Your first look at The Star Wars Experience | Share Your Ears promotion and sweepstakes to benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation | This and that… | Crowd Forecast
Your first look at The Star Wars Experience
The highlight of the “Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland 60” special that aired on ABC Sunday night was for many fans an 80-second preview of what actor Harrison Ford introduced as “The Star Wars Experience.”

The spot provided a very, very brief look at 15 pieces of concept art from the new lands, soon to be under construction at California's Disneyland, and Disney's Hollywood Studios park at Walt Disney World in Florida. For those who missed the segment, here is the artwork shown during the special, and a transcript of the accompanying narration. Select any photo to open a larger version and see more detail.
“For almost 40 years, we've watched the Star Wars universe happen on screen. Now, we at Walt Disney Imagineering have joined forces with the imagination of Lucas Film to bring this galaxy to life at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts.

Imagine stepping about the Millennium Falcon, and actually piloting the fastest ship in the galaxy. Banking left, right; firing the laser cannons. You're in complete control. Imagine finding yourself in the middle of a battle between the Resistance and the First Order, in a race against time.

You've watched the saga, now enter these authentic locales with your every sense engaged. You're meeting droids and aliens. Entering an other-worldly street market; actually tasting the local delicacies. And going upscale at the planet's best dinner club. Or, for the truly adventurous, heading down to the local cantina.

The stories are epic. The locations breathtaking. Soon, you can experience your own Star Wars adventure, like never before. It's all coming to Disney Parks, the place where Star Wars lives.”

The preview leads us to expect at least two rides, a outdoor marketplace, a bar and a high-end restaurant—and opens the door to lots of conjecture. Speculation is fun, and is probably all we'll be able to do for quite a while, so let's make wild guesses based on concept art:
It seems the Millennium Falcon attraction will be a simulator, maybe something like Star Tours, but will somehow include interactive features that allow the rider to be in “complete control.” It occurs to me that Mission: Space at Walt Disney World is a simulator with an element of rider interaction, so perhaps we'll see another iteration of that ride system.
The second ride, the one that puts riders “in the middle of a battle between the Resistance and the First Order,” struck me as the type of ride most commonly associated with Universal Studios, in which a ride vehicle moves through show scenes projected on giant screens. A few of the folks I follow on Twitter noted similarities to the Transformer ride at Universal. Personally, this is not my favorite type of ride system, but it could be interesting to see how Disney makes it its own.
It is no surprise to anyone that Disney is including a cantina in the new Star Wars Land; the only question is how the company will spin the inevitable decision to break with a 60-year-old tradition to serve alcohol in the new venue. The inclusion of a high-end restaurant was more of a surprise to me, only in that the Star Wars universe is almost completely lacking in iconic food items. Blue ice cream is possibly the only obvious menu item for the Star Wars Land concessions, but there's little else in the canon that inspires a fine dining establishment.
One thing that really stuck out to me from the concept art was the number of Star Wars aliens seen in the various settings, and it makes me wonder if atmosphere entertainment will be the real third attraction of the land. A truly immersive experience will rely on a large number of performers to set the scene. I don't expect to see a Star Wars stage show in this land; rather, I expect it to be a Star Wars stage show, and to be able to interact with the performers.
Disney did not give any additional insight as to when the new land would open, or when more details might be revealed.
As for the rest of the “Wonderful World of Disney” special, it was somewhat a bust as a celebration of Disneyland. There were two big performance pieces set on Main Street, including Sir Elton John's red piano rendition of “Circle of Life,” and additional performances at Disney California Adventure. The rest of the show featured long segments that were taped at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, and promoted Disney's other projects in film, television, Broadway, and the international theme parks. As Disney company shows go, it was fine—but as a Disneyland special, it was lacking.
There were also some embarrassing gaffes in the broadcast, including audio problems during the performances by Sir Elton John. Based on complaints posted to social media, the much-hyped Disney Applause smartphone application wasn't able to handle the demand during broadcast time. Disney has since said that the content will be available via the app through February 28, so viewers who recorded the show on the DVR can use the app during replay this week to access the bonus content.
The Disney Applause app was not able to keep up with demand during the broadcast of Disneyland 60, and frustrated users were advised to rewatch the show and try again. Artwork © Disney.
Finally, I know I was not alone in my shock and disbelief when a commercial for the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood played (at least in the Los Angeles market), not just during the broadcast but in the commercial break immediately before the Star Wars Land preview. I have no idea how Universal was able to place that ad, or how ABC failed to protect that spot, but I'm sure the folks at NBCUniversal will be reaping the benefits of that spot well into 2017. After all, since we'll all be waiting for Disney to build Star Wars Land, we might as well go see the new land that's ready to open at Universal Studios.
Share Your Ears promotion and sweepstakes to benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation
Last week, Disney announced its Share your Ears promotion, promising to donate $5 (up to $1 million) for each photo shared to social media sites Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram using the hashtag #ShareYourEars. The promotion officially ends on March 14, but a quick search of Instagram alone yields over 122,000 posts with that hashtag, so it's almost certain that Disney fans have already made the 200,000 posts needed to yield the maximum donation (it's also likely that Disney made the $1 million donation before the promotion even began).
While Disney will continue to generate weeks of publicity as the promotion continues to spread through social media, the company announced a new component of the campaign Sunday night that will raise even more money for Make-A-Wish.
The Win a “Dazzled” Mickey Mouse Ear Hat from Disney promotion offers a chance to win a Swarovski crystal-studded Mickey Mouse ear hat valued at $25,000. This is, incidently, a duplicate of the Ear Hat offered during the Diamond Days sweepstakes.
A new contest offers the chance to win a pair of crystal-covered Mickey Mouse ears. Image © Disney.
There are two methods of entry. The first is to make a donation to Make-A-Wish via the contest website on Prizeo.com. The number of entries each donor receives is tied to the amount of money donated, and there are other prizes offered at specific donation levels:
- $5 = 1 entry
- $10 = 2 entries
- $25 = 5 entries and a thank you e-card
- $50 = 10 entries, plus a Share Your Ears campaign t-shirt and thank you e-card
If you donate over $50. you receive one additional entry for each $5 you add to your donation.
If you prefer not to donate, you can enter by mail using an entry form available on the contest website.
The contest ends April 4, 2016. Read the official rules on the contest website.

