Diamond Days sweepstakes extended

Disney has once more extended the Diamond Days Sweepstakes that launched last May as part of the 60th Anniversary celebration, giving you until September 9, 2016 to enter to win.

Legally, this is a new sweepstakes, but the details are pretty much the same. As before, there is a Daily and a Weekly contest, and it's best to consider them to be two completely separate contests:

  • Daily contest – open to visitors on Disneyland Resort property. You must enter each day before 11:00 a.m. to be eligible for that day's prize; includes automatic entry into weekly contest.
  • Weekly contest – open to everyone else. Enter each day after 11:00 a.m.

The Diamond Days Sweepstakes now runs through September 9, 2016. MousePlanet file photo.

Daily contest – open to visitors on Disneyland Resort property; text entry

To enter the daily contest, look for the Word of the Day posted on signs outside each of the four bag check areas (both sides of the Esplanade; Disneyland Monorail entrance; Grand Californian Hotel entrance). Use your phone to correctly text the Word of the Day to 227853 between 7:00 a.m. and 10:59 a.m. This is the same number used for the previous contest.

Disney will notify the winners via reply text or phone call around 11:00 a.m. that same day. Winners have 60 minutes to claim the prize at the Disneyland Resort, or forfeit the prize.

Those who do not have or choose not to use a phone to enter the contest can enter using tablets available at the Guest Relations window outside Disney California Adventure. The winner will also be posted at this location, for those who do not have the ability to receive a text or call in the event they are the winner.

While the official rules state that “Entrant must be physically present at the Resort premises (which includes ungated areas) at the time of entry into daily sweepstakes,” many local readers have noted that they could easily reach the Disneyland Resort within 60 minutes if they win, and so plan to enter every day. The Word of the Day is available each morning from the contest website. If you follow MousePlanet on Twitter or Facebook, we also post the Word of the Day each morning from those accounts.

If you submit your text entry between 7:00 a.m. and 10:59 a.m., you are automatically entered into both the daily AND weekly drawings. If you submit your text entry after 10:59 a.m., you are not eligible to win the daily prize, but will be entered into the weekly prize drawing.

The prize in the daily contest is a VIP tour experience for the winner and up to three guests. The experience includes the services of a VIP guide for up to seven hours, a meal at a Disneyland Resort restaurant (up to $60 per person), and reserved viewing at selected shows and/or parades. Park admission is included for you and/or your guests if needed.

The daily contest runs February 5, 2016 through September 9, 2016, with a total of 217 prizes to be awarded.

Weekly contest – open to everyone; daily text or online entry

If you aren't visiting Disneyland, or lucky enough to live within quick driving distance, you can still enter each day to be eligible for the weekly contest.

To enter the weekly contest, visit the Word of the Day website to get that day's magic word, then fill out the entry form on the contest website. You can enter once per day. If you follow MousePlanet on Twitter or Facebook, we also post the Word of the Day each morning from those accounts.

Disney will select the weekly winner each Tuesday, and notify the weekly winner via e-mail and/or phone call. The winner must contact Disney within 2 business days or forfeit the prize.

The 31 weekly prizes include some repeats from the original contest and some new offerings. As before, all include a three-day, two-night trip to Disneyland for the winner and up to three guests.

  • One Dazzled Mickey Mouse Ears package – a Mickey Mouse hat “adorned with crystals,” and white gold plated, silver emblem consisting of a large topaz and smaller pavé diamonds.
  • Three Blue Diamond packages – each featuring a two-carat aqua blue diamond.
  • Two Red Diamond package – featuring a two-carat garnet red diamond.
  • Seven White Diamond packages – each featuring a one-carat white diamond, and a one-night stay in the Disneyland Dream Suite (subject to availability)
  • Nine Disney Character Party packages – featuring a “Disney Character VIP Party Experience”
  • Nine Disneyland Resort Experience packages – featuring a “special themed Disneyland Resort Experience”

One additional Final Prize, including a Disneyland vacation, a one-night stay in the Disneyland Dream Suite, and a limited-edition Disney lithograph, will be awarded at the end of the contest. The winner will be selected from all valid daily and weekly contest entries submitted between February 5, 2016 through September 9, 2016.

For full rules and eligibility requirements, please visit the official contest website.

Disneyland Resort Annual Passholder Days

Last week Disneyland began a month-long promotion called AP Days. The event runs daily through February 28, with some “exclusive” offers in both parks tied to a weekly theme. Last week's theme was “Main Street to Mickey Mouse,” and this week's (February 8 to February 14) theme is “Live the Adventure.”

