MaxPass debuts at Disneyland
MaxPass is here, and it can change the way you tour Disneyland and Disney California Adventure—for a price.
MaxPass is a new upcharge service that bundles the existing PhotoPass product with a new digital Fastpass tool in the Disneyland smartphone application.
MaxPass includes unlimited downloads of PhotoPass photos taken on each day that the entitlement is valid. It also allows visitors to collect and redeem Fastpass tickets remotely using the app, instead of collecting paper Fastpass tickets from a physical kiosk in the parks.

Visitors can add Disney's MaxPass to their theme park tickets for $10 per person, per day. Users can choose to purchase the MaxPass for their entire length of stay, or for one or more days. Annual passholders can add MaxPass by the day, or to their existing pass for $75, valid through the end of the current pass expiration. Signature Plus and Premier passholders, who already receive free PhotoPass photos, now also receive Disney MaxPass at no additional charge.
When the $75 upgrade was announced, Signature passholders, who also receive free PhotoPass downloads, demanded to know why they did not also receive MaxPass for free. Now we know: Disney removed the PhotoPass perk for new Signature annual passes purchased on or after July 19. Existing Signature passholders will continue to receive the PhotoPass benefits for the duration of their current pass, and will keep the benefit if they renew their pass on time. However, they do not receive MaxPass for free, and must pay the $75 fee to add the service to their AP.
For new or recently renewed passholders, MaxPass adds $6.25 to the monthly cost of a 12-month pass. Passholders due to renew in the next few months might be better served to wait until they renew their pass to add MaxPass, and thus get the most use out of their $75 fee.
The standard Fastpass system will still be available at no charge to visitors who do not purchase the MaxPass product. Fastpass tickets for World of Color or Fantasmic are not available via MaxPass, and must be collected in person as always.
I had the opportunity to test MaxPass out a day before it rolled out to the public last week, and rode four Fastpass attractions in just two hours using the system, with time to spare for a Starbucks run. Here are some notes from my test, and some tips to help you use the system.
Decide if you're in it for the photos or the Fastpass tickets – MaxPass comes with two different benefits, and how (or if) you purchase the product for your party depends on what you want to get out of it.
If you're buying MaxPass to get the PhotoPass downloads, then you only need to buy it for one member of your party. Just make sure that's the account you use whenever you see a PhotoPass photographer, and be sure to link all of your photos to that account. As we previously wrote, the $10 per ticket, per day price point for day guests is intriguing, if only because that is $29 less than the cost of the Disney PhotoPass+ One Day product currently offered. Setting aside for the moment any discussion of the Fastpass element, it's cheaper to add MaxPass onto one member of the party just to receive the PhotoPass benefit.
If you're buying MaxPass to use the digital Fastpass system, then you'll need MaxPass for every member of your party. That $10 per person can add up, so consider only using the service on really busy days to save money.
You have to show up to use it – Unlike the Fastpass+ system at Walt Disney World, the MaxPass system does not allow users to select Fastpass tickets months, weeks, or even days in advance. This is still a same-day program, and you have to activate the entitlement on the day you visit the park.
One major rule of MaxPass is that you cannot make Fastpass selections from home before even heading to the parks. You have to be inside a theme park to collect a digital Fastpass to use the same day, although MaxPass users need not physically go to their selected attraction to claim a Fastpass ticket. A MaxPass user can walk onto Main Street, U.S.A. and claim a Fastpass for Splash Mountain if they want, without ever stepping foot in Critter Country.
Take advantage of virtual park-hopping – The MaxPass app also allows you to claim a Fastpass for a ride in the other theme park, so that if you're in Disneyland, you could claim a Fastpass for Radiator Springs Racers without first entering Disney California Adventure park. During our test, we booked a Fastpass for the Matterhorn in Disneyland while waiting in line to ride Soarin' Around the World in Disney California Adventure.
There does not appear to be a geofence (a virtual geographical boundary) built into the app, and the service appears to work even after you leave the Disneyland Resort, as long as you activated your admission before leaving the park. Users have reported being able to make Fastpass reservations from their off-property hotel rooms during a break from the parks, and even from home after leaving for the day.
Watch your return times – Regardless of how they obtain their Fastpass, tickets are issued on a first-come, first-serve basis, but MaxPass users seem to have a shorter wait time to collect their next Fastpass in some circumstances. Users cannot generally obtain another classic Fastpass until two hours after they obtain the first Fastpass, or at the start of the return window of the first Fastpass, whichever comes first. During my test, the longest wait between MaxPass version Fastpass reservations was 90 minutes. Several MousePlanet readers have reported the same when using the system, so this seems to be an advantage for MaxPass users.
Keep your media handy – When it comes time to ride, MaxPass users scan a barcode at a new portal installed at the Fastpass return gate. You can either use the barcode on your admission media, or scan a barcode displayed from the app screen on your mobile device. Fastpass ticket holders continue to scan the barcode on their ticket to access the return queue.
MaxPass can drain the battery on your mobile device, so I recommend scanning your park admission when you return to ride, just to save battery life.
Another nice benefit of MaxPass is that any paper Fastpass tickets you happen to collect will show up in the app.

