Fastpass changes test visitor patience
As we reported last week, Disneyland rolled out a change to the current Fastpass process last Wednesday, June 21. With this change, the ticket issued from the Fastpass kiosks in the parks serve only as a reminder of the Fastpass return window. To access the Fastpass return line, visitors now scan their theme park admission—either their paper ticket or Annual Passport—using new portals Disney has installed over the past few months at Fastpass attractions in both theme parks.

This change was made in anticipation of Disney's pending debut of MaxPass, a new service that bundles the existing PhotoPass product with a new digital Fastpass tool in the Disneyland smartphone application. MaxPass allows visitors to collect and redeem Fastpass tickets using the app, instead of collecting paper Fastpass tickets. MaxPass users will also scan their admission media to access the Fastpass return line.
The portals are fairly easy to use—just hold your admission media under the scanner, and wait for the Mickey icon to turn green. There are usually two scanners at each checkpoint, one on each side of the line, which allows two users to scan their passes at the same time.
For most visitors, the biggest impact of this change is that they must keep their admission media accessible and ready to scan several times for each Fastpass attraction they want to visit—once when they collect the Fastpass, once when they enter the Fastpass return line, and a final time when they reach the point in the line where Fastpass and Standby riders merge into one line. To make the best use of the dual scanners at each checkpoint, cast members request that each member of a party carry their own admission media instead of having one person scan all of the passes for the entire party.

MousePlanet columnist Lisa Maulhardt visited Disneyland the day the new system went online, and reported that Fastpass return lines were much longer than usual, as visitors and cast members alike learned to use the scanners. She noted that the line to enter the Radiator Springs Racers Fastpass return queue stretched nearly to the intersection of Cars Land, and that it took about 30 minute to board the attraction once her party entered the queue. She noted that visitors and cast members alike seemed to be having issues with the scanners, which she said caused delays at the second checkpoint. However, she said there were no delays at Toy Story Midway Mania.
Over at Disneyland, she said the already crowded queue outside the Indiana Jones Adventure was even worse on Wednesday, as the Fastpass return line spilled out into the walkway. Lisa notes that there were lots of managers at each of the Fastpass attractions she visited, and says she hopes they were taking notes.

For visitors who use Disney's Disability Access Service, the Fastpass process is a bit more complicated. The person to whom the DAS is issued must scan their admission ticket at the Fastpass return line before the rest of the party scans their tickets. This policy is in place to validate the return time and prevent abuse of the DAS system, but can cause delays when tickets are scanned out of order.
Disney did not make any additional announcements regarding the MaxPass program last week, and we still do not know when the new service will roll out.

CHOC-tastic discount ticket promotion
We have the details of the 2017 CHOC-tastic discount ticket promotion for those who participate in the 2017 CHOC Walk on Sunday, August 27 at the Disneyland Resort.
In addition to helping support an outstanding local charity, one of the benefits of participating in the CHOC Walk is the opportunity to purchase discounted Disneyland tickets during the CHOC-tastic promotion. Walkers who meet the $85 fund raising minimum can purchase a 1-Day 1-Park Disneyland Resort ticket for $57 (regularly $91 to $124), or a Disneyland Resort 1-Day Park Hopper ticket for $86 (regularly $151 to $174).
The tickets can only be purchased by registered walkers in person at the Disneyland Resort on the day of the walk. You must present your CHOC Walk in the Park wristband to a Disneyland Resort Ticket Booth to purchase the discounted tickets. Each walker with a valid wristband can purchase up to five tickets, which represents a savings of up to $440.
The tickets are valid starting Sunday, August 27, 2017, and must be used by September 23, 2017. The tickets are not valid September 1 to 4; September 15, or September 20 to 22.

- Dapper Day Spring Outing to Disneyland (unofficial event) – Sunday, April 22. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – Originally scheduled for May 10-13, 2018, but runDisney has since removed the date from the event listing. Registration was scheduled to open June 27, 2017; no updated information has been released.
School Holidays

2017
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 19–20. Expect large attendance levels October 19–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- Nevada Day – October 28. Nevada schools are closed on Friday, October 28 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

2017 Military Salute Offer Disney released details of its 2017 Military Salute offer for Disneyland and Walt Disney World last October, and the tickets are valid January 1 through April 8 and April 24 through December 19, 2017. At the time we first shared details of the offer, we did not know about (or Disney had not announced) a special PhotoPass promotion also available to military personnel. Through December 19, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel who are eligible for the Military Salute offer can also purchase the Disney PhotoPass Collection for $49, a discount of 50% over the usual $99 price. The Disney PhotoPass Collection includes digital downloads of all available PhotoPass photos linked to your account, a voucher for a dining print package and a Disneyland Resort Gallery Disc with 350 high-resolution professional photos from around Disneyland Resort. Southern California CityPASS |
Southern California CityPASS ($346/$314) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2017. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $42/$34. Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017.