The theme for the first week of AP Days was “Main Street to Mickey Mouse.” Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Activities are held in the Main Street Opera House in Disneyland, and at Stage 17 and the Blue Sky Cellar in Disney California Adventure. Each venue has its own operating hours. At Disneyland, the Main Street Opera House opens at 5:00 p.m., with registration for the movie screenings starting at Noon. Over at Disney California Adventure, Blue Sky Cellar appears to open at 10:00 a.m. each morning, and close at either 5:00 or 7:00 p.m. depending on day.

Note, based on the official Disneyland times guide, it appears only the Blue Sky Cellar location is open on Tuesdays – the Main Street Opera House and Stage 17 are both closed.

Disney says device charging stations are available at the Blue Sky Cellar, but what we found were two tables with power strips. Be sure to bring your own power adaptor and cords. Cast members from Disney's PhotoPass service are on hand to answer questions you may have about the service, and show you how to download photos.

Each event location has craft stations, with coloring sheets for passholders. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Passholders can stop by one of the locations to pick up that week's commemorative button, created by Disney artist Jeff Granito. This week, Disney also used the opportunity to hand out buttons promoting the upcoming DVD release of Snow White.

The three event locations and some restaurants have recipe cards. This week's recipes included Walt's Chili and a lemon chiffon pie named after Walt's first grandson Christopher. The event locations also have a brochure called the “Fun Facts Tour,” with trivia about locations around Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

Cast members at the Main Street Opera House and Stage 17 distributed free mini bottles of water and bags of pre-packaged, flavored popcorn.

There are several photo locations set up in Stage 17, including one character location. The venue still holds the set from Olaf's Snow Fest, minus the snow play area. The center of the room is filled with chairs where passholders can sit and watch animated shorts on two overhead screens. The merchandise department has a small pin trading display set up on one corner, with previews of soon-to-be-released passholder-exclusive and open-edition pins.

The remaining weeks and themes are:

  • Fantasy and Fun – February 15 to February 21
  • A World of Tomorrows – February 21 to February 28

Constructionland updates

…Breakfast service began last week at Rancho del Zocalo in Disneyland. The menu includes most of the entrees from the Riverbelle Terrace (minus the Cinnamon Roll French Toast), with the addition of new “Mexican-inspired” breakfast entrees. This is a “scatter service” location, with the “Traditional” breakfasts prepared and served at one counter, and the “Mexican-Inspired” breakfasts prepared and served at second station. If your family wants to try dishes from both sides, be prepared to split up to order, or wait in line twice.

…Registration is still open for the 2016 Disneyland Half Marathon and the Dumbo Double Dare Challenge, nearly a week after the events went on sale. The runDisney Kids Races, Disneyland 5K and Disneyland 10K are all sold out. If you registered for one or the events, be sure to come add your name to the Team MousePlanet race roster to connect with other runners and share training tips.

…Goofy's Kitchen reopens this Wednesday following refurbishment.

  • Dapper Days at the Parks (unofficial event) – Sunday, May 1, 2016. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.

2017

  • 2017 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend – January 12–15, 2017. Registration opens June 14, 2016.
  • “Use It or Lose It” weekend – January 28–29, 2017. Our designation for the final weekend of January, which marks the deadline for cast members, community groups and Club 33 members to use their remaining complementary admission tickets from the 2016 allocation.
  • 2017 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 11–14, 2017. Registration opens September 20, 2016.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

School Holidays

Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).

2016

  • Spring Break(s) – March 14 – April 8. Most local schools are closed one week during this period. Expect the majority of school closures—and crowds—the weeks immediately before and after Easter Sunday, March 27.
  • Local School Holiday – Monday, March 28. Most local schools not already on Spring Break will be closed for Cesar Chavez Day.
  • Nevada Day (observed) – Friday, October 28. A school holiday for our neighbors to the northeast creates a 3-day weekend and usually adds to the Halloween weekend crowds. Some Nevada schools take the entire week off as a Fall Break.
  • Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 20–21. Expect holiday-level crowds October 19–24 as Utah students and families take advantage of a Fall Break scheduled around an annual state education convention. Not all Utah schools close for UEA, but the impact on the resort is significant enough to mention.
  • Thanksgiving Break – November 21–25. Many local schools close for the entire week of Thanksgiving.
  • Winter Break – December 19, 2016 – January 6, 2017. Most schools close only two of these three weeks, but some districts close all three weeks due to the Saturday Christmas.

Current Discounts & Promotions

Disneyland prices as of October 4, 2015.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.

Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:

  • Disneyland Cooler Tote for $19.95 with a purchase of $25 or more.
  • Disneyland Throw Blanket for $19.95 with a purchase of $40 or more.

Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit.

ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).

Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