Check back for dropped Fastpasses – The app lets you cancel a previously collected Fastpass if you change your mind, freeing you up to collect another Fastpass more quickly. These cancelled return times are made available to other MaxPass users, a definite advantage over using the paper Fastpass system. During testing, Fastpass return times for Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! were after 6:00 p.m., but when one user cancelled a pair of Fastpass tickets with a 2:00 p.m. return time, another user was able to snap them right up. You can't do this using the paper Fastpass system.
Break the party up – One member of a party can manage Fastpass tickets for the entire party using the mobile app, as long as each member of a party purchases the MaxPass entitlement. You can link multiple people together by creating a Fastpass Party in the mobile app, but they don't all need to ride together. You can create different Fastpass parties for each ride, and even book different rides for different people.

Build-a-Bear, Ridemakerz out as Downtown Disney clears way for new dining
Employees at the Ridemakerz store in Downtown Disney were notified Saturday morning that the Anaheim location is closing on Monday, September 18. The store is a miniature car customizing shop where customers build 1:18 scale cars, optionally with remote-control gear. The Southern California location opened in 2010, with a pop-up location opening the same year in Downtown Disney Orlando. The Florida location has since closed, and the company has only two other locations in the US.
The workers were told that Disney did not renew the store's lease, and that at least two other Downtown Disney merchants would also be closing. On Sunday, we confirmed that those merchants were Build-a-Bear Workshop, along with neighbor Chapel Hats.
Build-a-Bear is one of the few remaining original Downtown Disney tenants, and its line-up of “furry friends” includes dozens of Disney-licensed plush characters and costumes. Chapel Hats is one of the newest Downtown Disney retailers, having opened just last year in the former Little Miss Matched space. Both locations are slated to close in September, but the exact dates were not available.
The Orange County Register reports eports that the store closings are to make room for new dining options in Downtown Disney, though no additional details were given.
Rumors have swirled about the Build-a-Bear location since before the store even opened. The earliest rumors claimed the two-story space had originally been intended as a restaurant location, but was leased to Build-a-Bear when the restaurant group backed out. The design of the space, with an unused second-floor balcony that mirrors Catal Restaurant across the way, makes that theory seem plausible.
When Department 56 closed in 2008, some watchers claimed the space would be converted to restaurant use. Instead, the large D56 space was subdivided into multiple storefronts, including Ridemakerz and Chapel Hats.
However, don't look for a single eatery to take over the entire building. MousePlanet confirmed that other stores in the same Downtown Disney block—Sanuk footwear and Wetzel's Pretzels—will remain open. Sanuk is located in the middle of that building, so it seems the footwear retailers might have new neighbors on both sides.
VIP experiences on sale for 10th Annual Taste of Downtown Disney District
The 10th annual Taste of Downtown Disney District, a fundraiser for CHOC Children’s Hospital, is Thursday, August 10, at the Disneyland Resort. Tickets for four VIP experiences went on sale this past Friday, July 20, and as of this writing, two have sold out. The two remaining VIP packages are:
- Ghirardelli CHOCO-late Experience ($225 per person) – Ghirardelli Soda Fountain & Chocolate Shop and Naples Ristorante e Pizzeria are partnering to bring you this chocolate lovers dream! Sample decadent desserts featuring rich Ghirardelli chocolate paired with beverages. Each guest will also receive a bountiful gift basket containing iconic Ghirardelli SQUARES chocolate and free sundae vouchers valid at the Ghirardelli Soda Fountain & Chocolate Shop. This sweet experience begins with Taste of Downtown Disney District attendance, and caps off with the tasting occurring from 8:00–9:00 p.m. at Naples Ristorante e Pizzeria.
- AMC Disney Film Magic ($200 per person) – This very special VIP experience hosted by director/producer Dave Bossert will showcase a vast variety of rare animated clips and share stories and insight behind each project. An Evening of Disney Rarities promises to take audiences on a fun and unique journey through rarely seen animated and film treasures. Guests will relax in the comfort of AMC’s theater, enjoy a sample from AMC’s new Feature Fare menu and take home an autographed copy of David Bossert’s new book, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit: The Search for the Lost Disney Cartoons. This cinematic experience begins with Taste of Downtown Disney District attendance and mixes in the viewing from 7:00–8:30 p.m. at AMC Theaters.

