Disneyland celebrates 61 years with a surprise gift to Anaheim's 6th graders

Anaheim will be home to the “Happiest Class on Earth” for the next decade, thanks to a new promotion announced last Friday by the Disneyland Resort. Starting with the 2016–2017 school year, the Disneyland Resort will give a one-day Park Hopper ticket to Anaheim sixth grade students who “make a difference in their homes, schools, or community.”

The program is offered to all public and private schools located in the city of Anaheim, California. Schools located outside the city of Anaheim with a minimum of half of students currently residing in Anaheim are also eligible. Disney estimates approximately 5,000 students will be eligible in the first year.

To qualify, students undertake a project to help make a difference in the community. They can volunteer individually or as a class, and either design their own projects or work from a Disney-provided list of suggestions.

Sixth grade teachers are responsible for tracking the efforts of their students, and submitting documentation to Disneyland. Disney says the qualified classrooms will be encouraged to make the outing a school field trip, and has promised to also provide educational materials for teachers to use in the classroom after the trip.

Mark your calendar for Halloween Time

Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort runs Friday, September 9 through Monday, October 31, 2016. The annual event brings the return of the Haunted Mansion Holiday and Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy overlays, plus the Dia de los Muertos displays in Frontierland, and the Main Street Pumpkin Festival. This is always a fun time to visit Disneyland, with Disney characters dressed in Halloween costumes and the park decorated for the season.

The bad news is that there will be 17 Mickey's Halloween Party nights during that period, which means Disneyland closes early to the public for the special event.

Disney has not yet disclosed the nighttime entertainment schedule for the fall. We expect that the Paint the Night Parade and Disneyland Forever fireworks show will be performed even after the 60th anniversary celebration wraps up on September 5, but that has yet to be confirmed.

There is also no word whether the World of Color – Celebrate show will continue at Disney California Adventure, or if the show will revert to the pre-anniversary version.

Mickey's Halloween Party dates and details

This after-hours event takes place on 17 nights this year, and requires a separate event ticket to attend. The special event includes trick-or-treat stations, themed entertainment, a performance of the event-exclusive Halloween Screams fireworks, and a brand-new entertainment offering: the Ride of the Headless Horseman down Main Street, U.S.A. The Headless Horseman is a crowd favorite at Walt Disney World, and West Coast fans are sure to be equally excited.

Disney said the Headless Horseman will “herald the arrival of a procession of frightfully delightful fiends down Main Street, USA,” but we don't yet know if Disney will bring back Mickey's Halloween Cavalcade for 2016, run the Paint the Night parade as they did in 2015, or present an entirely new Halloween parade.

Prices jumped quite a bit again this year, with Halloween night tickets now $99, up from $84 in 2015 and from $77 in 2014. The least-expensive advance purchase ticket available with an annual passholder discount now $72, up from $63 in 2015 and $56 in 2014.

We note that there are no discounts for the first event of the year. Disney usually offers at least an advance purchase discount for the first party; this year those who want to be first to see the Headless Horseman will pay full fare.

There's also a “hidden” price increase this year, in that parking is no longer included with the purchase of the Halloween Party ticket. This won't matter to some annual passholders, but the policy change represents an additional expense of $18 per car for everyone else.

Advance purchase tickets for the Halloween Party go on sale Thursday, July 21 for Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders, Disney Rewards Visa card holders, and Disney Vacation Club members. Passholders can purchase tickets online by logging into their account on the Disneyland website. DVC members and Disney Visa card holders can purchase by calling (714) 781-4400, or in person at a Disneyland Resort ticket booth. Tickets go on sale Thursday, July 28 to the general public.

As we've noted in past years, Disney seems to have realized that some locals are taking advantage of the three-hour “early” admission offered on party nights, and are using the party as their semi-annual trip to Disneyland.

Someone planning to visit on a Friday during Halloween Time can choose to buy a one-day ticket valid from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. (11 hours) for $105, or buy a Halloween Party ticket, valid from 4 p.m. to midnight (8 hours) for $89. Going the party route offers a slightly higher cost per hour, but a lower absolute price. The party also offers smaller crowds and access to exclusive Halloween entertainment.

Someone planning to visit on Halloween day this year can choose to buy a one-day ticket valid from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (10 hours) for $95, or buy a Halloween Party ticket, valid from 4 p.m. to midnight (8 hours) for $99.

The math is much more favorable for Monday and Wednesday events, when the choice is a $95 one-day, one-park ticket valid for 10 hours, or a $89 event ticket valid for eight hours, which again includes the exclusive event entertainment and smaller crowds. The exception is Halloween night, where the party ticket is $4 more than one-day admission.

Construction Land

Disney released a new piece of concept art for Star Wars Land this week, giving a slightly wider look at how the new expansion will integrate with the Rivers of America. The company also posted the image on the construction fence at the end of Big Thunder Trail, which is just steps from the actual work site.

