Wakanda forever, and a Wrinkle preview | Pacific Surfliner partners with Disneyland for rail and ticket specials | Parking toll | Last chance to save | This and that…
Wakanda forever, and a Wrinkle preview
Black Panther fever is alive and well at Disney California Adventure, where the star of the latest Marvel motion picture is featured at a new meet-and-greet in Hollywood Land. Staged as an exhibit of technology invented by the fictional African nation of Wakanda, the meet-and-greet gives fans a chance to see props from the film and pose for photos with T’Challa, the Black Panther himself.

During this opening weekend, the line for the meet-and-greet at times reached two hours. However, a possibly more interesting photo opportunity is available right outside Stage 17, and there's no line for this one. Members of the Dora Milaje, the Royal Guard of Wakanda, escort the Black Panther to and from the meet-and-greet venue, and remain on guard outside after T'Challa enters the exhibit. Along with an armored Avengers vehicle, these fierce warriors offer a unique photo opportunity. During a weekend visit, the Dora Milaje posed for photos, and with younger visitors even took the time to show off some defensive stances.

Disney has not said how long this “limited-time experience” will run, so it's a good idea to catch this as soon as possible. Meet-and-greet hours vary by day, and unfortunately do not appear on the Disneyland website or smartphone app. Cast members recommended that guests arrive at the venue around 10:00 a.m. to get in line for the first appearance.

Next door to Stage 17, the former Muppet Theater is open as the Sunset Showcase, and currently features an extended preview of A Wrinkle in Time, opening in the U.S. on March 9. As with other film previews, a display case in the waiting area exhibits a collection of costumes from the film, this time a dress from each of the three Mrs characters. And as with other films, this preview takes advantage of both 3D projection, and in-theater special effects to enhance the extended trailer.

Pacific Surfliner partners with Disneyland for rail and ticket specials
Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner train service has joined with the Disneyland Resort for two special offers this spring.
The first offer is a kids-ride-free deal, offering a free child ticket for each adult ticket purchased. The offer is only good for one-way or round trips to the Anaheim station, and the child must be age 2 to 12. Infants (under 2) ride free, but children and infants must travel with an adult who is at least 18 years of age. Book through the Amtrak website and use promo code V231 to receive the discount. A value ticket from San Diego starts at $42 each way; a trip from San Luis Obispo is $70 each way.
Once you've booked your train travel, you can use your reservation number to save an extra 5 percent off the So Cal Resident ticket offer, available now through May 24. You must buy the discounted Disneyland tickets online before you arrive, as the offer is not valid at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths.
The 350-mile Pacific Surfliner route runs from San Luis Obispo (SLO) to San Diego, with 27 stops in between. Disneyland is serviced by the Anaheim Regional Transit Intermodal Center (ARTIC), located off State Route 57 near Angel Stadium. From ARTIC, passengers take the Anaheim Resort Transit bus to the Disneyland Resort; this transfer is included in the Amtrak ticket. The train ride from San Diego clocks in at just under two hours, plus transfer time to reach Disneyland. It takes a bit over six hours to reach Anaheim from SLO.
While a train ride (and bus transfer) may not be faster of cheaper than driving straight to Disneyland for a day, this offer is specifically tied to the 2- and 3-day tickets in the So Cal Resident offer. A family coming from San Diego could catch the 6:00 a.m. train, be in the parks around 9:00 a.m., and have the full day to play before checking into an area hotel. Disney is likely expecting visitors to plan a short getaway with these offers, staying one or two nights to use up their park ticket.
The So Cal Resident tickets expire May 24, 2018, and are blocked out March 23 through April 8, 2018. Click here for additional terms and conditions on the So Cal Resident offer.
Visit pacificsurfliner.com/Disney for complete details regarding the kids-ride-free and 5 percent discount offers.
Parking toll
The Amtrak special above offers Southern California residents an alternative to driving to the Resort, and comes as Disney embarks on construction of a new parking structure adjacent to the Mickey and Friends structure. With current parking capacity decreased during construction, it's not surprising to see Disney working with other transportation providers to reduce car traffic.
As noted here last month, oversized vehicles are no longer permitted in the Mickey and Friends parking structure, and are instead directed to the flat Toy Story parking lot. The former oversize parking lot at Mickey and Friends has been converted mostly into parking spaces for visitors with a valid disability parking permit. That change was necessary, as Disney demolished much of the accessible parking area on the ground floor of the parking structure, and transformed it into what appears to be a new loading zone for the trams.
Outside of the structure, a portion of the existing tram loading area has already been demolished, with another section marked to go soon. It appears that arriving visitors will descend the escalators and pass through the bag screening checkpoints, and board the trams just beyond security for the ride to the main entrance.
Trams returning from the parks could possibly drop passengers off at the new loading area inside the parking structure, before making the loop to pick up more riders.
As part of this construction, the electric vehicle charging stations previously located on the Chip and Dale level have been removed, leaving only a smaller set of charging stations available on the second floor of the parking structure. Cast members say these spaces fill very quickly each day, so drivers of electric vehicles should be aware of this change. There are no electric vehicle charging stations available at the Toy Story parking lot or in Downtown Disney.

This and that…
…When Disney announced the closure of the Ariel's Grotto restaurant and the Cove for Pixar Pier-related construction, they said the Cove Bar would reopen briefly during spring break. So far, Disney has published the schedule for the first half of the peak spring break season (March 23 through April 8), and the Cove Bar is listed as closed for the duration.
…Just as the new Disney Home store opened in Downtown Disney, taking over the former D Street space, more than half of the World of Disney store is now closed for renovation.

- MouseAdventure (unofficial event) – Sunday, April 29, 2018. More information on the event website.
- 2018 Grad Nites: May 4, 5, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 22, 23, 29 and 30; June 1, 2, 5, 6, 8 and 9.
- CHOC Walk – Sunday, August 26. Additional details will be released soon.
- Moonlight Magic after-hours event for Disney Vacation Club members – Thursday, November 15. Reservations open October 4.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 11, 2018.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Discounts for:
Everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you pre-purchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Southern California residents |
Southern California residents can visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks multiple days before May 24, 2018 for as little as $159 with the 2018 So Cal Resident ticket. The 2-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 24. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $159 for ages 3 and up, a discount of 20% compared to box office prices and a $10 increase from the 2017 promotion. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $45, a savings of up to $40 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket. If you want an extra day to visit the parks, there is also a 3-Day 1-Park per Day option ($199) and a 3-Day Park Hopper ticket ($244) in the promotion. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them by calling (714) 781-4636. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 21, 2018. Tickets expire May 24, 2018, and are blocked out March 23 through April 8, 2018. |
