Disneyland Resort Update for January 9, 2024
News and Views
Magic Key sales to resume Wednesday, January 10
The Disneyland Resort is set to resume new sales of Magic Key passes this week as the holiday blockout period comes to an end. All four levels of Magic Keys will be available for sale no earlier than 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 10 through the Disneyland website. You can enter the virtual waiting room no earlier than 8:45 a.m.
This is the first time Disney has sold new Magic Keys since suspending sales in September 2023. The cost of the passes increased when Disney raised admission prices in October, at the time affecting only those who wanted to renew their pass. The four Magic Key types and corresponding benefits are described below.
Disney has posted a “buying guide” designed to make the online buying process a little easier for you, so definitely check it out today if you plan to buy a pass tomorrow. If you're planning to buy a new Magic Key on Wednesday, be prepared for a potentially long wait.

2024 Disneyland Half Marathon weekend is here
It's been seven years since runDisney suspended events at the Disneyland Resort, but that long hiatus is finally over with the return of Disneyland Half Marathon weekend. The events begin this Thursday, January 11 and continue through Sunday, January 14.
The events draw tens of thousands of runners, walkers, friends, and family to the Disneyland Resort, and include road closures and operational changes that could impact anyone visiting the Anaheim Resort area this weekend. Here's what runners, visitors, and spectators should know as we head into this busy weekend.
Non-participants
The Disneyland Resort is going to be very busy this weekend, which you may already know if you had a hard time finding a reasonably priced hotel room in the immediate area. The good news is that runners tend not to stay up late the night before races, so you should see lighter evening crowds than you might expect.
Staying at the Disneyland Hotel? The race expo takes place in that hotel's convention center Thursday through Saturday, so expect extra crowds at the shops and restaurants.
If you're staying at the Grand Californian Hotel in a room overlooking Downtown Disney or in a theme park view room, expect to hear race-related activities between 4:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. on Friday, January 12 as participants and spectators make their way through Downtown Disney on their way to and from the Disneyland 5K. The 5K race ends inside Disney California Adventure, so finish line announcements will likely be audible from theme park view rooms.
This year's 10K and half marathon races have revised courses that now avoid Disneyland Drive and Downtown Disney entirely, so there will be less impact to Paradise Pier or Disneyland hotel guests than in the past. Both courses pass through Disney California Adventure for the first three miles, so again, guests with park view rooms at the Grand Californian hotel may be able to see or hear the runners starting around 5:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
While all of the races take place before park opening or outside the parks, you may still experience traffic delays and extra crowds. If you're driving to the Disneyland Resort on Saturday or Sunday to visit the theme parks, be sure to pay attention to road closures. We recommend that you park in the Mickey and Friends parking structure, and avoid the Toy Story lot entirely unless arriving after 11:00 a.m.. Runners and spectators are directed to park in the Toy Story parking lot this weekend, and there are road closures from 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on some local streets due to the race. Be sure to consult the road closures map for Saturday and Sunday to plan your trip and avoid problems.
[Editor's note: Friday's 5K participants are being directed to park at Mickey & Friends, but because most participants will be completely done well before the parks open, entering the structure should be relatively easy for park visitors.]
Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure open at 8:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, Disney California Adventure opens at 8:00 a.m. and Disneyland at 9:00 a.m. Early park entry for hotel guests is offered at both parks each day.
Spectators
Spectator viewing areas are very different from past years, and vary per race.
For the 5K on Friday, January 12, spectator viewing is at the finish line only, inside Disney California Adventure park. You enter the park from 5:00 to 6:15 a.m. from Downtown Disney through the gate located between the World of Disney store and Earl of Sandwich.
For the 10K on Saturday, January 13, spectator viewing is available on the course along Harbor Boulevard and Katella Avenue, as well as at the finish line (see the course map for specifics).
The same viewing areas along Harbor and Katella are available on Sunday, January 14 for the half marathon, as well as in the esplanade between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure as participants make the transition between the parks (see the course map for specifics). Disney also notes that you can cheer on the runners from various locations around the city of Anaheim, but be sure to check the road closures map so you can get to and from your selected spot.
Participants
We're going to refer you back to the official runDisney handbook for details of your various events, because so much is new and evolving with this return to Anaheim. Please don't rely on your hazy memory of the last time you ran through Sleeping Beauty Castle—read the guide so you know where to park each day (it changes!), where the start line is for each race (it changes!), and when you need to be where.
Keep in mind that you are required to attend the runDisney Expo at the Disneyland Hotel before your first race in order to pick up your race bib. Expo hours are:
- Thursday, January 11, 2024, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
- Friday, January 12, 2024, noon to 8:00 p.m.
- Saturday, January 13, 2024, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Look for Team MousePlanet at the half marathon
We're getting the Team back together again, so watch for us along the half marathon course. We're thrilled to have the runDisney events back in Anaheim, and can't wait to see you all on Sunday.
Kids Special Ticket offer + Tier 0 days + SoCal discount + marathon = 1 crowded weekend
This week marks the start of the Kids Special Ticket offer, which lets children ages 3 to 9 visit Disneyland or Disney California Adventure for as low as $50 per day until March 10, 2024. You can purchase 1-, 2- or 3-day park tickets, and add-on optional park-hopping and Disney Genie+ upgrades (see full details in our Ticket Prices and Promotions section below).
