Disneyland Resort Update for June 3–9, 2019
News and Views
A Day Long Remembered
New theme park offerings are frequently marketed in terms of how immersive, authentic, entertaining, innovative and technologically advanced they are, be it a single new attraction or an entire new land. We're living in an exciting time in the theme park industry, with companies pushing the boundaries of what visitors expect from theme parks in an effort to outdo the resort up the road.

From this has come Universal's Wizarding World of Harry Potter, followed by Pandora – The World of Avatar at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Both are incredibly detailed, highly-immersive lands featuring groundbreaking technology.

Disney raised the stakes this weekend when the first of two Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge expansions opened at the Disneyland Resort in California. The new land, and especially the Millennium Falcon: Smuggler's Run attraction, have definitely set a new standard for immersive theme park experiences.
But the biggest innovation to come from Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge might not be the incredible ride system used to let guests finally pilot the Millennium Falcon, nor the Star Wars cantina with a droid DJ, nor the way designers manage to convince you that you're on an entirely new planet and not in a former petting zoo. Rather, the biggest innovation might just be the way Disneyland managers debuted the new land to the public.

Instead of the traffic jams, parking snarls, hours-long lines and overcrowding that accompanied the grand openings of Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Pandora – The World of Avatar, opening day for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge saw minimal crowds, short lines, and an abundance of parking.
If you measure the success of a new land by the size of the crowd waiting in line for hours in the hot sun or pouring rain to get in, then you would call the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge a flop.

But if you measure the success of the new land by the satisfaction of the visitors—both those who visited the new offering and those who spent their day in the rest of the resort—then this debut was a stellar achievement, and one that will likely change theme park operations for the better.
Members of the MousePlanet team spent three days visiting Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge over this past week, and we've shared almost every minute of our experiences via YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and even a four-hour live-stream event from the grand opening celebration. Alan Dalinka has collected highlights of that content onto one easy-to-read page, which we invite you to browse at your leisure. You can also browse our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube pages for even more coverage and hundreds of photos.

For this Update, I want to focus a bit on the practical aspects of visiting the Black Spire Outpost. The tips and information in our Batuu Boot Camp are updated with the most recent changes, and is a great place to start to plan your trip.
The marketplace on Batuu was inspired by shopping centers in Marrakesh and Istanbul. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
The process of checking in and getting your wristband before your reservation window is incredibly quick and efficient, and will go even faster if your entire party is ready with the email that has your reservation confirmation, and photo ID for everyone in your group age 18 and older.
Once you have your wristband there is no need to wait in line to get into the land at the start of your reservation window. The earliest you can get in line is 30 minutes before the reservation begins.

It pays to have a plan of attack fto maximize your visit time. Of course, the best advice we can give you is to accept that you can't do everything in one visit, so you'll need to prioritize. Most people head right for the Millennium Falcon: Smuggler's Run attraction as soon as they step foot onto Batuu. We completely understand the lure, but if you can resist the siren song of piloting the Millennium Falcon for just a little longer, here is our recommended order for hitting the highlights:
Savi's Workshop should be the first stop if you hope to build a custom lightsaber during your visit to Batuu. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
#1 Savi's Workshop – if you want to build a custom lightsaber during your first visit, your first stop must be Savi's Workshop, where you will stand in line to pre-pay for your $200 souvenir and receive a return time to come back and actually participate in the experience. Note that only the builder and one guest can enter Savi's, so the rest of your party will have 20 to 30 minutes to wander while you build your lightsaber.
The longest lines at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge were to get into Oga's Cantina on opening night. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
#2 Oga's Cantina – if your party also plans to visit Oga's Cantina, send a member of your group to put their name in at Oga's while you wait in line at Savi's. The cantina rolled out a text-based reservation system on Sunday to help cut down on the long lines reported on Friday and Saturday. However, you'll only have 15 minutes to return to the bar once it's your turn, so be prepared to have to leave another store or line when you get the call.
Dok Ondar's Den of Antiquities is easy to spot from the unique decorations outside. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
#3 Droid Depot – if Savi's isn't on your agenda for the day, this is a good time to build your Droid at the Droid Depot.
#4 Marketplace – while you're waiting to return Oga's, you can also spend some time sightseeing in the marketplace, getting photos in front of the Falcon or browsing Dok Ondor's Den of Antiquities.
The Droid Depot is the place to build your own custom astromech unit. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
#5 Millennium Falcon: Smugler's Run – after your visit to Oga's Cantina, or about 2 hours into your reservation period, head to Millennium Falcon: Smuggler's Run. This should be the best time to ride one or more times before the next group of visitors arrives an hour before your reservation period ends.
#6 Food – if you're hungry by this point and really want to try some Batuu cuisine, be sure to use Mobile Order to skip the line at Docking Bay 7 or Ronto's Roasters. You can even pre-order some Blue Milk.
Disney has posted a merchant and food guide for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, and it's definitely worth scanning the map before your reservation window to prioritize your stops and make the most of your first visit.

