The Most Wonderful Week, and park reservation reminders
The week after Thanksgiving is my favorite week at the Disneyland Resort during the holidays, and it was always what I would recommend to friends and family who wanted to visit during the season but avoid the crowds. Almost all of the decorations are in place throughout the resort, the holiday entertainment is scheduled, and one-day ticket prices are the lowest they’ll be before New Years.
Things have definitely changed since the pandemic, and this coming week may not be as light as it once was. At press time there were no more reservations available for Magic Key holders this week, though most other ticket types have full availability. The one exception is the special 3-day ticket available to Disney+ subscribers. There are no reservations available for that ticket on Tuesday, December 3, the only date so far to reach capacity. This is a good reminder that if you’ve already purchased that ticket, you should make your theme park reservations for it as soon as possible, before other days fill up.
Speaking of theme park reservations, I noticed some other dates have reached capacity. At press time, there were no reservations available for standard theme park tickets at Disneyland park on December 25, or at Disney California Adventure on December 30. Availability changes as people make and modify their plans, so it’s not that these days are sold out for good, but it’s a sign that the parks are nearing capacity for the least-wonderful week of the year, the period between Christmas and New Years.
Haunted Mansion reopens its grounds
Last week Disney removed the work walls surrounding the Haunted Mansion to reveal the attraction’s expanded gardens and extended queue. With this reopening of the larger physical queue, Disney is no longer using a virtual queue for the attraction. As of last week, the Haunted Mansion is once again part of the Lightning Lane network, and is one of the attractions included with the Lightning Lane Premier pass.
The lengthy renovation was part of a larger project to rework pedestrian flow through and around New Orleans Square. Magnolia Park opened last month, and with last week’s unveiling we got our first look at the new home of the fountain which was relocated from its former location outside the Haunted Mansion queue. Disney also shared photos of new statues and landscaping around the grounds of the Mansion.
Now only is the new outdoor queue larger, it is also fully wheelchair-accessible right into the Haunted Mansion entrance. Once a visitor who uses a wheelchair or other mobility device completes their ride, they now exit the attraction through a new hallway, which leads to an elevator returning the guests to the mortal world. This is a much better solution than simply sending the guests back through the “Stretching Room,” and trying to navigate the crowds entering the attraction.
Here’s a look at the hallway that was constructed to access to ADA elevator in the Haunted Mansion. A portrait of Sally hung in the elevator reminds us to “hurry back, hurry back”. pic.twitter.com/D1NnS5INoi

Disney revealed the name of the new, yet-to-open gift shop at the attraction’s main exit. Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond will open later this winter, and carry a full range of Haunted Mansion and Nightmare Before Christmas merchandise. The walls came down from around that shop two weeks ago, and it looks much larger in person than it did from the concept art. In fact, one of our readers nicknamed it “Madame Leota’s She Shed,” and personally I love it.
Candlelight tips and tricks
Disneyland’s Candlelight Processional takes place this Saturday and Sunday, December 7 and 8. Started by Walt Disney in 1958 as a community appreciation event, the show features a candlelight choir made up of cast members and community choir members, all accompanied by the Disneyland orchestra. Celebrity guest narrators read the Christmas story in between songs.
After trying a few times to follow in Walt Disney World’s footsteps to make this a larger public offering with dining packages and reserved viewing, Disneyland treats Candlelight as a private event that just happens to take place in the middle of an operating theme park during business hours. Invited guests include community and civic leaders, as well as media and Club 33 members, who watch the performance from a small seating area in Town Square.
The identity of the celebrity narrator used to be known a few weeks in advance, but in recent years it’s been a surprise right up until the pre-show sound check. Recent hosts have come from a variety of Disney projects, including Sterling K. Brown (2021), Lin Manuel Miranda (2019), Chris Pratt (2018), and Chris Hemsworth (2017). Actress Brie Larson narrated the 2023 event.
It’s very difficult for those without an invitation to get a perfect view of the show without devoting an entire day to saving a spot on Main Street, U.S.A.. Disney has not released any details about seating—nor do we expect them to—so the best we can do here is present our usual advice, and recommend that you arrive as early as possible to check for updates with the cast members on the street.
Event schedule
There are two performances each day. The following is our best estimate of the schedule for Saturday and Sunday based on previous years. This information is unofficial, and subject to change:
- 4:45 p.m. – seating of invited guests begins for the first performance.
- 5:20 p.m. – the first processional begins.
- 5:30 p.m. – the first ceremony begins at Town Square.
- 7:15 p.m. – seating of invited guests begins for the second performance.
- 7:35 p.m. – the second processional begins.
- 7:45 p.m. – the second ceremony begins at Town Square.
