Navigating Our Disneyland Resort Update

Recently, we soft launched a new format for the Disneyland Resort Update. The content categories and their order remain relatively the same, but now with an enhanced, refreshed look. The new light green button at the top of the Update lets readers quickly skip ahead (jumping over introductory comments like this) by way of a drop-down menu. Clicking on a major section heading, highlighted in light green will take you to the next one with a click, and the last one will take you back to the top. Each of the News items highlighted in light blue will do likewise. There are some other format changes you'll find along the way, and a few more may come along in future weeks. If you encounter an error or problem, please let us know, including as much detail as you can about the error (such as your browser and operating system).

Writer's note: The Disneyland Resort Update will be a fairly brief read for the next few weeks as I embark on an end-of-summer vacation with family and friends. In my absence, Alan Dalinka and Todd Pickering will continue to keep you current on Disney news via MousePlanet's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts, and the weekly Walt Disney World Update. Alan and Todd will also represent MousePlanet at the upcoming D23 Expo, and will share any and all breaking news as it happens.

Immediately after the Expo, all eyes shift to Walt Disney World as the Florida resort opens the second edition of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. Disneyland fans might find it interesting that the two lands aren't quite as identical as announced, and Alan is quite ready to share the details from Batuu II. The Disneyland Update will return to its normal format after Labor Day.

Disneyland celebrates Haunted Mansion 50th Anniversary

Disneyland this week commemorates the 50th anniversary of the iconic Haunted Mansion attraction. Although the big day is officially on Friday, August 9, Disneyland will first host two after-hours events on Wednesday and Thursday nights to kick off the celebration.

Tickets are still available for the two The Haunted Mansion: Celebrating 50 Years of Retirement Unliving events scheduled for August 7–8 and August 8–9, 2019. Tickets are $299 per person. Each party begins with event sign-in on day 1, and a midnight-to-4:00 a.m. party on day 2.

This is primarily a merchandise special event, with over 200 collectible items—or “Estate Merchandise”—created for the event. Guests who registered when tickets went on sale earlier this year were given the opportunity to reserve the limited edition items prior to this week; anyone who registers this week can shop from the remaining inventory at the event.

Haunted Mansion Anniversary merchandise will also be offered for sale at Disneyland and Walt Disney World following the event, and the Disney Parks Blog posted a roundup of some of the items expected to be available starting Friday.

For those visiting Disneyland on Friday, look for a special photo opportunity around the Haunted Mansion to commemorate the anniversary.

Here we glow again

Disneyland's beloved, iconic, and dated Main Street Electrical Parade has returned for another “limited engagement” to end the summer season, and one needs look no further than the packed parade route to see that this show still has an amazing ability to enchant generations of Disney fans.

The Disney Parks Blog hosted a live stream of the parade's return to Disneyland, and you can watch the performance in its entirety below. Along with the return of the parade itself, Disney also brought back some popular treats introduced during the parade's last “limited engagement,” including fan-favorite Fantasia ice cream at Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor. The blend of cherry, banana, and pistachio is a bite of nostalgia for Disneyland fans, and is flavor now offered by the scoop or as a sundae.

The Main Street Electrical Parade is scheduled through September 30, 2019.

Passholders save 40% during Pop-Up Disney's final month

Pop-Up Disney! A Mickey Celebration is scheduled to close on September 2, and Disney is offering a 40% discount to get annual passholders in the door during the final month of operation.

Pop-Up Disney is a made-for-Instagram installation created and opened in April as part of Disney's 90th anniversary, “World's Biggest Mouse Party.” The former ESPN Zone was converted into a series of picture-perfect themed rooms inspired by Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

Tickets are $30 for weekdays (Monday through Thursday) before 4:00 p.m., or $35 per person all other times. The venue is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. When you order your tickets, you pick the date and time you wish to visit, with tickets sold in 10-minute intervals. The final reservation is for 8:50 p.m. each night. The retail store remains open until 11:00 p.m. You purchase tickets through the event website—the venue does not sell tickets on site.

Annual passholders can save 40% off tickets by using code POPUPPASSHOLDER27 at checkout.

