Disneyland Resort Update for August 30 – September 5, 2021
News and Views
Magic Key debuts
The Disneyland Resort began sales for its new Magic Key Pass program last week, and the roll-out was anything but smooth. Visitors who just wanted to pay in full for a new pass purchase were generally able to do so via the Disneyland website or mobile app with no problems, but lots of potential customers ran into issues trying to upgrade tickets, set up monthly payments, or obtain discounts.
Though Disney officially stated on the Disney Parks Blog, “We will not be selling Magic Key passes at the ticket booths at Disneyland Resort at this time,” and then even posted signs to that effect outside the booths, it turns out there are several situations in which a visitor will have to complete the transaction in person.
Paying in cash
If you are paying entirely in cash for your new Magic Key, you must make the purchase at a Disneyland ticket booth.
Upgrading an unused ticket to a Magic Key
If you have a wholly-unused theme park ticket, you must upgrade in person. One way to get around this is to use that ticket to make a theme park reservation and enter the park, and then use the Disneyland app to upgrade the ticket to a Magic Key. Be sure to complete the upgrade by midnight on or before the last valid day of your ticket.
Using multiple Disney Gift cards or Disney Chase Rewards redemption cards
Some people purchase Disney gift cards as a way to spread out their spending, and then combine the cards to renew their annual passport. You can combine up to $1000 in Disney gift cards onto one card, which is enough to cover the purchase price of all but the Dream passport. By doing this, customers can complete a purchase for the three lower tiers online.
But if you have more than $1000 in gift cards to put towards the $1400 Dream Key, or if you also want to redeem a Disney Chase Rewards redemption card in addition to your Disney gift card, you have to visit the ticket booth for help.
Disney Vacation Club members
Disney Vacation Club members receive a $20 discount on purchase of a new Dream, Believe or Enchant Key. The DVC discount does not apply to the Imagine Key. However, Disney Vacation Club members can only receive their discount when they purchase a new Magic Key in person at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, and must show their DVC membership card.
Know before you go
If you have a special situation that requires an in-person purchase, just know that Disney will not refund any parking fees you may pay. This is an unwelcome change in policy, so be forewarned.
Magic Key portal details new perks
New Magic Key holders can log into the Magic Key portal on the Disneyland app or website to check out the first set of perks offered to members.
The Magic Key Terrace is now open at Disney California Adventure, in the renamed Alfresco Tasting Terrace. The lounge is open to Magic Key holders and their guests, and offers a menu of snacks and adult beverages. During the initial opening the location was walk-up only, but reservations will be accepted starting September 2.
The “Magic Key Launch Experience” opens September 1 in the Starcade in Tomorrowland. This lounge promises seating, charging stations, photo opportunities and “special surprises.” The location is open daily from noon to 6 p.m. exclusively for Magic Key holders. The location will remain open through October 30.
A collectible and refillable Magic Key popcorn bucket will be available starting in September, offering $1.50 refills through November 10.
There is a PhotoPass opportunity in Fantasyland, with a “Magic Shot” of Mr. Toad.
Magic Key holders who attend Oogie Boogie Bash will have access to a special Hocus Pocus photo opportunity during the event, located near the Silly Symphony Swings.
Additional discounts and offers are posted on the Magic Key portal, and more will be announced in the coming months, including a “Magic Key Holder Month.”
5th Day Free at the Disneyland Resort
MousePlanet sponsor Get Away Today has just announced its first ticket sale of 2021, just in time for the start of Halloween Time next month.
With the all-new Avengers Campus, Halloween Time festivities, and beloved classic attractions, you'll want as much time to soak up the magic as possible. Get an Extra Day Free to experience it all when you purchase your tickets with Get Away Today.
Get an extra day free when you purchase through Get Away Today.
When you buy a 5-Day Disneyland Resort 1-Park per Day or Park Hopper Ticket, you'll just pay the 4-Day gate price. That's a $20 savings per ticket—and a whole extra day of fun for FREE!
This offer is good for both PARK HOPPER and 1-Park per Day Tickets. Plus, our Extra Day Free DISNEYLAND E-tickets allow you to skip the line and go straight to the ticket booth. With so much to do and see, our Extra Day Free E-Tickets allow you to experience it all!
