Opening dates announced for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge
May the 31st be with you? It's not quite as catchy as the usual Star Wars Day pun, but May 31, 2019 will still be a “day long remembered” for the first outside visitors who get to step foot onto the fictional remote planet of Batuu for the grand opening of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland.
Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger announced during the Annual Shareholder Meeting last week that the 14-acre expansions are running ahead of schedule at both Disneyland and Disney's Hollywood Studios, and will each open in two phases. The California version will premier first on May 31, 2019, with all of the shops and restaurants operational, as well as the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run attraction. Phase one of the Florida expansion will open on August 29, 2019.

The highly anticipated Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance attraction will open later in 2019 as part of a Phase 2. If this is the first you've heard of a phased opening, you're not alone. While it was rumored that the opening dates would be announced during the shareholder meeting, the fact that the whole land would not open at once was a surprise to most watchers, and seems to contradict the message that the project is ahead of schedule.
Our theory is that the Rise of the Resistance is on schedule for the original opening date, but the rest of Galaxy's Edge can be ready to open earlier. Disney decided on a phased opening as a way to start generating revenue from the new land as soon as possible. The company knows die-hard fans will still pay full price to walk the Black Spire Outpost, even with one ride not yet open. And those same fans will come back for a second visit during Phase 2, generating more revenue for the company.
Disneyland seems so sure that Phase 1 will be a hit that the company is including the following notice on all advertising related to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge:
Reservations required to visit Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge between May 31 and June 23, 2019. Access to Disneyland Park, Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge and its experiences may be restricted or unavailable depending on guest demand and other factors.
In a press release issued during the shareholder's meeting, Disney states that these no-cost reservations are subject to availability, and that details on how to make a reservation for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge will come at a later time. The press release also stated that visitors staying at one of the three Disneyland Resort hotels between May 31 and June 23, 2019 will receive one “designated reservation to access Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge during their stay,” subject to availability.
It should be no surprise that this announcement sent Star Wars fans scurrying to book a reservation for opening weekend at a Disneyland Resort hotel. Shortly after the announcement, the lowest-price room available was around $430 plus taxes at the Paradise Pier Hotel. Later that evening, the least-expensive room available at the same hotel was over $900. At press time, both the Disneyland Hotel and Paradise Pier Hotel are sold out for the weekend of May 30 to June 1, as are all of the standard rooms at Disney's Grand Californian hotel, when booking through the Disneyland website. If you're willing to splurge, you can still book a concierge-level room at Disney's Grand Californian hotel starting at $1,200 per night, or a Signature Suite at the Disneyland Hotel, which can run up to $5,000 per night.
If you must be one of the first people to roam the Black Spire Outpost, rooms at all three Disneyland Resort hotels are still available for opening weekend through other avenues, including MousePlanet travel sponsor Get Away Today. It's important to note that stays at Disneyland's Good Neighbor Hotels do not include this “designated reservation,” and people staying at those properties will still have to make a reservation to visit Galaxy's Edge.
If you don't snag a reservation to visit Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge during opening month, don't bother looking for the standby line. Access to the new land between May 31 to June 23, 2019 is limited to those with advance reservations, period. It doesn't matter if you're a day guest, an annual passholder, a Disney Vacation Club owner, or a shareholder—you won't get in without a reservation, and Disney has said there will be no standby queue.
Disney has said Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge will not open for Extra Magic Hour or Magic Morning at Disneyland, and that Fastpass and MaxPass will not be offered for Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run or Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at first. These policies all relate only to the Disneyland Resort—Walt Disney World will have different operating policies when Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge opens there in August.
Apart from just managing crowding in the 14-acre Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge area, this reservation system may also help alleviate stress on other Disneyland Resort operations and improve the experience for guests who thought they were visiting before all of the Star Wars craziness began.
As scheduled, Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge will open before the new addition to the Mickey and Friends parking structure is completed. As local passholders know, Disneyland's existing parking lots often fill to capacity on busy days, especially when there are few or no annual passholder blockouts. May 31 is a blockout day only for the lowest-tier of Disneyland Resort annual passholder, and is in fact the last day the Southern California annual passport is valid at Disneyland before the summer blockout season begins.
Long-time readers may remember the One More Disney Day event in 2012, and the impact on surrounding streets and freeways. Hopefully, passholders and Star Wars fans who know they can't get into Galaxy's Edge and didn't have another reason to visit the parks will stay clear of the Anaheim area during opening weekend, keeping the streets clear and the parking lots open.
May and June are also peak school travel season, with lots of groups making their end-of-year and senior trips to the Disneyland Resort. May 31 is a Grad Nite, and while the after-hours festivities take place at Disney California Adventure, school groups had the option to purchase tickets for their students to spend the day at Disneyland. There are seven more Grad Nites in early June, each bringing thousands of high school grads to the Resort.
While Disney says this reservation system is in place only through June 23, don't expect Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge to be wide open to visitors after that date. Disneyland will still need to restrict crowding in the area, much as Animal Kingdom park did with the opening of Pandora in 2017.

