Disneyland Resort Update for June 10, 2025

June 10, 2025 by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix

Happy June!

The last week of May was a fairly slow news week for the Disneyland Resort, but I was happy to note the Esplanade area music was changed to a much more upbeat mix during the morning arrivals window. There’s quite a lot more to discuss this week, so let’s dive in.

Eastern Gateway project gets second life as Disneyland Forward work begins

Disney last week announced that plans are “underway” to build a new 6,000-space parking structure to the east of the resort, on land currently used as a cast member parking lot. This new arrivals complex will also include shuttle stops, a new security screening area, and connect to the Disneyland Resort via a new pedestrian bridge over Harbor Blvd.

A new entrance is planned for the Disneyland Resort. Photo courtesy Disney.

Though this project is part of the $1.9 billion Disneyland Forward expansion approved last year by the Anaheim City Council, it has roots in the Eastern Gateway project, which Disney dropped in 2017 due to ongoing disputes with the city and local business owners. Now that everyone is playing nice again, Disney is ready to dramatically change the way visitors arrive at the Disneyland Resort.

The new structure is about the same size as the Pixas Pals structure, so I had did a little doodling to overlay the size of that structure onto the current parking lot. Disney bought the parking lot and office building in 2015, and we don’t know whether they plan to demolish or incorporate the existing building into the new project

The yellow box shows how much room a structure the size of the Pixar Pals parking structure would occupy of the existing lot.

The new pedestrian bridge will certainly make use of the former Carousel Inn & Suites parcel on Harbor. Disney bought and subsequently closed the hotel in 2016, and the land is currently a parking lot. Disney says the new bridge will lead to an “all-new esplanade arrival experience” This makes perfecrt sense, because the current esplanade was built in a time before technology made ticket booths obsolete. Disney no longer needs 8 such structures between the parks, and in fact is already tearing out two of them to make room for Porto’s Bakery.

The yellow line indicates one possible route for the pedestrian bridge over Harbor.

As far as construction projects go, arking structures are not as exciting as new rides, but this is an important first step in the expansion dance, which I envision as a sort of slide puzzle. This new structure will replace the parking capacity of the Toy Story parking lots, allowing Disney to in turn develop that land into a multi-use complex of shopping, hotels, dining and entertainment.

Monsters, Inc. to close to make room for Avatar expansion

After the Anaheim City Council approved the Disneyland Forward project, then-Disneyland Resort president Ken Potrock said that the previously-announced Avatar Experience was at the top of the list of projects coming to Anaheim. Last week Disney announced that the “Avatar destination” will be located in the current Hollywood Backlot area. (Note, it’s not a land, it’s a destination. Set your expectations accordingly.)

Avatar Destination concept art courtesy Disney.

As such, Disney confimed that Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! will close early next year. Surely this is not the only park of the backlot that will be sacrificed to the natives of Pandora, but nobody plans trips to catch the final weekend of a gift shop.

Going back to the maps, (and please, I’m a writer, not a graphic artist), Monsters, Inc. is flanked by Stage 17, the former Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? venue. Disney ocassionally uses this for public-facing events, but it’s more often used as private event space. Stage 12 opened in 2001 as a food court, but is now used as a backstage kitchen. Both of these buildings are likely to be incorporated into the new ride.

The red pin shows the Monsters, Inc. ride building. To either side are Stages 17 and 12. The Hyperion Theater is in orange.

However, it’s possible the Avatar Destination is even larger. After all, concept art shows this is a boat ride, on the order of Pirates of the Caribbean, and that attraction has two large show buildings. Once the new parking structure opens and the Toy Story lot closes, Disney will not need the load and unload area for the Toy Story parking lot shuttles, which lies to the north outside of the current boundaries of DCA. That area could be annexed for Pandora, though Disney would need to either reroute or camoflage the Monorail track which currently runs right through the area.

A new Avatar attraction coming to Disney California Adventure will send guests on the adventure of a lifetime in search of majestic natural wonders that only can be found on Pandora and the beauty – and danger – that come along with the journey. Concept art courtesy Disney.

For even more space, Disney might take out the Hyperion Theater, which has sat empty for more than a year. I’ve outlined a roughly Florida-shaped area showing the potential, though I admit that any use of the Hyperion land poses some serious issues with land transitions. That would shove the Avatar Destination right up against Avengers Campus, and also create an awkward transition from Hollywood to Pandora. The speculation is fun, but it will be a while before we have any real details.

Disney has a lot of underused land to work with in Disney California Adventure.

More details about the Coco attraction

The boundaries of DCA are being pushed to the south by the Avengers Campus expansion, and possibly to the north by the Avatar Destination, and finally to the southwest with the addition of an attraction based on the 2017 Disney Pixar film “Coco.” This is another boat ride, and the entrance is themed to a family museum.

Disney says the ride will be build between Pixar Pier and Paradise Gardens, which is actually a very natural transition, especially as Paradise Gardens is home to the Viva Navidad and Plaza de la Familia installations during the holidays. Disney says the construction will be “in areas that are predominantly backstage today.” (Yellow area on the map). There’s not much room there, especially given the parade gate (red) leading to the backstage float barn (highlighted in green) is on the border between the two districts. Looking at this, I suspect that Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta (in orange) may be on the chopping block to make way for the new ride.

It’s difficult to see where Disney is going to wedge in a new ride behind Pixar Pier.

Earl of Sandwich to close, again

The “temporary” Earl of Sandwich location will close at the end of July to make room for the new Port’s Bakery. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

The 167 employees of the Earl of Sandwich location in Downtown Disney learned last week that their restaurant will close at the end of July. The news came in the form of a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act letter filed by Earl of Sandwich, and giving layoff dates of July 28 through August 10. Based on that, we expect the restaurant will likely close to the public on July 27, with some workers staying on another week or so to close up shop.

One law firm feels that Earl of Sandwich may not have complied with federal law in issuing the layoff notices to workers, and claims the company may owe workers up to 60 days of severance pay and benefits.

After the restaurant closes, the Earl of Sandwich “pop-up” trailer located across from the former ESPN Zone in Downtown Disney will remain open, as work continues on a new two-story Earl of Sandwich on the west end of shopping district.

In April, Disney filed a trio of building permits to begin work on the long-delayed Porto’s Bakery, which will be built on the footprint of the Earl of Sandwich building. The permits call for the demolition of not only the 2,610 sq. ft. restaurant building, but also adjacent ticket booths #7 and #8.

Disney has not made any official comment about this latest development, or given updated opening dates for the new Earl of Sandwich locations or Porto’s Bakery.

Disneyland Halloween Half reminders

This is a friendly reminder to those participating in the runDisney Halloween Half Marathon weekend events that theme park reservations are now open for the event weekend.

Disney has shared images of the medals designed for this event. If the medal reveal is giving you a case of FOMO, there are quite a number of charities who still have race bibs available for those willing to fundraise for their cause.

Fans go Bananas at Disneyland

The Savannah Bananas appearance at Disneyland two weeks ago drew quite a crowd, with some fans waiting hours just to see their brief performance in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle, and later a cavalcade down Main Street, U.S.A. One couple drove from Arizona to see the team at Disneyland, saying it was less expensive to buy one-day tickets than to purchase a pair of seats to the game. They said they would get more interaction with the players in the park, and a better view of the game on ESPN.

During their Castle appearance, Bananas founder and owner Jesse Cole credited Walt Disney as being a major inspiration to him, and called the experience of bringing his team to Disneyland “a dream come true.” Players from both the Savannah Bananas and their rivals The Firefighters spent part of the day walking around Disneyland, greeting fans, signing autographs and enjoying the rides.

During their visit to the park, both teams paid a visit to the Main Street Fire Station and took photos with the cast members. At Sunday’s game, veteran Disneyland fire department member Hang Ameen was honored as the honorary firefighter of the game.

