Getting back up to speed for 2018
As has been the case for the past several years, holiday travel has left me playing catch-up during the new year, as I finally make it back inside the gates of the Disneyland Resort and take a look around. This update will be a bit more freeform than usual, as I walk you through the changes I noticed at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks this holiday weekend.
In Downtown Disney, the oversize ornaments have been replaced with spring blooms, and the banners switched out for the “Get More Happy” campaign.

The colorful plants aren't quite enough to distract from all of the closed shops in the center of the shopping complex, with Build-a-Bear and Ridemakerz now closed. If you still need your Build-a-Bear fix, the company opened a new location at The Block in Orange, just a few miles from Disneyland.

The Disney-owned D Street store also closed up shop last week, and will reopen as a long-anticipated Disney Home store in February. Just down the way, the candy kitchen at Marceline's Confectionery is also closed for refurbishment, though the store remains opens.

Refurbishment season is noticeably underway at Disneyland, where park-goers are greeted just inside the entrance tunnels by a stand of construction walls around Town Square. A matching set of walls surrounds Town Plaza, as workers replace the horse-drawn carriage track. As has been the case with past projects, Disney decorated the construction walls with posters that provide some history and background of the associated attraction. And while the Main Street vehicles are closed for the duration of the work, one of the fire engines is parked outside the fire station, with an engineer available to help take photos.
In Fantasyland, more construction walls surround Dumbo the Flying Elephant, as that ride finally gets a much-needed shade structure over a relocated queue.

Readers who remember the multi-year renovation of Disney California Adventure will likely have flashbacks when they see the photos of the current crop of construction walls. This time it's the back of the park under wraps, with most of Paradise Pier closed for the Pixar Pier makeover. The walls begin before you even reach Paradise Pier, with the Sonoma Terrace patio blocked off. Grizzly River Rapids and the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail are also closed for their annual refurbishments.

Crossing over the bridge into Paradise Pier is something like walking through a struggling shopping mall, or, for SoCal locals, visiting Shoreline Village. You know something is still open around the corner—or else the whole area would be closed—but you have to pass a bunch of vacant storefronts to get there. Some of the carousel-themed props are still visible inside the windows of the now-shuttered Treasures in Paradise shop.

The murals on the exterior of Ariel's Grotto are usually blocked by the line of customers waiting for a table at the Cove Bar, and now they've been permanently removed as part of the Pixar Pier makeover. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Somehow I overlooked that King Triton Carousel was not among the locations that closed last week for the Pixar Pier makeover. Disney's concept art for this project provided no details regarding plans for the attraction, and it's not listed on current refurbishment schedule.

With the queue area for Toy Story Midway Mania closed behind construction walls, riders wait in line along the row of construction walls that extends as far as California Screamin. At one point over the weekend, the line reached as far as the Cove Bar.
During construction, the entire area between Toy Story Midway Mania and the Silly Symphony Swings is closed, so visitors have a long walk to get from one to the other.

