Disneyland Resort Update for July 15-21, 2019
News and Views
Rise of the Resistance to open in 2020
The Disney Parks Blog announced that the highly anticipated Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance attraction will open at the Disneyland Resort on January 17, 2020, more than a month after the Walt Disney World version of the attraction opens December 5, 2019.

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is one of two attractions created for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, the new 14-acre additions to both Disneyland in California and Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida. The first ride, Millennium Falcon Smugglers Run, opened on May 31, 2019 when Galaxy's Edge opened at Disneyland, and will open with the East Coast version of Galaxy's Edge on August 29, 2019.
Disney describes Rise of the Resistance as “the most immersive and advanced attraction ever imagined in a Disney Park,” and says opening the ride on December 5, Walt Disney's birthday, is a way to honor his legacy. The timing is a surprise and disappointment for many West Coast fans, as Disney has said that Rise of the Resistance attraction would open in California by the end of the year.
The timing leaves those who booked holiday trips to Disneyland expecting to be able to experience a fully open Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge with a decision to make: keep their original plans and miss Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, reschedule their vacation for sometime after January 17, 2020, or visit in 2019 and 2020.
Halloween Time 2019
The Disneyland Resort will celebrate Halloween Time September 6 through October 31 with the return of popular attractions at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, and new entertainment offerings in both parks.
Much of the news is at Disney California Adventure, which is the new home of the after-hours event formerly known as Mickey's Halloween Party.
Oogie Boogie Bash
This after-hours event takes place on 20 nights in September and October, and requires a separate event ticket to attend.
Like Mickey's Halloween Party, Oogie Boogie Bash offers Disney fans young and old the opportunity to dress up and experience trick-or-treat stations, themed entertainment, the debut of the Frightfully Fun Parade and Ride of the Headless Horseman at Disney California Adventure, and meet Disney characters in their Halloween finery.

New for the 2019 event is an all-new World of Color show called “Villainous!,” which is exclusive to Oogie Boogie Bash. From the show description:
“Oogie Boogie weaves a Halloween tale about a young girl (and all-new character) named Shelley Marie. In 'Villainous!,' Shelley has a decision to make about her Halloween costume for this year, and finds herself wondering if she could really be as strong and unique as some of her favorite Disney characters. This twisted tale carries Shelley on an unforgettable journey, exploring the villainous side of Disney characters through fountains, lights, lasers, projections and special effects. 'Villainous!' shows guests that, deep down, there’s a little villain in all of us.”
Also new is a world of Disney Villains at the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail. A Disney press release says, “Redwood Creek will be completely transformed with lighting, projections, sounds and special effects, creating a dreamlike environment.”
There is quite a bit of new entertainment planned for Oogie Boogie Bash, including Mickey's Trick and Treat show in Hollywood Land, designed for younger visitors, and a DescenDance DJ dance party in Hollywood Land, aimed at 'tween fans of the Descendants franchise from the Disney Channel.
Tickets for Oogie Boogie Bash start at $110, with Halloween night tickets at $145 per person (which is up $15 from 2018). You can buy tickets from the Disneyland website, by calling (714) 781-4636, or in person at a Disneyland Resort ticket booth.
Tickets to Oogie Boogie Bash allow you to enter Disney California Adventure three hours before the start of the event. The 2018 event included PhotoPass downloads of souvenir photos taken during the event, but this perk is not mentioned for 2019 and has likely been discontinued.
Disney California Adventure
Oogie Boogie will again dominate the main entrance of Disney California Adventure, with an Oogie Boogie sculpture over the park gates and themed decorations all through Buena Vista Street. Disney says there will be new special effects added to the exterior of the Carthay Circle Theater, and the popular Headless Horseman statue will return for a third year.
The Headless Horseman will ride down Buena Vista Street during Oogie Boogie Bash. MousePlanet file photo.
Cars Land will again host the Haul-o-Ween festival, featuring the Radiator Springs residents in their Halloween costumes. Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOreee and Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween attractions will each feature Halloween music and decor for the season. The Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark overlay will return for 2019.
The Paradise Gardens area of Disney California Adventure will once again be home to the Plaza de la Familia, a Día de los Muertos-themed offering featuring food, entertainment, and activities. Returning for a third year is “A Musical Celebration of Coco,” featuring the Grammy Award-winning Mariachi Divas. The show is led by Mateo, a “singing host,” and features performances of three songs from the 2017 Disney-Pixar film Coco.
Disneyland
At Disneyland, Jack Skellington has claimed Disneyland's Haunted Mansion as his own, transforming it once again to the Haunted Mansion Holiday. Also returning are the popular Dia de los Muertos displays in Frontierland and the Main Street Pumpkin Festival. This is always a fun time to visit Disneyland, with the Disney characters dressed in Halloween costumes and the park decorated for the season. The Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy overlay appears to be on hold for 2019, and Hyperspace Mountain will operate at least through Halloween.
The Halloween Screams show can once again be enjoyed by all Disneyland visitors during Halloween Time. MousePlanet file photo.
With the after-hours Halloween party no longer hosted at Disneyland, the park will present a version of the popular Halloween Screams show most nights during Halloween Time. This is good news, as it makes the show available to all park guests, and not just those who spring for the after-hours parties.
It's interesting to note that Disney now describes the show as “supernatural projection and special effects show,” and notes that on select nights the show will be enhanced with fireworks. Disney did the same with the Mickey's Mix Magic show, using projections and effects on some nights, and adding fireworks on the weekends. With or without fireworks, we hope that Zero will return for his flights around Sleeping Beauty Castle.
Parade rest
Mickey's Soundsational Parade will step off at Disneyland for the last time this Wednesday. MousePlanet file photo.
Mickey's Soundsational Parade is ending its run at Disneyland this Wednesday, July 17. There is no word about the future of the parade, which has been presented in different forms since 2011. The Main Street Electrical Parade is scheduled to return to Disneyland August 2 through September 30 for a limited engagement. To bridge the parade gap, Disney will present the Mickey and Friends Band-Tastic Cavalcade from July 18 to August 1. From the Disney announcement:
This delightful procession, featuring live music and a host of favorite Disney characters, takes place twice daily along the parade route at Disneyland park. The march steps off in grand style, complete with colorfully adorned Main Street, U.S.A. vehicles, and continues through the park with stops for special show moments where guests can dance and clap along with their fantastic friends.
Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse will be there, along with Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto and a parade of rarely seen Disney characters. Some of the beloved Disney friends who could appear in the cavalcade from day to day may include Peter Pan and Captain Hook, Genie and Aladdin, King Louie, Terk, Marie and more. You never know who you might see!
Disney has also decided to end the run of the Red Car Trolley News Boys show at Disney California Adventure. The show debuted in 2012 with the opening of Buena Vista Street, and the upbeat performance and signature song “A Suitcase and a Dream,” have been popular with visitors since.

