Fantasmic! returns July 17
Disneyland is celebrating its anniversary on Monday, July 17 with the return of Fantasmic!, according to an announcement posted last Thursday on the Disney Parks Blog. July 17 is a Monday, and the day after the 2017 Disney D23 Expo closes in Anaheim. The late announcement sent some Expo attendees scrambling to change their flights and extend their hotel stays by a day so they could see the debut of the new show.
The article promises that the show will still feature the “original fanfare and theme song,” updated with new scenes. In an article that was quickly pulled from its website back in April, Disney's D23 division prematurely announced that Fantasmic would debut new sequences from Aladdin, Tangled, The Lion King, and Pirates of the Caribbean. We've reported here that Disney built a new lift for a flying carpet effect for the Aladdin sequence, which Disney confirmed in a Parks Blog post in May.
It has been widely rumored that the Peter Pan section of the show will be replaced with a sequence featuring Captain Jack Sparrow on the Sailing Ship Columbia, but Disney has not given any indication of what sections were removed from the previous show.
Though we now know the date Fantasmic is returning to Disneyland, there are still a number of missing details. We asked a Disney spokesman to fill in the gaps, but we were unable to get answer to most of our questions.
The representative did confirm that Fastpass will be offered for Fantasmic when it returns, though the rep could not confirm whether or how the show would be included in the new MaxPass product, which is due to launch shortly, possibly as early as this week (see “Prepare for MaxPass,” below).
We learned that Fantasmic dining packages will go on sale “soon,” though we could not confirm any details about possible package offerings. When Fantasmic went on hiatus last year, Disneyland converted the Fantasmic dining packages into parade viewing packages, first for the Paint the Night parade, and then for the Main Street Electrical Parade. Cast members at the locations currently offering the dining packages—Aladdin's Oasis and the Blue Bayou—say that they have not been told how the new Fantasmic packages will work.
It seems that Disney might expand the dining package program to additional locations for a month, to take advantage of the high demand created by the return of Fantasmic and the final month of the Main Street Electrical Parade's “return engagement.” It's possible we could see packages again offered at River Belle Terrace, and perhaps even at the Carnation Cafe.
Disneyland officials would not say if the Fantasmic! dessert party will return, or whether there will be any sort of new upcharge offering. There has also been no word of an added-charge preview party, but with the popularity of both the Tower of Terror “final farewell” event and the preview events for the Guardians of the Galaxy attraction, it seems certain that Disney could turn a profit by selling tickets to the final dress rehearsal on July 16. The final panels of the D23 Expo end at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday night, offering a large potential audience.
Rivers of America and Disneyland Railroad scheduled to reopen July 29
Also announced last week was a reopening date of July 29 for the Disneyland Railroad and the three Rivers of America attractions: the Sailing Ship Columbia, the Mark Twain Riverboat and the Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes. All of these attractions have been closed for the past year due to the construction related to Star Wars Land.
David Koening shared some notes about the reopening last week in his MousePlanet blog:
When the Mark Twain and Columbia return to the Rivers of America July 29, they will be traveling slower in order to maintain their traditional ride duration of 14 to 15 minutes.
Since the reconfigured river is shorter, the ride time could have been cut. But Disney figured the slower speed would make it easier to maintain loading and unloading times, particularly when running both boats, and to coordinate with the rafts and canoes. “It’s a ballet on the river,” explained one cast member.
The canoes, since they are in large part guest powered, will not be slowed down, so the shorter course should increase the ride’s capacity (and translate into record times for the annual Cast Member Canoe Races).
On the north side of Tom Sawyer Island, the long-retired Gullywhumper keel boat will be docked at river’s edge next to the rebuilt (non-Burning) Settlers Cabin and the structure will be treated as the home of character Mike Fink.

As we reported earlier, Disney had filed for construction permits for work on the dioramas along the Disneyland Railroad route, and the Parks Blog article confirmed, “Walt Disney’s legendary dioramas of the Grand Canyon and Primeval World have been carefully restored to their original splendor, with a bit of new magic added to both!”

The Disneyland Railroad will travel a new route around Disneyland's perimeter, with the track passing between Frontierland and Star Wars Land. The new path includes a series of elevated trestles along a new Columbia Gorge facade. A portion of this new route is now visible from the recently reopened Tom Sawyer Island.

