Constructionland | Race to register for the 2016 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend | Kylo Ren ousts Darth Vader at the Star Wars Launch Bay | This and that… | Crowd Forecast
Constructionland
Disneyland is just weeks into the construction cycle that will eventually end with the opening of Star Wars Land. As part of this phase of the project, the Rivers of America complex—including Tom Sawyer Island. the Disneyland Railroad, and the Big Thunder Ranch trail and its surrounding area—is closed, .

In unrelated projects, the Jungle Cruise and Autopia are also closed for major refurbishments, leaving two more E-ticket attractions closed for the winter travel season. As should be expected, lines are proportionally longer at other major attractions. The Haunted Mansion reopened last week utilizing Fastpass service, something usually only offered during the holiday season.
Disney is trying some creative ways to come up with new attractions from closed rides, and in some ways their efforts are compelling. The Main Street and New Orleans Square train stations are both open for visitors to explore Disneyland Railroad engines and cars parked at each one. Conductors are available at each station to chat with visitors and discuss in great detail the history and operation of the trains. There is even a PhotoPass photographer on the platform to take photos, a nice plus for those passholders with the free PhotoPass benefit.

At the Main Street station, the Lilly Belle car is currently on display. While visitors can't go inside the car, the windows are open so you can take a look inside. Cast members tell us that Imagineering is working on bringing more exhibit materials to display inside the station, and may add a movie with historical footage.
At the New Orleans Square station, a walkway has been built across the tracks to allow visitors access to both sides of the station, a new opportunity to see the “back side” of a train. One of the push cars is also on display at this station, but again, out of reach of visitors.
While the static exhibits don't bring the same kinetic energy to Disneyland as a moving train, the chance to explore the trains in a new way is a novel attraction, and to some degree, pays homage to Walt Disney and his love of trains.

Less compelling is the rotating exhibit on the Rivers of America, with either the Mark Twain or the Sailing Ship Columbia parked at the Frontierland dock. “We're not sailing today, we're just a floating museum,” greeted the cast member as we passed through the turnstiles to board the Mark Twain. “Come on over and help increase our counts!” called another cast member, one of a group clustered along the dock.
Unlike the Disneyland Railroad cast members, those assigned to the Mark Twain did not seem to have any history or operational trivia to share, and seemed to be concerned primarily with visitor safety—a necessary role on any attraction, but not very engaging for visitors. Climbing up to the second deck, we discovered Dr. Facilier from The Princess and the Frog engaged in an unexpected meet-and-greet. Later in the day, we spotted Princess Tiana and Louis the alligator greeting visitors on the bow of the riverboat.
For the Mark Twain to be successfully used as a “floating museum,” it needs something to actually look at. As a character meet-and-greet location, it needs signage. As used this weekend, it was just an unfortunate reminder that all traffic has been halted on the river for at least a year.

The contrast between the two offerings highlights the challenge Disneyland faces with turning closed rides into new attractions. When you offer people something new and different, like the chance to really talk with a train engineer, or cross the tracks and visit an area usually off-limits to guests, you can overcome some of the disappointment people feel at having the ride closed for an extended period of time.
Offering an experience people could already have, however—in this case being on the Mark Twain—without offering anything new or unique to offset the fact that the riverboat doesn't go anywhere now just falls flat. Meet-and-greets are one idea, but certainly there are better options out there. With nearly a dozen rides closed during construction season, it's going to take more than a character experience or craft station to make people feel they're getting the value from their increasingly-expensive tickets and passes.

Race to register for the 2016 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend
Early registration opens tomorrow, January 26, for the 2016 Disneyland Half Marathon. runDisney quietly revealed the theme for the 2016 events in an update made to the official website.
They're the most famous and beloved Disney Duos of all time! And you're invited to join them during the first-ever Disneyland Famous Disney Duos Half Marathon Weekend at the Disneyland® Resort, presented by Cigna.
Get set to double your running fun in the place where dreams come true as some of Disney's most beloved duos cheer you along on spectacular runs on amazing courses. Join Mickey & Pluto, Aladdin and the Genie, the Country Bear's Liver Lips and Al, along with Dumbo and Timothy for awesome runs in the most magical place on Earth. It's a Disney character-filled weekend with special events, Disney entertainment, the Disneyland Half Marathon and 10K, runDisney Kids Races and the Dumbo Double Dare.
This is a change from past events, where runDisney has only announced the theme of the races after registration opened, leaving people scrambling to find spots once it was revealed that the 2014 would have a Lilo & Stitch theme, or the 2015 event would be themed to the Evil Queen (because yes, some people choose their races based on the medals). The character “hosts” for each event are as follows:
- Disneyland Half Marathon – Mickey and Pluto
- Disneyland 10K – Aladdin and Genie
- Dumbo Double Dare – Dumbo and Timothy
- Disneyland 5K – Big Al and Liver Lips
- runDisney Kids Races – Timon and Pumbaa
Interested runners should prepare to register the moment the website goes live, or risk missing out on the opportunity to secure early entry. The limited spots allocated for Annual Passholder early registration for the 2015 event sold out in mere minutes, forcing most runners to join the general registration crush a week later.
If you are a Walt Disney World or Disneyland Resort annual passholder, our advice is to use the links from those pages to register for the event. While Disney Vacation Club members also have access to early registration, the DVC website did not post the link until most 2015 events were already full. Here are the starting pages for each membership; the live registration links are posted the morning registration opens:
We note that Disney has raised fees $5 – $20 for the 2016 events, and also removed the scheduled price increases. As currently published, the entry fee remains the same until the event sells out. This may be in response to the quick sell-out of most runDisney events, which are never on sale long enough for the rate increase to kick in. By not scheduling a future price hike, Disney is no longer signaling that it may be possible to register in a month or two. Disney has also discontinued the Pasta in the Park party for 2016.

Disneyland Family Fun Run 5K |
Price: $80.00 (an increase of $5 from 2015) Registration for Friday's 3.1-mile event only. |
runDisney Kids Races |
Price: $20.00 (no price change from 2015) Registration for Saturday's Kids Races (in various age categories). |
General registration opens at 9:00 a.m. (Pacific) on Tuesday, February 2. If the runDisney website crashes, as it often does on registration days, you can go to Active.com directly and search for the Disneyland Half Marathon events.
After you register for your event, come add your name to the Team MousePlanet race roster to connect with other runners and share training tips.
Kylo Ren ousts Darth Vader at the Star Wars Launch Bay
Kylo Ren, leader of the First Order, has replaced Darth Vader in one of the scheduled meet-and-greet opportunities at the Star Wars Launch Bay at Disneyland. Like Darth Vader, Kylo Ren is a masked character with pre-recorded interactive dialog. He is present in the Dark Side meet-and-greet, as well as the exclusive Disney Visa Cardholder meet-and-greet offered each day.
Kylo Ren now appears daily in the Star Wars Launch Bay. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
Kylo Ren does not currently have a trading card, but cast members tell us one should be available in the near future.
Darth Vader still appears in the Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple show at in Tomorrowland.

- 2017 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 11–14, 2017. Registration opens September 20, 2016.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
School Holidays
Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2016
- Spring Break(s) – March 14 – April 8. Most local schools are closed one week during this period. Expect the majority of school closures—and crowds—the weeks immediately before and after Easter Sunday, March 27.
- Local School Holiday – Monday, March 28. Most local schools not already on Spring Break will be closed for Cesar Chavez Day.
- Nevada Day (observed) – Friday, October 28. A school holiday for our neighbors to the northeast creates a 3-day weekend and usually adds to the Halloween weekend crowds. Some Nevada schools take the entire week off as a Fall Break.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 20–21. Expect holiday-level crowds October 19–24 as Utah students and families take advantage of a Fall Break scheduled around an annual state education convention. Not all Utah schools close for UEA, but the impact on the resort is significant enough to mention.
- Thanksgiving Break – November 21–25. Many local schools close for the entire week of Thanksgiving.
- Winter Break – December 19, 2016 – January 6, 2017. Most schools close only two of these three weeks, but some districts close all three weeks due to the Saturday Christmas.

Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of October 4, 2015.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
