Food & Wine Festival returns; T Party ends
It's been five years since Disney unexpectedly pulled the plug on the Food & Wine Weekends at Disney California Adventure park, cancelling the 2011 event after dates had already been announced. At the time, Disney said the event would be on hiatus for 2011 and 2012 to accommodate construction that added Buena Vista Street and Cars Land to the park.

On equally short notice, Disney announced Monday that the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival is returning in a little more than two months, spanning five weekends in April, starting Friday, April 1 and ending on Sunday, May 1.
Disney released very few details of the event, but there were a few interesting tidbits. The article says a “distinguishing feature” of the event will be “new Festival Marketplaces, where guests can sip and savor delicious flavors from throughout the state of California.” This sounds like a move away from the previous festival, where featured menu items were sold from existing foods locations. If this is the case, we'd expect these “marketplaces” to be based around food trucks, which would make obtaining health permits for the temporary offerings easier for Disney.
The article mentioned premium events, which we truly hope means the return of the Napa Rose Cooking School, but most assuredly will include winemaker dinners. The announcement also promised “culinary demonstrations, appearances by celebrity chefs, and informative seminars,” which could be hosted in the Hollywood Land area now that the park's “hub” lacks the space to erect the kind of stage used during past events.

Another surprise announcement on Monday supports that theory. According to the Disney Parks Blog, the Mad T Party, a nighttime dance party at Disney California Adventure, will be offered for the last time on Wednesday, March 30. This give Disney one day to re-dress the Mad T Party stage for the Food & Wine Festival, and repurpose the two bars dedicated to that event for the Festival.
Egg-stravaganza expanded for 2016
Originally introduced in 2013 as a Limited Time Magic promotion, Egg-stravaganza returns for the fourth time March 2 through 27. New for 2016, the egg hunt has expanded to Downtown Disney, in addition to hunts inside both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. A dozen oversized eggs decorated with images of Disney characters will be placed around each of the three hunt locations. Egg hunters first purchase a special map and stickers to help locate these eggs, and then place the stickers in the corresponding spots on the map.

The maps are $5.95 plus tax (a $1 increase from 2015), and no discounts apply. Maps are sold at the following locations:
- Disneyland – Disneyana, Disney Showcase, “it's a small world” Toy Shop, Little Green Men Store Command, Piece of Eight, Pioneer Mercantile, Stromboli's Cart.
- Disney California Adventure – Elias & Co., Humphrey’s Service & Supplies, Off the Page, Oswald's, Sarge's Surplus Hut, Treasures in Paradise.
- Downtown Disney – Anna & Elsa's Boutique, D Street, Disney Pin Traders, WonderGround Gallery, World of Disney.
- Disneyland Resort Hotels – Acorns Gifts & Goods (Grand Californian Hotel), Mickey in Paradise (Paradise Pier Hotel), Fantasia Shop (Disneyland Hotel)
Once complete, participants return the map to a redemption location to claim their prize—one of six different two-inch-tall “eggs” featuring all-new character designs for the 2016 promotion. Redemption centers are located at Elias & Company at Disney California Adventure, Disney Showcase in Disneyland, and World of Disney in Downtown Disney.

If you are only in it for the eggs, you don't need to complete the egg hunt to claim your prize—just buy your map at a redemption center and receive your egg. The eggs are awarded randomly, but you may be able to trade with other collectors to complete a set if that is your goal.
Pool closure, Fastpass testing, and Constructionland updates
- We were remiss in not reporting this earlier, and it's something anyone planning a vacation at the Disneyland Hotel this spring should be aware of. The E-Ticket pool, D-Ticket pool, and some cabanas at the Disneyland Hotel are closed through an unspecified “spring” date for refurbishment. The Monorail slide, Minnie Mouse spa, and water play area remain open during the refurbishment. During the refurbishment, hotel guests can use the pools at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel or the Paradise Pier Hotel. Disney has added information about this closure to the hotel website, and guests who have reservations during this refurbishment have been notified by mail. - Disneyland conducted another Fastpass test at Space Mountain last week, in what seems to be a follow up to the testing we mentioned last October. For this test, Disney again placed two temporary bar code readers at the Fastpass return entrance for the ride. Visitors scanned the barcode of their Fastpass at the readers, with a green light indicating the pass was valid.
When this test was first conducted last fall, the look of the barcode readers—similar in appearance to the Fastpass+ readers use at Walt Disney World to scan RFID-enabled MagicBands—led to a great deal of speculation that MagicBands and the Fastpass+ program are coming to Disneyland. Disney representatives tried to downplay those rumors, saying the test was part of a routine trial and not a precursor to a MagicBand roll-out.
However, the return of the bar code scanners does indicate that Disney is moving ahead to roll out some sort of change to the Fastpass system at Disneyland. From a sheer operational standpoint, it makes no sense for Disney to invest in fancy barcode readers to scan the Fastpass tickets of returning riders, when a cast member stationed at that checkpoint can do the same thing faster and more effectively.
The need for a barcode scanner only makes sense if the media being scanned is not a Fastpass ticket at all, but some other item—perhaps an admission ticket or annual passport—that is not printed with human-readable attraction and return time information. And to us, that suggests a Fastpass-like system tied to admission media instead of MagicBands.
Even if MagicBand devices are not in Disneyland's future, the days of Fastpass as we know it are almost certainly numbered.