Two more Oogie Boogie Bashes sell out

Sales of tickets to the new Oogie Boogie Bash event are starting to pick up, and now three dates have sold out—including Halloween Night.

The after-hours event debuts at Disney California Adventure this year, replacing the popular Mickey's Halloween Party at Disneyland. Oogie Boogie Bash includes trick-or-treat stations, themed entertainment, the debut of the Frightfully Fun Parade and Ride of the Headless Horseman at Disney California Adventure, plus an all-new Halloween edition of the World of Color show.

Maleficent is one of the stars of the all-new Halloween version of World of Color, exclusively presented during Oogie Boogie Bash at Disney California Adventure. Photo © Disney.

The party takes place on 20 nights in September and October, and requires a separate event ticket to attend. Three dates are now sold out, and additional nights will follow as vacation planners finalize their selections and book their tickets.

  • Sold out – September 26, 29; October 31
  • Available – September 17, 19, 22, 24; October 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 13, 15, 17, 20, 22, 24, 27, 29

Although it's hard to know how sales for this new event will be in its first year, all nights for last year's Halloween Party event nights sold out by September 25.

Tickets for Oogie Boogie Bash start at $110. You can buy tickets from the Disneyland website, by calling (714) 781-4636, or in person at a Disneyland Resort ticket booth.

But what happens if you had your heart (and vacation plans) set on attending a specific, sold-out night? Before you turn to Craigslist, StubHub, or eBay (all of which bring with them the very high risk of being defrauded), here are official ways you may still be able to buy legitimate party tickets directly from Disney:

  • Call the Disneyland Resort and order tickets by phone – a limited number of tickets may be available by phone for events that are sold out on line. Call (714) 781-4636 to purchase by phone. Expect to wait on hold for at least 10 minutes.
  • Visit Disneyland and purchase tickets in person – a limited number of tickets may be available at the Disneyland ticket booths for events that are sold out on line. However, if you tried to purchase tickets by phone and the night you wanted was sold out, they will not be available at the ticket booths.
  • Disneyland Resort Hotels – if you are a guest staying at one of the three Disney-owned hotels (Disneyland Hotel, Paradise Pier Hotel, or Grand Californian Hotel), check with your hotel desk the morning of the event to see if they have tickets available for purchase. In past years, a small number of tickets were reserved for Disneyland Resort Hotel guests, and were released for sale at 5:30 a.m. the morning of each party. Officially, these tickets are intended only for concierge-level guests, but we've heard conflicting stories about that, and it seems some guests in standard rooms have been allowed to buy the tickets as well. If you're already staying on property, it doesn't hurt to ask. These tickets sell out very quickly, so don't wait until the party starts to try to make your purchase.
  • Friends or family – if friends/family already have tickets, they may be able to purchase additional tickets the day of the party. Again, a small number of tickets are reserved for same-day sales to help accommodate ticket holders who may have miscounted how many they need, or who had friends/family unexpectedly join them. As with the tickets reserved for hotel guests, these are very limited, and go on sale as soon as the ticket booths open in the morning. If at all possible, get there first thing in the morning to increase your chance of getting tickets. You must have the other event tickets with you the cast member needs to see them, and cannot just trust your word that “so-and-so already has tickets.”

Come CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanet

Registration is now officially open for the 2019 CHOC Walk in the Park, to be held Sunday, August 11 at the Disneyland Resort.

Team MousePlanet will return for our 12th consecutive walk to support Children's Hospital Orange County. Thanks to the efforts and generosity of our readers, Team MousePlanet has raised over $75,000 for CHOC since 2008. We invite MousePlanet readers, friends, and family members to join our team for the event.

Late Registration – walkers pay a fee of $95 at the time of registration to secure their place at the walk.

Why Join Team MousePlanet?

COMMUNITY! Walking with Team MousePlanet is a great way to spend a morning with MousePlanet staff and readers, all while raising money for a great cause. Stay after the walk and enjoy Disneyland with your fellow Disney fans.

