Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! opens May 27 | DCA's Summer of Heroes | Disney Junior – Live on Stage to close for update | Medal reveal spurs Tinker Bell half marathon weekend registrations | 8 cars burn in fire at Mickey and Friends parking structure | This and that…
Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! opens May 27
The new Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! attraction will open May 27 at Disney California Adventure, Disney announced last week. The new ride is part of what Disney calls “an ever-expanding universe of stories that will grow even bigger over time” at the park.
Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! was built using the show building from the former Tower of Terror attraction, which closed at the start of 2017. The ride is based on the popular Guardians of the Galaxy movie, and opens just three weeks after the sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, hits theaters.

Disney says, “This new adventure blasts you straight into the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' story for the first time ever, alongside characters from the blockbuster films and comics. As you help Rocket bust his pals out of the Collector's Fortress, you will experience randomized ride experiences complete with all-new visual and audio effects and music inspired by the popular film soundtracks. You never know which adventure you will get!”
May 27 is also the opening date for Pandora – The World of Avatar, at Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom park, giving the Disney Resorts on both coasts a marketing focus for the summer.
DCA's Summer of Heroes
The grand opening of the new ride kicks off Disney's Summer of Heroes marketing campaign, which promises to bring more of the Marvel universe into the Disneyland Resort. During the promotion, Disney will introduce both limited-time offerings, and also debut new year-round experiences.
“It's going to be a thrilling summer at the Disneyland Resort,” said David Duffy, Director, Creative Entertainment. “You can celebrate the arrival of Guardians of the Galaxy–Mission BREAKOUT! and join forces with legendary Super Heroes. You can choose an awesome encounter with Star-Lord, Black Widow, Spider-Man, Hawkeye or Captain America, step up to meet Groot for the first time, and find out if you have what it takes to join the Avengers. It's all part of the adventure with Summer of Heroes.”
Limited offerings for the Summer of Heroes promotion include the Avengers Training Initiative, which sounds like a Marvel take on the Jedi Training Academy. “Black Widow and Hawkeye assemble young recruits for a series of tests to see if they have what it takes to join the ranks of the Avengers.” Black Widow will also appear in Disney California Adventure park throughout the day in an “armored Avengers vehicle” for a ” heroic encounter with park guests.”

Of course, there will be Avengers-themed food, beverage and merchandise offerings throughout the park for the Summer of Heroes promotion, as well as the new Guardians of the Galaxy attractions.
Also coming in May, but billed as a year-round experience, is a new Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Dance Off! show. Disney's announcement reads, “Don't be surprised if you run into the Guardians of the Galaxy on their way to the Milano, with Star-Lord firing up his old-school boom box to get the party started. Gamora may prefer to stand back and observe, but everyone else is bound to get in the groove and show off their moves during this awesome rock 'n' roll bash!”
Possibly the best news for Guardians fans is a first ever meet-and-greet opportunity with Groot. Groot will join Captain America and Spider-Man in Disney California Adventure.
The Summer of Heroes promotion runs May 27 through September 10, 2017.
Disney Junior – Live on Stage to close for update
When Disney Junior announced that the animated “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse” series would be replaced by the new “Mickey and the Roadster Racers” show, we wondered how or if Disney would reflect the change in the Disney Junior – Live on Stage! show performed in Disney California Adventure. As reported by OC Weekly, it turns out performers for the puppet-based DCA show were notified back in December that the current version of the show would close on April 9, 2017.
Disney has confirmed that the show will close for an update in April, as it has several times in the past to keep the live show current with the broadcast programming. The theme park show debuted in 2003 as Playhouse Disney – Live on Stage, and featured a completely different cast of character based on the current Playhouse Disney lineup of “Rolie Polie Olie,” “Stanley” and “Bear in the Big Blue House.”
When the Playhouse Disney channel changed names to Disney Junior in 2011, the Live on Stage! show followed suit, and introduced a “Jake and the Never Land Pirates” segment. Disney Junior – Live on Stage! now features Jake and friends, along with the “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse,” “Sophia the First,” and “Doc McStuffins” segments.
The update comes as puppeteers for the show are negotiating a new contract with Disney, according to articles in OC Weekly and Orange County Register.
Medal reveal spurs Tinker Bell half marathon weekend registrations
Disney last week revealed the medal designs for the 2017 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend events, prompting runners who were on the fence to register for one of the races to be held over Mother's Day weekend.
The medals were designed in a collaboration between the Disney Yellow Shoes design group and race sponsor PANDORA Jewelry, and are a major upgrade to the prior Tinker Bell design.

If you can't resist these medals, you can still register for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon or the Pixie Dust Challenge via the runDisney website. runDisney will also allow runners who had already registered for an event to transfer their registration to a different distance, provided that event has not sold out.
Runners who had registered for the 10K can transfer to the half-marathon or upgrade to the Pixie Dust Challenge, and runners currently registered for the half marathon alone can upgrade to the Pixie Dust challenge. There is a $45 transfer fee.

Registration for the Tinker Bell 10K and the Never Land 5K events is closed through runDisney, but there are options for runners willing to join a charity team, or who book through selected runDisney travel providers.
At the time of this writing, two travel providers confirmed that they still have availability of the sold-out Tinker Bell 10K event:
- Magical Enchanted Vacations – spots available for Tinker Bell 10K, half marathon, and Pixie Dust Challenge; 5K has a waitlist. Contact Kristina Sharp via email, or call (865) 441–6115.
- Storybook Trips – spots available for half marathon and Pixie Dust Challenge; has one Tinker Bell 10K spot left. Contact Mary Jensen via emaill, or call (763) 923–1469.
These spots will sell out quickly, so be sure to reach out to either agent to claim one.
8 cars burn in fire at Mickey and Friends parking structure
Eight cars suffered major damage in a fire that broke out in the Mickey and Friends parking structure at the Disneyland Resort last Monday, and seven people were treated for minor smoke inhalation. Four of the victims, all Disneyland cast members, were transported to area hospitals, according to the Anaheim fire department.
The Anaheim Fire Department responded to a car fire in the structure around 4:40 p.m. Monday afternoon. The parking structure was evacuated and Disney temporarily halted tram service to the structure. AFD reported that the fire was out around 5:35 p.m.
Shortly after 7:00 p.m., Disneyland reported that all except the second floor Daisy level of the parking structure had reopened so visitors could retrieve their cars.
The Anaheim Fire Department has put an initial damage estimate at $180,000, and says four of the burned vehicles are a total loss. The department said no foul play is suspected. KTLA reports the preliminary investigation narrowed the possible iginition source to either a a 2015 Toyota Prius or a 2001 Ford Expedition that were parked next to one another in the structure.

School Holidays
Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other school holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2017
- Cesar Chavez Day – Friday, March 31. Many locals schools are closed.
- Spring Break – April 2–29. The four-week period during which most local schools will observe a one-week spring holiday. Based on the blockout dates of the Southern California discount tickets, Disney expects the largest crowds April 9–23.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 19–20. Expect large attendance levels October 19–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- Nevada Day – October 28. Nevada schools will be closed on Friday, October 28 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Non-Disney Resort Events
Notable events at parks and attractions around Southern California. If you know of an event that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).

- Red, White and Boom – July 4.
- Brick-or-Treat – Saturdays in October.
- Holidays at Legoland – November 24, 2017 through January 1, 2018
- Kids' New Year's Eve – December 31.
Sea World San Diego
- Lunar New Year – through February 21.
- Magic Weekends – March 4–26.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 28, 2016.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.
The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next 8-11 months.