2018 Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival Events
Registration for the 2018 Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival signature events is now open via the Disneyland website, but it's going to take some work to plan your schedule. Disney has placed most of the event information behind a registration wall this year, so you'll need to first create a profile on the website to be able to view the schedule. Here are some of our key tasting notes for this year's lineup:
The 2018 event kicks off with a Taste of the Festival preview night on March 1. Attendees will sample food and beverages from the Festival marketplace booths, and enjoy live entertainment. Tickets are $125 per person, or $150 (plus tax & gratuity) if you want to upgrade to the VIP package for an expanded menu of appetizers and beverages. Theme park admission is not required for this event, which is a nice change from past Taste offerings.
A new offering called Celebrity Chef LIVE! at the Hyperion is a replacement for the “In the Kitchen With” series, and puts chefs Robert Irvine and Guy Fieri on their biggest Disney stage yet. The events are $99 per person (plus tax and gratuity), or you can book a VIP Experience for $250 and watch the demonstration from a seating area right on stage. This event includes samples of the featured dish after the demonstration. Again, theme park admission is not required for this event.
The Sweet Sundays events move to the Napa Rose this year, which provides a more comfortable atmosphere—and includes five hours of valet parking at the Grand Californian Hotel. Tickets are $99 per person (plus tax and gratuity). The three chefs are a repeat from the 2017 offering, and as of press time the Sweet Sunday with Duff Goldman has sold out.
The majority of the Winemaker and Brewmaster dinners are held at restaurants of the Disneyland Resort Hotels, so again, theme park admission is not required. The one exception is a Winemaker Dinner with David Arthur Vineyards, which is held at the Carthay Circle Restaurant inside DCA, and is limited to just 24 guests. These dinners are $150 to $300 per person (plus tax and gratuity) depending on the presenting winemaker or brewmaster.
For 2018, the Culinary Demonstrations will be presented on a new stage in the Paradise Gardens area each Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of the festival. There are two options if you want to catch one of these presentations: walk up and wait in line, or book a $30 (plus tax) VIP package. The (free) general admission area is standing-room only, and does not include a sample of the featured dish. VIPs receive reserved seating for the demonstration, a meet-and-greet with the chef, and a sample of the finished dish.
The Wine, Beer and Spirits seminars return to the Sonoma Terrace, and are $20 (plus tax) per person. There is at least one seminar scheduled each day of the Festival, with as many as four scheduled on weekend days.
Book any of these events through the Festival website. Immediate payment is required, and no refunds are available.
If this sounds like too much advance planning, there are also free daily seminars and demonstrations scheduled each Thursday through Sunday of the Festival. These demonstrations will be hosted at the Backlot Stage in Hollywood Land, and the schedule posted each week.
For younger cooks, the Junior Chef program will also be offered each day in Hollywood Land. This program is for kids ages 3 to 11, and no registration is required.
New parking policy for recreational and oversized vehicles
We shared last week that Disney had officially filed building permits for the “Cleo parking structure,” a new six-story, 2,409,554-square-foot parking structure to be build adjacent to the Mickey and Friends parking structure on what is now the Pinocchio lot. As a result of this new construction project, starting February 1, drivers of recreational and oversized vehicles can park only in the Toy Story parking lot.
The Disneyland website already displays the new parking policy, and specifically lists the following vehicles:
Recreational and Oversized Vehicles
- Buses
- Dually trucks
- Motor homes
- Passenger vehicles with a trailer
- Recreational vehicles (RV)
- RV campers
- Tractor-trailers
The website further states that these vehicles are also prohibited in all other Disneyland Resort parking lots, to include Downtown Disney and hotel parking lots.
This and that…
…A new refillable popcorn bucket is available for Disneyland Resort annual passholders. The bucket is $15, and refills are $1.00 through March 1, 2018. As with past such offers, a valid AP and photo ID are required to purchase the bucket or a refill.
…The 2018 NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) show will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center next Thursday, January 25 through Sunday, January 27. This is the largest convention hosted in the Disneyland Resort area. Expect convention-related crowds next weekend as a result.
…The Haunted Mansion reopens this Thursday, January 18.
…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We'll also include a fun bonus, such as an Eye Spy or a trivia question. To subscribe to our free newsletter, just enter your e-mail in the box below.

Resort Events
Check here to see if a large convention, competition, or park event might fall during your next trip to the Disneyland Resort. If you know of any in-park events, official or unofficial, that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
- Disneyland After Dark after-hours event – Thursday, January 18. Tickets are now on sale at the event website. .
- Lunar New Year Festival at Disney California Adventure – January 26 through February 18.
- Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival – March 2 through April 12.
- Pixar Fest begins – April 13. Debut of the new “Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular” fireworks show, as well as the first performances of the Paint the Night parade in Disney California Adventure, and Pixar Play Parade in Disneyland.
- Dapper Day Spring Outing to Disneyland (unofficial event) – Sunday, April 22. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
- 2018 Grad Nites: May 4, 5, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 22, 23, 29 and 30; June 1, 2, 5, 6, 8 and 9.
- Moonlight Magic after-hours event for Disney Vacation Club members – Thursday, November 15. Reservations open October 4.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 28, 2016.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you pre-purchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |
