Disneyland Resort Update for January 29, 2024
News and Views
The Year of the Dragon
One of Disney's most popular events kicked off last week with the start of Lunar New Year at Disney California Adventure. The annual festival celebrates the traditions of Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese people, with a heavy emphasis on food and entertainment.

New this year is a meet-and-greet with Meilin Lee and her mother, Ming Lee, from Disney and Pixar’s Turning Red. The mother/daughter duo appears together at the character spot on San Francisco Street, which has been decorated for the festival. Meilin proudly shows off her red panda form, while Mrs. Lee is content to contain her panda in an amulet around her neck. You can catch them during daylight hours, but be prepared for a long wait—on opening day, fans waited up to two hours to meet the Lee family.
While “Mulan’s Lunar New Year Procession” is on the schedule every year, it seems a bit more festive during the Year of the Dragon. Mulan and Mushu also greet visitors in the gazebo inside Paradise Gardens Park, in rotation with Mickey, Minnie, and other friends.

Disney is testing a new scannable Sip and Savor Pass during this Lunar New Year Festival, but it's quite simple to use. The $46 pass ($43 for Magic Key holders) is valid for six select food items and non-alcoholic drinks from the six Lunar New Year Festival Marketplaces and participating restaurants.
Rather than snap-off tabs, the pass has a bar code on the back, along with a PIN code that's covered by a sticker that you remove before the first use. A cast member scans your pass at the time of purchase, and asks you to enter your PIN into a terminal. Your receipt shows you how many credits you have left on the pass, and you can always check your credit balance by asking a cast member to scan it for you.

If this “credits” language sounds like the Disney Dining Plan offered at Walt Disney World, you're correct—Disneyland is borrowing that technology for this test. However, the Disney spokespeople made it very clear that should not be seen as an indication that the Dining Plan is coming to the Disneyland Resort.
OK, so you have your Sip and Savor Pass—what should you use it on? I tried most of the new food items offered this year, and have some definite favorites.
The Prosperity Bao & Buns marketplace has two winners this year: The BBQ Pork Bun had a good filling-to-bun ratio, and the topping of kimchi mayo and garlic chile crunch was just right. The plant-based Kung Pao Bao is delicious, and even devoted carnivores won't be able to tell this isn't animal protein. I also enjoyed the Steamed Pork & Vegetable Dumplings from Wrapped with Love. The booth had a similar offering last year, and I think it's the black garlic sauce that really makes the dish. If you're a fan of Vietnamese-style coffee, don't miss the version sold at Bamboo Blessings, which comes topped with taro chocolate sweet cream.
The Kung Pao Bao was my favorite new dish of the festival. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
The Shrimp Lo Mein Noodles were sold out both times I visited Longevity Noodle Co., but I'll try them on a future visit.
There are some returning favorites this year that are worth another taste, including the Mickey-shaped Hot Dog Bun from Bamboo Blessings, the Quesabirria Eggroll from Lucky 8 Lantern, and the Raspberry Oat Milk Tea from Wrapped with Love.
There are a few items I'd steer you away from. There's nothing wrong with the Garlic Noodles from Longevity Noodle Co., but there are so many better options than basic spaghetti to be had here. On the other end of the spice spectrum, the Red Spice Fried Chicken Bites from Red Dragon Spice Traders are all heat and no flavor. Finally, skip the Gochugaru Shrimp Roll from Sonoma Terrace. I really wanted to love this dish, but it would have been better as a warm sandwich. Instead, it's served chilled, which makes the potato roll hard and chewy. The sandwich has a generous portion of gochugaru-marinated shrimp, and the sauce is delicious, but it was so salty I couldn't handle more than a few bites. Even if they tamed the salt level, this was a one-and-done for me.
I think festivals like this are a success when one visit isn't enough, and I definitely need to make a return trip to try additional dishes, and seek out all of the special churros created for Lunar New Year.
Pixar Place Hotel debuts today
A Disneyland Resort hotel is about to enter its Pixar Era today, as the Paradise Pier Hotel officially becomes the Pixar Place Hotel during a morning rededication ceremony.
The 15-story hotel has been refurbished and redecorated over the past year, and is now the first fully Pixar-themed hotel in the United States. Everything from the lobby sculpture to rooftop pool has gotten the Pixar treatment, during a refurbishment that also yielded a new layout for the lobby and front desk.

Work continues to redecorate the hotel's nearly 500 guest rooms with custom-made Pixar artwork and bold design elements, right down to the sheets, which bear the familiar Pixar ball logo. Notable is the iconic Luxo Jr. desk lamp, which I hope is somehow secured so it doesn't “accidentally” hop home with visitors.
The new decor package includes illustrations created by Pixar artists just for the hotel. Photo courtesy Disney.
While it seems the transformation won't be 100% complete by reopening day, some areas have been ready for some time. The rooftop pool area, which includes the Pixel Pool, Nemo's Cove splash pad, and Crush's Surfin' Slide, reopened for guests back in August.

