Guardians take the Tower
It's been just two days since Disney confirmed rumors that its Tower of Terror attraction in Disney California Adventure park is receiving a permanent makeover, bringing a new Guardians of the Galaxy attraction to the existing building. If you were away from all social media this weekend and are just learning about this now, you can read more about Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! in the article we published after Saturday's announcement.
Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! is scheduled to open in Disney California Adventure in Summer, 2017. Photo © Disney.
The announcement came during Marvel Studios' presentation at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con, following a preview of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, scheduled for release in May 2017. Disney could not have arranged for a more receptive setting to break the news, but a MousePlanet reader who was in the audience said that the reaction was merely “eh,” and a reporter covering the panel said some people booed:
It's official, Guardians of the Galaxy are taking over Tower of Terror at DCA. It's called GOTG Mission Breakout. People booed.
— Germain Lussier (@GermainLussier) July 24, 2016
The response has not been any more favorable on Disney's social media channels, or on Disney fan sites. The video released on the Disney Parks Blog in which Imagineer and project director Joe Rohde describes the new ride has a “dislike” rating around 80 percent. The comments on that video, and on the official Disneyland Facebook page, are overwhelmingly against the change.

I shared my own opinion of the announcement on Saturday, saying that I'm not as distraught about this change as many are because I consider the California version of the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attraction to be vastly inferior to the original at Walt Disney World. I also enjoy having unique rides at the domestic Disney theme parks, instead of copies of the same ride on each coast, so I'm not sad to see the lesser of the two Towers attractions transformed into a new experience. I ended the article by saying this change has “no real downside for Disneyland.”

…And then I walked into Disney California Adventure on Sunday morning, and it struck me just how completely out of place the building shown in the concept sketches will look at the end of Buena Vista Street. How much it will clash with the 1920s theme that Disney just spent five years and millions of dollars building at DCA's entrance. How absurd the Red Car Trolley will look passing in front of some space-age fortress. Some people already complain that the Tower of Terror is too scary for young children, looming over Flik's Fun Fair as it does. Imagine the skyline with the new building in the background.
The Tower of Terror attraction is visible throughout Flik's Fun Fair. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
I still really don't have a problem with Disney replacing the Tower of Terror with a new ride, but I do find a serious problem with that particular building being in that particular location. It has the potential to undo a great deal of the place-making that helped DCA finally come into its own as a theme park.
Now, there are a few changes that Disney could and may make to fix some of the issues, such as rerouting the Red Car Trolley line to head north instead of south and the end of Hollywood Blvd., avoiding the Tower altogether, adding trees or shade structures to block the view from inside Flik's Fun Fair, and designing a transition between the Hyperion Theater and Tower of Terror area to visually divorce the two structures.

Despite all of the place-making work done during the DCA relaunch, the Hollywood Studios area is still a mess of Frozen, Marvel, and Pixar attractions (with the latest Walt Disney Studios release randomly thrown in), so this is actually an opportunity to address some of that mess.
Disney's press release said that the new ride will “anchor a broader universe of Super Heroes that will grow over time in Disney California Adventure Park,” so this won't be the last time we'll write about a new Marvel addition to DCA. Change is not inherently bad, but it really needs to be a cohesive development, and not simply a larger crazy-quilt of Disney's various intellectual property brands and franchises.
Fall refurbishments
The full fall refurbishment schedule hasn't been published, but we do now know the dates of two expected closures:
- Haunted Mansion – closed August 22 through September 8 to install the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay.
- The Disneyland Story presenting Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln – closes August 22 for refurbishment. No reopening date announced, but after September 4.
Mickey's Halloween Party reminder
Tickets go on sale to the general public this Thursday, July 28, for the 2016 Mickey's Halloween Party events at Disneyland.
This after-hours event takes place on 17 nights this year, and requires a separate event ticket to attend. The special event includes trick-or-treat stations, themed entertainment, a performance of the event-exclusive Halloween Screams fireworks, and a brand-new entertainment offering: the Ride of the Headless Horseman down Main Street, U.S.A. The Headless Horseman is a crowd favorite at Walt Disney World, and West Coast fans are sure to be equally excited.
Disney said the Headless Horseman will “herald the arrival of a procession of frightfully delightful fiends down Main Street, USA,” but we don't yet know if Disney will bring back Mickey's Halloween Cavalcade for 2016, run the Paint the Night parade as they did in 2015, or present an entirely new Halloween parade.
Prices jumped quite a bit again this year, with Halloween night tickets now $99, up from $84 in 2015 and from $77 in 2014. The least-expensive advance purchase ticket available with an annual passholder discount now $72, up from $63 in 2015 and $56 in 2014.
We note that there are no discounts for the first event of the year. Disney usually offers at least an advance purchase discount for the first party; this year those who want to be first to see the Headless Horseman will pay full fare.
There's also a “hidden” price increase this year, in that parking is no longer included with the purchase of the Halloween Party ticket. This won't matter to some annual passholders, but the policy change represents an additional expense of $18 per car for everyone else.
Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders, Disney Rewards Visa card holders, and Disney Vacation Club members can purchase tickets now, before the general sale begins Thursday. Passholders can purchase tickets online by logging into their account on the Disneyland website. DVC members and Disney Visa card holders can purchase by calling (714) 781-4400, or in person at a Disneyland Resort ticket booth.
Dates and prices are as follows:
- ADV – Advance purchase discount for general public
- AP – Discounted price for Annual Passholders, Disney Vacation Club members and Disney Visa cardholders
- GATE – Day of event price