The Extra Day Free ticket is also a great bridge for vacation planners who are considering upgrading their tickets to a Magic Key. You'll get the the full value of a 5-day ticket applied to whichever Magic Key you upgrade to, but only pay the 4-day price. Even better, you can make park reservations for the five days of the ticket without worrying about blockout dates, then upgrade on the last day of use.
Terms and conditions apply. To enter a theme park, you will need a park reservation and valid admission for that park- for each day you’d like to visit. Please note that your Disneyland E-tickets will expire 13 days after the first day of use.
Theme park reservations can be made up to 120 days prior to travel on a rolling basis. If traveling within 120 days, it is recommended that you make your theme park reservations immediately after purchasing your admission. Visit the Get Away Today website for complete details.
Pluto's Pumpkin Pursuit
If your family is a fan of the Egg-Stravaganza event at the Disneyland Resort, you'll love this just-announced Halloween event. Pluto's Pumpkin Pursuit will send you on a hunt around Downtown Disney to find a series of decorative pumpkins hidden around the district.
These Halloween mugs appear to be the reward for completing Pluto's pursuit. Photo courtesy Disney.
Pumpkin hunters first purchase a special game board and stickers ($9.99) to help locate the gourds, then place the stickers on the corresponding spots on the board to earn a “spooky surprise.” We're going to go on a limb and assume the surprise is one of the four Halloween drink tumblers pictured on the event website.
The game boards are sold at World of Disney, Disney’s Pin Traders, Disney Home, The Disney Dress Shop and WonderGround Gallery, and the surprise can be redeemed at World of Disney or near Disney’s Pin Traders.
The event runs September 9 through October 31, or while supplies last.
New merchandise limit
A new merchandise policy went into effect at the Disneyland Resort this week, restricting the quantity of merchandise shoppers can purchase at a time. Disney has long limited sales of limited-edition merchandise to 2 of each item per person, with purchases of open edition items capped at 10 per person.
Under this new policy, holiday merchandise is included in the 2-per-person limit, which includes the new Halloween collection released earlier this month. Open edition items are now limited to 5 per person.
A Disneyland spokesperson said of this change, “Our goal is to ensure that more guests have the opportunity to take home treasured keepsakes and lasting tangible memories from their visit to the Disneyland Resort.”
There may be an additional reason for the change. Managers at one store told their cast member the new policy was also due to merchandise shortages caused by delays in shipments from overseas manufacturers.
The Walt Disney World Resort has also changed their policy, and is limiting sales of almost all merchandise to two items per person.
We found the merchandise limits on the ShopDisney website to be wildly inconsistent. Some basic souvenir items like baseball caps and autograph books are limited to 10 per person, but the very same Halloween merchandise which is limited to two or five per person in the theme parks is available online with no limit at all.

- Disneyland After Dark: Star Wars Nite – postponed from Thursday, August 27, 2020. Visitors who had already purchased a ticket to the sold-out event will automatically receive a ticket for the rescheduled event once a date is selected. However, anyone who purchased a ticket and prefers a refund can call (714) 781-4636 to request one.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 2020.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Everyone
Purchase with purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced-price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.
Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.
Legacy Annual Passholders
After ended the former annual passholder program and creating the Legacy Passholder designation earlier this year, the Disneyland Resort said it would continue some passholder benefits for Legacy Passholders, including merchandise and food & beverage discounts at participating shops, until a new program is announced. At press time, the discount has been extended through May 31, 2020, but we expect that will be extended even further.
Legacy Passholders must show a digital discount ticket on their Disneyland app along with their physical passport and valid photo ID to receive any applicable food or merchandise benefits, or to access passholder-only opportunities.
Disney will automatically uploaded this digital discount ticket to the accounts of passholders who had previously linked their ticket to their Disneyland app. Passholders who had not previously linked their ticket to the Disneyland app must now do so, using a ticket code that was sent to them via email in March.
If you had already linked your ticket but the digital discount ticket does not appear on your account, contact Passholder Member Services at (714) 781-4567 or use the chat feature in the Disneyland app for assistance.
Visit the Legacy Annual Passholder discount page for specific details and exclusions.