While it seems that the reservation period is well in hand, we're of course looking ahead to June 24, when Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge opens to the public with no reservations required, and no restrictions on how long you can remain in the land. We'll share additional details about that operation plan as we learn them. Perhaps that will be the point where those who judge success by the length of the line will feel Star Wars has come into its own. For us, we're just enjoying the relative calm before the storm.

Mickey's Mix Magic ends Thursday, Disneyland Forever returns Friday
Disneyland officially wraps up Mickey's 90th Birthday celebration this week, and the final performances of the Mickey's Mix Magic nighttime show are scheduled for 9:30 p.m. this Monday through Thursday.
Starting Friday June 7, the very popular Disneyland Forever fireworks show will light up the skies above Disneyland at 9:30 p.m. each night through the summer. Originally created for Disneyland 60th anniversary celebration, Disneyland Forever incorporates lasers and projectors, water screens and bubble blowers, snow makers, and inflatable dancers along with the fireworks.
If you missed the first season of Disneyland Forever, be sure to read our guide to the show for tips on the best place to catch the special effects.
Tale of the Lion King scheduled to open Friday
The Palisades Stage in Paradise Gardens Park will be the home for the new Tale of the Lion King show, opening this Friday, June 7 at Disney California Adventure. Last month Disney shared a video from a workshop for the new outdoor show, but there have been no updates about the production since then, possibly due to the Resort's focus on all things Star Wars in recent weeks. The new show does not even appear on the entertainment schedule posted on the Disneyland website.
A galactic charity auction
MousePlanet receives at Disney press events are sold at auction to benefit a number of local charities, including Team Muscle Makers for UCMD, an organization founded by MousePlanet readers Melissa Martin Mayorgas and Lonna Eshelman.

Please take a look at this week's listings, and we invite you to bookmark the team's eBay for Charity page to be notified when new items are added.
Come CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanetRegistration is now officially open for the 2019 CHOC Walk in the Park, to be held Sunday, August 11 at the Disneyland Resort. Team MousePlanet will return for our 12th consecutive walk to support Children's Hospital Orange County. Thanks to the efforts and generosity of our readers, Team MousePlanet has raised over $75,000 for CHOC since 2008. We invite MousePlanet readers, friends, and family members to join our team for the event. When you register for the event, you can opt to donate directly or fund-raise the registration fee.
Why Join Team MousePlanet? COMMUNITY! Walking with Team MousePlanet is a great way to spend a morning with MousePlanet staff and readers, all while raising money for a great cause. Stay after the walk and enjoy Disneyland with your fellow Disney fans. CONVENIENCE! If you register during Early registration and meet your fundraising goal, Team MousePlanet will handle check-in for you. No need to drive to check in the week before the walk to collect your wristband and T-shirt. You need only meet us in Downtown Disney the morning of the walk to collect your goodies, then head right into Disneyland to start the walk. If you prefer to have your shirt and wristband before the walk (some people like to personalize them), there is an option to have those items shipped to you. The deadline to join Team MousePlanet and meet the $85 fundraising requirement in order for us to handle check-in for walkers is Monday, August 5. We still welcome those who register after this date, but they must handle their own check-in. In addition to helping support an outstanding local charity, one of the benefits of participating in the CHOC Walk is the opportunity to purchase specially priced Disneyland tickets to use in the weeks after the walk. CHOC has not yet announced the dates or details this promotion for 2018; we will share details as soon as we know them. Are you ready to CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanet? It's easy to sign up—just visit our team page. |

- Coming Soon! When we know, you'll know!
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of January 6, 2019.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Everyone
Purchase with purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced-price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.
Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.
Character dining vouchers – Disneyland is no longer offering tickets or vouchers to be pre-purchased for Character Dining. You may still make reservations 60 days in advance with payment due at the restaurant.
Annual Passholders
Disneyland Resort merchandise – Disneyland has once again extended the additional 20% merchandise discount offered to Disney Signature Plus, Disney Signature, Disney Premier, and Premium annual passholders, this time through December 31, 2019. All other passholders receive a 10% merchandise discount. Visit the Annual Passholder discount page for specific details and exclusions.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.
The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next eight to 11 months.
