of additional Disney fans in the neighborhood, probably dropping in to the parks, too! Social media over the weekend reported more than a few hiccups with the new advanced-registration Showpass system that Expo organizers rolled out this year, starting with delays in opening registration and then followed by problems with the virtual queue and for folks getting their Expo badges recognized by the system before all of the available slots filled.
Both Alan and Todd will represent MousePlanet at D23 Expo, and will share any and all breaking news as it happens in all our usual places. For Twitter updates about the Expo itself (like standby queues, crowd tips, meet-ups and the like), we have again activated our separate @MPatD23ExpoTwitter handle, to keep the news Expo-goers can use items separate from our general Disney news coverage. With the hiccups reported over the weekend, Alan and Todd will try to get our followers information that will be useful in getting the most out of the D23 Expo experience as possible.
Immediately after the Expo, all eyes shift to Walt Disney World as the Florida resort opens the second edition of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. Disneyland fans might find it interesting that the two lands aren't quite as identical as announced, and Alan will share the details from Batuu II on our Social Media channels during the media events on August 27 and 28, and then, if he is still awake enough, the debut of the 2019 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival on August 29, and even Raglan Road's Great Irish Hooley at Disney Springs on August 30. The Disneyland Update returns to its normal format after Labor Day.

Refurbishment Walls Go Up at the Disneyland Resort
Safe travels Adrienne and thanks for letting me type at the MousePlanet desk. I took two friends to Disneyland on Sunday, August 18, as part of the Bring-A-Friend promotion available for annual passholders until August 30, 2019 (check out Current Discounts and Promotions, below). The crowds were not too bad, but keep in mind that annual passes blockouts start to open up tomorrow (check out Park Schedule/Block Out Dates, below). The biggest thing of note would be the refurbishment walls we saw going up. It appears that the removal of the sidewalk curbs are going to continue to be worked on over at the Tomorrowland entrance while we wait to see if any other changes are to be made for that side of the park. This has resulted in the shutdown of the Omnibus due to the narrow roadways and drop-off spot being behind the walls. The Horseless Carriages, Fire Engine, and Horse-Drawn Streetcars are all still in operation. Over at Disney California Adventure, there are walls up around the Buena Vista stop for the out-of-commission Red Car Trolley. The walls from the construction of the yetunnamed Marvel Super Hero Land have encroached upon Guardians of the Galaxy-Mission: Breakout! Just pay attention to the signage for stand-by queues and the Fastpass queue. We can't help but wonder what the impact of the new Marvel Super Hero Land will have on the Red Car Trolleys.

Matterhorn Down to One Track
The Matterhorn Bobsleds are still down to one track as of August 18 due to a chunk of plaster falling off of the iconic original Disneyland mountain. According to the Orange County Register, on August 8, “Disneyland officials said the rockwork broke loose early Thursday morning while the Anaheim theme park was closed.” The cleaning crew found it and the best news is that no one was injured. The waterfall facing the hub is also boarded up, and the Fantasyland track is the track currently in operation. It does impact the wait times, so we highly recommend making use of Fastpass if this attraction is key to your touring plans.

Frustrations with the D23 App and Registration
The past week or two people in the parks have been huddled together and scrolling through the D23 smartphone app and excitedly marking down their favorites for this past Friday's reservation process. When Friday came, the reservations did not go live at noon, and then said it would go live at 1:00 p.m. instead. This did not happen, and it then stated that it would be good to go on Saturday at noon. While having lunch at a cafe at 11:45 this Saturday, we observed two couples. The ones with their phones and chargers laid out on the table stated to their friends that they were waiting to go live at noon to get their D23 Expo reservations. They apologized for their “crazy” but gleefully dove into the task at hand.
One of our friends, went on the app at 11:55 on Saturday ready to go and found the app faster than his browser. It took him 45 minutes to get onto the reservation site. The most frustrating thing for him was clicking on events that were listed as “open” but got him what he called “a spinning wheel of death.” The constant scrolling was also difficult. Ultimately, he thought that he was very lucky by getting one of the three Hall D23 panels he wanted and three Arena panels. He also was surprised to see that he actually got two panels that he thought he missed out on because of that “spinning wheel of death.” No shopping reservations procured. So ultimately he thought he was fairly lucky, as some of his friends received just one or no reservations. This means the stand-by queues for all panels will be quite full come this weekend. This event is very well attended and for those of you at home, we will be trying to get to as many of these panels as we can and will be sharing all of the news as it comes out.
I am looking forward to being on the same coast as Alan Dalinka and sharing the reporting duties as Adrienne enjoys her summer vacation.
The D23 smartphone app is handy for the pocket despite all of the technical difficulties. Photo by Todd Pickering.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of January 6, 2019.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Purchase with purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced-price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.
Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.
Character dining vouchers – Disneyland is no longer offering tickets or vouchers to be pre-purchased for Character Dining. You may still make reservations 60 days in advance with payment due at the restaurant.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.
The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next eight to 11 months.
