Celebrating July Fourth at Disneyland | Disney prepares to close Downtown Disney parking lot, relocate security checkpoint | Musical Theatre Orange County presents Tarzan – The Stage Musical | This and that…
Celebrating July Fourth at Disneyland
Disneyland's Independence Day festivities take place only on Wednesday, July 4 this year, a departure from the multi-day celebrations of recent years. Wednesday is a blockout date for all levels of the Southern California annual passport, but Deluxe and Signature passes are valid.
The midweek holiday features three appearances by the ever-popular 1st Marine Division Band from Camp Pendleton. The group first performs at a special Fourth of July Patriotic Flag Retreat at 5:00 p.m. in Town Square. This ceremony is especially well-attended on the Fourth of July holiday, so be sure to arrive extra-early for the best view.
The band and color guard return to Main Street at 5:50 p.m. for a special pre-parade appearance before the 6:00 p.m. Pixar Play Parade, then ends their Disneyland day with a special concert performance in the Fantasyland Theater at 7:00 p.m.
As for fireworks, look for a brief patriotic fireworks finale immediately following the “Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular” at Disneyland park.
With the World of Color at Disney California Adventure still closed for extended refurbishment, the patriotic pre-show is a no-go this year.
Parking is often a challenge during the Independence Day holiday, but the midweek holiday may decrease demand somewhat. Still, in past years Disney has closed the Mickey and Friends parking structure during the peak morning arrival period in order to divert cars to the surrounding lots, reopening the structure in the afternoon after the other parking lots have reached capacity. We suggest you first try the Toy Story lot south of Katella Avenue on Harbor Boulevard, which offers bus service to the Disneyland Resort and is generally easier to get into, especially for people arriving from south of the resort.
In past years, the Downtown Disney parking lot suspended the standard two-hour grace period and imposed a flat up-front parking fee for vehicles entering after 6:00 p.m., to discourage people from parking in Downtown Disney to watch the Disneyland fireworks for free from the esplanade between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks. We have yet to hear whether the resort plans to do so again this year, but we expect a similar policy to apply. If you have to pay the fee, you should be able to get a refund with validation from a Downtown Disney table-service restaurant.
Disney prepares to close Downtown Disney parking lot, relocate security checkpoint
This will likely be the final week visitors can park in the Downtown Disney “Stitch” parking lot, as Disney prepares to close the lot and relocate the west side security checkpoints. All Downtown Disney businesses west of the Monorail beam are now closed, and Disney will soon level those buildings to make way for the planned fourth Disneyland Resort hotel.
A portion of the Downtown Disney lot is already closed, with the entire lot slated to close to the public after the July 4 holiday. The lot will be used as a staging area for the various demolition and construction projects, and will eventually become parking for the new hotel.
With that lot closed, Disney will also close the security checkpoint at the parking lot entrance, between the former ESPN Zone and Rainforest Cafe locations.
When demolition begins, Disney will also relocate the security checkpoint near the Disneyland Hotel, currently located between the former Earl of Sandwich and ESPN Zone locations. Work is nearly complete on a new checkpoint between the former AMC Theater and the LEGO store, and a new walkway will guide Disneyland Hotel guests around the construction zone and to this entrance. This checkpoint will serve guests of the Paradise Pier and Disneyland hotels, as well as visitors who park in the Lion King parking area.
Cast members tell us that demolition of the Downtown Disney buildings will prompt some closures of the Disneyland Monorail, but Disney has not yet announced any specific impact.
Musical Theatre Orange County presents Tarzan – The Stage Musical
If you enjoy the production of Frozen – Live at the Hyperion, you may be interested in catching a performance of Tarzan – The Stage Musical at the Placentia Yorba Linda Performing Arts Center. Mitch Atkins, co-founder and artistic director for Musical Theatre Orange County, was the technical director for Frozen at the Disneyland Resort.

A look at the crew list shows quite a few former and current Disney cast members in the Tarzan staff, including Jeffrey Bonser, who is returning to reprise his role of Tarzan from MTOC's 2014 production of the show. Other Disney alum include choreographer Nom-L Brown, director Britany Callahan, and costumer Evelyn Perez.
There are seven scheduled performances, July 20 to 22, and July 27 to 29, with matinée performances on July 22, 28, and 29. Tickets are $25 to $30, and are available from the theater company website.

- D23 Expo – August 23–25, 2019. Tickets go on sale August 23, 2018 via the event website.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 11, 2018.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Discounts for:
Everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

There is a limit of two discounted tickets per day, per passholder, and the passholder must enter the parks with their guests. The prices are as follows:
