Pirates of the Caribbean reopens
It's been nearly a year since Disney first announced changes to the classic Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, and the new auction scene has already debuted at Disneyland Paris and Walt Disney World in Florida. Even so, fans waited up to an hour, and through several “technical difficulties,” as Pirates of the Caribbean reopened at Disneyland last Friday.

As with the Orlando version, the re-imagined auction scene features the famous Redhead, now known as Redd, in a brand-new role. No longer satisfied to be a wench for the taking, Redd joined the ranks of the pirate crew, and helps conduct an “auction” of goods plundered from the local townspeople. But even before riders reach the auction scene, there are several notable changes to the ride.

The Davy Jones mist screen effect, added in 2006 as part of the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest revision, has been removed, and the original cavern audio restored. A new vignette in this cavern brings to life a Marc Davis sketch, and introduces a new octopus to the ride.
When the changes were announced last year, Disney Legend Marty Sklar, who worked closely with Walt Disney during the earliest days of Disneyland, said the changes were in keeping with Walt's vision of the parks.
“Pirates of the Caribbean has always represented great Disney Park storytelling; it has set the standard for the theme park industry for half a century! But it's a story you can continue to add fun to, with great characters in new 'performances.' That's what the Imagineers have done with this new auction scene—it's like a theatre show with a new act.”
Kathy Mangum, vice president and executive producer with Walt Disney Imagineering, explains what Imagineers hoped to accomplish with this update:
“Our team thought long and hard about how to best update this scene. Given the redhead has long been a fan favorite, we wanted to keep her as a pivotal part of the story, so we made her a plundering pirate! We think this keeps to the original vision of the attraction as envisioned by Marc Davis, X Atencio, and the other Disney legends who first brought this classic to life.”
After riding last Friday, I found myself surprised by the figure of Jack Sparrow on the final lift hill. Between the restoration of the classic audio tracks, the removal of Davy Jones, the addition of the new Marc Davis scene, and even the new auction scene, Jack's continued presence in the ride seems out of context. My hope is that the next big change to Pirates of the Caribbean (the ride) is to remove the remaining references to Pirates of the Caribbean (the movie).
There is one final change to Pirates of the Caribbean, and that is the addition of Fastpass scanners at the entrance to the ride. Disney did not open the Fastpass service for the ride this weekend, but we expect it will roll out shortly.
Redd makes her debut in New Orleans Square
When she's not auctioning rum inside the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, Redd hangs out in New Orleans Square in the hopes of recruiting a crew for another profitable voyage. We caught up with Redd last Friday, as she greeted the first group of fans outside Cafe Orleans.

Save up to 40% with new Bring-a-Friend offer
Now through September 3, Disneyland Resort annual passholders can purchase one-day park-hopper tickets for friends and family at a savings of up to 40% off the ticket booth price. This new Bring-a-Friend offer is similar to a promotion announced last week for Walt Disney World, though the terms are a bit different.
Passholders can purchase these discounted tickets in person at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or at the Disney Desks at local Good Neighbor Hotels. Passholders can only purchase these tickets for days their own pass is valid, and the offer is not valid on blockout dates. The tickets are only good for admission on the date they are purchased.
There is a limit of two discounted tickets per day, per passholder, and the passholder must enter the parks with their guests. The prices are as follows:

This promotion is very unusual for Disneyland, and points to lower attendance predictions for the 2018 summer season. Disney also lifted some June blockout dates for select passholders (details below), offering them more time to visit the parks before the summer blockout season begins.
Some June blockouts lifted for passholders
The summer blockout season was to have started this week, but Disneyland on Friday lifted some June blockout dates for two pass types.
Passholders with the Southern California Select pass just received 8 more days this month, and can visit this Monday through Friday, June 11-15, and next Monday through Wednesday, June 18-20.
Holders of the legacy Southern California passport can now visit June 15, 16, 20, 21, and 22.
Deluxe annual passholders can now visit this coming Saturday, June 16, after which Saturday blockouts apply until August 18.
With many local school districts already out for summer vacation, you can expect these 9 days to be very popular with passholders trying to squeeze in one more family visit before the regular blockout schedule resumes, or looking to take advantage of the bring-a-friend offer just announced.
As currently scheduled, Southern California Select annual passholders are blocked out June 19 through August 20. Holders of the legacy Southern California passport are blocked out June 29 through August 20.
Closures planned in advance of Pixar Pier opening
With the scheduled opening of Pixar Pier just two weeks away, Disney crews appear to be working overtime to get the new area ready. Last week Disney California Adventure announced that the popular Toy Story Midway Mania attraction and the adjacent Midway Mercantile store will be closed June 10-20. The ride will also close June 21-22, according to the Disneyland website.

Knick's Knacks and the new Adorable Snowman Frosted Treats are also scheduled to close June 18-22, and will reopen June 23 with the opening of Pixar Pier.

A work wall constructed just beyond Adorable Snowman Frosted Treats closes off the walkway to Pixar Pier, where workers can be seen building, painting, planting, and finishing the new load building for The Incredicoaster, the concrete arch that will frame the Incredibles park, and installing new signs and facades on the former Paradise Pier buildings. Closing off the entirety of Paradise Pier allows Disney to keep heavy equipment in the area and work during the operating day. That park managers had to make that decision is a pretty clear sign that the project is running behind schedule. Hopefully the extra access allows Disney to get Pixar Pier open in time for the announced opening.

…Advance purchase tickets for Mickey's Halloween Party at Disneyland go on sale to Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders this Tuesday, June 5. The after-hours events are scheduled September 19, 21, 24, 26, 28; and October 2, 5, 9, 12, 16, 19, 23, 26, 29, 31. Tickets go on sale Tuesday, June 12 to the general public.

…Wetzel's Pretzels closed for refurbishment this Saturday, part of what a Disney spokesperson calls “Downtown Disney’s ambitious, promenade-wide transformation.” While the storefront is closed, the Wetzel's Pretzels cart next to the World of Disney store will remain open. Disney says the main Wetzel's location will reopen later this year.

- Pixar Fest – April 13 to September 3. Highlights include the new “Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular” fireworks show, as well as performances of the Paint the Night parade in Disney California Adventure, and the Pixar Play Parade in Disneyland.
- Pixar Pier premiere event – Friday, June 22. The 6-hour event, scheduled the evening before the area officially reopens to the public, offers exclusive access for a “very limited” number of buyers to the rethemed Paradise Pier area of Disney California Adventure. Tickets are $299 per person, available from the event website.
- CHOC Rock'n Luau at Splitsville Luxury Lanes – Saturday, August 25. Tickets go on sale July 1 at the event website.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Southern California CityPASS |
Southern California CityPASS ($353/$324) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2018. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $44/$36. This upgraded pass is only available for purchase directly from the CityPASS website. You can also upgrade your CityPASS to add more days at participating locations:

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days).