- 2017 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 11–14, 2017. Registration opens September 20, 2016.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
School Holidays
Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2016
- Spring Break(s) – March 14 – April 8. Most local schools are closed one week during this period. Expect the majority of school closures—and crowds—the weeks immediately before and after Easter Sunday, March 27.
- Local School Holiday – Monday, March 28. Most local schools not already on Spring Break will be closed for Cesar Chavez Day.
- Nevada Day (observed) – Friday, October 28. A school holiday for our neighbors to the northeast creates a 3-day weekend and usually adds to the Halloween weekend crowds. Some Nevada schools take the entire week off as a Fall Break.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 20–21. Expect holiday-level crowds October 19–24 as Utah students and families take advantage of a Fall Break scheduled around an annual state education convention. Not all Utah schools close for UEA, but the impact on the resort is significant enough to mention.
- Thanksgiving Break – November 21–25. Many local schools close for the entire week of Thanksgiving.
- Winter Break – December 19, 2016 – January 6, 2017. Most schools close only two of these three weeks, but some districts close all three weeks due to the Saturday Christmas.

Egg-stravaganza 2016 Egg-stravaganza returns for the fourth time March 2 through 27. New for 2016, the egg hunt has expanded to Downtown Disney, in addition to hunts inside both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. A dozen oversized eggs decorated with images of Disney characters will be placed around each of the three hunt locations. Egg hunters first purchase a special map and stickers to help locate these eggs, and then place the stickers in the corresponding spots on the map. The maps are $5.95 plus tax (a $1 increase from 2015), and no discounts apply. Maps are sold at the following locations:
Once complete, participants return the map to a redemption location to claim their prize—one of six different two-inch-tall “eggs” featuring all-new character designs for the 2016 promotion. Redemption centers are located at Elias & Company at Disney California Adventure, Disney Showcase in Disneyland, and World of Disney in Downtown Disney. If you are only in it for the eggs, you don't need to complete the egg hunt to claim your prize—just buy your map at a redemption center and receive your egg. The eggs are awarded randomly, but you may be able to trade with other collectors to complete a set if that is your goal. |

Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of October 4, 2015.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