As we've noted in past years, Disney seems to have realized that some locals are taking advantage of the three-hour “early” admission offered on party nights, and are using the party as their semi-annual trip to Disneyland.
Someone planning to visit on a Friday during Halloween Time can choose to buy a one-day ticket valid from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. (11 hours) for $105, or buy a Halloween Party ticket, valid from 4 p.m. to midnight (8 hours) for $89. Going the party route offers a slightly higher cost per hour, but a lower absolute price. The party also offers smaller crowds and access to exclusive Halloween entertainment.
Someone planning to visit on Halloween day this year can choose to buy a one-day ticket valid from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (10 hours) for $95, or buy a Halloween Party ticket, valid from 4 p.m. to midnight (8 hours) for $99.
The math is much more favorable for Monday and Wednesday events, when the choice is a $95 one-day, one-park ticket valid for 10 hours, or a $89 event ticket valid for eight hours, which again includes the exclusive event entertainment and smaller crowds. The exception is Halloween night, where the party ticket is $4 more than one-day admission.
Construction Land
Disney has filed a construction permit for what I suspect is the foundation for the first of the attractions planned for Star Wars Land. The permit covers the footings, foundation, underground utilities, plumbing and electrical for a building of unspecified dimensions. Last week's permits also included one for permanent shoring for one of the tunnels being constructed for the site, and temporary shoring for another tunnel near the Hungry Bear Restaurant.

To the untrained eye there isn't much new to see in the Rivers of America bed, and there is no sign that the track for the watercraft is ready to be installed. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Join Team MousePlanet for the 2016 CHOC Walk in the ParkRegistration is now open for the 2016 CHOC Walk in the Park, to be held Sunday, October 30 at the Disneyland Resort. This year the walk moves to the last weekend in October, promising a first-ever Halloween theme. Team MousePlanet will return for our ninth year supporting Children's Hospital Orange County. Thanks to the efforts and generosity of our readers, Team MousePlanet has raised over $50,000 for CHOC since 2008. We invite MousePlanet readers, friends, and family members to join our team for the event. Why Join Team MousePlanet? COMMUNITY! Walking with Team MousePlanet is a great way to spend a morning with MousePlanet staff and readers, all while raising money for a great cause. Stay after the walk and enjoy Disneyland with your fellow Disney fans. CONVENIENCE! If you register as a Fundraising Bear, Team MousePlanet will handle check-in for you. No need to drive to Orange the week before the walk to collect your wristband and t-shirt. You only have to meet us in Downtown Disney the morning of the walk to collect your goodies, and then head right into Disneyland to start the walk. If you prefer to have your shirt and wristband before the walk (some people like to personalize them), register as a Busy Bear and CHOC will ship those items to you directly. The deadline to join Team MousePlanet and meet the fundraising requirement is Friday, October 14. We still welcome those who register after this date, but they must handle their own check-in. Are you ready to CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanet?

- D23 Expo – July 14–16, 2017. Tickets are now on sale through the official D23 website.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2016
- Nevada Day (observed) – Friday, October 28. A school holiday for our neighbors to the northeast creates a 3-day weekend and usually adds to the Halloween weekend crowds. Some Nevada schools take the entire week off as a Fall Break.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 20–21. Expect holiday-level crowds October 19–24 as Utah students and families take advantage of a Fall Break scheduled around an annual state education convention. Not all Utah schools close for UEA, but the impact on the resort is significant enough to mention.
- Thanksgiving Break – November 21–25. Many local schools close for the entire week of Thanksgiving.
- Winter Break – December 19, 2016 – January 6, 2017. Most schools close only two of these three weeks, but some districts close all three weeks due to the Saturday Christmas.

Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 28, 2016.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:

This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.
The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next 8-11 months.