Standby viewing
You do have some options if you want to view the ceremony. Standby viewing is very limited, and is on a first-come, first-served basis. In past years very limited bench seating has been available in Town Square; with standing room-only locations near City Hall, the Opera House, and open spaces behind the seating area in Town Square. Viewing areas for the 5:30 p.m. performance generally open at park opening (8 a.m. each day), but viewing areas on the east side of Main Street may not be available until after the 3:15 p.m. “A Christmas Fantasy” parade passes that location. Again, this changes year to year, and it’s best to talk to the cast members on the street that day for the current operational plan.
In past years cast members have required all guests to leave the viewing area after the first performance has concluded, to make room for guests who have waited for the second show. There is usually a line for the 7:45 p.m. performance that forms forms at the south end of Main Street as soon as the 5:20 p.m. processional has passed, but again – talk to the cast members. A special viewing area for guests who use wheelchairs is usually provided on the east side of the viewing area, outside of the Opera House – check with cast members for the current location.
Enjoy the processional
If you don’t want to devote the day to saving the perfect spot on Main Street, you can still enjoy the processional down Main Street, U.S.A. and hear the performers sing as they walk to the stage. Just grab an open spot along the curb on Main Street, between the Holiday Shoppe and the Christmas tree. The first processional begins at 5:20 p.m., and the second at 7:35 p.m.
Operational effects
The performances on Saturday and Sunday affect numerous stores and attractions in the Town Square area. Based on prior year schedules, expect changes to the entertainment schedule, and attraction, food, and store closures to be in effect both days:
- A Christmas Fantasy Parade – performances at 12:45 and 3:15 p.m.
- “it’s a small world” Holiday Lighting – 4:45 p.m.
- Main Street, U.S.A. Holiday Tree Lighting – 4:50 p.m.
- Wintertime Enchantment at Sleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle – 7:00 p.m.
- “Believe… In Holiday Magic” Fireworks Spectacular – 9:30 p.m.
- Main Street Vehicles – may be closed all day.
- Disneyland Railroad – closed 3:00 to 10:00 p.m.
- The Mad Hatter on Main Street – closed 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.
- The Disney Gallery – closed 4:45 to 9:00 p.m.
Traffic flow
Disneyland uses backstage passageways behind Main Street, U.S.A. to help with traffic flow during the evening. If you don’t need to be on Main Street between 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., take advantage of lighter crowds throughout the rest of the park to enjoy shorter wait times on popular rides.
Registration opens for Halloween Half Marathon Weekend
Club runDisney members had their chance last week, and now general registration for the 2025 Disneyland Halloween Half Marathon weekend begins this Tuesday, December 3 at 7:00 AM PT | 10:00 AM ET.
The second Halloween-themed event takes place September 4-7, 2025 and includes a variety of events for adults and children. The 2025 event is based on the Disney villains, with each race tied to a different character. Prices for all events are up $10 from the January races.
Event | Date | Price |
Disneyland Yoga | September 4, 2025 | $140 |
Disneyland Halloween 5K | September 5, 2025 | $130 |
Disneyland Halloween 10K | September 6, 2025 | $185 |
runDisney Kids Races | September 6, 2025 | $45 each |
Disneyland Halloween Half Marathon | September 7, 2025 | $270 |
Chills & Thrills Challenge | September 6-7, 2025 | $450 |
runDisney Health and Fitness Expo | September 4-6, 2025 | No Charge |
To register, visit the runDisney website. As always, we recommend that you are fully prepared with all of your information before registration opens. Make sure you’re already logged into your Disney account, and have all of the details for each person you are trying to register, including legal name, home and email addresses, date of birth, pace time and shirt size. If you need to submit a proof of time for an event, you can do that after you register, so don’t take time to do it when you first register.
runDisney published a video last year which gives tips for how to register, but it doesn’t address concerns about how to ensure you get into all of your events if you’re trying to register for multiple races, or how best to register for multiple people (including minors).
Based on my own personal experience with this, it’s best to have every adult handle their own registrations, because entries are not confirmed until you finish and pay. It’s not uncommon to get to checkout and find one or more events have sold out while you were adding your spouse, friends and children.
This and That…
…Though not expected to officially open until this Friday, the D-Lander shop soft-opened last week just in time for Black Friday. The new store is on the west side of Downtown Disney. The neighboring Avengers Reserve store is also scheduled to open on December 6, though we might see a soft opening earlier in the week as well.
…Pandora Jewelry will release a new Pandora x Disney Holiday collection this weekend, and customers can get their purchases personalized during special events on Saturday and Sunday. Visit the event website for details.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Tickets, Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of October 9, 2024.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.