Prepare for MaxPass
This may be the week that Disney finally unveils detailed information about the new MaxPass offering. Cast members have been training on the new program for weeks, and last week were notified of an operational change to the existing paper Fastpass system. Starting Wednesday, June 21, the ticket issued from the Fastpass kiosks in the parks will simply serve as a reminder of the Fastpass return window. To access the Fastpass return line, visitors will scan their theme park admission—either their paper ticket or Annual Passport—using the new portals that have been installed over the past few months at Fastpass attractions in both theme parks.
MaxPass bundles the existing PhotoPass product with a still-in-development digital Fastpass tool in the Disneyland smartphone application. MaxPass allows visitors to collect and redeem Fastpass tickets using the app, instead of collecting paper Fastpass tickets.
MaxPass does not allow advanced or off-property planning. It is still a same-day program, with users activating the entitlement for the day that they visit the park. They must physically be inside a theme park to collect a digital Fastpass to use the same day, although MaxPass users need not walk to their selected attraction to claim a Fastpass ticket. For example, a MaxPass user can walk onto Main Street, U.S.A. and claim a Fastpass for Splash Mountain without ever stepping foot in Critter Country. The MaxPass app also allows users to claim a Fastpass for a ride in the other theme park, so a user in Disneyland could claim a Fastpass for Radiator Springs Racers (in Disney California Adventure) before park-hopping.
The product also includes unlimited downloads of PhotoPass photos taken for each day that the entitlement is valid. Disney announced the introductory price of $10 per ticket, per day. Pricing for Annual Passholders has not yet been introduced.
Once MaxPass rolls out, visitors using that new added-cost digital program will use their mobile devices to claim and redeem Fastpass tickets. Visitors who opt not to pay for the mobile version can still continue to use paper Fastpass tickets as they do now, with the above-mentioned change of scanning the admission media instead of the Fastpass ticket when they return to ride.
These new hitching posts in Frontierland are actually Wi-Fi antenna, as is a nearby directional sign. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
A key component of MaxPass is the in-park guest Wi-Fi network, which Disney recently rolled out in limited areas around the theme parks. Twitter user @Hastin noticed new hitching posts in Frontierland this weekend, and determined they are Wi-Fi antennas.
Confirmed these are WiFi Antennas! Also the old gingerbread sign is one too now. pic.twitter.com/9KA6Ny2ltg
— Hastin (@hastin) June 18, 2017
Wi-Fi is still only available in select areas around the parks, identified by little icons on the official park maps distributed at the main entrance. Here are the current locations:
Disneyland
- Main Entrance Esplanade
- Main Street – Guest relations kiosk/wait time board
- Main Street – Partners statue/central hub
- Tomorrowland – outside Star Wars Launch Bay
- Fantasyland – between Matterhorn and Tomorrowland Terrace seating area
- Fantasyland – Fantasia Gardens, near Edelweiss Snacks
- Frontierland – Rancho del Zocalo seating area/Zocalo Park
- New Orleans Square – edge of Rivers of America, near raft docks
There is currently no Wi-Fi offered in Adventureland, Critter Country, or Mickey's Toontown
Surprisingly, there seem to be more hot spots offered in Disney California Adventure, which already had a few areas of unplanned Wi-Fi access thanks to the network at the nearby Grand Californian Hotel.
Disney California Adventure
- Main Entrance Esplanade
- Buena Vista Street – Guest relations kiosk/wait time board
- Grizzly Peak – Outside Soarin'

Return to Tom Sawyer Island
Tom Sawyer Island quietly reopened on Friday, June 16, offering a brand-new vantage point from which to observe the progress of the reshaped Rivers of America and the Disneyland Railroad.
All of the main Pirates Lair elements seem to be intact, though some props previously scattered around the island were moved or removed. Laffite's Tavern, the main structure on the island, has been refurbished and repainted. The stage in front of the tavern houses the lifts and equipment for Fantasmic.

The Tavern is also the backdrop and stage for Fantasmic, and engineers installed new equipment for the show during the refurbishment. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
Although the western edge of the island was shaved as part of the project, the removed area was never accessible to the general public, so the island seems to be pretty much unchanged. There is one trail still closed to the public, and the area of the former graveyard is behind a construction wall. Fort Wilderness is completely closed to the public, as it had been before the construction began, and is now a break room and changing area for island crew and Fantasmic cast.

The island's treehouse is still completely closed to visitors, as it has been since 2013, and in light of Disney's current safety campaign, it seems incredible that it was ever actually open for people to climb up into. A small creek runs below the tree roots of the giant tree, and at some point in the last five years, Disney placed boulders between the roots to prevent unwary visitors from falling into the water. While those rocks may serve to keep folks from the water, they seem compelling to visitors who are determined to climb them. During a brief visit Sunday, we watched as cast members chased three people down from the rocks.
The treehouse was still open in 2003, and the waterfall flowed freely through the roots. MousePlanet file photo.
Today the treehouse is closed to the public, and gaps in the roots are filled with boulders to keep visitors out of the water. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

In our highly litigious society, even warning signs that Tom Sawyer Island is a “natural environment” may not be enough to keep Disney from deciding the whole place poses too much of a liability risk. As the saying goes, this is why we can't have nice things. Hopefully we can all enjoy the island for years to come.

This and that…
…runDisney recently alerted participants that the start time for the Disneyland Half Marathon weekend events had been moved to 5:00 a.m., 30 minutes earlier than the usual start time. MousePlanet contributor Lorree notes that this start time also applies to the 2017 Avengers Half Marathon weekend events in November. When you also factor in the added time needed to clear the new security checkpoints around the start lines, runners stand to lose an extra hour of sleep on race days as a result of this change.
…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We'll also include a fun bonus, such as an Eye Spy or a trivia question. To subscribe to our free newsletter, just enter your e-mail in the box below.

School Holidays
Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other school holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2017
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 19–20. Expect large attendance levels October 19–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- Nevada Day – October 28. Nevada schools are closed on Friday, October 28 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Non-Disney Resort Events
Notable events at parks and attractions around Southern California. If you know of an event that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
Knott's Berry Farm
Legoland California
- Surfers' Cove at LEGOLAND Water Park – opens summer.
- Red, White and Boom – July 4.
- Brick-or-Treat – Saturdays in October.
- Holidays at Legoland – November 24, 2017 through January 1, 2018
- Kids' New Year's Eve – December 31.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 28, 2016.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Tickets expire May 25, 2017, and are blocked out April 9–23, 2017. Read full details of this offer in the January 17 Disneyland Resort Update. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.
The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next 8-11 months.