With the Red Car Trolley itself closed until sometime in 2020 due to the construction of the Marvel-themed land, the News Boys show has been presented in an alternate format since April 1 without the Red Car Trolley as a backdrop. Citing “current viewership trends and the needs of the business,” Disney is ending the show. The final performances are Tuesday, July 23.
Come CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanetRegistration is now officially open for the 2019 CHOC Walk in the Park, to be held Sunday, August 11 at the Disneyland Resort. Team MousePlanet will return for our 12th consecutive walk to support Children's Hospital Orange County. Thanks to the efforts and generosity of our readers, Team MousePlanet has raised over $75,000 for CHOC since 2008. We invite MousePlanet readers, friends, and family members to join our team for the event. When you register for the event, you can opt to donate directly or fund-raise the registration fee.
Why Join Team MousePlanet? COMMUNITY! Walking with Team MousePlanet is a great way to spend a morning with MousePlanet staff and readers, all while raising money for a great cause. Stay after the walk and enjoy Disneyland with your fellow Disney fans. CONVENIENCE! If you register during Early registration and meet your fundraising goal, Team MousePlanet will handle check-in for you. No need to drive to check in the week before the walk to collect your wristband and T-shirt. You need only meet us in Downtown Disney the morning of the walk to collect your goodies, then head right into Disneyland to start the walk. If you prefer to have your shirt and wristband before the walk (some people like to personalize them), there is an option to have those items shipped to you. The deadline to join Team MousePlanet and meet the $85 fundraising requirement in order for us to handle check-in for walkers is Monday, August 5. We still welcome those who register after this date, but they must handle their own check-in. In addition to helping support an outstanding local charity, one of the benefits of participating in the CHOC Walk is the opportunity to purchase specially priced Disneyland tickets to use in the weeks after the walk. Walkers who meet the $85 fund-raising minimum can purchase a 1-Day 1-Park Disneyland Resort ticket for $67 (reg. $122 to 149), or a Disneyland Resort 1-Day Park Hopper ticket for $93 (reg. $172 to 199). This is a discount of up to $106 off the ticket booth price of these tickets. The tickets can ONLY be purchased by registered walkers in person at the Disneyland Resort on the day of the walk. You must present your CHOC Walk in the Park wristband to a Disneyland Resort Ticket Booth to purchase the discounted tickets. NEW FOR 2019: A maximum of one ticket may be purchased per wristband. The tickets are valid starting Sunday, August 11, 2019, and must be used by September 10, 2019. The tickets are not valid August 31 through September 3, 2019. Are you ready to CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanet? It's easy to sign up—just visit our team page. |

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of January 6, 2019.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Purchase with purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced-price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.
Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.
Character dining vouchers – Disneyland is no longer offering tickets or vouchers to be pre-purchased for Character Dining. You may still make reservations 60 days in advance with payment due at the restaurant.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.
The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next eight to 11 months.