General admission tickets for the event have not yet gone on sale, and we are waiting for additional details from CHOC. We will share those as soon as they are available.
Tickets available for Breakfast with Santa at Catal
If you're ready to start thinking about Christmas in July, we have the dates for the 2017 Breakfast with Santa events at Catal restaurant in Downtown Disney. The restaurant has expanded the offering to 14 seatings for the 2017 season, with 8 a.m. or Noon sessions on December 9, 10, 16, 17, 21, 22 and 23.
The event includes family-style breakfast at Catal restaurant in Downtown Disney, live entertainment, a photo opportunity with Santa Claus, and a Build-a-Bear Workshop teddy bear for each child.
Tickets are $75 per adult (a $15 jump from 2016), and $30 per child ages 3 to 10. Children 2 and under are free, but must be counted in the party size. Pre-sale registration is now open—book online via the Patina Group website. If you book before July 31, you will receive a $30 Patina Group gift card that can be used at any of its Downtown Disney locations, including Catal, Uva Bar, Naples, and Tortilla Jo's.

DuckAdventure registration opens August 1

This and that…
…The iconic Monte Cristo sandwich has been removed from the menu of Disneyland's Blue Bayou restaurant. The sandwich is still available at Cafe Orleans in New Orleans Square, but without the Pirates of the Caribbean atmosphere.
…The former Starcade arcade space inside Disneyland's Tomorrowland is now a special event venue, available to private events through Disney Meetings. The Starcade can hold up to 200 people, according to Disney.

School Holidays

2017
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 19–20. Expect large attendance levels October 19–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- Nevada Day – October 28. Nevada schools are closed on Friday, October 28 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

2017 Military Salute Offer Disney released details of its 2017 Military Salute offer for Disneyland and Walt Disney World last October, and the tickets are valid January 1 through April 8 and April 24 through December 19, 2017. At the time we first shared details of the offer, we did not know about (or Disney had not announced) a special PhotoPass promotion also available to military personnel. Through December 19, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel who are eligible for the Military Salute offer can also purchase the Disney PhotoPass Collection for $49, a discount of 50% over the usual $99 price. The Disney PhotoPass Collection includes digital downloads of all available PhotoPass photos linked to your account, a voucher for a dining print package and a Disneyland Resort Gallery Disc with 350 high-resolution professional photos from around Disneyland Resort. Southern California CityPASS |
Southern California CityPASS ($346/$314) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2017. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $42/$34. This upgraded pass is only available for purchase directly from the CityPASS website. You can also upgrade your CityPASS to add more days at participating locations:

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Offered daily from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Darth Vader is once again the character featured at this location. Disneyland Resort merchandise – Cardholders also receive 10 percent off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney-operated retail stores. The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Tickets expire May 25, 2017, and are blocked out April 9–23, 2017. Read full details of this offer in the January 17 Disneyland Resort Update. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. |

Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco. Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – These package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants.
