New blockout day pass gives SoCal passholders another chance to see the Main Street Electrical Parade
The “encore engagement” of the Main Street Electrical Parade scheduled to end on Sunday, August 20, which happens to be the final day of the summer blockout season for Southern California and Southern California Select annual passports. The passes are not valid again until Monday, August 21, meaning holders of the two lowest-tier APs don't have the chance to see the parade one final time before it glows away… for however long it's going away this time.

But Disneyland announced this weekend that it has brought back the Blockout Day pass for the final two weeks of the parade's scheduled run, giving passholders the opportunity—for a price—to visit Disneyland before August 20. These blockout tickets are one-day park hopper tickets that offer admission to both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. They are $79 per passholder, and can only be used in conjunction with an annual pass (no buying them for non-passholder family and friends). A regular one-day park hopper ticket runs up to $165 per adult.

During the final two weeks of the run, all passholders are eligible for additional discounts on certain Main Street Electrical Parade products, food items, and experiences:
- An additional 10% off MSEP merchandise from the Disneyana shop (in addition to the regular AP discount)
- Buy one, get one free MSEP desserts and treats at Jolly Holiday Bakery Café and Market House.
- An additional 10% off the MSEP parade viewing package at Aladdin's Oasis.
The tickets are not available online, and must be purchased by phone (714-781-7277) or in person at the Disneyland ticket booths. Valid annual passport required to purchase and use the blockout day ticket.
Disney still won't comment on the planned future for the 45-year-old production, but this move to temporarily offer the previously discontinued blockout pass and discount remaining inventory of the current MSEP merchandise is a good sign that there are no immediate plans to extend the parade's run at Disneyland again this year.
Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire coming to Downtown Disney
Downtown Disney's recent decision not to renew the leases for Build-a-Bear and Ridemakerz makes a bit more sense this week, following the announcement that Lucasfilm and ILMxLab are collaborating with entertainment company The Void to develop a new “hyper-reality experience” called Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire. The new attraction is slated to open in Downtown Disney in time for the holiday season, with a second location opening in Florida's Disney Springs.

The Disney Parks Blog article was frustratingly light on details, and the press release issued jointly by the three partner companies provided little additional substance: “Guests will move freely throughout the untethered, social, and multi-sensory experience as they interact and engage with friends, family and Star Wars characters.”
Curtis Hickman, co-founder and chief creative officer at The Void, said, “A truly transformative experience is so much more than what you see with your eyes; it's what you hear, feel, touch, and even smell.”
The Void's most recent public project, a Ghostbusters experience now open in New York, may offer some insight into what is planned for the Star Wars project. Participants don a virtual reality headset and a backpack, and head into a space to battle spectral scoundrels, including the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man, with specially-designed virtual weapons. The Ghostbusters: Dimension is a timed game, and the whole experience lasts about 15 minutes. The cost is a steep $50 per person at the New York location, which is part of a larger Ghostbusters experience at Madame Tussaud's, and includes admission to the museum. A second Ghostbusters: Dimension installation in Lindon, Utah, charges $25. Participants must also be 10 years old and 48″ tall to participate in the Ghostbusters offering, which could be a big disappointment for younger Star Wars fans at the Disney properties.

Disneyland told the Orange County Register that the three tenants were closing to make room for more dining options in Downtown Disney, and it's unclear if the new Star Wars offering will take over the entire building, or if it will include a dining component. We also don't know if this is intended as a permanent offering, or a limited-time promotion intended to bring a Star Wars experience to the Disneyland Resort now, in advance of the 2019 opening of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge.
Of course, the very nature of virtual reality lends itself to endless revision, and The Void may someday follow up Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire with other offerings based on Disney movies and properties. As Thomas Smith said on the Disney Parks Blog, “we'll have many more details to share in the future.”
General Admission tickets on sale for this week's Taste of Downtown Disney District
The 10th annual Taste of Downtown Disney District, a fund raiser for CHOC Children's Hospital, is this Thursday, August 10, at the Disneyland Resort.

General admission tickets are now available for the event. Three of the four VIP experiences have sold out, but tickets are still available for the AMC Disney Film Magic package:
General Admission ($125 per person) – This progressive experience tours guests through a reception of culinary creations and select pairings at locations including, AMC Theaters, Catal Restaurant & Uva Bar, Earl of Sandwich, ESPN Zone restaurant, Ghirardelli Chocolate, Jamba Juice, La Brea Bakery Café, Naples Ristorante e Pizzeria, Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen, Starbucks, Tortilla Jo's and WonderGround Gallery.

This and that…
…We noted last week that the River Belle Terrace is scheduled to close September 5 for refurbishment. It looks like this is another major refurbishment for the restaurant, as Disney has filed permits to reconfigure the kitchen and the dining room, to include new interior walls. Disney has not published the reopening date for the restaurant, but the Disneyland website indicates the restaurant will be shuttered until at least November 16.
Due to the refurbishment, Fantasmic dining packages will be offered at Cafe Orleans from September 5 through November 16. Disney will open reservations for this new option on August 20. Menu details are not available, but the three-course meal is $45 for adults, $25 for children ages 3 to 9.
…Disney California Adventure will close at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 14 for an annual cast member recognition event.

2017
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 19–20. Expect large attendance levels October 19–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- Nevada Day – October 28. Nevada schools are closed on Friday, October 28 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

2017 Military Salute Offer Disney released details of its 2017 Military Salute offer for Disneyland and Walt Disney World last October, and the tickets are valid January 1 through April 8 and April 24 through December 19, 2017. At the time we first shared details of the offer, we did not know about (or Disney had not announced) a special PhotoPass promotion also available to military personnel. Through December 19, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel who are eligible for the Military Salute offer can also purchase the Disney PhotoPass Collection for $49, a discount of 50% over the usual $99 price. The Disney PhotoPass Collection includes digital downloads of all available PhotoPass photos linked to your account, a voucher for a dining print package and a Disneyland Resort Gallery Disc with 350 high-resolution professional photos from around Disneyland Resort. Southern California CityPASS |
Southern California CityPASS ($346/$314) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2017. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $42/$34. This upgraded pass is only available for purchase directly from the CityPASS website. You can also upgrade your CityPASS to add more days at participating locations:

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco. Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – These package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants.