In November, Great Maple opened its flagship restaurant on the ground level of the hotel. The restaurant also operates the new quick-service Sketch Pad Cafe in the lobby, as well as the rooftop Small Bytes Pool Bar.
I will be at the rededication ceremony on Tuesday, and look forward to getting my first look inside the redecorated rooms. Until then, you can check out my opening day review of Great Maple below.

Downtown Disney news
It looks like the Earl of Sandwich is about to move again, as the Disney Parks Blog announced last week the eatery would soon open its temporary pop-up location on the west end of Downtown Disney. Earl of Sandwich reopened in Downtown Disney Anaheim one year ago, taking over the former La Brea Bakery location after that company abruptly closed its retail operations. The popular sandwich chain opened both a take-away counter, but a new Earl of Sandwich Tavern offering a new table service menu.
Disney has previously said that the new Porto's bakery slated for Downtown Disney will be designed and constructed on the footprint of the La Brea Bakery space. Now Disney has announced that Earl of Sandwich will eventually move into a new two-story location, with the quick-service offering on the ground floor and a gastropub concept upstairs. Some have wondered if this “all-new” location might be the space soon to be vacated when Tortilla Jo's closes at the end of March. That building already has the quick-service Taqueria at Tortilla Jo's on the ground floor, and a two-story restaurant adjacent.
The Parkside Market will house four restaurant concepts under one roof. Photo courtesy of AO.
Disney also shared concept art from the new Parkside Market, which will house four Levy Restaurants concepts under one roof. The ground floor will feature Sip & Sonder, GG's Chicken Shop and Seoul Sister; and an as-yet-unnamed second story bar will offer drinks and appetizers.
A surprise came in the announcement of a third restaurant concept from Top Chef contestant Chef Carlos Gaytán (whose Chicago restaurant, Mexique, has earned a Michelin star) who is also heading Paseo and Centrico, the replacements for Catal and the Uva Bar. The new Tiendita is described as a quick-service restaurant featuring Mexican street-food staples, and the concept art shows a set up where you order at a front counter, and join a queue to pick up your food inside.
It looks like Tiendita is located in the former Sprinkles Cupcakes space. There's no seating visible in this photo, and we don't know if the location will offer an outdoor seating area. Disney's announcement seems to imply all three restaurants could open together, later this spring.

Magic Happens parade returns Friday
The Magic Happens parade returns to Disneyland this Friday, February 2. Performances are scheduled at 3:00 and 5:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday, with one performance daily Monday through Thursday.

With the return of the parade comes the Magic Happens parade dining package at the Plaza Inn. The meal package includes a entree, dessert and beverage, as well as access to a reserved viewing area for the parade. The price is $55 for adults; $28 for children ages 3-9.

Let's keep it social
It looks like the Walt Disney Company has resumed posting to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, at least for some of its official accounts. For others, including the official @Disneyland and @WaltDisneyWorld accounts, it appears Instagram and Facebook are still the preferred social media platforms. If you're used to getting your official Disney news from X, you'll want to check other channels as well.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of October 11, 2023.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Read the fine print carefully, because you need to make a theme park reservation to use this ticket—and Disney is only setting aside a limited number of reservations for this ticket type each day, and states, “reservation availability for Kids’ Special Offer Ticket holders is not guaranteed for any date, and reservations may be difficult to get for any particular date, especially as the ticket expiration date approaches.”
In addition to requiring a theme park reservation, this ticket also has a “fuse”—which means multi-day tickets expire 13 days after the first day of use (or on March 10, 2024, whichever comes first). You won't need to use all two or three days consecutively, but you will need to make sure to use them all before they expire. From past experience, it will be difficult to get reservations the last week of this offer unless you plan well in advance.
Book now here at Get Away Today or call 1-855-GET-AWAY, and be sure to mention you saw them on MousePlanet.

SoCal Resident Ticket Offer
The Southern California Resident Ticket offers residents admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure up to three weekdays between January 2 and June 2, 2024 for $225, or up to any three days between January 2 and June 2, 2024 for $275.
You can use every day of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit different parks on different days, but you can't use it to enter both parks on the same day. For an additional $70, you can upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day.
You can also add Disney Genie+ service for an additional $90 for the three days when purchased in advance. Remember that you can also upgrade to Disney Genie+ after you enter the theme park (subject to availability) and pay the then-current daily fee. We recommend going with the latter option for your first experience with Disney Genie+, just to make sure the service provides a value for you. If you love it, you can always add the Genie+ to your remaining days.
Tickets are available through the Disneyland website, or through MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.
There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means that you can use the first admission on January 2 and wait until June 2 to use the remaining admission. However, remember that you must make a theme park reservation for each day that you want to use the ticket. Disney also warns that ticket sales may be paused or ended at any time, so it's probably best to purchase early so you're ready to make reservations as soon as they open for your desired travel dates. Reservations can now be made up to 180 days in advance, which as of press time includes the entire duration of this offer.
Disney states that proof of residency is required for purchase and admission, and each resident can purchase up to five tickets per day.

Purchase with purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced-price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.
Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.