CONVENIENCE! If you register during Early registration and meet your fundraising goal, Team MousePlanet will handle check-in for you. No need to drive to check in the week before the walk to collect your wristband and T-shirt. You need only meet us in Downtown Disney the morning of the walk to collect your goodies, then head right into Disneyland to start the walk.

If you prefer to have your shirt and wristband before the walk (some people like to personalize them), there is an option to have those items shipped to you.

The deadline to join Team MousePlanet and meet the fundraising requirement in order for us to handle check-in for walkers is Thursday, August 8. We still welcome those who register after this date, but they must handle their own check-in.

In addition to helping support an outstanding local charity, one of the benefits of participating in the CHOC Walk is the opportunity to purchase specially priced Disneyland tickets to use in the weeks after the walk. Walkers who meet the fund-raising minimum can purchase a 1-Day 1-Park Disneyland Resort ticket for $67 (reg. $122 to 149), or a Disneyland Resort 1-Day Park Hopper ticket for $93 (reg. $172 to 199). This is a discount of up to $106 off the ticket booth price of these tickets.

The tickets can ONLY be purchased by registered walkers in person at the Disneyland Resort on the day of the walk. You must present your CHOC Walk in the Park wristband to a Disneyland Resort Ticket Booth to purchase the discounted tickets.

NEW FOR 2019: A maximum of one ticket may be purchased per wristband.

The tickets are valid starting Sunday, August 11, 2019, and must be used by September 10, 2019. The tickets are not valid August 31 through September 3, 2019.

Are you ready to CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanet? It's easy to sign up—just visit our team page.

This and That…

…The popular Lamplight Lounge at Disney California Adventure debuted a new weekend brunch offering in May, and last week expanded brunch service to Fridays as well. Brunch is available from 8:15 a.m. to noon. Book reservations online up to 60 days in advance.

…There seems to have been another change in the soft drink refill policy at scatter-service restaurants like Rancho del Zocalo, Alien Pizza Planet, and Plaza Inn. Cast members tell us that free refills were discontinued as of July 17, the same time a new refillable annual passholder tumbler was released. Refills now cost 99 cents if you have the tumbler (which is sold out Resort-wide). The cast members we spoke with said they aren't sure if this is a permanent change or just a test, and note the refillable tumbler program ends September 5.

…Splitsville in Downtown Disney is offering Disneyland annual passholders a special rate of $10 per person for bowling through the end of August. The offer is valid from opening to 4:00 p.m. each day, and includes shoe rental. The length of bowling session is based on the number of people in the party – a group of two gets one hour on the lanes, while a group of 8 gets up to two hours.

…Disney's Adventure Awaits Sweepstakes is offering one lucky winner a Disneyland vacation. The winner and their three guests will receive airfare, hotel accommodations, Disneyland admission tickets, a TIP tour guide, and more. Enter daily through August 15 for your chance to win.

…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We'll also include a fun bonus, such as an Eye Spy or a trivia question. To subscribe to our free newsletter, just enter your email in the box below.

  • Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance – opens Friday, January 17, 2020.
  • Dapper Day Spring Outing (unofficial event) – Sunday, April 19. More information on the event website.
  • Grad Nites – May 8, 9, 15, 16, 20, 26, 27, 29, and 30; June 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 12, and 13

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions

Disneyland prices as of January 6, 2019.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Everyone

Purchase with purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced-price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.

Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.

Character dining vouchers – Disneyland is no longer offering tickets or vouchers to be pre-purchased for Character Dining. You may still make reservations 60 days in advance with payment due at the restaurant.

  • Disney Military Promotional 4-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $198 each (an increase of $10 from the 2018 offer)

Disneyland tickets may be used through December 18, 2019, excluding the spring break blockout of April 14–22, 2019.

Hotel discounts

Military discounts are valid for stays most nights from January 1 through December 19, 2019. Travel must be completed by December 20, 2019.

Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member.

Photopass Discount

Eligible service members can purchase the Photopass Collection for $49 plus tax through December 21, 2019. The package includes digital downloads of all PhotoPass photos in the user's account when they redeem the voucher; a voucher for a dining print package, and a Disneyland photo disc with 350 stock photos from around the Disneyland Resort.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.

Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.

The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next eight to 11 months.
