January 2017 preview
For those already looking ahead to the new year, we have some information about early January events and schedule notes.
January 3 is the final day to ride the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure, before the ride closes for conversion to a Guardians of the Galaxy theme.
The Holidays at the Disneyland Resort promotion officially runs through January 8. As the celebration winds down, Disney California Adventure hosts a Three Kings Day event January 5–8, with special entertainment, crafts and food offerings.
January 8th is the last chance this season to see:
- A Christmas Fantasy Parade
- Paint the Night parade
- Believe… In Holiday Magic Fireworks
- World of Color – Season of Light
- Disney Festival of Holidays
- Disney Viva Navidad Street Parade
- Princess Elena's Musical Grand Arrival
The post-holiday refurbishments begin on January 9, when the Jingle Cruise and Haunted Mansion Holiday close to remove their holiday overlays. The Pioneer Merchantile store also closes in Frontierland for refurbishment.
The end date for the two ride refurbishments has not been published, but at least one should be finished before “it's a small world” closes on January 22 for the removal of its overlay.
Over at Disney California Adventure, Grizzly River Run closes January 9 through February 14 for seasonal refurbishment.

The post-holiday entertainment schedule is still in flux, with the official return of the Main Street Electrical Parade not yet announced. What has been announced so far is that the “Fantasy in the Sky” fireworks are back on the schedule as of Friday, January 13, with one nightly performance Fridays through Sundays.
The World of Color show remains on the DCA calendar from January 9 on, and we expect it will be the “original” version presented once the 60th Anniversary version ended in September.
We are still waiting to hear what Disney's plans are for the return of the Main Street Electrical Parade, and for the return of Mickey's Soundsational Parade at Disneyland and the Pixar Play Parade at Disney California Adventure. There are no parades on the schedule for either park from January 9–15, which is as far as the entertainment schedule is posted as of this writing.
The 2017 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend is January 12–15, so expect extra crowding that holiday weekend due to the runDisney contingent coming to town for the race events.
Ready, Set, Register for the 2017 Disneyland Half Marathon weekend
Advance registration for annual passholders and Disney Vacation Club members opens this Thursday, December 8, for the 2017 Disneyland Half Marathon, scheduled for August 31 through September 2, 2017. If this seems really early to you, it is—Disney is opening registration for the 2017 event nearly two months earlier than it did for its 2016 event. This extra early registration continues for all runDisney races througout the 2017 season, with Disney asking runners to commit (and pay) nearly a year in advance to ensure a place at the starting line.
Surprisingly, the registration dates have not been posted on the main runDisney website, but were published to the runDisney Facebook page before Thanksgiving. Runners who don't follow runDisney via social media likely missed the announcement, and those who don't otherwise read updates like this may not realize that advance registration is open until it sells out.
The very early registration may be the reason runDisney has not yet announced a theme for the 2017 event, as it did before registration opened for the 2016 races. For some runners, knowing the theme in advance helped them decide whether they wanted to register or sit out the race.
It's also interesting to note that Disney has actually dropped the price of both the Dumbo Double Dare Challenge and the Disneyland Half Marathon races back to their 2015 levels, and left the price of the shorter races unchanged. With eight runDisney race weekends held annually between Disneyland and Walt Disney World, plus the new Disneyland Paris event and the Virtual Running Shorts series, Disney seems to have found the upper edge of its pricing range for the existing market.
Despite the extra early registration and the lack of theme information, runners who know they definitely want to participate in the 2017 event should go ahead and take advantage of the Annual Passholder or Disney Vacation Club registration links to secure their spot on Thursday, and just avoid whatever registration system snafus may befall the runDisney system next week.
If you are a Walt Disney World or Disneyland Resort annual passholder, our advice is to use the links from those pages to register for the event. While Disney Vacation Club members also have access to early registration, the DVC webmasters don't always have the link posted as quickly as they could. …Freshly made, hand-pulled candy canes are available this week at Disneyland's Candy Palace on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and at Trolley Treats in Disney California Adventure on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Even if you don't stand in line for a candy cane at Disneyland, be sure to look for the PhotoPass photographers with the custom photo prop for a special photo opportunity.

- House of Blues Anaheim – closed. The 23,000-square-foot restaurant and concert venue is slated for demolition.
- Pandora Jewelry – under construction in Downtown Disney, and scheduled to open in late 2016

Disneyland Resort Hotels

Grand Californian Hotel Pools – Closed January 3 through spring 2017, All three of the pools at the hotel will be closed for refurbishment, including the Redwood Pool and water slide, the Fountain Pool, and the Mariposa Pool. The cabanas will also close during this time. The closure is not currently listed on the hotel's website. During the refurbishment, which is expected to last at least through March, people staying at the Grand Californian Hotel can use the pool facilities at the Disneyland Hotel or Paradise Pier Hotel.

- 2017 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend – January 12–15, 2017. Registration is still open for the 10K and Half Marathon events. All other race distances are sold out through runDisney, but charities like Team Muscle Makers have space available.
- “Use it or lose it” weekend – January 28–29, 2017. Our designation for the final weekend of January, which marks the deadline for cast members, community groups, and Club 33 members to use their remaining complementary admission tickets from the 2016 allocation.
- Dapper Day Spring Outing to Disneyland (unofficial event) – Sunday, April 23. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
- 2017 Grad Nites: May 5, 6, 10, 17, 19, 20, 24, 30 and 31; June 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 10, 14, 16 and 17.
- 2017 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 11–14, 2017. Registration opens September 20, 2016.
- D23 Expo – July 14–16, 2017. Tickets are now on sale through the official D23 website.
- Dapper Day Fall Outing to Disneyland (unofficial event) – Sunday, November 5. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Disney California Adventure Park Fun Pass Technically not an annual pass, this Costco-exclusive is valid only at Disney California Adventure for 365 days after activation. The pass costs $329.99, the same price as the existing Disney Southern California Select Passport that also includes admission to Disneyland. The new Costco pass comes with 19 blockout dates during the remainder of 2016, and 41 blockout dates through December 1, 2017. Those 60 combined blockout dates most closely resemble those of the existing Deluxe Annual Passport, and cover the peak Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year travel periods, plus most holiday weekends and every Saturday between March 13 and August 19. 2016 – 2017 blockout dates:
The Disney California Adventure Park Fun Pass also includes the same 10 percent merchandise and food discount as offered with the Southern California Select Passport. Like that pass, the new DCA pass does not include parking, nor is there an option to add a parking pass onto this ticket. The new Fun Pass also includes a Disney collector pin featuring Ariel and the DCA logo. If you're looking to buy this as a holiday gift, note that the pass expires one year after the first use, and the first use must be by December 1, 2016. That doesn't necessarily rule it out as a stocking stuffer, but Christmas will have to come very early so your recipient can activate the pass before the deadline. The pass is available only at Costco stores and from Costco.com. This is not a member-exclusive item, and in our test, the Costco website did not add a surcharge when the pass was purchased by a non-member. The pass is mailed in five to seven business days, though a two-day shipping option is available at an added charge. California residents can take advantage of the monthly payment plan when purchasing any but the Premier Annual Passport.

Southern California CityPASS |
2016 Southern California CityPASS ($329/$294) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2016. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $38/$30. This upgraded pass is only available for purchase directly from the CityPASS website. You can also upgrade your CityPASS to add more days at participating locations:

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks.