Mickey's Mix Magic returns to Main Street on January 8. Photo courtesy Disney.
This week also brings the return of Tier 0 days, which are the least-expensive days to visit Disneyland, with a one-day ticket just $104. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through February 7 are all Tier 0 days.
Next, the SoCal resident discount offer continues, with a 3-day ticket starting at $225.
Combine all these offers with the first half marathon weekend in 7 years, and it's going to be a busy weekend at Disneyland. Reservations for Thursday, Saturday and Sunday were unavailable for most ticket types as of press time, with Friday and Monday having limited availability. Pack your patience if you're visiting this weekend.
World of Color – One returns January 19
World of Color – One will return to Disney California Adventure on January 19. MousePlanet file photo.
World of Color was scheduled to be closed through February 29 for refurbishment after the conclusion of the holiday season, but Disney announced last week that World of Color – One will return on January 19. The show debuted last January as part of the Disney100 promotion, and features the original theme song, “Start a Wave.”
How to view World of Color – ONE
Disney uses a virtual queue system for World of Color – ONE. You must use the Disneyland mobile app to join the virtual queue, which opens at noon each day that World of Color – ONE is scheduled. Each person in your party must have already entered Disney California Adventure to join the virtual queue, or have a park-hopper ticket and have entered either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure that day.
On nights when there are multiple showings of World of Color – ONE, the app will distribute for the first show, followed immediately by the second show after the first reaches capacity. There are two virtual queue viewing areas, and visitors are encouraged to arrive 30 to 45 minutes before show time.
If you don't join the virtual queue, you can check with cast members for standby viewing options, which Disney says are limited.
Disney says you can be in the virtual queue for one attraction and one entertainment offering at the same time, so you can join the virtual queue for World of Color – ONE regardless of whether you have a boarding group for an attraction, and vice-versa.
Dining packages
When World of Color – One returns, Disney will once again offer dining packages and a dessert party offering reserved viewing for the show. The dining package is offered at Storytellers Cafe, Wine Country Trattoria and the Magic Key Terrace. Each package includes admission to the reserved standing viewing area for the show.
The dessert party offers the only way for most people to get a seat for the show, while enjoying dessert in a special reserved section of the viewing area.
New refillable Magic Key popcorn bucket
Magic Key holders can celebrate the end of the seasonal blockout period with a new refillable popcorn bucket that goes on sale January 9. Disney didn't disclose the price of the bucket, but said refills are $1.75 through February 27, 2024.
Let's keep it social
It looks like the Walt Disney Company has resumed posting to the platform formerly known as Twitter, at least for some of their official accounts. For others, including the official @Disneyland and @WaltDisneyWorld accounts, it appears Instagram and Facebook are still their preferred social media platforms. If you're used to getting your official Disney news from X (formerly known as Twitter), you'll want to check other channels as well.
@MousePlanet is also on Threads, as well as on Facebook, and Instagram, so you can find us on your platform of choice—whatever that may be.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of October 11, 2023.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Read the fine print carefully, because you need to make a theme park reservation to use this ticket—and Disney is only setting aside a limited number of reservations for this ticket type each day, and states, “reservation availability for Kids’ Special Offer Ticket holders is not guaranteed for any date, and reservations may be difficult to get for any particular date, especially as the ticket expiration date approaches.”
In addition to requiring a theme park reservation, this ticket also has a “fuse”—which means multi-day tickets expire 13 days after the first day of use (or on March 10, 2024, whichever comes first). You won't need to use all two or three days consecutively, but you will need to make sure to use them all before they expire. From past experience, it will be difficult to get reservations the last week of this offer unless you plan well in advance.
Book now here at Get Away Today or call 1-855-GET-AWAY, and be sure to mention you saw them on MousePlanet.

SoCal Resident Ticket Offer
The Southern California Resident Ticket offers residents admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure up to three weekdays between January 2 and June 2, 2024 for $225, or up to any three days between January 2 and June 2, 2024 for $275.
You can use every day of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit different parks on different days, but you can't use it to enter both parks on the same day. For an additional $70, you can upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day.
You can also add Disney Genie+ service for an additional $90 for the three days when purchased in advance. Remember that you can also upgrade to Disney Genie+ after you enter the theme park (subject to availability) and pay the then-current daily fee. We recommend going with the latter option for your first experience with Disney Genie+, just to make sure the service provides a value for you. If you love it, you can always add the Genie+ to your remaining days.
Tickets are available through the Disneyland website, or through MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.
There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means that you can use the first admission on January 2 and wait until June 2 to use the remaining admission. However, remember that you must make a theme park reservation for each day that you want to use the ticket. Disney also warns that ticket sales may be paused or ended at any time, so it's probably best to purchase early so you're ready to make reservations as soon as they open for your desired travel dates. Reservations can now be made up to 180 days in advance, which as of press time includes the entire duration of this offer.
Disney states that proof of residency is required for purchase and admission, and each resident can purchase up to five tickets per day.

Purchase with purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced-price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.
Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.