…Director Tim Burton surprised fans at Disneyland this weekend, where he made an appearance to promote Disney’s all-new, live-action feature Dumbo. Burton introduced a sneak peek of the movie at the Main Street Opera House, signed autographs, and posed for photos at the Dumbo The Flying Elephant in Fantasyland. Dumbo opens in theaters on March 29.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Everyone
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.
Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.
Character Dining Vouchers –Disneyland is no longer offering tickets or vouchers to be pre-purchased for Character Dining. Reservations can still be made 60 days in advance with payment due at the restaurant.
Annual Passholders
Disneyland Resort merchandise – Disneyland has once again extended the additional 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Disney Signature Plus, Disney Signature, Disney Premier and Premium annual passholders, this time through December 31, 2019. - Disney Military Promotional 4-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $198 each (an increase of $10 from the 2018 offer)
Disneyland tickets may be used through December 18, 2019, excluding the spring break blockout of April 14–22, 2019.
Active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets for themselves and up to five additional family members or friends. No more than six Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or spouse) pursuant to this offer. All tickets and options are non-transferable and must be used by December 18, 2019.
Hotel discounts
Military discounts are valid for stays most nights from January 1 through December 19, 2019. Travel must be completed by December 20, 2019.
Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (714) 520-7088 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30-40% off, based on room category.
Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member.
Photopass Discount
Eligible service members can purchase the Photopass Collection for $49 plus tax through December 21, 2019. The package includes digital downloads of all PhotoPass photos in the user's account when they redeem the voucher; a voucher for a dining print package, and a Disneyland photo disc with 350 stock photos from around the Disneyland Resort.

Here are some other details you should know about regarding the offers:
- Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased at participating U.S. military sales outlets ONLY by Eligible Service Members (defined below) or their spouses (but not both), for use by themselves and other family members and friends, as provided herein. These Tickets may not be otherwise transferred, distributed or resold.
- Eligible Service Members are active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service (PHS), and the Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
- The actual prices charged at the individual U.S. military base ticket offices for Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be less than the prices set forth above.
- Participating military sales outlets must require that Eligible Service Members (or their spouses) present valid military identification to purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets.
- Disney 3-Day or 4-Day Military Promotional Tickets for admission to the Disneyland Resort expire and may not be used after December 19, 2019. Valid military identification will be required for purchase and use.
- No more than six (6) Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased and (if applicable) activated by any Eligible Service Member or spouse (regardless of the place of purchase and whether purchased by that person or that person’s spouse). In addition, one of the six (6) tickets purchased must be used by the Eligible Service Member or his/her spouse.
- Each Disney Military Promotional Ticket must be used by the same person on any and all days.
- The Photopass Collection can be purchased only in person at Kingswell Camera Shop in Disney California Adventure, or at Main Street Photo Supply in Disneyland.
Hotel & Travel Packages
Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.
Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – These package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants.