- Big Thunder Ranch cast restrooms
- According to another permit filed last week, Disney is adding 27 more dual electric vehicle charging stations to the Mickey and Friends parking structure. The spaces already installed are frequently filled, even on relatively uncrowded days, so there is clearly a demand for more charging stations. Disney has yet to install charging stations in other guest parking lots.
- The static price signs at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths will soon be replaced by digital display boards. Disney has filed for permits to install digital displays at the front entrance ticket booths. This will make it much easier for Disney to display up-to-the-minute price and availability information.
- We have a little more information about the Starbucks being constructed in Downtown Disney near the AMC theater. The permit calls for a 561-square-foot addition to the existing 537-square-foot space. If you want to know why your morning coffee is so expensive, consider that the value of the addition is estimated at $947,000.

The ride will be open with the current film Friday, Saturday and Sunday each week. Disney has not yet said when the new film will permanently replace the current movie.
- It's Tough to be a Bug! – closed. The theater currently hosts a sneak peek of the upcoming movie Zootopia.
- Muppet*Vision 3D – closed indefinitely due to the Frozen Fun overlay.
- Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular – closed. Replaced in summer 2016 by a new Frozen musical.
- Grizzly River Run – closed at least through March 13 for refurbishment.
Disneyland Resort
- Disneyland Hotel – E-Ticket pool, D-Ticket pool, and some cabanas closed through spring for refurbishment. The Monorail pool and slide remain open during the refurbishment. During the refurbishment, hotel guests can use the pools at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel or the Paradise Pier Hotel.

- 2016 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 5–8. The 5K, 10K, and Pixie Dust Challenge events are sold out, but the half-marathon event is still available. Details on the runDisney website. Volunteer Registration opens on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. (PST)
- Dapper Days at the Parks (unofficial event) – Sunday, May 1, 2016. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
- Grad Nite events – This party for high school seniors graduating in 2016 will be held on these dates: May 13, 14, 18, 20, 21, 23, 25, 31; June 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10, 11, 15, 17. The 2016 event includes admission to Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disney California Adventure park from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
- Season of the Force – no end date announced.
- 2016 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – September 1–4. Registration is still open for the Dumbo Double Dare and Disneyland Half Marathon races. Volunteer Registration opens May 24, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. PDT. Details on the runDisney website.
- Dapper Day Fall Soiree (unofficial event) – Sunday, November 6, 2016. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
- 2016 Avengers Half Marathon Weekend – November 10–13. Registration opens April 15, 2016. Volunteer Registration opens July 19, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. (PDT).
2017
- 2017 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend – January 12–15, 2017. Registration opens June 14, 2016.
- “Use It or Lose It” weekend – January 28–29, 2017. Our designation for the final weekend of January, which marks the deadline for cast members, community groups and Club 33 members to use their remaining complementary admission tickets from the 2016 allocation.
- 2017 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 11–14, 2017. Registration opens September 20, 2016.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
School Holidays

2016
- Spring Break(s) – March 14 – April 8. Most local schools are closed one week during this period. Expect the majority of school closures—and crowds—the weeks immediately before and after Easter Sunday, March 27.
- Local School Holiday – Monday, March 28. Most local schools not already on Spring Break will be closed for Cesar Chavez Day.
- Nevada Day (observed) – Friday, October 28. A school holiday for our neighbors to the northeast creates a 3-day weekend and usually adds to the Halloween weekend crowds. Some Nevada schools take the entire week off as a Fall Break.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 20–21. Expect holiday-level crowds October 19–24 as Utah students and families take advantage of a Fall Break scheduled around an annual state education convention. Not all Utah schools close for UEA, but the impact on the resort is significant enough to mention.
- Thanksgiving Break – November 21–25. Many local schools close for the entire week of Thanksgiving.
- Winter Break – December 19, 2016 – January 6, 2017. Most schools close only two of these three weeks, but some districts close all three weeks due to the Saturday Christmas.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Southern California CityPASS

2016 Southern California CityPASS ($329/$294) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2016. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $38/$30. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. Character Meet-and-Greet at Disney California Adventure – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5″x7″ photograph per visit. Star Wars Imperial Meet-and-Greet at Disneyland – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity in the Star Tours Launch Bay in Tomorrowland. Offered daily from 4pm to 8pm. As of 1/23/16, Kylo Ren replaced Darth Vader at this location. Disneyland Resort merchandise – Cardholders also receive 10 percent off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney-operated retail stores.