The image is below, or you can click here for a high-resolution version perfect for inspecting the minute details, such as they are. A few sharp-eyed readers noted what appears to be a Keel boat in the Rivers of America, and noted how the Disneyland Railroad will pass below the sight line into Star Wars Land. It's going to be a real trick to prevent a galaxy far, far away from visually intruding on the lands of past and fantasy, but this sketch gives a bit of insight into how that might just be possible.

This and that…

…The second Downtown Disney Starbucks opened Monday morning. The new location is outside the AMC Theaters, across from Rainforest Cafe.

…Quicksilver's Downtown Disney closed earlier this month, and Disney has filed permits to subdivide the space and convert it into “shells” for future tenants. Quicksilver filed for bankruptcy protection in 2015, and had previously closed three other Southern California locations.

… [Updated 7/18/16 at 3:40 p.m.] Volunteer registration opens this Tuesday, July 19 for the 2016 Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend. The event is scheduled November 10–13, and volunteers are needed to work various shifts and assignments Tuesday through Sunday of race week. Duties can include packet pick-up, crowd control, water stations, and finish line. Licensed medical professionals and medical students are also needed.

Volunteers receive an event shirt, and a snack during their shift as “appreciation” for their service. Reader OlegC alerted us that Disney has changed the language regarding volunteer appreciation for this event. In the past (and for the upcoming Disneyland Half Marathon weekend) , runDisney has offered a complimentary one-day Park Hopper ticket to all volunteers who completed two shifts Tuesday through Saturday, or one shift on Sunday.

That may no longer be the case. As Oleg noted, the website now mentions only the commemorative event shirt and the snack, but there is no offer of theme park admission. However, the site still makes mention of the “two Tuesday – Saturday shifts or one Sunday shift” requirement, which implies there may be some other form of “appreciation” offered.

This new language is published for the Super Hero event, as well as the 2017 Star Wars – Light Side and Tinker Bell Half Marathon weekends. Complimentary theme park admission is still offered to volunteers at all of the 2016 and 2017 Walt Disney World runDisney events. We reached out to runDisney for clarification, but recieved an automated reply saying it could take 3-5 business days to receive a response.

Volunteer shifts have filled very quickly in the past, though this new policy may have an impact on registration for the next race. Registration opens Tuesday morning. Details on the runDisney website.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Nevada Day (observed) – Friday, October 28. A school holiday for our neighbors to the northeast creates a 3-day weekend and usually adds to the Halloween weekend crowds. Some Nevada schools take the entire week off as a Fall Break.
Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 20–21. Expect holiday-level crowds October 19–24 as Utah students and families take advantage of a Fall Break scheduled around an annual state education convention. Not all Utah schools close for UEA, but the impact on the resort is significant enough to mention.
Thanksgiving Break – November 21–25. Many local schools close for the entire week of Thanksgiving.
Winter Break – December 19, 2016 – January 6, 2017. Most schools close only two of these three weeks, but some districts close all three weeks due to the Saturday Christmas.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Through December 16, 2016, active and retired U.S. military personnel (including active and retired members of the United States Coast Guard, National Guard and Reservists) or their spouses can purchase the Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $143 each [an increase of $11 from the 2014-2015 offer].

Disneyland tickets may be used January 3, 2016, through December 19, 2016.

Active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets for themselves and up to five additional family members or friends. No more than six Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or spouse) pursuant to this offer. All tickets and options are non-transferable and must be used by December 19, 2016.

Southern California CityPASS

2016 Southern California CityPASS ($329/$294) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2016. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket.

When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $38/$30. This upgraded pass is only available for purchase directly from the CityPASS website.

You can also upgrade your CityPASS to add more days at participating locations:

Add a 2nd day at LEGOLAND for $20. Purchase this upgrade at LEGOLAND on the day you use your CityPASS.
Add LEGOLAND Water Park for $30 for ages 3+ and $5 for ages 2 and under. Purchase this upgrade at LEGOLAND on the day you use your CityPASS.
Upgrade your Disneyland ticket to another ticket or annual passport of equal or greater value. For 2016 Southern California CityPASS, a credit of $275 for ages 10+ and $264 for ages 3-9 will be applied toward another ticket of equal or greater value. Purchase the upgrade at Disneyland before the end of your third visit.

Everyone	Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers: Disneyland Cooler Tote for $19.95 with a purchase of $25 or more. Disneyland Throw Blanket for $19.95 with a purchase of $40 or more. Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.

Star Wars Imperial Meet-and-Greet at Disneyland – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity in the Star Tours Launch Bay in Tomorrowland. Offered daily from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. As of January 23, 2016, Kylo Ren replaced Darth Vader at this location.