Black Music Month

Disneyland celebrates Black Music Month with five weekends of special musical offerings, plus a number of new installations around the resort. You can see the schedule of performances on the Disneyland mobile app, with live music each Saturday and Sunday in Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. Downtown Disney also has daytime performances on weekends, and live music every night.

The Broken Spell Lounge at the Disneyland Hotel offers live music Friday and Saturday nights, and Joe Gardner from “Soul” performs most nights in the lobby of the Pixar Place hotel. Guests staying at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel can enjoy daily live music and DJs on the pool deck.

A brand-new Golden Horseshoe Exhibit: Black Music at the Turn of the 20th Century is open in Frontierland now through July 11, and New Century Music on Main Street has a (very small) new window display honoring “the overshadowed Black banjo masters of the early 20th century.”

Disney also points out on the Celebrate Soulfully page of the website that characters like Ariel from the live-action “The Little Mermaid” or Princess Tiana can be encountered during your visit.

Pixie Hollow progress

After months of delays, you can meet Tinker Bell again starting June 29. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Meet Tinker Bell in Pixie Hollow are has been closed for refurbishment for so long that I’ve lost track of all of the delays, but finally there’s some good news. The construction zone around the meet-and-greet has expanded, so it looks like something is happening. Better yet, the attraction is back on the schedule starting on June 29, with operating hours listed. The posted hours are 8:15 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and it appears that Tinker Bell doesn’t visit on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Tickets, Discounts and Promotions

Disneyland prices as of October 9, 2024.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Disneyland Anniversary Ticket

Fans can visit Disneyland up to four times during the 70th anniversary for as little as $100 per day with the Disneyland Anniversary Ticket.

The tickets are valid for visits during the first months of the 70th anniversary celebration, May 16 through August 14, 2025. You can purchase 3-day park tickets for $360 per person, or 4-day park tickets for $400. Pricing is the same for all ages 3 and older. As always, you can add on optional Park Hopper and/or Lightning Lane Multi Pass service upgrades for an extra charge.

Even better, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission the day you buy it and wait until August to use the remaining admission days if you wish. However, you must make a theme park reservation for each day you wish to use this ticket, and Disney will set aside only a limited number of reservations for this ticket type each day.

As with the prior offer, the terms state, “Reservation availability for these offer tickets is not guaranteed for any date and reservations may be difficult to get for any particular date, especially as the ticket expiration date approaches. To ensure best availability, make reservations early.” From past experience, it will be difficult to get reservations the last weeks of this offer unless you plan well in advance.

Tickets available on the Disneyland website, or through MousePlanet’s travel partner Get Away Today. Book online at Get Away Today or call 1-855-GET-AWAY, and be sure to mention you saw them on MousePlanet.

  • 3-Day Military Promotional Park Hopper Ticket: $295 ($26 increase from the 2024 offer)
  • 3-Day Military Promotional Park Hopper Ticket with Lightning Lane Multi Pass: $391 ($32 increase)
  • 4-Day Military Promotional Park Hopper Ticket: $349 ($34 increase)
  • 4-Day Military Promotional Park Hopper Ticket with Lightning Lane Multi Pass: $477 ($42 increase)

Disneyland tickets may be used January 1 through December 27, 2025, which adds New Years Day and Christmas week to the offer. There are no other blockout dates this year, so the ticket is valid during spring break, summer, Halloween Time and beyond.

Active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets for themselves and up to five additional family members or friends. No more than six Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or spouse) pursuant to this offer. All tickets and options are non-transferable and must be used by December 27, 2025.

This offer must be purchased at a participating US military base ticket office. Eligible US Military service members can also buy tickets via GOVX.com

2025 Military Hotel discounts

Military discounts are valid for stays most nights from January 1 through December 27, 2025. You can book now through December 23, 2025, and travel must be completed by December 28, 2024.

Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (800) 453-4911 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30% to 40% off, based on room category. Concierge rooms, Signature or Premium suites, or 2-or 3-Bedroom Villas are excluded from the offer, and this offer can not be combined with any other discount.

Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member.
